Letter from the President C O N T E N T S
It is turning out to be another great year for Georgia College! nce again, we have been nationally recognized by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance as a “Top 100 Value” among public universities in the United States. And we have continued to attract some of the brightest students in the state. Our current group of freshmen has the highest SAT scores we have recorded, and we’re now forced to turn away almost half of the qualified high school seniors who apply for admission. Despite our growing popularity, we are committed to capping enrollment in order to preserve the more intimate learning experience we provide to our students.
O
Our success has now put us in the top ranks of public universities. But, as always, we know we can be even better. And so, a big part of my job – and one of the most enjoyable — is to find new and exciting ways to meet our mission as the state’s designated “Public Liberal Arts University.” As you will read in this issue of Connection, one of the ways we are meeting this challenge is to identify “Pillars of Distinction” that exemplify why Georgia College is so very special. In addition to providing us with the opportunity to enhance our reputation, they also allow us to focus on making meaningful improvements that truly make a difference in the academic experience we offer. One of these improvements is to build on the “out of classroom” experiences that are available to our students. These include such things as expanded opportunities to study abroad, community service projects, internships, mentoring programs, and participation in faculty-led research projects.

Of course, to be successful these programs will require new levels of resources — tuition and state revenue are never sufficient to support the unique programs that take Georgia College beyond the ordinary. This is why your support is so critical — and so appreciated. With your help, Georgia College can continue its rise as one of the finest liberal arts universities in the nation. And that is something of which we all can be proud. Sincerely,

Thunder He dances. He prances. He cheers. He jeers. And he rallies the crowds.
Bell Hall green space completed
You’ve seen him. He’s Thunder — the new Georgia College & State University bobcat mascot. He’s become an instant icon to Georgia College athletics and a hit with fans. Thunder is the new staple at all GCSU sports and student activities and the brainchild of The Thundercats, a GCSU student spirit group. Jason Hendrix, vice president and mascot chairman of the Thundercats, says that Thunder’s arrival on campus is a “good start to building a tradition.” “It gives GCSU not just a representative on paper but an easily recognized ambassador to the community and university,” Hendrix said. The Thundercats, who visit every GCSU athletic home game, began to realize that most schools that compete with GCSU had mascots. And after Hendrix won a trip to the NCAA Final Four, it became painfully obvious to him that GCSU needed a mascot. When he returned to Milledgeville, Hendrix and The Thundercats began researching other schools mascots and pieced together the idea of “Thunder,” the GCSU Bobcat. Thunder was 10 months in the making. “We tried to get sponsorships to pay for the costume, but it didn’t pan out,” Hendrix said. “So, through collaboration with the GCSU Student Government Association, we created the Student Allotment Budget Committee. We collected dollars, pennies, rooted through couches, and finally we had enough money to get Thunder.” At 7 feet tall, Thunder is the largest bobcat in the southeast and definitely the most spirited. His biography on The Thundercats website says he is always on the prowl and “serves as an intregal part” of the community programs of Georgia College & State University athletics. He makes appearances at local schools, hospitals and charity events throughout Milledgeville and the surrounding community. “When taking time out for himself, the big green bobcat enjoys dancing, playing and exploring downtown Milledgeville and lies back at home watching ESPN,” the website states.

he newly paved sidewalks east of Bell Hall complete the circle of Georgia College’s main campus. Now students can reach any building around the main campus without leaving the encircling sidewalk. The six-month project meets Georgia College’s master plan guidelines by improving pedestrian safety, enhancing campus landscaping, providing linkage to academic buildings and increasing ADA accessibility. “This project completes the campus master plan for landscaping and accessibility for the main campus,” said GCSU facilities planner John Webb. The work transformed a former parking lot into green space, helped with drainage, provided patio space for Max Noah Recital Hall, loading and unloading areas for Por ter and Bell halls and handicap accessibility, Webb said. “Now someone in a wheelchair can travel all the way around the main campus without barriers,” Webb said. A bricked amphitheater built into the green space between Bell Hall and a new parking area provides outside classroom space and a staging area for events. Faculty and staff use the adjacent parking spaces. Additionally, the openness and two additional blue boxes for emergencies help ensure safety for students, faculty and staff. “This is the last corner on the main campus to be landscaped,” Webb said. “It’s finished but will take a year or two to grow in.”

