fault in someone else, and of accusing them, they instead find the root of the problem within themselves. A story of Doc sitting around a table with other faculty members around 18 years ago in the Grille was then offered by Dr. White. He said that the other faculty members were accusing a member of the College administration when Doc caused them to pause by saying “Who is the real Jack Birdwhistell?” Doc was searching for himself in this moment. Dr. White then spoke of the famous Catholic monk, Thomas Merton. He then discussed “two paths of discipleship” which included the contemplative life and active life. According to Dr. White, Merton’s active life included ecumenism, social justice and peace and interreligious dialogue. Many of Merton’s values were studied and paralleled by Doc who often sought to reach out to other members of the Georgetown College community unlike himself. “Catholicism was Doc’s horizon,” said Dr. White since Doc did his PhD work on Baptist and Catholic relations and

often took an interest in the lives of his Catholic students and colleagues. “Doc received two very important points from Merton: ecumenism and shining like the sun,” said Dr. White. Doc was known to have watched individuals walk around campus “shining like the sun” and was famous for the phrase “shine on.” Doc may have never found his true self in life, according to Dr. White, for the “true self is hidden with God,” but he did live a very fulfilling life. Freshman, William Thomas, had the following to say about the lecture: “For somebody who didn’t know Doc, Dr. White captured the spirit and feelings of everyone on campus who knew Doc well.” Jordan Smith, sophomore, agreed with Thomas but added that the lecture was “very inspirational and acknowledged the fact that we can’t judge others but must judge ourselves first.” This is exactly what Doc did. He was a unique Christian example, friend and mentor to many on campus (and beyond) and will always be remembered for the amazing life he lived.

Jodi Arias sentenced after seven years By BRADEN BOCARD Staff Writer It has been almost seven years since Travis Alexander was murdered in his Arizona home, and ex-girlfriend Jodi Arias has just been convicted of life in prison. Alexander was found murdered in the shower of his home by friends after days of no contact with anyone. Alexander had 27 stab wounds on various parts of his body, had been shot by a .25-caliber gun and had his throat slit. A camera found at the home contained pictures of both Arias and Alexander together the day of the murder, as well as the picture of a body, covered in blood laying on the floor of Alexander’s home. Also at the scene of the crime was a woman’s hair and bloody fingerprint, both having Arias’ DNA. Arias was questioned by police after suggestions from Alexander’s

Arias is sentenced to life without parole. closest friends. According to them, Alexander and Arias were no longer dating, but Arias had become obsessive over Alexander. Several past occurrences including Alexander’s hacked Facebook and slashed tires, were also believed to come from Arias. Over several different sessions of questioning, Arias’ answers changed.

At first, she said that she had not seen Alexander on the day of the murder, but the story then changed. She stated that they were together, but a home invasion occurred and the invaders brutally murdered Alexander, while she managed to escape. Her final claim was that the two had been together, and that Alexander had attacked her and she murdered him in self-defense. Arias’ initial trial began Jan. 2, 2013 and lasted until May 2013 when she was found guilty of murder. Her final sentencing, however, was made on Monday by Judge Sherry Stephens. A group of jurors decided against the death penalty, but could not decide on a sentence, leaving Judge Stephens to make the decision. The two options available to Judge Stephens were life with no parole, or life with parole after 25 years; Judge Stephens chose the former option.

NEXUS on alcohol use and legal issues By ANDREA BELLEW News Editor On Thursday, April 9, a NEXUS was held in the chapel called “Risky Businees: Legal Implications of Fraternity and Sorority Life.” It was presented by Mr. Glenn Williams, Scott County Attorney and Adjunct Professor at Georgetown College. The presentation mainly focused on the legal implications of alcohol use in Greek life, but the information was said to be applicable to any organizations or college students. A trial for a completely made up scenario was dramatized on the stage. The scenario involved an underage student of a made–up sorority becoming intoxicated before formal and drinking more at formal. Later in the night the

minor gets in a car wreck and kills a father of two children. In the dramatization, Williams asked each participant questions that would be asked of the character they portrayed if they were actually in court. There was Suzie, the underage drinker, who was played by Rachel Mergenthal. John, the boyfriend of Suzie who provided her “pre-gaming” drinks, was played by Tanner Brondhaver. Kate, the sorority big sister of Suzie who provided her drinks at formal, was played by Jana Dye. Beth, the chapter president of the made-up sorority, was played by Virginia Hurst. Marcia, in charge of Risk Management for the sorority, was played by Bailey Milam. Mike, the person who tried to stop Suzie from driving, was played by

