ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project was funded by EU Erasmus +, Key Action 2 – Schools to Schools program. It involved schools from five different countries: 

Craigclowan Preparatory School, Perth, Scotland—Coordinator,

Scoala Gimnaziala Nr.14, Brasov, Romania – Partner

Istituto Comprensivo Verbania Pallanza, Italy – Partner,

Ecole Saint Victor, Paris, France,

Aristotelio College, Thessaloniki, Greece – Partner.

This project’s main focus was on inventors and inventions. It involved the research, design, production, presentation and evaluation of an invention idea. When pupils collaborate and work together, they have to learn to communicate their ideas, compromise and reach decisions. These are skills which are valuable throughout one's whole life. In addition to this we have become very much a "throwaway society". By taking ownership of their product from the initial design phase through to the final manufacturing of their product, pupils learned to appreciate what is involved in the production of any product, thereby fostering and understanding and appreciation of all products which we own. We hope that now this appreciation and understanding has been instilled, pupils will be much less likely to simply "throw away” their goods but will appreciate them for what they really are. This project fosters entrepreneurship, from an early age, and proposes the idea that any one has the capability of being an inventor. By carrying out such a project at your school you will inspire young people, to build on their sense of initiative and to show them that through team work, cooperation, hard work and good leadership, they can become the next generation of inventors. Through participating in such a project pupils will work towards becoming successful learners as they will need to be part of a team as well as taking on leadership roles. They are encouraged to be responsible citizens as questions around the environment and environmentally friendly materials and products arise. This project will assist them in becoming effective contributors as all pupils will be required to present their work at all stages of their project. Their confidence will increase as they become accustomed to presenting their work and discussing their rationale. Eureka! Past, Present and Future! was a two year project.

The first year was spent researching existing inventions and inventors from our own countries and sharing this information with our partner schools. The second year was the invention competition. This guide contains a plethora of worksheets, examples, useful contacts and advice. I hope that anyone undertaking such a project enjoys it as much as we all did. Trip to Brasov! March 5-11 2018

Monday 5th March

At last, after a long but well-planned journey we arrived at Brasov. It had been a very early start in Perth and two hours were 'lost' in the travelling. We were surprised to see the vast farmlands laid out either side of the road from Bucharest fringed with buildings some appearing to be abandoned, others brightly coloured in the western European tradition. We were soon up in the Carpathian Mountains surrounded by smart hotels obviously catering for the tourist. More and more towns appeared towards the end of the three hour coach trip. There were no villages. At the school Romanian parents waited for the children to whom they were to offer homestay. They were weary, a little nauseous because of the twisty roads but looking forward to presenting their projects.

What a warm welcome awaited us as we became reacquainted with partners and children we had first met a year ago at the start of the Erasmus project in Thessaloniki. The teachers found their accommodation, supper and a thoroughly good night's sleep in readiness for Tuesday at school.

Tuesday 6th March It was business today. The children from all five schools presented their winning invention. All of the explanation and description was managed very well in the common language. A tour of the school showed us the energy and noise attached to a school. Lunch in a nearby restaurant lasted until the teacher's meeting which was held back at the school. The children were collected from there by their homestay hosts. The meeting lasted until 5:30 and filled out the busy agenda satisfyingly well. Plans were made, actions endorsed. Overall then a day fulfilling the tasks set for pupils and teachers. With the business out of the way everyone can start to look forward to the programme of outings organised by our Romanian hosts.

Wednesday 7th March Peter, a Transylvanian guide set us within this areas historical context as we travelled through the hills and plains surrounding Brasov. It was an excellent exposition of the dangers facing this area as empires expanded from the east and west. We were looking at fortifications, citadels and later an entire city protected by walls and siege defences.

