Monday - Friday • Hours: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Summer just wouldn’t be the same without the excitement and adventure of Kids’ University! In 2013, the spirit and tradition of Kids’ University day camp continues with a summer full of games, arts and crafts, field trips, swimming and new friendships. The mission of Kids’ University is to provide a safe and wholesome environment for kids to come and enjoy their summer. Campers will have daily opportunities to learn and have incredible amounts of FUN through diverse activities! Each week has its own special theme which instructors, guest speakers and visitors bring to life. Planned activities for each theme will be age-appropriate, varying in content based on the age of the child. The teachers who work for Kids’ University are our biggest asset. Their special interest in today’s youth and their enthusiasm are what make Kids’ University a wonderful experience. Licensed teachers, recent graduates, community professionals, and university students combine their experience, talents and personalities to make a unique experience each year. All of our teachers have passed a comprehensive background check and are first aid and CPR certified. Certified lifeguards and your child’s teachers are always present during their time at the pool. Campers must be comfortable in the water and able to swim unassisted. They may use floaties or life jackets. Minimum water depth is four feet. Kids’ University will provide one daily snack and drinks throughout each day. Also, students will receive a souvenir for each week of attendance. Children should bring their own sack lunch and additional snacks, if desired. Register for one week, all six remaining weeks or any combination of weeks. Registration is on a first-paid, first-enrolled basis. Children will not be guaranteed a place in Kids’ University until the registration fee is paid. Refunds will not be granted unless the Department of Continuing Education is notified by 4:45 p.m. on the Wednesday prior to each week’s initial class meeting. A signed waiver of liability and emergency contact form are required. Family discount - $7 off per student for families with three or more children enrolled. Space is limited in each class so don’t wait or the week(s) you want will be full!

What a Wonderful World

June 24-28 There are so many amazing things about our world out there! You’ll see how beautiful rainbows are made, visit with some amazing animals and learn about some breathtaking landmarks. Since we want to help keep our world wonderful, you’ll also learn how to take care of it and put your plans into action at Kids’ University! You won’t forget how helping others can keep our world wonderful too! This week you’ll travel to the Georgia Department of Natural Resource’s GoFish Education Center in Perry to learn how important wildlife conservation is!

When I Grow Up

Color War!

July 8-12 We’re sure you’ve been asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” This week we’ll help you explore the answer to that question! You’ll get to visit with people in many different professions and learn how their job contributes to our community. Find out why your school teachers work so hard to teach you biology, math, history and more! See how many professionals use the information they learned in school every day to do their job! You’ll also dress up as what you would like to be when you grow up!

July 22-26 Which team will you be on? Green or blue? What will the theme be? When the competition begins, no one knows, but the “break out” of the games will be exciting and sure to surprise you! Color wars are a long time summer camp tradition all over the country, and we’re bringing it to Kids’ University! Of course, it’s not really a war. It’s actually 5 days of ridiculous FUN and games! The entire camp is split into teams, and each team will have a theme to follow. You’ll create songs, costumes, team spirit banners and more to cheer your team on. In the end, even after a week of fun competition (swim races, obstacle courses, silly games, etc.), we remind our campers that we’re not at war and the camp will unite as one at the final ceremony.

It’s a Mystery Activate

July 1-5 (July 4 is a holiday) Did you know that staying active does wonders for you? It’s amazing! Staying active can do so much more than strengthen your bones and muscles! It can help you build a strong immune system, strengthen your heart and lungs, give you more energy, and improve memory and concentration! All you have to do is play! You’ll swim, dance, run, jump, climb, skate and throw. Your body is an amazing machine and it needs daily maintenance including the right food. Learn how to choose the right fuel to keep your body and brain running in high gear. You’ll also take a trip to visit some of our town’s favorite places where we can get active!

