Landry Jung named as 2015 Belle of the Blue On Saturday night, Georgetown crowned the winner of a 65–year–old Tiger tradition By MEAGAN HENRY Staff Writer “Alma Mater, our dear Georgetown. Belle of the Blue ‘Tis Thee we crown...” Finding itself as the second line of Georgetown’s Alma Mater, Belle of the Blue is an annual and historically important event held at Georgetown College. This year, the scholarship pageant was held in the John L. Hill Chapel on Saturday, March 7, and was emceed by former Miss Kentucky and GC student Jessica Casebolt. The first page of Saturday night’s program, stated from GAC Traditions Co–Chairs, MaKayla Jackson and Joshua Ward, said, “Georgetown hails as the Belle of the Bluegrass... one young lady is selected to represent Georgetown as its namesake, the Belle of the Blue.” This event is unique to Georgetown College, and that is one aspect of it that Student Government Association President Turner Altman really enjoyed. “I think events like these are awesome because it shows what we have at Georgetown is really special, and I am very thankful for

The theme of this year’s Belle of the Blue contest was “My Old Kentucky Home.” The background of the stage had a large cutout of the state of Kentucky and was surrounded by symbols of the state: a jockey’s uniform, a banjo, a horseshoe, the crest of the state, Abraham Lincoln and a cardinal. Many audience members were extremely displeased with the issues that arose during Saturday night’s event, but many also applauded Casebolt for her efforts to combat the difficulties of the night. After the deliberation of scores, Belle of the Blue 2014, senior Elizabeth Feldpausch took her final farewell walk and assisted in the presentation of awards. The Miss Congeniality award was presented to senior Megan Koleen Norris (representing Hambrick Village). The Overall Scholarship Winner was Katy Harvey. Second runner–up was Jessica Kindrick, and First Runner– up was Kylie Fitzsimmons. Freshman Landry Jung was crowned 2015 Belle of the Blue. After being crowned Landry said, “I was really surprised; actually I wasn’t expecting this at all.” When asked what her overall favorite experience of participating in Belle of the Blue was, she said that just getting to work with the girls was what she enjoyed most.

News The Lily that Refused to Wilt: A Baby’s Survival
Issue 7
By BRADEN BOCARD Staff Writer The extreme, freezing temperatures this winter have been a potential danger to everyone experiencing them in the United States, but were especially dangerous for an infant in Utah this past week. Lily Groesbeck, an 18-month old girl, and her 25 year old mother Lynn were in a car wreck that left the car in a freezing cold river. The wreck is estimated to have happened around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, March 6. The wreck was not discovered until about 12:30 p.m. the next day. The two were trapped in the car for about 14 hours in the river. The car was upside down, leaving Lily hanging from her car seat. The mother, Lynn, did not survive, but thanks to two fishermen discovering the wreck, Lily may survive the ordeal. According to police reports, Lynn was on her way home from her parent’s house when her car collided with

U.S. News has ranked graduate schools
By CASSIDY CLAYTON Staff Writer Earlier today, U.S. News published their 2016 Best Graduate Schools Ranking. These rankings typically include law, business, medicine, education and engineering. This year, however, nursing schools have also been added. The ranking is evaluated by the standardized test scores of the students, employment outcomes of the graduates and more. For example, mean income upon graduation is a calculating factor. For schools being examined for the law category, they looked at how the graduates of those schools got their jobs ,and a lot of weight was given to this

It took thirtieth place. For the medicine category, Harvard kept the number one spot for research. Stanford came in second. Johns Hopkins shared third with the University of California, San Francisco, Calif. New York University and Vanderbilt University are now tied for fourteenth. In the nursing category, the University of Pennsylvania was first among the master’s programs.