As these buildings sought the best viewpoints spectacular views as we followed Peter. He from his knowledge; too much detail to supply further study. We stopped first at Nurea moving on later to invading forces. Colour and human settlements visited the School on the Hill as it is known balcony on top of the tower in the centre of the

we were treated to energetic climbs and answered all our questions, we benefitted here but there are areas he pointed up for Sighisouara a city left untouched by made this city particularly attractive. We locally. There was another climb to a square. More panoramic views. By this time lunch was being supplied. A three course meal was served and

There was a bus trip from school to a walking tour of Brasov. Simona was our guide and explained the background to the city's development. We went to the central square where the medieval market operated, the Black Church and the first school in Romania in which we met a dedicated priest who opened up the school's valuable book collection and demonstrated an early printing press.

the base of the castle.

Friday was the last day for our joint venture with Greece, France, Romania and Italy. It was fun day and we were to visit a park devoted to the dinosaur. The Transylvanian highlight was a trip to Bran Castle. It was a change from the fortified castles we had seen although it afforded a great view of the surrounding countryside. Although it would have been a great place to live Glad the Impaler might have put off casual visitors! The children enjoyed shopping for trinkets in the market at

We were treated to lunch at a local pensione where traditional dishes were served. The children had an excellent opportunity to play outside once they were no longer thirsty and hungry.

Saturday 10th March A warm day for a street breakfast and ice creams flavoured with bubble gum and watermelon.

Children were looked after so well by host families, big brothers and fellow travellers on the bus to the ski slopes. Craigclowaners were visibly growing in confidence as they negotiated meeting places in a different town with a new language to interpret. One really remarkable difference in Brasov we noticed was the respect motorists have for the zebra crossing. Having arrived at Poiana the snow boards and skiis lined the route to the terminal.

Lunch went down well and sledges and 'doughnuts' entertained the children in the sun. The air was filled with the scent of caramelised sugar and we saw the 'chimney' cakes being made. Imagine a fat free doughnut. Travelling by bus involves ticket purchase and validation before entry. With a group it takes time. We were fortunate in having a bus ready at both ends of the journey up to the snow. The pick up from downtown was at five pm. Tomorrow we start back on the bus to Bucharest.

INFO DAYS ERASMUS - 14 OCTOBER 2018 This year, we took part in another Info-Days ERASMUS+ event. This time , we spoke about our trip to Scotland to our 4th grader students. The winners presented their inventions for the last time and spoke about their experience visiting a different country. Teachers Ionela Maciuca and Alexandra FejĂŠr talked about Craigclowan Preparatory School and how much they loved both the country and the people .

TRANSNATIONAL MEETING TO SCOTLAND After all the hard work during this third stage of the project, the Romanian team travelled full of enthusiasm and emotions to Scotland for the last meeting with teachers and students. Every one in the team was really nervous because we were there to represent our country and we had to present our work as inventors. The first day we visited the school , a beautiful school , the school of our dreams: big green spaces, beautiful classrooms with all the resources needed . Everything very organized and clean , perfect respectful students and welcoming teachers. We were impressed about “the forest school”, about the garden and the camping space , about their library…we were impressed about EVERYTHING! The most interesting moment of our trip was the Fair of Inventions at Royal George’s Hotel Ballroom. Every country had to prepare a stall presenting their inventions. We worked a lot at home doing our logos, flyers and posters, thinking about this important moment and we finally were there , preparing everything for the big moment we have been planning for 2 years. All the partners, students and teachers, were like the bees! The whole room was full of energy. Students were talking and arranging, teachers were organizing the event, everything was full of colours, with flags of the partners. We represented our country dressed in our national shirt named “ie”. The Mayor of the city and the headmaster honored us with their presence , teachers from Craigclowan School , parents, students, locals were there for meeting us, speaking to the children , asking them about their inventions or about our country.

Everything was so exciting! The city was so beautiful and the city tour was quite interesting! We loved very much the trip to Urquhart Castle , to Edinburg and to Scone Palace . We were so lucky to be the ones who have visited Scotland , Perth and to be part of something so beautiful as the Erasmus project Eureka! Past, present and future!

