10 PLACES TO VISIT IN GEORGIA THIS SUMMER Don’t tell us that you thought that summer in Georgia is seaside vacation only! Yes, you can have pretty much fun in Batumi, swimming, dancing, listening to jazz during Black Sea Jazz Fest (23 - 26.07) and tasting awesome local food. You can relax in Gonio, Kvariati, Chakvi and Kobuleti, a bit far from loud music and discos. Beaches of Ureki can improve your health with their magnetic sands, and in Anaklia you can dance from dusk till dawn and even longer during GEM-Fest 2015 (30.07 – 07.08). But no, no, it is still too few! Here you have some tips how to make your summer really incredible. Just travel to these places, enjoy the diversity of nature and store great memories in your mind. 1- Martvili Canyon (Samegrelo) Located at river Abasha, this canyon is a great place for those who are tired of heat. Take a boat trip, swim in transparent water between small cliffs or take a bath in waterfalls, look how beautiful are rays of light falling from above. The closest town is Martvili. You can also see Martvili monastery on the way to or from canyon. 2- Prometheus Cave (Imereti) Another place to escape from summer heat. Discovered in 1984, now this cave offers a 1 km long walking route through colourful caverns and a boat trip through an underground lake. It is even possible to get married in

16 GeorgianDay Magazine

one of the halls! The closest town to Prometheus cave is Tskaltubo. Take into consideration that the cave is closed on Mondays! 3- Shatili (Mtskheta-Mtianeti) A small village in North-Eastern Georgia, Shatili amazes with it architecture: the houses are situated on the cliffs, as birds’ nests. Mountainous landscapes there are simply breathtaking! You can go there from Tbilisi with a minibus or taxi. On your way, make a photo stop near Zhinvali reservoir. 4- Uplistsikhe (Shida Kartli) In this cave town not far from Gori and Tbilisi you can see how people have lived here several thousand years ago. Stone hewn streets and around 150 caves for different purposes (residential, ritual) remained till our days. 5- Okatse Canyon (Imereti) Spectacular views and well maintained routes will make you enjoy your hike. In 4 km from canyon, there is also waterfall Kinchkha, one of the tallest and beautiful waterfalls of Georgia. You can definitely see it all in one day! The closest city to the canyon is Kutaisi. You can take a minibus to village Gordi, and from there reach the visitor center of Okatse on foot.

Most resorts in Georgia during summers are generally packed with tourists. Be warned however, that coastal areas will be awkwardly humid for those not used to tropical climates.

10 PLACES TO VISIT IN GEORGIA THIS SUMMER 6- Vardzia (Samtskhe-Javakheti) Imagine: all this complicated system of caves has been established in the XII century (around 900 years ago!), used to be inhabited by around 30.000 people, and the whole town actually belonged to glorious Queen Tamar. Now you can see her face at well preserved fresco in a monastery which is maintained by several monks. The closest town is Akhaltsikhe. On your way to Vardzia you can also see Rabati fortress, which has been recently renovated, and Khertvisi fortress, which is well preserved. Make sure you are not planning your trip on Monday, because both Vardzia and Rabati are closed! 7- Kintrishi Protected Areas (Ajara) Located near Kobuleti, this protected area offers you several beautiful trails, where you can discover typical Ajarian arch bridges, waterfalls and enjoy the coolness of forest. Very nice idea for a day trip, if you are somewhere in Ajara and want to see more than beaches. 8- Kakhetian wine towns The whole region of Kakheti is famous for its wineries. If you are confused and don’t know where to go, we’d recommend you to visit at least one or two of those sites: Telavi with its medieval fortress and 900-yearold sycamore, Ikalto Academy – alma mater of Shota Rustaveli, Alaverdi monastery and its wine cellar, Tsinandali and house-museum of Georgian poet Alexander Chavchavadze (wine cellar is still in the mansion!), Kvareli and wine tunnel there, or Sighnaghi, city of love, which is famous not just for wine, but also for well preserved city walls and monastery Bodbe.