Jon Carlyle. After each of the participants answered the questions and responded based on their selected characterization, Williams used the PowerPoint to go over what each person would most likely be charged with. Hurst had this to say about her experience as one of the participants, “I was honored to play the part and was glad to be asked to do it. To be honest, I think [irresponsible drinking] is something overlooked by fraternity and sorority members, so the message was important.” Mr. Williams ended the presentation with a few brief words on the legal implications of hazing and theft.

Judge Stephens said “the defendant did not render any aid to the victim,” and that she “went to great lengths to conceal her involvement” (news. Yahoo.com). She said that these facts did not call for any leniency in the court’s decision on sentencing, and therefore there would be no option of parole. Arias showed her remorse, stating that this was a mistake she had made and had lived with for years. She even went so far as to say she would have preferred a death sentence because it would bring her peace. Information for this article came from: Abcnews.go.com, Huffingtonpost.com, News.yahoo.com

KHS: Myth- squatting bad for knees

By SEAN KRATCHMAN Staff Writer

If you’ve been around fitness for very long, or maybe even if you haven’t, you’ve likely heard that squatting is bad for your knees. I completely agree with this statement. Squatting is bad for your knees… if you don’t perform the exercise correctly. The squat is the king of all exercises. If the weight room were a jungle, the squat would be a lion. Let’s look at why the squat is so awesome and why you should be doing it. You’ve been squatting since you were baby. Think about a baby picking up a toy or sitting down. Babies obviously don’t have a barbell on their backs, but they are performing the squatting movement. Squatting is a part of every day life for humans. When we go from standing to sitting and back up, we

are squatting. Before toilets and outhouses were invented, humans had to squat to relieve themselves. Almost every sport there is involves some variation of squatting. In any legitimately effective training program that is meant to increase Source: Physicalculturalist.ca performance, squats are Squatting works both the lower and body when done properly. used in some form. show that not squatting all the way down produces higher shear force on the knee than squatting all the way down. Full range of motion squats have also been shown to produce significantly higher results in performance than quarter upper squats. The squat is truly a full–body exercise, and if you’ve ever done a heavy squat workout, you understand why. You’ll be sore in your upper body as well. So all of you out there that skip leg day, I’m talking to you Mr. Dumbbell curls in the squat rack, maybe you should think twice. Heavy squats have been shown to trigger the release of testosterone and growth hormone within your body. These hormones not only help your lower body get bigger and

stronger, but also your upper body. So squatting helps your upper body get bigger and stronger as well. Yes, this includes your biceps. When performed correctly, the squat involves all of the muscles in your body to stabilize the barbell on your back and squat it. Now that you know the awesomeness of the squat, you need to learn how to perform it correctly! Do some research, find a well-qualified coach on YouTube or in person.

of a lake (also underwater), in the middle of a street, in the middle of the M1 motorway or during a keirin race (form of a motor–paced cycle racing). Then there is also jumping out an airplane, setting off a parachute and then deciding you forgot to iron your blouse. There is that, too. The question that has you all boggled is simple: who in the world came up with such an EXTREME sport? Well, the sport started in 1997 by Phil Shaw. Where at? Leicester,

England to be exact. Shaw, coming home from a knitwear factory, wanted to have an evening of rock climbing. He then decided to combine the two activities into an extreme sport. So, in June of 1999, Shaw went on an international tour to promote the activity.

Takeaways: -No matter your fitness goals, you should be squatting. -Learn how to squat, and squat often. -Squats aren’t bad for your knees or back, but incorrect squats are. -Squats will get your lower and upper body bigger and stronger. -Squat all of the way down.

