“

As a student coming from a European background, I have been taught from a very young age that you are never done learning. I strive to engage myself in as many learning experiences as possible, in order to better myself, and create a diverse bank of information. Dance has been a very important part of my life, opening me up to connections all around the world, as well as comfort in social situations. It has been my passion for the past 10 years, and now it is time to pass my focus onto architecture. Attending the University of Waterloo with the outlook of a dancer, I am confident in my ability to combine both beauty and practicality in the architectural realm. I am in architecture in my own attempt to better the world; design for the spaces where people stop to tie their shoes. Make every space pleasant, and inspiring to someone.

Architecture | Interiors | Engineering The learning opportunities that come with working at a large, self sufficient firm, have proven to be immensely rich. Working side by side with the veterans of the trade, professionals from across seas, and interacting closely with different departments has opened my eyes to what architecture itself has to offer.

“Georgiana, has a very positive, energetic, and professional attitude towards her work. She has a pleasant disposition, is creative, works well with minimal supervision, she is well-spoken and can demonstrate and communicate her ideas poetically and with clarity. Georgiana is a great team member, she takes direction well and openly shares her opinions on alternate ideas and approaches, adding to the design dialogue and solutions. She is clearly dedicated to excellence and innovation in architecture and design, she approaches design problems with great enthusiasm, and will make a great contribution to the profession of architecture. I would strongly recommend her to other prospective architectural firms. -Mark Travis, Senior Associate, Stantec

Design

I took part in the atrium design of a new commercial retail centre, with the opportunity to present the designs to the client, and work with the lead architect to transform them into realistic creations. I have also taken part in the production of construction drawings, learning about technical side of design, and the necessities for a drawing set.

Toker + Associates architectural industrial design inc. Toker + Associates has provided me with endless opportunities to challenge myself and learn from a variety of people who excel in their specialization. The firm has aided me in my ability to adapt to change and adapt to quick paced projects. “Georgiana was an amazing co-op student - one of the best we have ever had the privilege of working with. She is determined, enthusiastic and professional all at the same time. She made significant contributions to the work of the office, at a high level. She was thoughtful in how she independently approached her tasks, accurate in her deliverables, and conscientious in terms of making sure her projects were passed-on to others prior to her departure. She is welcome back anytime! -Eric Toker, Principal, Toker + Associates

Justice Solicitor General, Edmonton, AB; I assisted in conducting Job Function Profiling Engagement sessions with each of the 32 departments within the Alberta Ministry of Justice, as well as producing a summary report of the findings and space requirements for each of the branches. Vision for an Age-Friendly City, Edmonton, AB; I conducted engagement sessions with the seniors in order to receive feedback about conditions of public parks and buildings. I created the engagement panels used during the sessions, as well as the reporting of the results and future steps. In addition, I also assisted in creating the guidelines for an Age-Friendly Edmonton based of the World Health Organization guidelines .

LEED Experience in Existing Buildings; Operations and Maintenence, Commercial Interiors and New Construction. During my co-op term, I have worked on certifying the following buildings: Scotia Place Tower, SNC Lavalin, Meyers Norris Penny Calgary, Spring Gardens Building D, Calgary City Hall Floors 9 and 12. In my role as a LEED Specialist, my tasks included: • Coordinating/corresponding with consultants, clients, and the CaGBC • Client advisory • Creation of organizing documentation • Registering and Submitting LEED Projects • Project scheduling • Gathering, Review and Evaluating of documents for submission

Render Working with the project team, I had an input on design decision, schematic design, and the coordination of the rendering consultants for the Resortation and Addition to the Canmore Hotel. Cloud A Whimsical Scaffold Cloud provides a majestic environment in which to explore your own imagination, to play, or to read, this lined scaffold is the perfect getaway for any adult or child. The inner lining consists of a soft, dense field of feathers, creating a sensation of comfort for the user, while the outer lining is a series of hard acrylic feathers, harsher in feel, to provide a protective layer to the cloud and the user inside.

