Yes, There’s an App for That!
Clinician: Dr. Joanna Kim-Doyle – University of North Georgia Presider: Dr. Andrew Santander – University of North Georgia Host: Gayle Vann – GMEA Member With the wealth of digital technologies currently available, greater opportunities exist to integrate technology into music teaching and learning. Today’s students can process information better and quicker with these innovations. The traditional approach to learning and improving one’s skill has been a solo act: to practice alone for a long period of time, which is considered boring and tedious for many students. Transforming piano instruction to meet the demands of the 21st century begins with an acknowledgment that today’s students have opportunities to learn in different ways. This session will survey music educational technology applications that are available to piano instruction. It will provide a list of pedagogical music “apps” that will accommodate piano students’ learning preferences effectively. Sponsor: University of North Georgia, Music Department

Things They Forgot to Teach or Were Afraid You Might Find Out Clinician: Tim Seelig – Shawnee Press Presider: Tramaine Quarterman – Tucker High School Host: Scott Smith – Central Middle School Many of us received extraordinary educations but not much practical job training. Most of the education dealt with the time spent actually conducting – sometimes we are lucky if that is 10%. This session will cover all of the rest. All too often, we arrived at our first job, ready and eager to go, diploma in hand, only to find out we were not as prepared as we thought! We found out the hard way that much of it was not going to be useful for quite awhile. What was it our professors forgot to tell us – or didn’t want us to know for fear we would turn around midstream? All of the secrets are now uncovered! Taught by someone with four college degrees, this humorous and insightful session fills in those blanks from: “But kids scare me!” to “How not to lose your voice every October.” to “What happens when my Middle School choir can’t sing Britten’s War Requiem?”
