Chapel speakers spoke of slavery in U.S.

Jerry Gore and Peggy Overly presented on spirituals and treatment of slaves in America By ANDREA BELLEW News Editor Jerry Gore and Peggy Overly team up to give interactive presentations on slavery and the Underground Railroad; they came to Georgetown College on Tuesday, Feb. 24, to give one of their presentations in the Chapel. Gore is a retired educator and CEO of Freedom Time; Overly is the Special Projects Coordinator for the Minority Alumni/ Friends Program at Morehead State University (freedomundergroundrailroad.com). Both Gore and Overly are founders of the National Underground Railroad Museum, Inc. located in historic Maysville, Ky. Freedom Time is a company that provides slave and Underground Railroad tours, presentations and exhibits. Their presentation started off with Overly coming up to talk about spirituals – religious songs that were created by slaves in the U.S. during the 1800s. She began by singing “Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child,” and then started to explain why spirituals were saug and created. Overly said, “They had been

Overly started to sing “City Called Heaven,” and then Gore started talking about what the conditions of slaves were like as they traveled on the ship– not being able to move, having to use the bathroom on themselves, and more. After this experience, he asked the participants to explain how they felt during the enactment. Many of them talked about feeling bad, constricted, hopeless or worthless. The two men who enacted the slave transporters said that they felt embarrassed. Once Gore was done with his presentation, the audience could look at artifacts – documents, shackles, whips, paintings and more – and ask questions.

News Former Governor Collins speaks on leadership

Issue 5

By ALEX CAUDILL Staff Writer On Tuesday, Feb. 24, former Governor Martha Layne Collins spoke to a packed room of students in the LRC’s Ward Room. Gov. Collins was the first and only female governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky; she served from 1983 to 1987. At the time of her election, she was the only female governor in the United States and was therefore, the highest ranking elected female Democrat. Gov. Collins also served as Executive Scholar in Residence at Georgetown College from 1998 to 2012. Collins began her speech by mentioning how good it was to be back at Georgetown and that her family comes from a long line of Georgetown College graduates. Then she began her discussion of leadership. “Leadership is so very important. You can be a leader anywhere, and the important thing is that we need lead-

Collins spoke at length about bringing a Toyota manufacturing plant to Kentucky. This was only the second Toyota plant to be brought to the United States, and ultimately Georgetown was chosen as the site for the new state of the art automobile manufacturing facility. Kentucky beat out Tennessee and other states for the bid to host the factory. Governor Collins ended her speech by saying that her style of leadership “was not about the publicity” because she wants “to work hard and see results.” Senior Adam Wetherington had the following to say about the former governor’s speech: “Governor Collins delivered words of wisdom that were valuable for everyone in attendance. It is clear that she has a passion for leadership and for developing the next generation of leadership.” Former Governor Collins was very well received by students who gave her a resounding round of applause after her inspiring speech.

Oscar ratings are at lowest in six years

By ANDREA BELLEW News Editor

According to “Variety,” the Oscars (Academy Awards) only averaged 36.6 million viewers and a 10.8 rating in the adult demographic (people aged 18-49). This is a 16 percent to 18 percent drop in viewers from last year, which had 43.7 million viewers and a 13.1 rating. This is the Oscar’s lowest total number of viewers of the past six years. (variety.com) According to “Variety,” the Oscars is not the only award show that has dropped in ratings during this awards season, but it still had better ratings than the Grammy Awards and the

Golden Globe Awards. Some major U.S. cities that make up big chunks of the Oscars market ended up dropping off in household ratings this year; Los Angeles, which is the top–rated market for the Oscars, went up 3 percent in ratings this year, but New York went down to 32.4 (a 13 percent drop) and Chicago went down to 32.5 (a 10 percent drop). (variety.com) “TheWrap” laid out some probable reasons why the Oscars took such a drop in ratings. The first reason mentioned is that there were not very many nominees that gained a lot of box office profit, which means there were not very many popular movies in the running.

