PRESEASON NOTES 2010 Georgia Soccer Quick Hits FIRST YEAR HEAD COACH: The 2010 Georgia soccer campaign will mark the beginning of an era as first year head coach Steve Holeman makes his Bulldog debut. Holeman was announced as the fourth head coach in the history of the program on April 16, following the resignation of Patrick Baker for family, health and personal reasons. Holeman came to Athens after spending 15 years at Ole Miss and one at Auburn, compiling a career record of 165-124-31 and helping the Rebels to four NCAA Tournament appearances. 14 NEWCOMERS: The 2010 signing day was a busy one for the UGA soccer team as it announced the addition of 14 incoming freshmen for the upcoming fall. The class includes six signees from the Peach State in addition to as far north as Pennsylvania and as west as Arizona. Included in the 2010 class are two goalkeepers, five defenders, four midfielders, and three forwards. Georgia also returns 20 of 28 players in 2010, including eight who made at least 10 starts in 2009. TOUGH SCHEDULE: The Georgia soccer team again faces tough non-conference competition to prepare for the always-challenging SEC schedule and ultimately the NCAA Tournament. The schedule is highlighted by nine home dates -- at one of the most attended soccer facilities in the nation in the UGA Soccer Stadium -- and eight match-ups with 2009 NCAA Tournament teams. The slate features a date with 2009 national runner-up Stanford on the road in Palo Alto, Calif., on Sept. 10, in addition to marquee match-ups vs. Santa Clara and SEC rival South Carolina – both of which advanced to the Sweet 16 a season ago. The SEC Championships will again be held in Orange Beach, Ala., from Nov. 3-7. The NCAA first and second rounds are set for Nov. 12-14, while the Sweet 16 weekend is Nov. 19-20. The NCAA Final Four and national title game are Nov. 3 and 5, respectively. SPRING RECAP: This past spring the team went 2-2-3, highlighted by a 2-2 tie to the Mexico Full National Team in Orlando, Fla., on April 10. Georgia collected wins against SEC rival Tennessee as well as Furman during the off-season slate, with six different players finding the scoring column and goalkeeper Ashley Baker played solid in goal, seeing full action in all but one contest. HISTORIC 2009 SEASON: The Georgia soccer team made history in 2009 when it advanced to its third straight NCAA Tournament. Selected to the 64-team field with an at-large bid, the Bulldogs were pitted in the Chapel Hill, N.C., region and squared off against UNC Wilmington in the first round. There, Georgia used two goals from sophomore Ashley Miller and one from senior Carrie Patterson to earn a 3-0 win and advance to the second round for the fifth time. The Bulldogs dropped that second round match-up to the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels by a 4-0 margin, concluding the campaign with an overall record of 15-6-1 (7-4-0 SEC). That conference record marked the first time in program history in which the squad put up back-to-back-to-back winning records in league play. Their 15 wins are tied for second most all-time in a single season (1997), behind only the 2007 team which posted 18 victories. The Bulldogs went on to post the best 12-game start in team history (10-1-1) and posted back-to-back-to-back SEC road shutouts for the first time in school history Sept. 27-Oct. 4. On Oct. 16 in Athens, the Bulldogs handed No. 5 South Carolina its first loss of the season to date, using two goals from Carrie Patterson to down the Gamecocks, 2-1.