18 GeorgianDay Magazine

9- Mestia and Ushguli (Svaneti) Svaneti is one of the most beautiful regions in Georgia. You will be fascinated by Caucasus peaks (the highest peak in Georgia, Shkhara, is there with its 5193 m of awesomeness). Mestia has recently become a good destination for skiers, but in summer it all looks very attractive for hikers, trekkers, campers and those who want to escape from any rush. Ushguli is considered to be one of highest constantly inhabited settlements in Europe. It amazes with its authenticity, and is actually reachable for tourists just during several month per year, so hurry up to visit it this summer! Waterfalls, glaciers, medieval towers in each household (towers of Upper Svaneti are under UNESCO protection, by the way) – does it sound like an interesting place to go? 10- Borjomi Yes, of course, we all know that you’ve heard of Borjomi water. Maybe it even saved you after a night out. But Borjomi water from a natural spring is something different (and also healing, no doubts). You can have a nice walk through Mineral water park, or hike in Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park (there are trails for one day trip and for several days as well). SPA-treatment in one of hotels can also be one of the greatest things to try this summer. Give your body and soul a break: bring them to Borjomi!

SAMEBA CATHEDRAL SAMEBA – HOLY TRINITY CATHEDRAL Built in year 2004, the Holy Trinity Tsminda Sameba Cathedral is also called the symbol of new Georgia. The beauty and sizes of cathedral are indeed breathtaking, and rises magnificently on the hill of the St. Ilya, on the left bank of the Kura River. Sameba is the highest church in Georgia. It is 101m high. For comparison, before Sameba, the Alaverdi Cathedral in Kakheti was considered the tallest, with about 50m in height. Sameba Cathedral was built with grandiose scope. Its golden dome is practically seen from any point in Tbilisi. The cathedral is part of the entire complex including residence of the Patriarch and a monastery, school of theology and academy, hotel and the complex consisting of nine chapels, five of which are located under the ground. Construction of Sameba Cathedral was timed to the 2000th anniversary of Christianity and 1500th anniversary of the independence of the Georgian church. The construction of the cathedral was decided in 1989 but it started only on 23 November 1995. The first divine service in cathedral was held on 25 December 2002 during the construction works that finally ended in 2004. Construction was sponsored by wealthy residents of the city. The square of the Sameba Cathedral equals 5000 square meters, and can place up to 15,000 people. The foundation of the cathedral was done according to all traditions: pieces from holy spots were placed in its basement like rocks from the Sion Mountain and the Jordan River, soil from Jerusalem and from the tomb of St. George. The Patriarch and the President have laid the memorial nameplates too. Bells for the cathedral

were cast in Germany. There are nine of them, and the biggest weighs 8,000 kg. The cathedral is designed in the spirit of modernism, and its architecture has little similarities with old traditions. Faces of the cathedral are done exquisitely with arches and unique fretwork. There are beautiful frescoes created under the supervision of the icon painter Amiran Goglidze on the walls of the Sameba Cathedral. Catholicos Patriarch of Georgia Ilia II also took part in painting works of the Tsminda Sameba Cathedral; he painted several icons and a big image of the Holy Virgin that can be seen at the entrance. There are two floors under the ground; on the second floor there are museum and conference hall. Holy Trinity Cathedral is considered one of the main sights of Tbilisi.

The Trinity (Sameba) Cathedral is one of the tallest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the World. The cathedral complex includes an underground section and integrates nine chapels, various supplementary buildings, and beautiful gardens.

AKHALTSIKHE ‘NEW CASTLE’ IN GEORGIAN Akhaltsikhe is a town in Southern Georgia, founded in Middle Ages. Its name means “a new fortress”, because the town’s fortress used to be the most important landmark of the region. In 1579 it was a center of a region of Ottoman Empire, then, during Russian – Turkish war in 1828 – 1829, it was brought back to Georgia, which used to be a part of Russian Empire.

part of Rabati includes touristic objects as hotels, cafes, restaurants, an information center, and even a marriage hall. It is a very beautiful place for a wedding ceremony and a romantic photo shooting, indeed!