STREET FOOD AND HOUSE Niki Dimanopoulou, grade 3, fully developed her idea of bins that convert recyclable materials - glass, aluminum, plastic and metal - after recognizing the material and measuring its weight, into food and water for stray animals, while the back of the bin serves as a shelter for the small animals! Students actually constructed the robot in robotics workshops.

KIDS AMBULANCE George Felekis, grade 5, worked hard on the medical service of a small transportable hospital for children, which provides general and specialized pediatric services to people under 14. 'Always near you’, the ambulance is equipped with the latest technology medical systems! George has created the website for this service, social media and email accounts. URL : https://kidsambulance.wordpress.com/ E mail : ambulancekids@gmail.com Social Media: kidsambulance

ECO VILLAGE Anna-Maria Verviti, grade 5, impressed us with her excellent functional construction of the ecological village. She thought and built in detail, the prototype of an ideally sustainable ecological village, which is energy-independent and ecological. It does not waste energy or water, it recycles the rainwater, uses solar, wind and hydro power, cultivates its own products and raises livestock. It is a sustainable green village.

DRIVING WITH SAFETY Fay Cafe, grade 3, in collaboration with Matilda Konstantinidi, grade 4, worked enthusiastically on a mobile application idea DRIVING WITH SAFETY, which is connected to the car and when the accelerometre senses that the car is moving at a speed of more than 10 km per hour, will not answer calls, but it will send the caller the general message 'I cannot answer, I am driving', and also customised messages to selected contacts!

DRESS IT UP Ismini Lagoutari, Iliana Kyzaki, Christina Kefou and Ioanna Zedrou, grade 6, worked with cheerful feminine temperament on their invention, the wardrobe which arranges our clothes on the hangers after rejecting the wrinkled or dirty ones. A monitor shows the weather and the colours that are in fashion. There is also a remotely controllable wardrobe lift for those seated. The girls actually constructed the robot in robotics workshops.

It is a most beautiful inhabited medieval town in the heart of Transylvania, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. March 8: Day 4 The Erasmus team are guided round the picturesque town of Braşov, particularly to a celebrated Gothic site, Biserica Neagră (Black Church), originally dedicated to Saint Mary, which owes its current name to a fire that kept burning for days, Piata Sfatului (Council Square) and Strada Sforii (Rope Street), the narrowest street in Europe.

We visit the first Romanian school, Prima Scoală Românească, which is now a museum. Our teacher teaches us Georgraphy, History and Music in Anton Pann’s – the famous story-teller’s - classroom. Next to the museum there is Orthodox Biserica Sf. Nicolae (St. Nicholas Church), dating back to the 14th century.

Braşov, Transylvania, “Dracula’s” country

At Bran Castle, majestic castle on a hill in Transylvania, national monument and landmark of Romania. Known as the ‘Count Dracula’s Castle’, as reference to Bram Stoker’s fictional character, is in fact Vlad Dracula’s aka Vlad the Impaler’s castle, a most violent and ruthless tyrant. The view from the castle is breath-taking, the history overwhelming and the blood-thirsty Dracula… practically present!

March 9: Day 5 At Dino-Park we meet the dinosaurs and watch 9-D cinema!

The journey to the enchanting Transylvania of Romania, the medieval country of Dracula on the one hand, and the city with the Hollywood “Braşov” sign on the other, has come to an end, but the Erasmus journey continues… We are grateful to the Romanian families who were most hospitable, and of course our Romanian and rest of partners for this wonderful week! We’ll keep the memories in our heart! We hope to see you soon, friends!

Following the project Erasmus in St Victor: Romania trip : Nous avons présenté l'invention élue en anglais, le Yuriflow !

Gloup's

Holidays and and

invention stories...

Hello! My name is Gloups! I’ve been part of preschool class this year at Saint Victor school in Paris. As the mascotte of the class, I was telling kids stories about my holidays all year long. The first trip I told them about was in September when kids just started school. They all brought pictures and post cards of their own holidays so did I. They were a little bit shy and didn’t know how to present their holiday in front of the class. So I was the first to present my holiday in front of everybody.