The second reason “TheWrap” listed is that there was not a “big viral moment.” According to Variety, “The top moment was Lady Gaga’s medley from “The Sound of Music” and Julie Andrews joining her on stage, which drew 214,000 per minute globally and 145,000 per minute in the States; this was also the top moment on Twitter for the night.” Apparently, this viral moment was not enough to stop a big ratings drop though. The third problem, according to “TheWrap,” is that the show lasted too long. Viewers usually quit watching the show once the third hour begins to come up. This year, the Oscars went

KHS Column: Model of the Month By MORGAN ZIMMER Staff Writer This week’s KHS interview features our very own KHS Club President, Sean Kratchman. Sean embodies what “living a physically active lifestyle” means. The senior played four years of Georgetown football, majored in exercise science and minored in business administration. Sean holds multiple leadership and job positions around campus, in addition to being KHS Club President. Some of these positions include: peer tutor, Rec supervisor and RA. Sean was awarded the Earl Hundley Team Leadership Award in 2012, the NAIA Champion of Character Award in 2014 and the Tom Seals Perseverance Award in 2014. Anyone who knows Sean would describe him as extremely dedicated and passionate about everything he is involved in. Although Sean is now a Georgetown College football alum, he has not stopped living a physically active lifestyle. This week we caught up with the busy student–athlete–worker and asked a few questions… 1. Hey, Sean! What is your name, hometown and major? Leave a space for two word answers

Why college students should exercise By NOAH KRIEGER Staff Writer A recent survey has demonstrated that college students are more stressed out now than ever before. This stress, as trivial as it may seem, is slowly degrading your health. Stress can cause headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, depression, anxiety, diabetes, asthma and decreased bone density. In fact, approximately 75–90 percent of all doctor’s visits are for conditions instigated by excessive stress (webmd.com). Stress is caused by many factors, but the body’s primary

response to it is the release of the hormone cortisol; high levels of which are the primary cause of stress–related ailments. The function of this hormone is to prepare the body for the fight or flight response. This was a useful mechanism in the past, but is now usually harmful, as you can’t fight with that test you bombed to raise your score. The cortisol simply circulates in the body, unused and causing damage. This results in most college students ending up with constantly high levels of cortisol which can then suppress the immune system, making you more suscepti-

ble to illness. So now that I’ve basically convinced you that college is slowly killing you and I probably added to your amount of circulating cortisol (sorry about that) here’s the good news: exercise is the simple solution. Any form of exercise (such as yoga, cardio, dancing, lifting or hiking) holds the same stress–relieving benefits. Since cortisol is meant to prepare your body for the fight or flight response, by exercising you are using cortisol for its intended purpose and thereby eliminating it from your system. Exercise, being a form of stress, will release

some cortisol, but, over time, your body will adapt to the stress of exercise, raising the threshold at which it releases cortisol and minimizing the amount released. This effect transfers from exercise to real life situations, as people who regularly exercise have been shown to exhibit a decreased release of cortisol in stressful situations than their sedentary counterparts. Many of you may feel you have too much on your minds or too much to do to go exercise for any amount of time, but exercise will be beneficial in this case, as it actually serves as a form of meditation.

Speaking from experience, for the extent of your workout you will focus only on what you are doing and forget about whatever is stressing you out, allowing you to relax. Now you don’t have to go out and start exercising for endless hours to achieve these results. Any amount of exercise beyond what you are accustomed to, even an extra 15 minutes of walking, will grant these stress–reducing benefits. Start small and build from there. You will be amazed by the perceptible changes in your stress levels, as well as health and happiness.