Now, the huge freshly renovated fortress of Rabati remains the main landmark of Akhaltsikhe. Its upper part includes the castle of Jakeli family, where the Museum of Samtskhe-Javakheti region is situated; there are also an Akhmediye Mosque, an orthodox church, an amphitheatre and a citadel. If we talk about important landmarks of SamtskheJavakheti region, we can’t avoid mentioning Vardzia, an impressive cave town founded by King George III in the XII century. During its golden time it accommodated around 50.000 people. The infrastructure included living quarters, wine

Beside this, there are also several interesting places near Akhaltsikhe: an ancient fortress of Atskuri, which has been constructed in the X century, and also Saphara monastery, which kept its beauty even after the most difficult years in Georgian history.

cellars, religious places like churches or monasteries, and even a library. There was even a sewerage system in the town! Hard to believe, that already in XII century far in the mountains people could live in such a developed town hewn in rocks‌ That’s why you have to go to Vardzia to see it with your own eyes! HIKING AND TREKKING TIPS If you want to have a fun day in the outdoors and enjoy your day, you need to consider some essential tips.

30 GeorgianDay Magazine

• Plan properly as it is an important factor to start with. Obtain trail maps, guidebooks, trail distance, estimated time required and any other information before you leave on a hike. You may use a GPS. • Check weather conditions and forecast and dress accordingly. Always dress in layers. • Consider the ability level of everyone in your group, when choosing a hike.

• Inform someone about your plans and when you expect to return. This is important as this could help with the rescue in case of any emergency. • Never hike alone. Always go with a friend and in group. • Keep your pack weight as light as possible. • Take plenty of water – 2 or 3 quarts per person. Staying hydrated will help maintain your energy level. • Start early so that you have enough time to enjoy your hike and to reach your destination on time. Plan to head back so you finish your hike well before dark. • Don’t hike so quickly and fast and save your energy. • Keep track of your progress on the map so that you know where you are at all times. • Bring a whistle on hikes. Three short whistles mean you are in trouble and need assistance. • Take a First Aid Kit and learn how to use everything in your first aid kit. • Apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses. Even on cloudy days you can get sunburn in a very short period of time. Sunburn can ruin any vacation. • Instruct your children to stay within your sight. Give them each a whistle to wear around their neck to be used only in an emergency. Agree on a location to meet. • Check with campground about their security policies. • Closely supervise your dog around children, other visitors and other dogs.

• Wild animals may look cute and harmless but they are very unpredictable and can be very territorial and protective. So, never approach them or feed them. Always be alert and aware of your surroundings. • Look out for snakes, spiders and other critters. Watch where you are walking, be careful when picking up sticks or rocks and look around before taking a seat. Again, snakes are usually more afraid of us, but if they feel threatened or if you make sudden movements they may strike. Stay calm and slowly move away from them. • Be careful where you are walking. Watch out for low branches and loose rocks. Stay away from steep cliffs and other drop off areas. • Don’t drink soda or alcohol when hiking. They will dehydrate you. • Replenish your ice often. Keep your food cold at all times to avoid food spoilage and food poisoning. • Practice good fire safety. • Clear area of all debris/avoid area with overhanging branches. • Construct a fire ring surrounded by rocks. • Have a bucket of water, shovel and a fire extinguisher nearby and ready to put out a fire. • NEVER build a fire near tents or other flammable items. • Never use flammable fluids to start a fire. • Never leave fire unattended. • Build a fire only as big as you need. • Make sure to completely extinguish fire.