July 15-19 Mysterious things are happening this week at Kids’ U, and we need your help to solve them! Come and join our Kids’ University detective team! Use your observation skills, collect fingerprints, follow the tracks and analyze handwriting to gather the clues to unravel the many mysteries at camp this week. Campers will participate in scavenger hunts and will also learn how archaeology and paleontology have uncovered the mysteries of the past. Rising 4th through 7th graders will visit the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds in Macon. Fee: Grades K-3: $99 Grades 4-7: $129

Camp Rewind July 29-Aug. 2 Not ready for summer to end? Good, because we’re not either! You’re going to squeeze in one more week of summer fun at Kids’ University! You’ll play your favorite Kids’ U games, swim one more week at the pool and spend time with your camp friends before going back to school. You’ll end the summer with many of your favorite activities from weeks past, and don’t forget our end of camp party on Friday! Fee: $99

Georgia College Theatre Camp (Ages 8-14) The curtain is going up on a week filled with the excitement and magic of theatre! Do you dream of standing in the spotlight on opening night, of seeing yourself on television or in the movies, of hearing the applause of an audience? Share your dreams with other children just like you who love theatre and the performing arts! At Georgia College’s Theatre Camp, performers of all levels – beginner through advanced – find expression and fulfillment on stage! But, as you already know, there is a lot more to putting on a show than acting. You will spend time making your own costumes and designing and creating your own props (all materials are provided!). You will be totally immersed in theatre – plus you’ll have all of the fun of a great summer camp. Recreation and pool time are added bonuses in the afternoons. Snacks will be provided but you must bring your own “brown bag” lunch each day, as well as a digital camera if you have one. There will be a free culminating performance of the show on Friday, and you will perform because everyone is cast in the show! for Middle and High School Students Come discover art at Georgia College, Georgia’s Public Liberal Arts University, through your choice of mediums! New for 2013, middle and high school students can experience various art styles led by professional artists. After a morning full of art discovery, you’ll have the option to stay and enjoy your afternoon on Georgia College’s incredible campus with camp counselors supervising you in a variety of fun events. Bring your own lunch and hang out with friends while swimming at the pool, checking out the computer lab and participating in great outdoor recreational activities, such as Ultimate Frisbee and campus scavenger hunts. Bring your water bottle and sunscreen, and we’ll provide a great afternoon snack before saying goodbye at 5 p.m.

Sculpting and Cartooning

Digital Photography

Are you ready to take your doodles to the next level with cartooning? Do you want to sink your hands into some real mud and come out with a sculpture to impress your friends and family? If so, join us in this fun, hands-on camp where we’ll look at the different types of cartooning and a little history of this art in both professional and student examples. After exploring basic shapes, blending and shading colors, you’ll begin creating your very own cartoons. Individual projects will focus on completing a single funny cartoon or a multiple comic book panel. Afterwards, you'll use air dried clay to discover the art of sculpting. Each day, step-by-step instruction from a professional will guide you through the process of creating individualized finished pieces. End your week by displaying your work for friends, family and community in an open art gallery. The registration fee includes the cost of supplies.

Are you tired or frustrated because everyone else’s photos on Facebook look better than yours? It doesn’t have to be that way! This summer, make the most of every moment by learning to take the best shots possible – and how to edit shots that aren’t the best to make them so much better. Photography is a great skill to learn and can make a huge difference in everything from social networking, to gift giving and memory making. Through these halfday camps, discover different ways to compose your pictures so that you draw attention to your subject, as well as how to edit your images after capturing them. Gain inspiration by critiquing other artists’ work and explore historic Milledgeville as we take photo walks through the beautiful Georgia College campus. End the week by displaying your work for friends, family and community in an open art gallery. You will need to bring your digital camera with you every day.

As an added bonus for high school students, you will begin this course by exploring some of the greatest fine art photographers who will inspire you with their creativity and innovation. Next, you will learn essential camera functions, including how to manually use your camera, basics of aperture, depth of field and shutter speeds and controlling motion. You will also have more in depth critique time, aiding you in gaining better control of composition and exposures. In order to be able to accomplish these more advanced concepts, you will be required to have a digital camera with a manual setting.