COACHES & STAFF
HEAD coach
Steve Holeman First Season at Georgia • 17th Overall • 165-124-31 (.516) • Wake Forest 1990
Steve Holeman enters his first season at Georgia after spending the previous 15 seasons as the head coach at Ole Miss. The dean of SEC soccer coaches, Holeman is the fourth head coach at Georgia since the program’s inception in 1995. Holeman started the women’s soccer program at Auburn in 1993, then moved to Oxford, Miss., where he began the soccer program for the Rebels in 1995. Entering the 2010 season, Holeman has a career record of 165-124-31. In addition to the four NCAA Tournament appearances under Holeman’s direction, Ole Miss won three SEC Western Division titles and made an appearance in the SEC Tournament Finals in 1999. The four NCAA Tournament appearances (2002, 2003, 2005, 2009) include a trip to the second round in 2003 when the Rebels defeated the Texas Longhorns. In 2005, Holeman led the Rebels to a 14-5-2 record including an 8-1-2 mark in league play. He was honored by Soccer Buzz as the 2005 Central Region Coach of the Year runner-up. Holeman ranks third all-time among league coaches with 165 victories, while his 16 years in the conference makes him the longest-tenured active SEC women’s soccer coach. Holeman produced 29 All-SEC selections for the Rebels, and had at least one all-league player every year since 1996. Under Holeman, Ole Miss players were among the nation’s elite in the classroom with eight Academic/Scholar All-America honorees and 33 Academic All-Region selections. The Rebels received the NSCAA Team Academic Award six of the past nine years. At Auburn, Holeman put together the Tigers’ first-ever women’s soccer program in only six weeks and led the team to winning record at 7-6-3 in its inaugural campaign. Holeman has served on the staff at the Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He was head coach of the South Region team at the U.S. Soccer Festival in 2001-02, and guided them to a gold medal finish at the 2001 event in Chicago. Holeman, who holds a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “A” coaching license, began his coaching career while still a student-athlete at Wake Forest University. In 1991, Holeman guided the Huntsville (Ala.) under-17 boys select team to the Alabama state championship. From 1992-94, he served as coach of the Auburn men’s club team. At the same time he was beginning his coaching career, Holeman also played soccer at Wake Forest. A four-year letterman at midfield, he helped lead the Demon Deacons to the NCAA Tournament in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

In 1989, he was a member of the Wake Forest team that clinched the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament second round. During that 1989 season, Wake Forest was ranked as high as No. 3 in the nation. Holeman played professional soccer as a member of the Montgomery Capitals, a semi-pro team based in Montgomery, Ala., in 1993 and 1994. He also played on the Alabama Men’s All-Star Indoor Team in 1992. His knowledge and respect throughout college soccer recently earned him the position of chairman for the NCAA men’s and women’s soccer rules committee, a position he held in 2004-05. A native of West Long Branch, N.J., Holeman graduated from Wake Forest in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports science. In 1993, he received his master’s degree in exercise physiology from Auburn, maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout his graduate studies. Holeman has also successfully completed coursework toward a doctorate degree in exercise physiology. Holeman was named the Georgia head coach on April 16, 2010. Born Dec. 21, 1967, Holeman is married to the former Julie Newton of Goodman, Miss., and they have a daughter, five-year old Anna Mae, and a son, one-year old Robert (Bo) Stephen.
The Georgia Head Coaches Pledge “These student-athletes are entrusted to my care. I will train them to the best of my ability. I will develop them into smartly disciplined, physically fit, highlytrained athletes thoroughly indoctrinated in love for the Georgia Bulldogs who represent the University of Georgia and the athletic program in the highest possible manner. I will encourage our athletes and insist that they perform to the best of their ability in the classroom as well as in the arena of competitive athletics. I will require of them, and demonstrate by my own example, the highest standards of integrity, personal conduct, morality, sportsmanship and professional skill.”

ASSISTANT coach
Dan Blank
First Season at Georgia • Bethany College 1991
Dan Blank enters his first year on the Georgia soccer staff after spending the previous three seasons at Ole Miss under Steve Holeman. Blank was a volunteer coach for the Rebels in 2007 and 2008 before he was promoted to a full-time assistant in 2009. In his first year in charge of the Ole Miss defense, Blank helped lead the Rebels to the best goals-against average in the SEC. Blank boasts a wealth of coaching experience and success at many levels of soccer. Prior to joining the Rebel staff in 2007, he spent nine years as the head women’s coach at Embry-Riddle University after building the program from scratch in 1998. A threetime Florida Sun Conference Coach of the Year and NAIA Region 14 Coach of the Year, Blank compiled a 98-61-8 record and guided the Eagles to three conference titles, three NAIA Region XIV titles and three NAIA national tournament appearances. Before his time at Embry-Riddle, Blank spent three seasons as head coach of the nationally ranked Brewton-Parker College women’s program where he amassed a 47-13-3 record. He led the Barons to two NAIA tournament berths and three league titles, earning Georgia Athletic Conference Coach of the Year plaudits each season. The Barons were ranked as high as fourth nationally all three years. Prior to his tenure at Brewton-Parker, Blank served for three years as assistant coach for Wheeling Jesuit College, helping that program to three national tournament berths and three regional and district titles. Blank has also had success on the semi-pro level, having served as an assistant coach and assistant general manager for the USL W-League’s Atlanta Classics from 1997-98 and head coach of the Jacksonville Jade in 2001 and 2002, leading that franchise to its first
winning record. Blank has helped produce more than 25 collegiate All-Americans and numerous NAIA Scholar-Athletes and Academic All-America picks. He holds a USSF “A” License and an advanced national diploma from the NSCAA. Blank played his collegiate soccer at Bethany College (W. Va.), where he earned a bachelor’s degree in communications in 1991. At Bethany he played under coaching legend Graham Ramsay and helped the Bison to four straight NCAA Division III Tournament berths.