The basic structure of the scaffold is created by joining the scaffold modules to create a hexagonal grid. Because of the limited space on the 2 dimensional field, when there is an increase of modules, the cells deform in order to accommodate the larger number of CHEUNG modules. Using the method of bifurcation, a hexagonal mesh quickly becomes PATRICK a sea of intermixed pentagons, hexagons and heptagons, building off each other1 to create a net of waves. Human Scale Nest Installation for the City

Exchange creates an environment in which the experience of the upper level is dependent on the motion happening on the first level. As people begin to wander, the Hex Unit releases and latches onto the mesh at ground level, then lifting it to create a hill like mound on the ground, thus not allowing passage through it. This acts on either side of the person, creating only two options for movement. As the person begins to wander farther, the path which they take is dependent on the direction they wish to walk in when presented with the two options.

On the second level, as a Hex drops, the supporting rod for the ceiling element drops along with it, as it is attached to the center element of the Hex. This then creates different patterns with the moveable triangular ceiling panels. Because of the ability of the Hex`s to move independently, Exchange can be a stand alone installation in a park setting, dealing only with one level of interaction. This allows for a wider range of exposure options for the public.

Perception

Human scale as a method of relation

In relation to the world, the human scale is an instinctive method we use to interact with our surroundings. It defines how we perceive things to be. Toronto’s well connected pathways and modes of transportation allow citizens and visitors to navigate through the city, to experience the variety of scales. These differences in scale affect the person, offering a unique relationship from neighborhood to neighborhood. These series of relationships throughout Toronto have been incorporated within one building, creating the potential for multiple connections in a one block radius.

Perception combines a diverse range of program including a hotel, condo, restaurant, car display room, banquet hall, bank, and retail shops. The circulation through the spaces mimics the interactions of people and the street , meanwhile retaining the privacy of those spaces that must remain more secluded. The residential tower contains single and double storey units to address the diversity seen in the residential market in Toronto, as well as providing spacious balcony areas, and an open space on each floor to allow for a communal green space, as well as open interaction of residents.

Planterbox An invention of Extra Small Living

The new trend in modern architecture is creating compact spaces which accommodate each aspect of the living quarters. The front wall contains angled planters used as a natural filter for the water. This mechanism is then protected by a glass door which is retractable to allow for air circulation. The interior contains a steel mesh wall upon which the millwork rest on. Behind this wall, are the partially boiler room components. This is a 1:20 physical model created from foamcore, steel mesh for the interior screen wall, plexiglass, and millboard. The renders are created using Rhino.

ReVamp

Steel Structures Education Foundation The space is intended to be all access, contemporary art exhibit, available to the public year round. The structure incorporates elements from multiple transportation devices such as railways, retired subway cars, and bus shelter panels, which in turn act to create an internally mobile envelope.

The unit consists of two types of wall panels – ones which rotate upwards during the summertime, and ones which have the ability to slide to one side of the structure. In the warmer months, the entire structure is able to be altered completely to provide maximum circulation and light into the space . In the colder months, the building is entirely enclosed with the panels slid back to their original positions, and the rotating doors back down alongside the sliding panels.

Frame

Managing Space

Frame is a set of modular structures that works functionally and structurally to support activities as well as items. Upon entering the existing room, there was a strong symmetrical divide created by the openings. The installation consists of four modules that can be positioned in a variety of configurations to create different circulation patterns within the room. When the module is positioned the right side up, the triangular surface is low enough to be a sitting surface, but when it is placed upside down, the surface is then located higher up along the surface of the frame and becomes a table top. The various spaces created by the installation create a platform for social interaction and individual synthesis.

UWaterloo Architecture Ico Play 2013

As part of the 2B UWSA play, my role was an actor, as well as the Choreography Coordinator, which quickly began to work hand in hand with that of the Director. I had the privilege of leading the team of actors and dancers through a four month endeavors of workshops, practices, acting tutorials, auditions, dress rehearsals and show. I collaborated with each of the other departments (music, writing, costume, set design, etc) on a daily basis.
