MAGES is a two-year interdisciplinary program designed to prepare students for professional careers in government, NGOs, the private sector, and higher education. Featuring a unique curriculum, outstanding faculty, and small classes, the MAGES program is an attractive choice for students interested in European affairs who want to make a difference in the world. What makes Georgetown University a great place to study Europe? First, the MAGES program is housed at the BMW Center for German and European Studies in the internationally renowned Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service. The resources and reputation of the Center, combined with the fantastic array of educational and professional opportunities available through the School of Foreign Service, are simply unrivalled. Second, Georgetown University is located in Washington, DC – home to one-half of the transatlantic partnership. In a rapidly changing world, US-European relations have endured and even gained in significance; effective solutions to a host of regional and global challenges can and will spring from a close and constructive transatlantic relationship. The BMW Center helps to sustain this historic partnership by educating the next generation of transatlantic leaders – leaders with the knowledge and skills to address global challenges.

WIDEN & D Widen & Deepen
The MAGES Curriculum During two years of intensive study, MAGES students widen their understanding of contemporary Europe and deepen their expertise in a personally chosen academic concentration. Throughout, they have the personal attention and guidance of five fulltime dedicated faculty at the BMW Center as well as the 80+ faculty (engaged in seven other MA programs) within the School of Foreign Service. Widening introduces students to multiple disciplinary perspectives on Europe – Political Science, History, Economics, and Culture – through five required core courses. From these courses, students acquire a broad array of analytic tools and theoretical building blocks to tackle key issues in European affairs.
Deepening entails the development of tailored concentrations that express students’ individual areas of interest and expertise. Some examples of concentrations that MAGES students have created are: • Foreign Aid, Investment, and Development • EU-U.S. Relations with the Arab World • Transatlantic Security and Counterterrorism • Muslims in Europe in a Post-9/11 World • EU-U.S. Environmental Politics MAGES students may also choose concentrations that track one of the five graduate-level certificate programs in the School of Foreign Service: • Arab Studies • Asian Studies • Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies • International Business Diplomacy • Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies

The Capstone Project Students complete the capstone of their concentrations with a final masters project. Students present their masters projects at the MAGES Final Colloquium in the spring of their second year. For many students, the masters project represents not just the end of a program of study, but the beginning of a career – it is very common for students to use their masters projects as a way of demonstrating expertise in a particular policy area, thus serving as a springboard to employment.
MAGES allowed me to pursue both a regional and a functional concentration: The core courses provided German and European focus, but I was free to choose electives to build a marketable degree.

Earning a MAGES degree at Georgetown University was an inspiring and challenging experience, and one that continues to pay dividends 14 years after graduation. Today, it represents for me a unique professional degree with which to differentiate my educational background in the marketplace while demonstrating a European specialization within my field. MAGES Class Prof ile
The BMW Center for German and European Studies welcomes close to twenty students to the MAGES program each year. In past years, 20-30% of the incoming class have been international students from across Europe and throughout the world. Prospective students average two years of professional experience, although we do consider applicants who have just completed their undergraduate degrees. The interdisciplinary design of the MAGES program
attracts students with wide-ranging interests and varied educational and professional backgrounds, all of whom share a common interest in European affairs. Students have strengths in different academic areas and are able to draw upon and learn from one another’s expertise. This cooperative environment promotes a high level of intellectual exploration both in and out of the classroom. The small class size also allows for close interaction between students and faculty.