Summer Camps

What is ALPHA Extreme you ask? ALPHA (Advanced Learning Programs for High Achievers) Extreme at Georgia College is a new summer intensive that offers 6th-9th grade students the opportunity to participate in academically challenging programs at one of Georgia's most well recognized colleges! The weekly intensives are designed to offer exciting curricula, fun activities and field trips with learning that goes beyond any classroom.

The registration fee for each of the programs is based on the instruction and supplies needed to complete projects assigned during the course of the week including nightly housing, field trips, planned group activities as well as all meals, beginning with dinner on the first day of the program and concluding with breakfast on the final day. So, we hope you'll take advantage of this special invitation and apply for one of the programs today. Registration and Acceptance In order to be considered for acceptance into the program, all students must submit to the Department of Continuing Education an application packet and a letter of recommendation from a current teacher. There are three ways to access the application: online at continuingeducation.gcsu.edu, by calling Continuing Education at 478-445-5277 or by visiting Chappell Hall, Room 100, on the main campus of Georgia College. Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you will be contacted via email to begin the registration process.

ALPHA Extreme Engineering Robotics Adventure Begin camp exploring advanced LEGO Mindstorms NXT concepts such as multisensor input, data wiring, and advanced building skills. After a quick overview of concepts, you move onto fun robotics challenges. Robots battle in a sumo contest. Can you outwit or out maneuver your opponent? Will your team build the best robot to traverse a canyon? Whose robot is fastest in a race to the finish line? Will you be a master builder or programmer? Throughout the week, you will battle in team building exercises to test your engineering talents. Which team’s bridge will be the longest and strongest? Who will win the tug of war contest? ALPHA Extreme Media Media Storytelling Explore the exciting 24/7 media landscape with ALPHA Extreme Media Storytelling as you get an in-depth examination of the various platforms in today’s media. From the Web to newspapers, television to YouTube, media is constantly evolving. During ALPHA Extreme Media Storytelling, you will explore numerous ways of telling a story in today’s media. Summer Dance Classes Have you ever dreamed of being a ballerina or simply wanted to learn a fun form of social dance? Our summer dance program begins July 8 and ends July 25 and provides a wonderful opportunity for new students to join our dance program or for returning students to refine their skills. Summer classes are taught by Mrs. Amelia Pelton. All classes will be held in the Miller Dance Studio. A signed waiver of liability is required. The fee for each three week course is $35. Belly Dance You know it's something you've always wanted to do and now's your chance! Sign up today for this exciting course designed to teach you the basics of belly dancing. In addition to learning the fundamental movements, proper posture and a short choreography, you'll also have the added benefits of increasing your flexibility, improving your strength, building your core muscles and enhancing your leg strength. Fall Dance Program The Department of Theatre and Dance offers a complete program of dance instruction for children and adults throughout the year. This is an ongoing dance program which meets on a monthly basis, culminating in the 17th annual performances of The Nutcracker on Dec. 13, 14 and 15. The program is directed by Amelia Pelton, who holds both B.F.A. and M.F.A. degrees in dance. Other instructors are Georgia College graduates and dance minor students Jessica Gore, Corinne Przedpelski, Morgan Henry, Jenna Allenson and Gabby DePhillips. Designed especially for children ages 4 through 11 – but with parents in mind (parents, keep reading and you’ll see why!) – Creative Kids’ University is an exciting Saturday night activity that will bring the creativity out in your child! On the second Saturday of each month, Chappell Hall will become a children’s paradise featuring age appropriate activities, including dance, recreation, karaoke, cooking and other exciting activities. And parents, we have not forgotten you. Creative Kids’ University is held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, allowing you a free night to run errands, a date night or simply a quiet evening to yourself. Summer The Joy of Music Music Camps

It’s time to put a smile on your face and a song in your heart through the Joy of Music! Dust off those piano keys, rescue your old guitar from the attic or get ready to strengthen your vocals. You’re never too young – or to old – to take private lessons. Ability level does not matter; you will be amazed at how much you improve in just a few weeks. Bring your own instrument (except piano students!). Your instructor will advise which training materials to use, based on your personal learning style. Students will have the opportunity to perform in the Fall Recital on November 22.