Move over horses—here come hamsters
By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer
Hamster racing. Yes, it is something that exists, and it is quite an adorable and odd sport. Hamsters are placed in hamster wheels or hamster balls (sometimes these are fitted to miniature racing vehicles, kind of like the ones you build in Boy Scouts) and raced down a straight 30 foot (nine meter) course. At most races, the first hamster to cross the finish line in the shortest amount of time wins. A world record for this was 38 seconds in 2001. In the United Kingdom, bets can be placed on hamster races
through online bookmakers. The online bookmaker Blue Square organized the first hamster racing series. A series of qualifying rounds were held over a week until the final race. The event was webcasted live, showed up in the “Daily Mail” and “Sun” newspapers and also in reports on the BBC London and Sky News. Hamster racing was promoted because in 2001, there was a cancellation in British horse racing due to an epidemic of foot and mouth disease. Now, professional hamster racing can be seen in the United States and Asia as well as the United Kingdom. There are always two classes of ham-
ster racing chosen from these categories: dwarfs and Syrians or novice and expert or longhair and short–hair. There have been three different sponsorships for hamster racing in the past 10 years. The first one is MTV which began the promotion of HamTrak ’06 in May 2006. This was a world tour of professional hamster races that were sponsored by The Sun, XFM, Pimp My Ride and others. Held on May 19, 2006, the HamTrak race was at the Hammywood Hills Rodent Raceway and won by the New Media Age sponsored Team Hot Rodent. The hamster was an eight month old female Syrian ham-
ster. It was her twenty–fourth win of her career. Petco had a biannual hamster race in 2007 called Petco Hamster Ball Derby. There were more than 14,000 amateur racers of hamsters. Winners received various prizes like gift cards, training equipment and hamster treats. The most recent sponsorship of hamster racing is the Hong Kong Racing League. It was held in 2013 and founded by James Cooper and Bryn Solomon. The first race was held on Jan. 13. The vehicles that the hamster wheels/hamster balls were on were commonly spherical balls, but some contestants used different design
modifications to increase speed and efficiency of the wheel. This league is mostly male dominant, but they are trying to sponsor more female hamster racers out there to get a better dynamic. Hamster racing seems like a very interesting concept of a sport. It resembles horse racing with racing an animal and betting on said animal, but it is also very different. It isn’t all on a professional level, and novices can get into it as well. It works similar to the Boys Scout derby races, but with a hamster wheel/hamster ball that can be modified in various ways. Oh, and a hamster. You cannot forget the hamster.

Crossfit is defined as constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity. Greg Glassman founded this principle in 2000 after combining multiple successful exercise elements into one and turning it into a competitive sport. A Crossfit workout can include elements such as interval training, Olympic weightlifting, plyometrics, powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics and other exercises. Soda causes damage to health
By NOAH KRIEGER Staff Writer
Many people would like to eat healthier, but become overwhelmed and don’t know where to begin. A great starting point is the elimination of soft drinks. Simply cutting them out will significantly lower your risk of many diseases. You have (undoubtedly) heard about high fructose corn syrup being used in soft drinks, but do you know why it is bad for your health? High fructose corn syrup sounds like “fruit sugar.” Seems harmless, right? Not exactly. This sweetener is industrially produced
and is not chemically similar to natural fructose, nor is it biologically processed in the same manner. According to an article written by Joseph Mercola, an alternative medicine proponent, this compound has been shown to cause metabolic syndrome, diabetes, immune system damage and even speed up the aging process. Additionally, it was shown to contain toxic levels of mercury due to chlor–alkali products used in its manufacture. If you think you’re avoiding high fructose corn syrup by drinking diet beverages, think again. A recent study on 60,000 women found that those who drank two diet beverages daily
were twice as likely to die of heart disease (Mercola). One of the deadliest artificial sweeteners, aspartame, is shown to convert to formaldehyde within the body where it can cause anything from a ringing in the ears to blindness. Additionally, most studies conducted on rats fed artificial sweeteners resulted in the test subjects being riddled in cancerous tumors. Since rats are over 95 percent biologically similar to humans, the risk of cancer seems quite high to take for something that has never even been proven to aid weight loss. A preservative commonly used in all types of soft drinks
is sodium benzoate, a compound made up of benzoic acid and sodium hydroxide. For a little context, benzene is the main ingredient in liquid wrench, paint strippers and rubber cements. It was previously used in the manufacture of rubber, but was discontinued due to the high rates of leukemia among employees (healthwyze.org). Long term effects of sodium benzoate are largely unknown, but it has been shown to destroy parts of DNA which can result in health problems for future generations due to what you drink today. When vitamin C is present with sodium benzo-
ate, as it often is, it results in pure benzene which can cause immune damage, leukemia and other cancers. These are just a few of the common, harmful ingredients in soft drinks. Water is by far the best alternative, but you may be looking for a drink with caffeine. Although the best course of action would be to break your caffeine dependency, eat better and sleep enough. If you can’t do that though, brewing your own tea is a great substitute, as the caffeine in tea will provide mental and physical alertness and focus without jitters or any other side effects.

