1978, the renowned Master of Arts in Arab Studies Program (MAAS) in Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service provides rigorous training in the language, history, culture, society, politics, and economics of the contemporary Arab world. The MAAS program is housed within the Center for Contemporary Arab Studies, the only academic center in the United States focusing exclusively on the Arab world. ounded in
Under the instruction of interdisciplinary faculty, MAAS students design a program of study and develop expertise on contemporary issues relevant to the Middle East and North Africa, including: Statecraft, Governance, and Authoritarianism International Development Refugees and Humanitarian Emergencies Business and Diplomacy Women and Gender Studies Arts, Literature, and Culture U.S. Foreign Policy Historiography and Archival Research Water and Resources
The program’s intensive Arabic instruction and unique Arabic content courses, supported by the largest and oldest Arabic language department in the country, further cultivate an in-depth understanding of the region. MAAS graduates have distinguished themselves in fields such as diplomatic service, international finance, media, human rights and development, and as U.S. Congressional staff members and faculty at leading universities.
What Makes MAAS Unique?
Arabic is the cornerstone. With intensive language instruction and unique
content courses taught in Arabic, students cultivate Arabic proficiency and an indepth understanding of the region. Arabic—and other foreign language courses for those who have already achieved Arabic proficiency—are supported by a language scholarship from the Graduate School at Georgetown, making them free of charge to MAAS students.
We take an interdisciplinary approach. In addition to taking courses with CCAS
faculty in a range of disciplines such as history, political science, anthropology, and political economy, students can take advantage of all that Georgetown has to offer across its programs, as well as access classes at 13 universities through a Washington-area consortium, allowing them to design comprehensive and unique programs of study suited to their academic and professional goals.
Washington DC is your classroom. Immersed in a truly global city, the MAAS
program provides opportunities for students to engage with world leaders, policy makers, artists, activists, and entrepreneurs at the forefront of today’s most pressing issues. Funding opportunities abound. Approximately 75% of students—U.S. and
international students alike—receive tuition scholarships from the MAAS program, while additional summer grants provide opportunities for internships, language acquisition, study abroad and field research.