Newman Center diversifies campus

By ALEX CAUDILL Staff Writer The Newman Center is the Catholic community at Georgetown College. The name “Newman” comes from Cardinal John Henry Newman, an Anglican priest who eventually became a Catholic Cardinal. Cardinal Newman was very passionate about the faith formation of college students and worked diligently to spread the Gospel throughout the 19th century. This is why college campuses all across the country that are not already Catholic institutions take the

The groundwork for the Newman Center was laid in the spring of 2013. Beginning in May of 2013, the Newman Center began to have Mass on campus each month. Mass is what Catholics call their worship service. Currently, there are over 200 Catholic students at Georgetown College, which is one of the largest amounts of Catholic Christians at the

College in recent memory. The Newman Center has received great support all across campus from different individuals. The group will have two more Masses on campus this semester, both celebrated by Father Linh who is the chaplain for the Newman Center. These will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 29 and Sunday, April 26.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: COURTNEY SAMMONS By TERESA CURTIS Staff Writer If you have ever been a spectator at a football or basketball game at Georgetown College, you have no doubt heard our next senior, Courtney Sammons, play in the pep band. Whether it be music, or hanging out in the English Nook in Pawling, or playing Apples to Apples in the Caf, Courtney has had an interesting journey getting to her senior year. She comes from a far away town known as Worthington, Ky., which is close to Ashland, Ky. She had her heart set on attending Georgetown College after visiting campus a few times and knowing that it felt different— but in a good way—from any other campus that she visited. Courtney is a dedicated student, majoring in English and minoring in classics. She will also be certified to teach middle and high school after she graduates. Guild Game of the week...or not By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer This week’s game will not be a certain game. In fact, I have been asked (cough) forced (cough) into having a small talk with four brilliant people.

Source: Zelda.wikia.com

Ganondorf is the villain of the “Legend of Zelda” games These four people wanted to discuss how they have be viewed in their games and how cruel the players have been to them. They want to share their

actual stories with you. Yes, so, shall I introduce them to you? Our hosts this week are Ganondorf from Legend of Zelda. Ganon: Che. I shall rule over Hyrule. I want the Triforce! Nothing will stop me. Mm’kay, so apparently no one has beaten his game. Next is Bowser from Mario. Bowser: Yo. I’m am so lonely in my castle. Oh my, you poor thing. Um… Then… Giovanni: The name is Giovanni. I am the best gym leader of Viridian City and the leader of Team Rocket. Also, this is my precious Persian. Aw, he’s so cute. Lastly, we have Doctor Eggman from Sonic. Dr. Eggman: I will dominate the entire world! (Insert evil laugh here) Alright, that is everyone, so I will tell a short backstory to each villain as they have told me in their prospective. Ganondorf, or Ganon as he is commonly nicknamed, is considered to be the incarnation of pure evil, greed and power. He is ruthless and cold to the bone, but he is extremely calculating with an ego. He believes he is the only one who is truly worthy of ruling

the kingdom of Hyrule. Ganon’s story begins by being born as a member of the Gerudo, who are all female. Yet,

Ganon was the only male and he was gifted with powerful magic. He holds the Triforce of Power. Did I get everything, Ganondorf? Ganondorf: You forgot to mention how weak Princess Zelda is to my mighty power and how no matter how many times that pesky elf tries to save the kingdom, it will never work. That is why I come back in every game made. Ah, my apologies. Next, Bowser. Bowser is sometimes known as King Koopa in Japanese. He repeatedly kidnaps (or attempts to kidnap) Princess Peach and tries to take over Mushroom Kingdom. His goal is to conquer all lands and eventually the entire uni-

verse. I believe that is it. Wow, short. Bowser: No. You forgot to mention that I sometimes help the heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom against common threats and participate with them in numerous events in other games. Oh yeah. Mario Kart, I forgot about that. So now… Giovanni. Giovanni is… Giovanni: I am the head of Team Rocket and the Viridian Gym Leader. You all may know my ridiculous members Jessie, James, Meowth, Butch and Cassidy. You could say Team Rocket is similar to the mafia, as we take out others. Pokémon should be used for power to rule the world, along with special artifacts and rare Pokémon to further my plan in global domination. That is nice. I shall stop you there as Dr. Eggman has only a few lines before this ends. So, to make this short, Dr. Eggman also wants to conquer the world. Okay. Done, that is the end of… Dr. Eggman: WAIT! I use diabolical war machines in my thirst to conquer the world and I am constantly building armies of robots. But that stupid Sonic is always ruining my plans and… (Continues talking about the blue hedgehog) That is all for this week. Hopefully I will not be asked by villains to do this next week… Hopefully.