Our philosophy is simple: playing music is FUN – especially when shared with close friends in a beautiful, safe place. The GC Band Camps are unique and exciting opportunities for middle and high school students to further develop their musical skill, while also showcasing their creative sides. The student/teacher ratios are excellent and camp instruction is delivered by GC faculty, jazz professionals and guest artists. In addition to the music classes and rehearsals, we also offer recreation and special events including movies, pizza parties, talent shows and swimming. Join campers from around the Southeast for one or more of these musically intensive camps. New in 2013, you can earn 10 percent off your GC Summer Music Camp tuition. Just recruit three of your classmates from your school to receive your discount. The following rules will apply: • The four students must be from the same school. • The four students must attend the same week of camp. • The four students need to be registered and have paid their $100 deposit by the registration deadline (this discount does not apply to late registrants). • The discount will be applied to your final payment.

The Pharmacy Technician Online Certification Training Program was developed in response to a rising need for trained technicians to work in hospital or retail pharmacies. With this growing opportunity, however, has also come increased responsibility, and this increased responsibility has made certification an important issue for many industry employers and some state legislatures. This program will prepare you for entry-level pharmacy technician positions by teaching you medical and pharmaceutical terminology, basic anatomy related to the pharmacology of medications and pharmaceutical calculations. The Pharmacy Technician Program will give you hands-on practice in retail pharmacy procedures through an online lab module. You'll learn what information is necessary to process prescriptions and physician orders and apply that knowledge to fill mock prescriptions. The curriculum also includes the ethics of pharmacy practice and education about prescription medications, patient care and interaction and charges and reimbursement. The medical industry is experiencing a tremendous demand for individuals with knowledge of medical office operations, which includes diagnostic and procedural coding and insurance forms processing. According to the American Medical Association, there are more than 1.2 million Medical Billers and Coders in the United States, making this one of the fastest growing professions in allied health. The medical terminology portion of the program introduces elements of medical terminology, such as the etymology of words used to describe the human body. This policy helps us eliminate last-minute course cancellations and overcrowded classes. ADMISSION: Admission to courses is open to anyone. Interest and desire to learn are the requirements. There are no educational prerequisites for most courses, and applicants are not required to send high school transcripts or take the college entrance exam to participate. Certificate or professional programs may require certain professional competency for entrance. ENROLLMENT: Enrollment in all classes will be limited to a manageable number; therefore, early registration is desirable. When payments for a course exceed the number who can enroll, applicants will be placed on a waiting list in the order they are received. CANCELED COURSES: The university reserves the right to cancel any program because of insufficient enrollment or for other administrative reasons. Should a situation develop which necessitates cancellation, a full fee refund will be made. WITHDRAWALS AND REFUNDS: A student who, for any reason, finds it impossible to attend a course for which registered may receive a full refund if the Department of Continuing Education is informed of the withdrawal by 4:45 p.m. the day prior to the initial class meeting. (A longer notice is required for Kids’ University, music lessons, real estate courses and select other programs as noted in course descriptions). Notification of withdrawal and a request for refund should be made in writing to Continuing Education or by coming by in person to 100 Chappell Hall one working day prior to class start. Notifying the instructor does not constitute withdrawal. In designated courses requiring a text and/or other materials as a part of the registration fee, the text/materials fee is nonrefundable after the registration deadline. CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS: The University System of Georgia has established the use of the Continuing Education Unit (CEU) as a measuring device for non-credit programs offered by System institutions. The Department of Continuing Education administers the implementation of the CEU. The CEU is defined as follows: ”One Continuing Education Unit is ten contact hours of participation in an organized continuing education experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction.” The CEU attests to an individual’s effort to continue learning regardless of age or previous educational accomplishments. Generally, Continuing Education Units are awarded only for programs that are oriented toward occupational skills and knowledge or significant social issues. CEUs are accumulated for each student on a permanent transcript which may be obtained from the Department of Continuing Education. The CEU is not transferable for academic credit. LIABILITY: Before participating in the first session of any physical activity course, the Board of Regents requires that a waiver of liability be signed by the adult enrolled in the course or by the parent of any child under 18 years of age.