3 FUTURE-TREND PROJECTS BY ALLIANCE GROUP

The technological advances that have been undertaken in the world dictate new lifestyle standards. And you don’t need to watch a Luc Besson mega sci-fi blockbuster to get a taste of what these standards might look like. Located in three distinct parts of the country, these new projects are exclusively designed, stylish, and embody a healthy lifestyle. Alliance Group uses only high-end, ecologically safe materials in its energy-efficient constructions. In total, $130 million will be invested in all three future-trend projects –Alliance Tbilisi, located in the heart of the capital; Alliance Palace, situated in the sunny seaside town of Batumi, and Alliance Resort, located in Goderdzi pass, in the Adjara highland region. These cutting-edge projects all have one thing in common: all of them have integrated renowned international hotel brands into their multifunctional concept. The management of Courtyard by Marriott, Wyndham Garden and Ramada Hotels, three of the most visible names in the global

hospitality industry, will be operated by the Swiss-based international management company Sophos Hotels S.A. Alliance Group, which was founded in 2005, has carried out more than 20 large-scale projects in Georgia. The company was the first to build a modern residential complex in the Adjara region in the early 2000s, and was the pioneer of the ‘Aparthotel’ business model in Georgia, officially adopting the concept in 2008. In 2015, the developer was first to come up with the idea to build a multifunctional complex combining apartments and a hotel in partnership with the internationally-acclaimed Courtyard by Marriott at the Alliance Palace. Later, Alliance Group incorporated Ramada – another international hospitality giant –into its Alliance Resort project. In 2017, the developer took it to the next level by adding a residential aspect to the sophisticated business concept of the aparthotel and a global hotel brand at its Alliance Tbilisi project featuring Wyndham Garden. Over the past 11 years, the company has invested more than $200 million in completed projects.

ALLIANCE TBILISI: A NEW LANDMARK IN THE CAPITAL CITY The future is all about innovation, and innovation is literally what Alliance Group offers to residents of Alliance Tbilisi located at 49, Chavchavadze Avenue in the Vake district. This premium-class complex catches the eye with its sheer scale and exclusive architecture. The 3-tower landmark consists of a 40-story residential building and two smaller mixed-type towers where Wyndham Garden Hotel and apartments will be situated. The appearance of the Wyndam Hotel brand, the world’s largest chain of hotels and resorts which operates 7,200 hotels in 67 countries, will turn the district of Vake into the capital’s newest tourist center. This kind of luxury development in the hospitality sector is of great value to a city that TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website, included on its list of ‘Destinations on the Rise’. Another reason Alliance Tbilisi is such an attractive project is because of its ecologically healthy location. Residents of Alliance Tbilisi will be able to breathe clean air blown-in from the forests of Tskneti, and enjoy the privileges of living in an area referred to as the ‘Lungs of Tbilisi’ by spending time relaxing on their terraced balconies. Alliance Tbilisi is being built using only high-end, environmentally-friendly materials, making it luxurious and energy-efficient all at once. Within the scope of this future-trend project, which will feature penthouses on the top two floors, and residential apartments on the lower floors, Alliance Group has combined all the amenities necessary for quality living: a three- story underground car park, swimming pool, fitness and spa center, as well as concierge service.

Both the infrastructural and the inner functional parts of the project include modern facilities, such as alternative energy sources, a technical room on each floor, cards instead of keys to access rooms, privilege cards that will enable residents to access exclusive benefits. Dwellers of Alliance Tbilisi are also free to use of the lobby, shared spaces and elevator services. Innovative and customized products and services lie at the heart of the project’s business model. The developer spared no costs on providing comfort to its residents, apartment owners and hotel guests. Air conditioning and central heating and cooling systems are included in all three towers. Affordable prices and flexible purchasing conditions make the complex even more attractive for both local and international buyers. Acquiring residential property at Alliance Tbilisi starts at $1,300 per square meter, while Wyndham apartments start at $1,100 per square meter. In both cases, making a 30% down payment is the first step one must take before becoming a property owner. The remaining costs can be covered gradually using the company’s interest-free loan. Prospective residents can also use the services of Alliance Group’s partner banks, and receive mortgage loans in one day, without income verification. Alternatively, you can purchase an apartment by providing a lump sum payment and receive a discount in the process. In total, Alliance Group will invest more than $75 million in the Alliance Tbilisi project, which will be completed in 2019. GeorgianDay Magazine 45