Georgia College License Plate! hanks to a special arrangement with the Georgia College & State University Alumni Association and the state, you can now order your ver y own Georgia College license plate. The cost is just $25 and will be issued to you with your 2009 vehicle registration. “We’re excited that our alumni, students, parents, faculty and staf f will soon be able to show their pride in Georgia College wherever they drive,” said Amy S. Nitsche, Vice President for External Relations and University Advancement. To ensure production of the new Georgia College tag, the GCSU Alumni Association has agreed to underwrite the project, which requires a minimum of 500 plates to be ordered. To help promote sales of the new plate, the university’s Student Government Association has begun a sales campaign to reach out to current students and their parents. “We’re glad to be playing a big part in getting the word out about the new plate,” said SGA President Ryan Greene. “It’s a great way for all of us to show our suppor t for this great school.” To make ordering the new plate easy, instructions and the required form (MV-9C) are available on the university’s website at www.gcsu.edu/tag. The completed form should then be sent to the Georgia College Advancement Office for processing. Those who order the new plates will automatically receive them with their vehicle registrations next year.

New Dean for the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences enneth Procter, Dean of the College of Fine Arts at University of Montevallo in Alabama, will assume his new role of Dean for the School of Liberal Ar ts & Sciences at Geor gia College on July 1. “After a well conducted search, I am pleased to inform the GCSU community that we have hired Kenneth Procter as the new dean for the School of Liberal Arts & Sciences,” said Dr. Anne Gormly, Vice President & Dean of Faculties. “Dean Proctor’s experience as both a faculty member and an academic administrator at a Council on Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC) school will be an asset to the growth and enhancement of the School.” Georgia College’s mission as the state’s public liberal arts university is the incentive that brings Procter to the university, he said. “Having developed my career at The University of Montevallo, a sister COPLAC institution, I am an ardent advocate for the values inherent in a liberal arts education,” Procter said. “From all that I have seen, read, and heard, from faculty, administration, and students, Georgia College lives its mission.” And the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences is at the very core of this mission, Procter said. “I look forward to working with the faculty and staff to provide our students the kind of engaging and probing education they expect from Georgia College, and to make our school the ver y best it can be. I expect plenty of challenges ahead, but I have already received many of fers of help, and that, I think, speaks to the graciousness and generosity of the university community. I look forward to joining Georgia College.” Procter earned his MFA in Studio Ar t from University of Nor th Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is an active painter and artist and teaches studio art, art history and art appreciation. He currently chairs the General Education Committee at Montevallo. Prior to becoming Dean of the College of Fine Arts, he ser ved as the art department chair for seven years and as director of the Honors Program. “I was par ticularly pleased and proud of the work of the search committee lead by Dr. Martin Lammon and assisted by search consultant Steve Leo,” Gormly said. “We attracted a rich pool of candidates and that reflects well on our faculty, school and Georgia College.”

Pillars of Distinction During the past two years, Georgia College & State University has been developing “Pillars of Distinction” to highlight the unique role the university plays in liberal arts education. Connection magazine interviewed GCSU President Dorothy Leland to learn more about these pillars and how they influence the mission of Georgia College.
Connection: You’ve been guiding the development of the “Pillars of Distinction.” Tell us a little about the concept and how you see it advancing the university’s mission. President Leland: The “Pillars of Distinction” will allow us to highlight features of the educational experience at Georgia College that have the potential for national recognition as exemplary. I like to think of these pillars as something that, with appropriate focus and investment, will help to elevate the profile of Georgia College as one of our nation’s very best public liberal arts universities. This will position us to better compete for students and resources—and that’s a good thing! Connection: What has the process been for developing these pillars? President Leland: It has included a number of work groups consisting of both faculty and staff who conducted surveys and research to help determine our strengths and how best to promote them. The proposals they developed were brought before campus-wide stakeholder conferences where they were used to generate more ideas and to get good solid feedback. Our goal was to identify “Pillars of Distinction” that not only resonated with our educational values and with our students, faculty, and staff — but also with our external audiences. We wanted to develop pillars that say “this is something you’ll find exciting about what we do here at Georgia College.” Connection: Tell us briefly about pillars that have been identified and why they have been chosen. President Leland: We first focused on the Georgia College undergraduate learning experience – the experience that all of our students par ticipate in regardless of their major. We’ve identified two pillars with respect to this experience that we think exemplify what Georgia College is all about. The first pillar is called “learning beyond the classroom.” It is about providing students with opportunities for connecting their