ASSISTANT coach/recruiting coordinator
Robin Confer
Sixth Season at Georgia • North Carolina 1998
Robin Confer begins her sixth season as Georgia’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator after serving as the Bulldogs’ interim head coach in the spring of 2010. As the recruiting coordinator, Confer has played an integral role in bringing the three highest-ranked signing classes in UGA history to Athens. The 2006 class was ranked No. 8, the 2007 group was rated No. 14 and the 2008 class earned a No. 15 ranking. The Georgia program has been successful in keeping the best in-state talent at UGA, as six of the incoming 14 freshman hail from the Peach State while 21 players since 2006 have come from Georgia. As a former forward for the U.S. National Team, Confer pays special attention to Georgia’s attacking players. In 2007 she helped coach sophomore Carrie Patterson to NSCAA SecondTeam All-American accolades, as she became just the second Bulldog ever to earn that award. In 2006, Patterson earned SoccerBuzz Freshman All-America, SEC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All-SEC and Second-team All-Southeast Region honors, and left Georgia as the school’s all-time leader in goals, assists, points, and multi-goal games under Confer’s direction. Patterson was ultimately drafted 40th overall in the 2010 Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) draft. Confer also assisted with the transition of senior Ali Williams from defender to forward in 2005, a move which sent Williams on to earn SEC Offensive Player of the Year recognition. Confer joined the staff at Florida State after a stellar career in the ACC and successful coaching stints in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12 and Southeastern Conference. The former 1997 National Player of the Year and three-time national champion at North Carolina is embarking on her 10th year in the collegiate coaching ranks. Under Confer’s watch in Tallahassee, the Seminoles posted a 29-13-4 overall record, a 9-5-2 mark in the ACC and advanced to the program’s first College Cup in 2003. But Confer is no stranger to life in the SEC, as she was an assistant coach at Mississippi State for one season under head coach Neil McGuire before joining the Seminole staff. Before her stint in Starkville, Miss., Confer served as a second assistant at one of the top women’s soccer programs in the nation at Texas A&M. While working with Aggie head coach G. Guerrieri, Confer and Texas A&M advanced to the Sweet 16 in back-toback NCAA Tournaments. In addition to her UGA coaching responsibilities, Confer is a

Southeast Region III ODP staff coach and is also involved with ODP in the state of Georgia. Confer’s first coaching experience came at her alma mater as she served as a volunteer assistant under coaching legend Anson Dorrance at North Carolina. A four-year starter at North Carolina from 1994-1997, Confer helped the Tar Heels to three national championships (1994, 1996-1997). During her senior season, Confer was named the National Player of the Year by both the Soccer News and SoccerBuzz. In North Carolina’s run to the 1997 National Championship, Confer was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player of the NCAA Final Four, as well as being named a first-team All-American. She was also a finalist for the Hermann Award, which recognizes the nation’s top collegiate soccer athlete, and a semifinalist for the Missouri Athletic Club Sports Foundation Player of the Year award in 1998. Confer currently ranks fourth on UNC’s career point-scoring list behind such great names as Mia Hamm and April Heinrichs. She is the fifth-leading goal scorer in Tar Heel history with 77 tallies, and her 55 career assists are the sixth most in North Carolina soccer history. Confer never missed a game in her Carolina career and holds the NCAA record with most games played at 107. She is one of just 11 former North Carolina players to have had their jersey retired. She was also named to The Atlantic Coast Conference 50th Anniversary Women’s Soccer team which recognized the top 50 players in the conference since 1987. A former captain of the U.S U-20 Youth National team, Confer eventually made her Women’s National Team debut January 18, 1996, against Ukraine and was a member of the pool from 96-99 and earned eight caps and one goal. In 2001, she was drafted in the fifth round of the WUSA’s Global Draft as a member of the Boston Breakers in the league’s inaugural season before a back injury cut her playing career short. Confer was a standout forward at Clearwater (FL) Central Catholic High School where she scored 227 goals, including 80 during her senior season prior to being named a Parade All-American. Confer received her bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science from North Carolina in 1998.