Guild game of the week: Kirby By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer It has come to my attention that there has been something lacking in these articles. Both villain and protagonist have yet to be represented in anything I have written that might possibly involve them. Normally, I would write for a while, talking about this character before revealing him (unless the title already does that), but this time, I believe some light should automatically shine on our courageous pink… ball… thing… KIRBY! Kirby has the ability to copy the powers of his foes by eating them in a way. He is like a vacuum that sucks in the villains and suddenly gains their power. He can also suck in random air to float for a while, which is nifty in video games. Kirby is also considered one of the most widely-known video game characters, and he is always being ranked as one of the most iconic figures of the game world. The designer of Kirby was Masahiro Sakurai who developed “Kirby’s Dream Land” for the Game Boy in 1992. over you for every class you drop or willingly miss. As soon as they slip your mind, your friends want to eat out. You then have to deny going out because you have no money for leisure, much less to pay off thousands of loans. Not much can be done about this. Unfortunately, only policy makers can truly change our financial struggle. Your study habits directly reflect your grades… if you have to study for your classes at all. Depending on the classes you need to take for your major and your level of academic talents, studying may be the worst activity you will ever have to do.
High school could have been easy for you. It could have also been the worst experience of your life. Either way, you are here now, a student at a private Christian college. Good for you! So, why is it still so hard to be a student? It does not matter when you decided on the major you might want to pursue or when you were admitted. From the second month in college, life got a lot harder for you. You still have the social agenda of a teenager, but now you have to buy groceries and write essays that seem unnecessary on every level. Let’s be honest, it sucks. Not many people get over it. They drop out due to stress or financial instability. Those who make it to the second semester have probably found their niche. time and location! This is not going to be the best four years of your life. Hopefully, high school wasn’t either. I don’t believe any singular event should be the best activity you participate in. Instead, college—and all its stressors—are preliminary measures to prepare you for that awful sounding “real life.” As horrible as the cliché is, we do need to know how to survive. But this still doesn’t answer the question, why is it so hard? Neurologically, our brain can only focus on one thing at a time. Multitasking is simply dividing your attention between many objects for different periods of time, not doing many things at once. Because of this, 15 plus hours of classes, countless hours of studying and “real life” prep really is something hard to do. The best way we can overcome our inhibitions is to try and relax in our own way. Many articles exist that can calm your body and mind, but the best mental advice is to talk through your troubles. We are social creatures, and ranting is a bonding experience. The important part is to lift each other up through our struggles. After all, we are all in the same boat.

Ale 8–One should be on campus
By KAYLA BOSWELL Staff Writer
Having been in Kentucky for almost four years, I have come to realize what our school is lacking in their options for drinks. With this awesome drink so close to where we are located, one would think that we would have it available as an option at our school. Yet, we are not given this option, and I believe it would be beneficial to the college as well as the drink’s company. I’m talking about Ale 8–One. The Ale 8 factory is located in Winchester. If you haven’t had the chance to tour the factory and you have a love for this soda pop, do it. They give you a free, fresh Ale 8 (or so I’m told. I haven’t had the opportunity to tour yet, but I

I’m not trying to say that opinion articles are good or bad, just that they aren’t for the weak or faint of heart. You will be judged and talked about no matter what stance you take because, let’s face it, opinions are difficult. Not everyone is going to agree on everything. So be brave, stand up for your opinion and write the sassiest article out there. Just be wary that there are going to be critics that will want to really rip your opinion to pieces. This is what keeps the fire lit under the importance of opinion articles, because debate is always fun if conducted in a healthy manner. My opinion on opinions? Have one.

After selecting my opinion and the style in which to display it, I really go into it. The Opinion section is the cornerstone of the paper because it’s unique. Yes, News
articles are important for staying current with the world. Sports and Recreation articles keep you updated on the KHS Club and health and fitness articles. The Arts & Entertainment section keeps up with the latest technology, games, movies or books. But opinion writers get to dish on the juicy, trivial and even controversial issues in today’s society. Although this is the main goal, sometimes there are those opinion articles that just leave you unsatisfied. Either their opinion upsets you or challenges your beliefs in