I showed them a picture of myself at the balloon festival in Saint-Sylvèstre-sur-Lot in France. I told them about all the great things I did with my family. I explained what the balloon is made of and how it can fly. Then, I told them who invented it : Les frères Montgolfière. So the kids learned why we call it a montgolfière in French ! In February, we had two weeks holiday but I stayed a bit longer. I knew the kids would be wondering why I wasn’t at school so I sent them a postcard. My trip to Italy

and The Vatican was wonderful. I ate a lot of gelato ! I learned that the ice-cream cone - the corneto was invented by an Italian named Spica. What a cleaver invention ! I was happy to discover this and told everything about it to my classmates when I came back to class. For the Christmas holiday, I travelled to Scotland ! Once again we stayed longer in this beautiful country. As I was away, I couldn’t wish merry Christmas to my friends in France so I sent them a Christmas card. When I came back I showed them a picture of me in front of Edinburg castle. I also told them about a great Scottish inventor : Alexander Graham Bell. I showed them pictures the phone he invented and its evolution. They loved my presentation. During March holidays, I travelled to Greece! I had a very good time discovering the ruins of Olympia. I was very excited to explain everything to the kids I learned about this historic country and what the Greeks invented : the Olympic Games. The last holidays that I presented to the pupils was in Romania. Once again I had a lot to tell them... beginning with The castle of Dracula and the legend about this king. I also taught them about a Romanian invention : the fountain pen. I asked them to write their name with a real leaf and ink so they understood how practical the fountain pen invention was. They also wrote with a fountain pen and figured out what kind of pen they preferred : markers! Through all my presentations kids have learned about French, Italian, Scottish, Greek and Romanian inventors.

ITALY

After the first year of Invention researches, activities and trips here we are… the second year comes… And now WE are the real inventors! First dissemination: We are a big, big group made up of three classes working together, communicating, sharing methods, materials, ideas and collaboration. Our families have been very much involved in the project. At the beginning of the school year we first involved our families and local community in our project - Presenting our second year project to families in a school meeting; - Opening a whatsapp group and a mailing list of the families, some of them were available to help us and collaborate! - Publishing our plan on our Erasmus Corner in our school website http://www.scuolacadorna.altervista.org/ctmenu-item-7?layout=edit&id=36 - Involving the local print and media. Other dissemination events: - Local print articles - End of the year report to families 31st May at school from students to parents - 17th October 2018 Feedback report and presentation to parents, local community and media of the end and result of the project. - Mrs Arnaboldi, Laura’s mother helped students to open a blog for the project.

Step one: in each class group we started gathering basic ideas, in group works, to find the right invention, after a class competition and a school election.

After the selection of so many ideas we realized that our focus was on school, in

fact the best invention for us was a set of school tools made of a Multimedia desk, an original pencil case, a special school bag and an ergonomic chair.

And here the adventure starts! Off we go with schetches , design projects and the realization of our inventions! Parents help: Patrizia Nigro, an Architect, helped us designing and building our schoolbag, assembling and

sewing each part of the schoolbag! Together with Margherita Ruschetta they held a workshop with the students designing and decorating the pattern for the schoolbag cover!

The multimedia desk was realized following our basic project ‌ and it was accessorized by a beautiful and comfortable chair and by a special software planned by the students. It was created in two versions:

Home made version : the firm Equa system by Giulio Ciana with the artisan craftsman Primo Polato created the basic structure and the students painted and accessorized it with a solar power bank, a tablet, some ready made charts useful to help special needs students . The elegant version:The Engineer Fondello took inspiration from our project and created for us an elegant version which we love very much!

Our teacher Carmen Modaffari helped us with the difficult design and project of the pencilcase which was built by a craftsman Mr Braghiroli living in our town, and it was called Eurekadorna , the fusion of the name of our project and the name of our school !