classroom learning with real-world experience, action and application. We know that powerful learning occurs at the intersections of theory and practice, knowledge and application, and first-hand involvement in processes of discovery and creation. At Georgia College, the opportunities to make these connections are provided through a variety of means. They include field-based experiences, study abroad, internships, mentoring programs, participation in facultyled research projects, creative projects, and service-learning. Under this pillar we’ll enhance the things we already do and add components that allow us to do it in a more concentrated way. It will provide us with a method to ensure that all our students have exposure to meaningful learning beyond the classroom opportunities. Connection: And, I assume this will make a degree from Georgia College more valuable in the marketplace? President Leland: Exactly. Graduates of Georgia College will leave with both a rich classroom-based educational experience, as well as a rich out-of-classroom experience, and that will show up on their transcripts in some sort of way. What we’ve learned is that employers find that very attractive – they embrace the concept of graduates who have benefited from real-world experience and application in their fields of study. Connection: You mentioned that two pillars have been identified. What is the second? President Leland: The second is related to the first — it is an extension of learning beyond the classroom by bringing it into our residential facilities.

As Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university, the mission of Georgia College is to provide its undergraduate students with a residential learning environment that’s comparable to exemplary private liberal arts colleges — but at a public university price. In the private higher education sector, residence-based communities have long been used to give a personal character to each student’s experience. Most often, the communities are designed to provide students with the academic and social resources of a larger institution while preserving the collegiality and intimacy that’s characteristic of smaller college communities. Thanks to financing through the GCSU Foundation, Georgia College enjoys the finest residential facilities in the state. Our goal now is to transform our residence halls and apar tments into college “houses” — we think that is a better name for the on-campus places where our students live and learn — that connect students with faculty and each other in meaningful ways.
C O V E R
S T O R Y
Each college house will have a faculty house leader who is responsible for getting really creative about bringing new and exciting out-of-class learning experiences into these residential communities. In addition, these faculty leaders will advise and mentor the students. And they will work to create an environment that’s not just a place where students live, but one that also connects them intellectually with each other — and with the larger campus community as a whole. Connection: How do you envision the kind of environments that might be created? President Leland: The house faculty leader might have a series of fireside chats throughout the semester where various guests are brought in to discuss different topics of interest. It might include screening films and then hosting a discussion on it. Or it might involve field trips. It will be up to the students and the faculty house leader to decide what programs will enhance and build upon their academic experience. This college house system also will increase opportunities for student leadership. Each house will have a student council that will be responsible for establishing and sustaining its unique traditions. I expect this eventually will lead to healthy competition among the houses — competitions that might involve intramural teams, debate competitions, and so forth. The students themselves will come up with the best ideas — not me! Each house will have its own banner, colors and slogan. This will provide a unique identity for the members of each house. When Georgia College was a women’s college, it had some powerful traditions — such as the Golden Slipper, which featured a singing, dancing, and acting competition between the freshmen class and the sophomore class. It was a tradition that alumni shared across classes and even generations. We hope that one day our students will also share in equally power ful traditions that are centered in the college house system. Connection: Anything else we should know? President Leland: Our academic schools also participated in a process of identifying academic program pillars of distinction and we’ve seen some exciting results. It will allow us to help more and more people understand the quality of education that happens here — and that’s exciting!

Georgia College Completes Purchase of Historic Campus Theatre Project to Include Performance Theatre and Retail Bookstore eorgia College has completed the purchase of the historic Campus Theatre on Hancock Street in downtown Milledgeville. The university plans to restore the exterior of the Art Deco building to its original condition and adapt the interior into a per formance theatre and retail bookstore. The theatre, a prominent par t of the city’s downtown area, was built in 1935 and closed in 1983. “This purchase marks the next step in the re-birth of this beautiful building with its addition to the campus of Georgia College & State University,” said Georgia College President Dorothy Leland. “Our plan is to not only bring the historic Campus Theatre to life again, but to reutilize its space in a way that plays a significant role in the continued redevelopment of downtown Milledgeville.” When the project is completed, the façade, marquee, doorways, ticket booth and other exterior features will be restored to their original splendor as they appeared in 1935 when the building was constructed. The project will restore and preserve the building’s exterior and readapt the interior to include space for the university’s theatre ar ts program. The interior will include a “black box” per formance space designed to accommodate a variety of configurations, depending on the type of programs being presented. The building also is slated to house a bookstore that features a variety of general selections in addition to textbooks, providing the downtown area with a valuable new retail venue. Work is expected to begin later this year, with an anticipated opening in the summer of 2009. “We look forward to bringing the Campus Theatre back as the centerpiece of the downtown area,” President Leland said.

