How Surveillance Cameras/Systems Can Protect Your Home

Why would you want to have a surveillance camera system for your house? The answer is actually pretty easy: to improve your home security! The facts are clear. A surveillance camera system for your home is recommended by just about all insurance companies and police departments. These experts know the importance of having surveillance cameras around your home to prevent home burglary.

In three studies that were done recently by psychologists at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte on what they called so-called "professionals"-criminals who didn't need to think twice about what they were doing, just did it automatically. Several findings came to light that will help protect your home against home burglary. In this article we will discuss the results of these three studies that seem to corroborate our long-held view that surveillance cameras can deter home burglary in two ways.

First, when burglars see surveillance security cameras around a home, they will more than likely choose another target. After all, they don't want to get caught and having their image on a security camera video is a sure way to get caught. And as indicated, the second way is if they do break-in, whether or not they saw the video cameras, their image will be turned over to law enforcement authorities and they will most certainly get caught.

Police post that video on their website resulting in a higher than average capture rate for the bad guys. Statistics show that when local law enforcement has a video of the burglary, the chances of catching the burglar improve by over 50%. Almost all insurance companies recommend the use of security cameras or a surveillance camera system to improve home security and prevent burglary. They go so far as to offer discounts for homeowners who do install surveillance cameras because they are a proven deterrent to home burglary and are a great way to improve your home security.

Recently a new phenomenon has occurred. With the proliferation of security cameras and surveillance cameras, police have enlisted the help of homeowners in neighborhoods and they have banded them together for what we will call a "video neighborhood watch." The idea got started when a homeowner with a security camera system caught a burglar breaking into a neighbor's car. When the police saw the video, they asked other homeowners who had security cameras if they saw anything on their system. At least three communities we know of have put this system into practice: homeowners with surveillance camera systems teaming up to help police stop crime.