Extreme Ironing presses into sports

By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer Many sports have been listed and written about on this page. These sports are normally random and absurd sports that exist in our world and have increasingly become popular. So, let’s talk about an extreme sport that seriously exists. Oh, yes, wait until you read about this one. Ready? Extreme Ironing. It is exactly what you are thinking. Extreme Ironing is

where people have ironing boards and take them to a remote location while ironing clothing items. It is considered to be an extreme sport AND a performance art. The Extreme Ironing Bureau defines Extreme Ironing as “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well–pressed shirt.” So where do people perform Extreme Ironing, you may ask. Well, many different places. For example, one

could go for a nice mountain climb that is considered rather difficult and on the top of the mountain, iron their business shirt. Or perhaps while canoeing they could iron a pair of slacks. There is also the possibility of ironing their suit while skiing or snowboarding. For some reason, you can iron underwater, which defeats the purpose of ironing an article of clothing, but nonetheless, it is still consider part of Extreme Ironing. Other places can include under an ice cover

Earth day is next Wednesday By FIONA McELRATH BackPage Editor On Wednesday, April 22, Georgetown Sustainability Initiative (GSI) is hosting an Earth Day event on Giddings lawn. This is an annual event on Georgetown’s campus, designed to raise awareness of environmental and social justice issues while also helping out local businesses. It is a large event that extends to the community as well as the students, faculty and staff of Georgetown College. The event is meant to

“allow students to have fun while learning about important issues in the world today,” said Braden Bocard, GSI president. To raise money and help pay for the event, GSI invites businesses from town to set up a table and put up posters. The campus clubs of Georgetown are also invited to do the same. Bocard also said that in the past, the Earth Day event has been very open and welcoming to both students and community members alike. There is always live music by local bands, as well as a student

band. This year, the student performance will be by Ryan Sanders as a warm–up to the other two bands, Justin Paul Lewis and Brother Smith. GSI hopes that many students will come to enjoy this event and learn something about the environment and to support the local businesses that are also participating.

I have never met a more willing group of people to go out of their way to help you.” The professors who have impacted Teresa the most include Dr. Allen, Dr. Burch, Dr. Czarnecki and Dr. Barbaccia, all from the English department. When speaking of Dr. Barbaccia, Teresa said: “She is not only my advisor and professor, but a mentor. She’s just incredible, and I cannot even begin to describe how wonderful she has been to my college experience.” When asked about some of her favorite Georgetown memories, Teresa said that she loved being invited to her professors’ houses for dinner.

“That’s always really cool, especially because Dr. Allen has the best house,” Teresa said. She also said that she enjoyed time spent amongst friends, having “heart to heart sessions” when she should have been sleeping or studying. Teresa concluded our interview by encouraging students to take courses with the wonderful and influential women of the English department, even if English literature is not your main area of focus.

Guild game of the week: On the trail again By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer Now that this week we are all back to normal and not a bit messed up with April Fool’s and whatnot, shall we go back a couple of years? Maybe a couple more. And a couple more. Maybe one to two decades ago where we were back in elementary school. Ah, the good old days where recess was still a thing that we all loved and still miss, where our child-like imaginations ran free like the butterfly and we ran about on the playground. Where we learned simple things that were hard for us, and when we led a family of five across the country. Oh? What? You do not remember that? Hm, perhaps not, so let me jog that memory of yours. It all starts in Independence, Mo. where you choose whether you want to be a banker, a carpenter or a farmer before you lead your family of four on your journey. You have roughly $800.00 to spend and you need to buy supplies before starting your journey. Where are you going exactly? To Willamette Valley, Ore. Have you figured it out yet? Injuries, illness and death could also happen throughout the game. Injuries could include broken limbs or a snakebite. Many illnesses like dysentery, measles, cholera and typhoid fever lead to death. Other things that could lead to death were snakebites (you can survive it, but it is usually unlikely), exhaustion, drowning in the river and accidental gunshot wounds. Even the oxen were prone to illness and death. Sounds depressing, right? Perfect for children in elementary school. After a death, the player had an option for a brief funeral before continuing on the trail. If you concluded the journey and made it to Oregon, you were scored. Points were awarded for surviving family members, as well as remaining supplies and cash. Most of us didn’t really care about the scoring because we were too relieved from making it to the end of the game. So, there you have it, the rebirth of part of your childhood. I will understand if some of you are going to go play the game now.