Nursing Theatre By Judy Bailey The setting: a temporary nursing lab at Central State Hospital. The characters: Georgia College theatre majors and Georgia College nursing students The plot: Theatre students play real-life acting roles for experience and the nursing students test their assessment and examination skills for a class grade. The directors: Georgia College first-year theatre instructor Amy Pinney and Georgia College first-year nursing instructor Susan Steele. When the curtain opens for Act I, actor Maria Victoria-Perez arrives at the clinic complaining of pain in her shoulder. Perez winces in pain as the nurse evaluates and examines her shoulder. The nurse asks Perez about her medical histor y and questions her about possible activities that could have led to an injury. Perez’s per formance leads to the nurse’s diagnosis of a pulled muscle in the right shoulder. Similar scenes play throughout the day as acting students portray their injury roles and instructors evaluate each of their nursing students’ skills examining patients and assessing their problems. The first-time collaborative performance was a big hit for both theatre majors and nursing students.
“This was one of my favorite acting experiences,” Perez said. “Acting sick is hard both on and off stage. What made this harder was that my audience was no longer in chairs looking at me from the house of a theatre, but completely in my space and interacting with me.” The experience was extremely helpful to first-semester nursing student Leigh Ann Stephens. “We had been learning the skills throughout the semester, and it helped put everything together. Also, it wasn’t like a real exam,” Stephen said. “We had no idea which scenario we would get so we had to be prepared for anything. We had to know what questions to ask and which assessment to do.” Nursing instructor Susan Steele launched the idea to join forces with theatre instructor Amy Pinney during new faculty orientation last fall. “Amy seemed enthusiastic, and I thought we could team up for this project,” Steele said. The two instructors maintained contact throughout the fall semester in preparation for the theatre majors’ acting roles and the nursing students’ exam. Six acting students volunteered their time to play two roles each to test more than 40 nursing students.

Testing for a grade, the nursing students were unaware of their patients’ problems until they entered the exam room. “Susan prepared the scripts for the theatre students based on the needs to evaluate the nursing students,” Pinney said. “And I prepared the students.” Actors portrayed patients with bellyaches, trouble breathing, head injuries, wounds and traumas complete with makeup. And nursing students used their newly-acquired skills to access, evaluate and examine each of the actors to diagnose the problems. “We tried to give them a realistic situation to make it easier for them to transition into the real world,” Steele said. “They did great and rose to the occasion. The students all took this seriously.” The results: A true-to-life examination experience for the nursing students, an unusual acting experience for the theatre majors and a rewarding partnership for two first-year instructors. “We discovered two rookies can make a great partnership,” Steele said. Previously, nursing students used each other as patients for the assessment/examination testing. “It is important to get away from your classmates who can

occasionally ‘help you out’ if you don’t know an answer that the instructor asks,” said first semester nursing student Emily Walsh. “And it is extremely beneficial to work with strangers to develop your people skills, and nurses need to possess amazing people skills.” The role-playing also helped nursing students prepare for upcoming clinical experiences, Stephens said. “I think that it will help me in the clinical setting because in a way it put me in a nurse’s mindset,” the first-semester nursing student said. “It also helped me get more comfortable asking questions and performing assessments that I think should be done and not just the ones that I am currently learning,” The theatre majors gained a marketable skill portraying the roles of ill patients, Pinney said. “It’s happening more and more in the medical community,” said Pinney, who previously worked as an actor in a similiar scenario. “And medical institutions are willing to pay good money to hire actors to role-play an illness for a more real-life situation for medical students.” The acting gig assisted theatre major Perez with her studies, she said. “It helped me feel comfortable with the art of improvisation,” she said. “It also helped me as an actress to think of a time when maybe I did feel a pain like the one I was supposed to express.” The collaborative effort between nursing and theatre drives home Georgia College’s liberal arts mission as well. Steele, a liberal arts graduate with 30 years nursing experience, came to Georgia College to teach because she knows the value of a liberal arts mission. “The mission offers an environment that grows the whole student, even in applied science programs,” Steele said. The joint activity allowed two totally different majors to work together to educate each other, Perez said. “We are being active in each other’s education, and you can’t ask for more,” Perez said. “We are doing our part for each other. It is interesting to meet people who have just as much passion for their discipline as you do for yours.”