COACHES & STAFF
Volunteer ASSISTANT/goalkeepers coach
Steve Nugent
Third Season at Georgia • Florida Atlantic 1996
Steve Nugent enters his third year on the Georgia coaching staff and will concentrate on training the Bulldog goalkeepers, recruiting, academics, and team travel. Nugent has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the college, club, ODP, and high school levels. Prior to joining the staff at UGA, he served as the High School age director and recruiting coordinator for Team Boca in Boca Raton, Fla. Nugent’s work with Georgia’s goalkeepers in 2008 and 2009 helped Michelle Betos record 117 saves, second most in a single season. Betos also recorded a 0.61 goals against average during SEC play and led the league in shutouts and wins. From 1989 to 2000 and then again from 2002 to 2008, Nugent was a driving force behind Team Boca’s girls program and one of the original staff coaches. Nugent led the 88/89 White team to State Championship appearances at U14, U15, U16, and U18 winning the championship at U15. Nugent coached the 90/91 White team that claimed tournament titles at the Raleigh Shootout, Orange Classic and the 2007 Disney Showcase. From 1996 to 2003, he coached the 1985 team to 8 State Championship appearances winning the title an unprecedented seven times (an FYSA record). Since 1989, Nugent has coached 12 state championship teams and has taken 16 teams to the final four and has worked with hundreds of young girls reach their goal of playing high level college soccer and ultimately achieving their educational goals. Many of the Team Boca players over the years have represented both FYSA on the ODP state teams and over 40 different girls have been invited into the Region III ODP player pool. Team Boca has had 11 players reach the ultimate goal of playing for their respective National Team. Fifteen different players have represented the youth national teams since 1990. In January 2006, Nugent received the prestigious honor of being selected as the NSCAA Southern Region Coach of the Year. He was chosen amongst his peers for his continued success on and off the field with Team Boca. The criteria used in selecting Steve Nugent was “the overall strength of his resume
along with the fact that he is extremely well respected by his coaching peers” said Kathy Zolad, who is the NSCAA Selection Committee Chairperson, as well as a current NSCAA Board Member. The NSCAA also awarded Nugent with his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma with a Distinguished Passing grade. Nugent’s collegiate experience includes both NAIA and NCAA teams. During the 2000-2001 college seasons, Nugent spent time at FSU as a graduate assistant coach and was previously the lead assistant at Rice University under Head Coach Chris Huston. Nugent worked with Huston at Rice and started the women’s program from scratch helping to recruit the first class of 14 freshmen in 2001, worked on team sponsorship, prepared on-field coaching, and was the recruiting coordinator. From 1994-1996, he was a volunteer assistant coach at Lynn University where the women won the 1995 NAIA National Championship and were the 1996 runner up. Upon returning to Team Boca in 2002 he was appointed the Director of Coaching at Team Boca. Since then Team Boca has put more teams in the FYSA Final Four than any other club. In 2004, the club enjoyed the most success ever for a girls program in Florida sending six teams to the final four. That year Team Boca took home three state titles (U15, U18, and U19) and all three teams represented Florida at Southern Regionals in Austin, Texas. Nugent’s teams have been recognized on two occasions with the Fair Play Award at the USYSA Region III tournament, have won many prestigious tournaments throughout the U.S. including Raleigh, Orange Classic, Shootout, and the Disney Showcase. Nugent has spent the better part of 19 years as both a director and staff member at camps throughout the U.S. Nugent holds the USSF B License, KNVB Dutch coaching certificate, NSCAA Level I and Level II Goalkeeping license, the USYS Youth National Coaching License, and the NSCAA Advanced National Diploma. A native of Boston, Mass., Nugent earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Florida Atlantic University in 1996. He is married to the former Janna Satz of Miami, Fla., and they two sons, Trevor and Brady and a third son (Connor) due in October.