“Hetalia” brings new life to history By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer So, there has been a recent discovery on the part of some of my fellow friends. There is a way to understand history better. It is called “Hetalia” and was created by Hidekaz Himaruya. “Hetalia: Axis Powers” was originally a webcomic about World War II to the present that eventually turned into a manga (similar to a comic book) and an anime (Japanese cartoon). It was just a way to give countries their own personalization. Each country has its own looks, personality and quirks to make it unique, and also adds in some stereotypes of each country. Now, some of you are wondering how this helps with history. Well, with the countries as people, they interact

much like our countries do, and they put a new light on history. It makes history funny and interesting (not that it wasn’t already, but there is a more comedic level to it now). Actually, I believe it is more satire than anything. It includes historical, political, economic and military interactions between the countries as they happened in real history. Let me help you better understand. The main characters of “Hetalia” are Italy (North Italy), Germany, Japan, United States (America), England, France, Russia and China (as it was in World War II). Italy, the primary protagonist, is a very sweet young man. He is carefree and loves to flirt. He also loves pasta. Germany is a stoic young gentleman with blonde hair and blue eyes who does not like chaos and

always has his home clean. Then there is America who is loud, hyper, headstrong and obnoxious. He is always seen with a cheeseburger in his hand. Did I mention America has an alien named Tony? No? Well he does. So as you can see, there are some stereotypes, but there has to be in order for a country to have a personality and make sense in recreating events of history with them. Now, if you plan on watching “Hetalia,” these episodes are actually not very long. In fact it is rare to watch an episode that is longer than five minutes. The series likes to summarize events such as how Germany, Italy and Japan allied with each other in World War II. There have been controversies in some actual countries about show-

ing the anime “Hetalia” because the actual countries take offense to how their country’s character is portrayed, but Himaruya took in account of how other actual countries see that fictional country. For example, many countries consider Americans to always be eating cheeseburgers and are always loud and stubborn and picky about everything. Thus, the comical “Hetalia” America is born. It isn’t meant to poke fun at actual countries, but to make things in a light-comical and informative way. So, there you have it folks. There is a show about our history, and it is fun to actually know the events happening then watching “Hetalia” for it seems to make the show even more amusing to watch. You might even have some ‘ahha’ moments too.

“Furious 7” lives up to predessors

By HANNAH KRIEGER Sports & Recreation Editor The latest installment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise, “Furious 7” was released on April 3, and has already made more than $800 million worldwide. This movie is also the last movie Paul Walker filmed. Walker passed away in a car accident on Nov. 30, 2013. Walker was a passenger of a car that hit a light pole and then burst into flames. Walker had not completed filming the movie at the time of the accident. The studio remedied this by having his brother, Cody Walker, among several other people, stand in for Walker and used CGI to make them look like Walker. “Furious 7” resumes where “Fast and Furious 6” left off. The story is now dealing with the aftermath of the crew’s adventures in London and

bringing down criminal Owen Shaw. Now, Owen’s brother, Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), is seeking revenge on the family of Dom Toretto (Vin Diesel) for critically injuring his brother. Dom and his crew must work with a new federal agent, who introduces himself as Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell). If they’re able to complete a mission for him, he will give them the technology to track Shaw and allow the team to end his plans of revenge towards them. This movie also integrates the third movie (“Tokyo Drift”) in order to help explain Han’s death. The movie also resumes the struggles of Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) trying to regain her memory. This movie did not disappoint with fast car chases, dangerous stunts and massive explosions. Granted, a lot of these stunts and accidents are things that these characters should

impressed to see how the actors and actresses only get better through each movie, and it was apparent that these actors and actresses were very comfortable with playing their characters. The only thing the movie could have done differently would be to explain the side plots of the story more or to take them out altogether. The movie also handled saying good-bye to Walker’s character in a respectful and touching way. The movie ended with the song “See You Again,” with Diesel’s character narrating how much he will miss Walker’s character and how they will always be brothers. It was a very real and touching ending as it expressed Diesel’s reallife sentiments. I highly recommend this movie, especially if you are a fan of the series.

By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer When it comes down to getting a pet, there are obviously only two options: a cat or a dog. Now, you might add in that there are the rodents, the rabbits, the reptiles, the amphibians, the birds and the fishies, but those are not real pets. “Hold up, are you telling me that these other ones are not real?” No, I am just saying they all require cages or aquariums to be placed in, so they cannot be friends. Now, there are other animals to own such as a horse (which is like a big dog in a way) and other farm animals, but we are not talking about farm animals. We are talking about animals that live in your house. Back to dogs and cats. Let’s talk about why one is better than the other. Let’s start off with dogs. What is great about dogs? Well, you can crate–train them so they don’t roam your house like a child and destroy everything. They are expensive if you want a certain breed, which is why you should go to the humane society and give one of them a new home. “But I like puppies!” What?! Seriously, you want a puppy? A puppy that you have to potty train and remind it to do its business outside and then teach it manners? Sure it’s cute, but unless you are home to attend to it, it will get tiresome. It is like a small child.