a happily married man and father. He remembered that there was such a disconnect between his job as a family man and his role as Christian Grey. When he first played Christian Grey, he was shocked about what was going on and what he had to do. He couldn’t believe what was actually happening. [I would like to interject a side note here and say that if this role was going to compromise Dornan’s family values, then why did he take this job? I realize some other actor would have been offered the job. But I wonder what would have happened if every person offered the role of Christian Grey just turned it down. Wishful thinking, I know.] Perhaps another worrying thought is the fact that Dornan said that he played bad characters, serial killers and guys who don’t treat women the way they should be treated, and yet he still claimed to have a hard time playing Christian Grey. Dakota Johnson also shared a similar perspective to her co–star. Johnson claimed that she hopes that no one actually goes to see the movie. Johnson called the movie “inappropriate” and wished that her parents, her brother’s friends, and other friends who she grew up with do not see it. [It has in fact been reported that Johnson’s mother refuses to see the movie.] She also stated that some of the scenes were painful to shoot, emotionally draining and she even got whiplash from being thrown. If the actors themselves are questioning the movie, questioning why people are fascinated with it and asking people not to go see it, then why in the world are people still insisting on seeing it? I simply ask that if you are thinking about watching this movie or reading the books that you reconsider. Think about what you are polluting your mind with. Is it really worth it? [No]. Therefore, why waste your time and money on something that is not

edifying to your mind? There are so many other books (“Harry Potter,” “Eleanor and Park,” “Moll Flanders,” “Wuthering Heights,” even “Twilight” is still a better love story) and movies (“About Time,” “What If,” “500 Days of Summer,” “He’s Just Not That Into You,” “How to Lose a Guy [*cough* Christian Grey *cough*] in Ten Days,” “Juno” and “10 Things I Hate About You”) out there that are worth your time and interest. By TERESA CURTIS Staff Writer About a week ago, I was scrolling through Facebook after class out of habit. While browsing, I came across this video of an interview between Dr. Phil and a young woman who recently went viral for the outrageous things she was stating. Yes, I know. Dr. Phil, really? Hey, it’s good daytime television, people. But I digress. The young woman has become an internet sensation because of her views on abuse in relationships. This issue has been coming into really strong light as of late, and has particularly become important due to the permeating “rape culture” that surrounds us on a daily basis. There are now, thankfully, crisis centers for young adults, women and children to seek shelter and a safe haven from their oppressors. However, this young lady states that abuse is a healthy thing for a relationship. Yes, you read that right. Eighteen year old Romina Garcia has a blog where she posted a video stating “if your boyfriend hits you, it’s a sign of love.” She believes that she is an inspiration and role model among her 153,000 fans, even though she is completely out of touch with reality and unaware of the dangerous message she is sending to impressionable young females everywhere. (You can view the entire statement and video at huffingtonpost.com). I just want to reiterate

Why the Asher professors rule

By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer

What I am about to say is based on my opinion and my opinion alone. I do not want someone taking offense to this, as it is based on an observation that I have made, and I am not trying to insult anyone. It has occured to me that there is something odd about professors in the Asher Science Building. You never see them leave Asher unless it is to the Student Center (which is rare) or to go home. Never once do you see them outside their little Asher home. Yet, the Asher professors seem to know everyone! You can talk to a few of them and they can rattle off a list of friends they have in other departments. They can give you a professor or facility member’s name and informa-

Yup, it is still fun, especially when other professors of Asher are looking for this one professor. Also, humans vs zombies is always in Asher because of the awesomeness that is contained within. So, there you have it. Asher professors are the most awesome professors on campus. Why? They give us free food, they are mentioned in other classes outside their domain, they know everyone on campus, they have Nerf guns, they bring coffee for us and we play games with them.

