Pinecone -precedence We first look at the pinecone and its responsiveness to solar enerygy. In the precedence, we explored conceptual projects where one of the buildings imitates the pinecone’s structure and mathematic patterm to optimise solar exposure
and concept In the experiment below, we explored through physical models the cross patterns which can be created by a manipulation in the structure. At this point, these explorations are without goals.
Digital Modelling
Again, we look at the crossing patterns, but through the medium of digital modelling. This crossing patterns explors the solar receptiveness in relation to the change in overall structure. The conclusion of the experiment can be seen on the right. The theory is that the structure will be more exposed to light when the structure creates a point towards a direction (vertically) - ideally upward. The cross patterns catches more light due to the fact that it forms four triangle surfaces within one section which reflect the light towards the midpoint.

Further explorations look into the different forms trying to incorporate this form into architecture. Directly to the right, we looked at its application considering the Fibonacci patterns. Below, we look at its structural realisties and viability.

Proposals
Exploring the concept of building underground rather than up. This idea came about in an aspect to tackle with the issue of noise, but more importantly the political impact the building will have on the site.
Based on the precedent study we did on Habitat 67, we try to incorporate its idea into our design. However, due to the limited space the structure could not cope with the site, and the view will be limited.
We made a decision to further push the concept into boat houses, we wanted this to make a metaphorical link with Cardiff Bay. In this proposal, we gave parking space to the boats.

Finally, we look into continuing the promenade starting from Bute park and the Millenium stadium and linking the whole sequence of space to Cardiff railway station.
On the left are the site map showing some of the proposals. This includes the change we made to the carpark where we reroute the access point and giving more space to it. During research in the excavation, we found the arch structures which we decided could be used to create an under-carpark retail space.