Campaign logos in the 2016 race so far By WILLIAM THOMAS Staff Writer Campaign season is fast approaching here in the United States, and you know what that means. Candidates will be rolling out new logos for signs, posters and any sort of shenanigans they may need them for. Already, four candidates have announced their campaign: Ted Cruz, Republican Senator from Texas, Rand Paul, Republican Senator from Kentucky, Hillary Clinton, Democratic former Senator and Secretary of State and Marco Rubio, Republican Senator from Florida. Each has a distinct campaign logo as well. Ted Cruz was the first to announce his campaign and to unveil his campaign logo. At first glance it looks good—a nice teardrop with the clas-

announced his campaign in the aftermath of Clinton. Rubio has quite a nice logo. The lowercase letters are appealing to young, modern Americans, and the red offsets the Rand Paulian dark blue. The America dotting the eye, however, seems a bit forced, and brings up the biggest issue. Where are Alaska and Hawaii?! They are important states, too, don’t you think? Already, leaders from the states have commented on their lack of inclusion in Senator Rubio’s campaign. I guess you can chalk up two votes against Rubio this time around. I hope you all get involved this election cycle. It should be an exciting one, especially on the Republican side. Make your voice known. Go vote when you have the chance.

one of you humans groaning at the sound of rain. Probably because of all those flood warnings you get. But it is a happy time for my fellow earth worms and I. You see, when it rains, it is moist enough for us to worm (ha! I made a worm joke) our way over to another foreign land. The journey is always treacherous, though. Especially on this campus! If it rains only one day, we have a short amount of time to make it to the other side. If the sun comes out before we make it, most of

have to worry about the flying dragons that bring us to their children. Oh, they are the horrors in earthworm world. All we want is to go to our dream land, and they always ruin it. I can begin to describe the tales that our elders have told us about these filthy flying creatures. I have even heard that you humans keep them as pets! Why would you do that?! Oh, right. So, maybe you should love spring a bit more. After all, it only comes once a year, and it’s the only time we have an extended time to get to our final destination.

Spring from the view of a earthworm

By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer Hi. I read the article talking about the season of spring a few weeks ago and would like to rebuttal to that sarcastic article. First of all, I will have you know that spring is a joyous and wonderful season. At least for me, you humans always talk about how bad it is, but let me give you some insightful things from an earthworm’s prospective. So, as you all know, with spring comes April showers. I can hear every single

us will dry out. Although there are some nice humans who pick us up and toss us into the grass, it is not where we would like to go, and it leaves us vulnerable to those nasty feathered creatures of doom, but it is a caring gesture. Try to hide us in the grass next time… Maybe in the shade too. For those of us that live just on campus where the buildings of learning are, our dream is to make it to the moist soil of the place you call “Giddings lawn.” The soil is most delectable there.

So, off we go on our journey when it rains, hoping to make it to our destination. You forget we are small and insignificant to some of you humans. We have to squirm and whither, hoping that none of your loud and scary looking feet descend down upon us. By the way, some of us worms believe you humans can perform magic. After all, how do you change the appearance of your feet from day to day? It is a neat trick; perhaps I will start making tail shoes for my fellow worms. If that wasn’t enough, we

Letters to Georgetonia, Part 9: More Interviews

By FICELRATH and the Easter Bunny BackPage Editor Greetings, Georgetonia! Even as this month of April rains its homework projects down on us and washes away even the faintest trace of any free time we may have had, it brings with it the promise of May, of summer, of graduation—and for some, death. Look around you, my dearest subjects. How many of your fellow students are graduating seniors of Georgetonia? Once these seniors graduate, they will be dead to us, having gone on to Bigger And Better Things in a place called Real Life, when Alma Mater, our dear Georgetonia has taught them all that they have come here to learn. Few ever return after that darkest of days, but those who do carry with them a metaphor of rebirth and new life beyond the diploma. I have invited a special guest to come and discuss this idea of rebirth and spring and chocolate. Give it up for the Easter Bunny!