know it today was established. Within 100 years, we were already fighting each other; brother killing brother only brought destruction. However, another hundred years passed and America triumphed nearly untouched from World War Two, ruling the West with unquestioned authority. When Soviet Russia fell in 1991, America shone as the only world superpower, and nothing has changed since. Despite our relative youth, terrible Civil War and decentralized culture, America knows how to win. In the

country that outlasted Stalinism and thus won the Cold War. We entered a cultural high in the nineties that took a hit in September of 2001. But we hit the radical terrorists back harder, effectively beating Al Qaeda and the Taliban into submission. Don’t mess with the best. And that is why the USA is a phenomenal nation. Yes, we make mistakes, have adversity and stumble, but we don’t give up; we always come out on top. I don’t believe that this trend will end anytime soon.

Tea parties, eagles and freedom

By EVAN MOORE Opinion Editor The best thing that the British ever did was establish their colonies and treat 13 of them badly enough to where they broke away. Thus was born the United States of America, a nation founded on a belief of freedom of the people from oppressive government. Originally, the American government had little to no power—it was only after four years of unrest that the Constitution was signed and the true government as we

second half of the nineteenth century, the United States’ citizens made more important inventions and contributions than any other 50-year period before. Steel, the repeating rifle, gatling gun, kerosene lamps, the lightbulb, the air conditioner, the phonograph and the telephone—among other things—were made in this time, and it led the United States into a time of unprecedented prosperity for the middle and upper class: the Roarin’ Twenties. However, the working class was oppressed. Our gov-

ernment passed regulation and labor unions began forming. It once again shows a time when America faced a national problem, addressed it and fixed it. There is nothing we can’t do. I wipe a tear from my eye as a bald eagle screeches in the distance. Fighting the Germans and then opposing Communists during the twentieth century led us to where we are, only bringing our people together. We defeated segregation. Despite the demoralization from the Vietnam Conflict, we rose through the 1980s into the

WWWHHHHHIIIIIZZZZZZZZZZ----“Ouch!” thought came (metaphorically) flying through the air and smacked into her head. It took a moment to unload, and while she waited, she rubbed her temple where the (metaphoric) entrywound had been. Then the full force of the Idea carried on the Thought was realized to her, and she really did fall out of her chair. The mention of “common people” in her previous paragraph of thought had sparked a connection with the medieval serfs. Serfs served knights, knights worked for kings, and kings— they ruled the world. True, it was a collective effort, and there was far too much fighting over trivial pursuits. But the system, the chain of command, the Great Chain of Being—what if there was such a thing in Geogetonia? “A Dictator,” she said to herself, a smile growing across her face. “Why didn’t I think of that?” Even as the thought cohered in her mind, it darkened her face with a frown. The people of Georgetonia would never accept such a thing; it contradicted everything that she had just gone through— the long, emotional roller–coaster of a thought process. No; there was no way to make the people accept this—unless... Throwing herself up off the floor, she ran to the window: Eureka! What was a dictator? An absolute

ruler, a tyrant—no no, that would never do. A queen—the virgin queen, the Golden Age—should be benevolent, kind; cruel when she needs to be and merciful whenever possible; loved and hated, clever and powerful. But if she was powerful without reason, then the people would grow to fear such power, and fear turns to hatred, and hatred breeds mutiny. Mutiny leads to stakes and fire. Not a pretty sight. There must be some kind of danger for Georgetonia to be rescued from before a queen could take the throne, to make the people think it was their idea to have such a ruler. And a ruler must always have a nobility, or at least a parliament, advisers, giving the appearance of listening to the people. Listening allows the people to feel heard, and if they feel heard, they feel content. Contentment staves off mutiny and revolution for at least a little while longer than if a ruler were to not listen to her people. FicElrath smiled contently and leaned back in her strange dorm room chair. The snow continued to glitter tauntingly outside (begging the question of why the semester was called ‘Spring’), but just then the heater clicked on. “Hmm. Time for hot chocolate.”
