A Monthly Newsletter from the Executive Director of the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security Hello and welcome to WomenPeaceWire! I am thrilled to be the inaugural Executive Director of the new Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security. As part of its mission, the Institute will sponsor rigorous, evidence-based and policy oriented research to help close the gender data gap and raise awareness on the impact of women’s participation in peace and security efforts worldwide. We look forward to collaborating with individuals and organizations in this field! Overview of Activities for the Past Month: The Institute celebrated its official launch on February 20th with an event featuring a panel discussion with Tina Brown (Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Beast/Newsweek), Dr. Claudia Paz y Paz (Attorney General of Guatemala), Ambassador Donald Steinberg (Deputy Administrator, USAID), Narghis Nehan (Founder of Equality for Peace and Democracy in Afghanistan), and Zin Mar Aung (Burmese Political Activist). In addition to those who attended in person, nearly 2,000 individuals viewed the live webcast - and the video footage of the event has been accessed over 37,000 times since the event. We are so excited to have so many people from around the world be part of the Institute’s celebration! Additionally, we continue our preexisting projects, such as the oral histories collection, expansion of our online repository, etc. Most recently, we interviewed four incredible women leaders from Zimbabwe, Bangladesh, Ukraine and Syria who were visiting D.C. through a program sponsored by the Women’s Democracy Network. You can learn more about our Profiles in Peace: Oral Histories Project online. I also had the honor of serving as the Humanitas Visiting Professor in Women’s Rights at the University of Cambridge this month where I delivered a series of public lectures and a concluding symposium on Gender Equality: A Moral and Foreign Policy Imperative.

DR. MUHAMMAD YUNUS Nobel Peace Prize Laureate April 17th 3 pm – 4 pm Lohfrink Auditorium Georgetown University JOHN CARROLL WEEKEND: A NEW GLOBAL AGENDA FOR WOMEN, PEACE & SECURITY A Panel with Dean Lancaster, Amb. Verveer, The President of Kosovo, Leader Nancy Pelosi & Monica McWilliams April 20th 2 pm – 3:30 pm The Grosvenor House, London, UK

Spotlight on Research: As former U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, noted when she first announced the creation of the Institute in December 2011, glaring gaps in research and understanding persist in the field of women, peace and security. As we set our Institute’s research agenda, we are most interested in better understand what roles women play and what their impact is on issues of 1) Conflict Prevention and Early Warning Monitoring, 2) Peacemaking and Conflict Management Initiatives, 3) Humanitarian Emergencies and Building Resilience, 4) State-building: Political Transitions, Transitional Justice, and Security Sector Reform. We are also in the midst of planning a research conference in early June 2013 to bring together the world’s foremost thought-leaders and practitioners to have a dialogue about the critical gaps in understanding and knowledge innovation in this field. Our partnership with The Institute for Inclusive Security continues to flourish. Feel free to visit our online research repository to access data and information including articles, reports, anecdotes, international legal documents, etc. Recent additions include a brand new publication from Inclusive Security called, “A Women’s Guide to Security Sector Reform”. Thank you for your support and continued interest in our work. I wish you all the best in your endeavors. Respectfully, Melanne Verveer !