First Aid

CPR/AED Certification for Adults, Children and Infants CPR is an emergency procedure used to revive an adult, child or infant who has stopped breathing and/or whose heart isn’t beating. Such incidences can occur following drownings, heart attacks or strokes, severe allergic reactions and electrocutions, or may be due to Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).

Accidents happen and the information and skills you learn in this course can be used anywhere! You will learn to recognize and care for victims of life-threatening emergencies and sudden illnesses or injuries. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive the American Red Cross First Aid certification card which is good for three years. This course meets OSHA requirements and is accredited by The American Red Cross. A text is included in the cost. You must be at least 15 years old to take this course. SCA is caused by problems with the heart's electrical system causing irregular heartbeats resulting in the heart stopping. If SCA is the emergency, once CPR has been performed and the heart is beating again, the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can restore a normal beat to a heart. These portable AED devices are often found in public places, such as shopping malls, golf courses, businesses, airports, airplanes, casinos, convention centers, hotels, sports venues and schools. This OSHA approved Red Cross course gives you, wherever you are, the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and care for such injuries and sudden illnesses. Instruction includes Adult, Child and Infant CPR and AED training. Upon successful completion, you will receive a 2-year certification from the American Red Cross. Beginning Cake Decorating Surprise your family and friends and decorate your own special cakes this year! Start with the basics including techniques for icing a cake, various borders, dots, stars, lattice work, basket weaving and some easy flowers and roses. While you collect valuable ideas to help in your baking and decorating, you can be decorating a fancy cake for someone special (like yourself) or just for fun. Floral Arrangements Join Master Gardener Earnest Yearwood and learn to make your own floral arrangements for your home or as gifts for friends. More than 43,000 people lose their lives in motor vehicle crashes each year, and over two million more suffer disabling injuries, according to the National Safety Council. Georgia College is proud to be your partner in striving to prevent automobile accidents. In addition, you can save money on your insurance (or, parents can save money on your teenager’s insurance!) by successfully completing this National Safety Council Defensive Driving course. Georgia Senate Bill 433 requires insurance companies in Georgia to give families with good driving experience a 10% discount on portions of their insurance upon completion of this course. Are you interested in learning to play golf, but a little scared of the large group sizes? Or, maybe you want to play better golf but can’t commit to a structured schedule? For beginners, personal one-on-one instruction will teach you correct grip, posture, alignment and swing fundamentals. For others, personalized attention allows the instructor to help you in particular areas so you can better your game. All sessions will be scheduled by you and the instructor and will be held at Little Fishing Creek Golf Course. Students must be at least 8 years of age.

Designed especially for beginners, this course is ideal for those women who want to focus on the key ingredients of a successful golf swing. You don’t even have to get on the floor! Yoga is not for just the young, hip and flexible. Many yoga techniques can be adapted for any age group or fitness level and we have done this to fit the needs of you! You’re probably wondering why should you try a new form of exercise, one about which you know very little? Many other forms of exercise such as weight lifting, jogging and even walking are rough on your joints and can cause pain and arthritis to flare up. Yoga is gentle, fights common ailments, reduces joint stiffness and pain and improves flexibility, strength and balance. Yoga focuses on your whole body and spirit. You will get a complete workout and experience feelings of relaxation and peace. With its slow, rhythmic stretching and flexing, yoga is ideal for seniors who want to improve their overall health. Yoga is also a new social adventure. You'll likely learn a ton of new things and meet a fun group of people who like the same things you do. So wear comfortable clothes, grab a friend and come on over and try it. We bet you’re going to love it!

This is an on-going course where you will learn the basics of physical yoga techniques and then continue with more advanced techniques. Yoga for Health is appropriate for all ages and focuses on stretching, gaining flexibility and learning relaxation techniques. Wear comfortable clothes, and bring a large towel or padded mat. A signed waiver of liability is required.