Coaching Changes for GCSU Baseball he Georgia College & State University baseball coaching staff went through some changes during the fall, with one familiar face getting a promotion. Three-year head coach Chris Calciano left at the end of October to begin his new position as regional scout for Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox. Calciano was 132-48 at GCSU, picking up the school’s first two Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Championships. A member of the staff as an assistant for both of those PBC titles, Tom Carty will assume interim head coaching duties for the 2008 season, with strong consideration for the open position. Carty was Bobcat pitching coach for the past two seasons, two of the best in school history. The Bobcats had a 2.82 ERA in 2006, the best team mark for a GCSU squad, followed by a 3.53 in 2007, good for sixth. The strikeouts totals—437 in 2006 and 408 in 2007—also rank third and ninth, respectively. Joining the staff this season is Zeke Mitchem as assistant coach. A native of Missouri, Mitchem has worked internationally in baseball since 2005. He most recently served as head coach of the Solingen Alligators Baseball Club in Germany and has been an assistant coach for the German Senior National Team since 2005. He also was head coach of the Northern Districts Baseball Club in Australia in 2006 and the Mainz Athletics Baseball Club in Germany from 2005-06. Mitchem’s expertise lies in infield defense and offensive game management, complimenting Car ty’s coaching experience well as the two worked together on the Marshall University coaching staff from 2003-04. He will also serve as third base coach when the Bobcats are at bat. Josh McDonald returns for his second season as graduate assistant coach, working with hitters and outfield defense.

memoriam In Memoriam
Dr. Mary Rose Baugh Bacon
Weylene Edwards Bucklin
Dr. Mary Rose Baugh Bacon, a long time educator and benefactor of Georgia College, passed away on July 25, 2007 at her home. She was 71. Dr. Baugh was a native of Emanuel County, Georgia, where she attended Emanuel County Institute (Class of ‘53). She was a graduate of Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and the University of Georgia. In 1957, she was among the first women from the State of Georgia to accept a reserve commission in the U.S. Air Force, serving on active duty from 1957 until 1960. She traveled extensively around the world in the U. S. Air Force, eventually earning the rank of captain. Dr. Bacon was married to the late Marvin H. Baugh for 34 years and had been a resident of Baldwin County since 1967. Her surviving husband, Colonel Franklin C. Bacon, of Milledgeville, established the Mary Rose Turner Baugh Bacon Scholarship in her honor. She earned a master of education degree in counseling at University of Maryland, and started teaching at Georgia College in 1969. She later earned a PhD in counseling and student personnel services from University of Georgia in 1978. During her tenure at Georgia College, Dr. Bacon helped educate teachers and nurses for 36 years. She remained active in teacher education until 2007. She was recognized nationally as a pioneer in the development for freshman year curriculum and is well known for her role in childhood teacher education across the state. In 1989, she was given the GCSU Honorary Alumnus Award. Dr. Bacon was also active in many community and non-profit organizations, including serving as chairperson of the Wesley Foundation Board, as a board member of First United Methodist Church, and president of the Milledgeville Music Club. She is buried in Memory Hill Cemetery in Milledgeville.
Weylene Edwards Bucklin, an alumnus for whom an endowed scholarship in theatre is named, passed away on July 7, 2007 after an extended struggle with a rare neurological illness. Mrs. Bucklin was born in her maternal grandparent’s farmhouse in Putnam County in February of 1929. Her parents, Alma Rosser and Weyler Samuel Edwards, subsequently moved to Milledgeville. Weylene entered Georgia State College for Women, now GCSU, in 1945 to pursue an English and Speech major. In 1949, fellow students elected her to Who’s Who in Colleges and Universities for her thespian activities. With youthful good looks and an engaging smile, she earned rave reviews in such plays as “Antigone,” “Life With Father,” and “When our Hearts were Young and Gay.” Following graduation Mrs. Bucklin managed the YWCA at GSCW and taught in primary and high schools in nearby communities. She completed a master’s degree in Speech at the University of Wisconsin, and subsequently taught speech and English at the University of Colorado at Boulder. There she met her husband, who had taken a similar position. With many shared interests, including travel, literature, art, and academia, they married in 1956. In 1960, she and her family moved to Berkeley, California. There, she turned her interests to raising their two children, settling into their new community, furthering her husband’s teaching career at UC Berkeley, and reopening her interests in travel. Weylene’s passion for travel never waned and she spent a lifetime traveling around the world. Dr. and Mrs. Bucklin established the Weylene E. Bucklin Endowed Scholarship for students majoring in theatre.