ALLIANCE PALACE: INVEST AND RECEIVE PROFIT AT A FABULOUS BATUMI RESORT With over 6 million international visitors, Georgia is becoming a must-visit destination for people all around the world. For those who enjoy the sunny Black Sea region, Alliance Group is building a world- class skyscraper in Batumi that will feature a Courtyard by Marriott Hotel on the first six floors. The appearance of this classic Marriott International brand, a leading multinational hospitality company that operates 6,000 hotels in 120 countries, will further strengthen the city’s international image as a luxury travel destination. The upper floors of the Alliance Palace – a 41-story multifunctional complex – will house premium-class apartments. This future-trend complex is being built just across the seashore on the city’s famous boulevard, which is the longest in Europe. All apartments at Alliance Palace – one-room (30.65 m2), two-room (53.30 m2), and three-room properties (77.65 m2) come with sea-views and balconies. This top-notch multifunctional complex is being built with high-end, ecologically safe, energy-efficient materials. Sophisticated services at Alliance Palace include reception, concierge, security, technical services, and house-keeping. Another value of Alliance Complex is its well-developed infrastructure: underground parking, indoor and outdoor pool, spa, fitness, a casino and restaurants. Apartments at Alliance Palace start as low as $1,200 per square meter, which is a fair price considering the luxury

benefits this complex provides. The Alliance Palace is based on a three- part business model. First, Courtyard by Marriott is integrated into the concept and development. Second, an investment in high-class properties in this region has seen values increase year on year by 15%. Third, the investment and gain profits associated with the aparthotel concept are hard to ignore. When purchasing an apartment at Alliance Palace you can gain additional profit from your investment. You can rent out the apartment independently, or you can let an international apartment management company handle it. They will manage, maintain and rent out your apartment for you, bringing you additional profit, allowing you to recoup the costs of your apartment within five years. You can purchase an apartment by depositing a lump sum payment and receive a discount. Alternatively, you can cover the cost of the apartment gradually by paying a 30% initial down payment (15%-special offer) and by using the company’s internal interest-free loan until the project is completed. You can also use the services of the company’s partner banks and receive mortgage loans in one day, without income verification. Alliance Group will invest $45 million in the Alliance Palace project. The apartments will be completed by June of 2018, and the Courtyard by Marriott hotel will officially be opened in April of 2019.

ALLIANCE RESORT: INTACT BEAUTY THAT WILL AMAZE THE WORLD 2,000 meters above sea level, and only 100 kilometers from the Black Sea coast, a new year-round resort is being developed by the Georgian government at Goderdzi pass. The first construction developer to step was the Alliance Group. Located in Georgia’s ‘Winter Wonderland’, the developer is building a 100-room Alliance Resort featuring the world-renowned Ramada Hotel brand, which is part of Ramada Worldwide, a global hotel chain operating 850 hotels in 67 countries. The Alliance Resort, also known as Ramada Ski Resort Goderdzi, is being built with high-end, ecologically safe materials, which makes it a luxury, energy-efficient project. As for the healthy environment and the breathtaking nature, the year-round resort has much to be proud of The mountains in Goderdzi are snow-covered from November to April, creating a fantastic setting throughout

all four seasons. Goderdzi ski resort, also known as the snowiest resort in Georgia (three times more snow depth then the Bakuriani and Gudauri ski resorts), is located in a unique climate zone within Adjara’s highlands. This is one of the places that Georgia’s fabled six millionth international visitor was taken to within the framework of the surprise welcome-tour hosted by Georgia’s Prime Minister. When it opens in 2018, the 6-story future-trend Alliance Resort will have the capacity to host 250 visitors at any one time. The Alliance Group will invest $10 million in the Alliance Resort project. Meanwhile, to make the mountain resort more easily accessible, both the Georgian and Adjarian governments are implementing a major highway improvement program, according to the Goderdzi Masterplan.