Margaret Anne Barnes
Virginia Tumlin
Margaret Anne Barnes, a graduate of the class of 1948 who won fame as the author of “Murder in Coweta County,” died Oct. 12, 2007, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. “Murder in Coweta County” recounted the true story of the 1948 murder of William Turner, a farmhand, by prominent Meriwether County landowner John Wallace, who was later executed for the crime. Barnes was born on July 24, 1927, in Newnan, where she grew up. She attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, now Georgia College & State University, where one of her fellow students was Flannery O’Connor. Barnes also attended the University of Georgia where she studied journalism. Barnes was working as city editor at The Newnan Times, predecessor of The Times-Herald, when the Wallace trial took place. She knew many of the figures in the story, and it led her to write “Murder In Coweta County,” which received the Edgar Allen Poe Special Award. “Margaret Anne Barnes did for Coweta County what Margaret Mitchell did for Atlanta,” said Spencer Ragsdale, former editor of the De Kalb News-Sun, after publication of “Murder in Coweta County. Her final book, “The Tragedy and the Triumph of Phenix City, Alabama,” was published in 1999. That book chronicled the role of organized crime in that community in the years leading up to the 1954 assassination of Alabama’s attorney general-elect, Albert Patterson. Her literary work was recognized in 1984 by the Georgia Legislature, which acknowledged her achievements with a resolution. Survivors include her sons, David Jefferson Dukes and Steven Stewart Dukes, a granddaughter, Jennifer Ashley Dukes, a brother, William Young Barnes III, and a sister, Mary Clare Medlin.
Virginia Horne Tumlin, a remarkable individual who returned to Georgia College to complete her degree 65 years after she first attended classes, passed away on July 13, 2007. She was 88. In addition to serving many years as an educator, she devoted her life to serving her family, friends, community and church. With her son and daughter, she also established the Virginia Horne Tumlin Endowed Scholarship for students majoring in education at GCSU. Mrs. Tumlin graduated from Miller High School in Macon before attending what is now Georgia College & State University from 1937 to 1941. She left college in the midst of World War II, just shy of earning enough credits to graduate. She moved to Marietta, Georgia, where she married and began teaching. Sixty-five years later, in 2007, she completed her degree and the university awarded her a Bachelor of Science in education. Mrs. Tumlin was the wife of late Marietta businessman Steve Tumlin Sr., who owned Marietta Lumber Company and helped to found the Marietta Commercial Bank, where he served for many years as chairman of the board. Mrs. Tumlin was dedicated to her family, community and the First United Methodist Church. She valued community and led a number of civic organizations. She was president of several Parent Teacher Associations in the Marietta City Schools that her two children attended. She was also a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, founder and president of Marietta-Cobb Beautification, and the longtime president of the Honeysuckle Garden Club. In 1971, Mrs. Tumlin became the first woman to earn the Cobb Citizen of the Year Award presented by the Marietta Daily Journal. She also received the prestigious Liberty Bell Award from the Cobb County Bar Association. Survivors include her son, state Rep. Steve “Thunder” Tumlin, Jr. (RMarietta), her daughter Harriet Tumlin Jobson of Knoxville, TN, a sister, Julia H. Adams of Cleveland, TN, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

New Scholarship Endowments Established The Mary Rose Turner Baugh Bacon Scholarship
The Wellington Study Abroad Scholarship
Established by COL Frank Bacon, Sr. in honor of his wife, Dr. Rose Baugh Bacon, this scholarship provides an oppor tunity for non-traditional students in the School of Education.
Established by an anonymous donor, the Wellington Study Abroad Endowed Scholarship was established in memory of the donor’s mother who briefly attended a women’s college until her family called her home because of the economic impact of the Depression in the 1930s. That college and its faculty made a lasting impact on her, even though she was never able to complete her education or to travel outside the United States. Like Georgia College, that college is now a COPLAC (Public Liberal Arts Colleges) school. The purpose of this endowed scholarship is to support female students majoring in English, who intend to study abroad.
Dr. Baugh-Bacon had a distinguished career as an educator, retiring as Professor Emeritus from Georgia College in 1996 after 27 years where she served as a professor and coordinator of graduate programs in the education department. She was recognized nationally as a pioneer in the development of freshman year experience curriculum and is well known for her role in childhood teacher education throughout the state. She remained active in teacher education until her death in July 2007.
