December 14 Issue

From the

Executive Director January 6, 2014 was my first day with Georgia Soccer. The cold days of November we are having reminds me of that very cold day in January. Since then, here are some of the things we recall from 2014: In February, Susanne Conlon was inducted into the Georgia Soccer Hall of Fame at the Georgia Soccer Annual General Meeting. Also in February, the US Women’s National Team played Russia at the Georgia Dome and Georgia Soccer conducted a fundraiser at the match that raised money for Soccer in the Streets. In March, Georgia made a statement about its interest in professional soccer when over 68,000 fans attended the sold out international match between Mexico and Nigeria! In April, Major League Soccer awarded Atlanta a MLS Franchise under owner Arthur Blank to begin play in 2017! ATL MLS hired their first Club President- Darren Eales from Tottenham Hotspurs. In May, Georgia Soccer teamed up with the NSCAA to offer NSCAA coaching courses in Georgia. Also in May, three Georgia Soccer players were selected to play on the U14 Boys U.S. National Team. In June, we celebrated the first World Cup in our time zone in a long time. Georgia Soccer members responded by inundating public viewing areas to watch the games. Georgia Soccer teamed up to support Atlanta Soccerfest which drew over18,000 people who had a great time playing and watching soccer all day!

In July, we turned our attention to youth soccer championships as six Georgia Soccer teams qualified for the US Youth National Championships. Congratulations to SSA, Concorde Fire, UFA, GSA (2), and Tophat for placing teams in the National Championship. The UFA U14 Boys and Concorde Fire U19 Boys won the National Championship! Twelve Georgia Soccer players were named to US Youth National Tournament ‘Best 11’ Squads. This summer, Boris Jerkunica, an owner of the Atlanta Silverbacks, and the Arthur Blank Family Foundation gave a grant to Georgia Soccer to create five soccer mini-pitches around the Atlanta metropolitan area. These mini-pitches are being built to encourage “pick up” soccer and provide a blueprint for communities to build mini-pitches at schools and communities as they do with basketball and tennis courts now. On November 24th, the first two soccer mini-pitches were completed at Bernard Halpern Park in Doraville, GA. If you have the chance, go out and play some soccer there! This fall, three Georgia Soccer players were named to the US U16 Boys national team and two Georgia Soccer players were named to the US U20 Men’s national team. On November 8th Georgia Soccer brought in US National team all-time leading goal scorer Abby Wambach, to Atlanta to raise funds to build more soccer mini-pitches. Abby had lunch, answered questions, and played with Georgia Soccer members who raised money to support this effort. I look forward to a great 2015!

Also in June, the Cobb United Women’s team finished second in the Amateur division of the USASA Women’s National Championships.

I expect game days for our new team in Atlanta to be colorful and festive events, with people from all over the state making the trip to the state capital to support the team.” In March 2017, the new Atlanta MLS team will host the first sporting event in the new state-of-the-art retractable roof stadium that will serve as home to the soccer club, the Atlanta Falcons and major sports and entertainment events. For MLS games, the stadium will feature a widened field and draped upper levels for a more intimate configuration. The venue will be located adjacent to multiple MARTA rapid-transit stations, providing easy access to soccer fans throughout the region. Since 2008, Major League Soccer, Arthur Blank and executives from the Atlanta Falcons and AMB Group, the parent company of the new MLS club and the Falcons, have been working closely to bring topflight soccer to Atlanta. The group’s work included visits to six MLS markets to discuss club business operations and tour stadiums, as well as discussions with another six MLS teams. December 14 Issue

Q & A Darren Eales How impressed have you been with the initial fan response to an MLS franchise here in Atlanta? Very impressed, it’s fantastic. We have over 5,500 Founding Members signed up for season tickets and we’re still 2 ½ years out from our first match. That’s a high marker and a good indication of the level of interest in the game here in Atlanta. The excitement is very encouraging, and now it’s our job is to build on that excitement as we take our next steps.

What role do you see the youth soccer community in Georgia playing with the new team? The youth soccer community will play an extremely important role as we build the MLS team and beyond. Georgia, and the Atlanta area in particular, is a hotbed of youth soccer. One of the first items on my agenda is to get out into the community and have a chat with key people in the youth soccer programs. We’re also beginning to think about the best model for our Academy program, and how we’ll continue to develop the impressive pool of talented players in this area. Player development is going to be key for us – finding the best way to develop such talent and then bridge the gap between youth soccer and professional soccer. Our ultimate goal is to build a strong and clear pathway so that local talent gets the best training and opportunities possible, and we can get more and more homegrown players into MLS Atlanta and the US National Team.

Do you have your eyes on any big player signings for 2017 yet? We have quite a ways to go before making those decisions, so I’m not committed to anyone yet. However, a number of players and agents contacted me as soon as it was announced that I had the job with MLS Atlanta and I was very pleased about the level of interest that was shown. Over the next two years we will be monitoring players all over the world, and constantly evaluating who would be the best fit as our team here at MLS Atlanta develops.

What caught your eye about the opportunity here in Atlanta? PAGE

10

There were several things that made this an opportunity that was too good to pass up. The outstanding reputation of the club owner, Arthur Blank, his history of running a first class organization (the NFL’s Atlanta

GEORGIA www.georgiasoccer.org

December 14 Issue

Falcons), and his commitment to the local community was definitely a factor. I was also intrigued and excited about the possibility of growing a team from scratch and being involved from the beginning stages.

Coming from a league as successful as the English Premier League, how do you feel about the direction and future of the MLS? The progression of MLS has been extremely positive. It’s grown dramatically over the past decade, faster than any other sport in America. MLS has laid a good foundation for future success with youth development programs and by supporting a solid fan culture. There is a lot of interest in Europe from players, coaches and executives about where MLS is going. I think it’s a great time to be here.

Fans are already speculating on the team's name. When do you expect to name the team and will the fans have a say in it? We’re kicking off a naming campaign very soon, over the next few months. Fans will be directly involved – we’ll take suggestions over social media and will be talking to supporters at community events. We want to have fun with it and keep our fans involved every step of the way.

Next steps? I’m eager to meet MLS Atlanta fans and supporters, get to know the local soccer community, kick off the naming campaign and officially name the team early next year. From there we’ll work on a club logo and kit and start to build a front office and coaching staff. With a few years to go before our first match, we have time to grow at a steady pace.

What are your expectations for a first-year team? Could playoffs be in the picture? Historically, it’s been difficult for a first-year expansion team to make the playoffs, but I don’t see any reason why we couldn’t do it. We’ve got great backing, what looks like it’s going to be a fantastic fan base and we want to be competitive from the outset.

The 2014-15 US Youth Soccer National League season has begun with games played for the Girls on November 20-23 in Wilson, NC. The Boys will kick off December 11-12 in North Carolina as well. After four days of play, the Girls have solidified their spots in the standings until they meet again in Orlando. The competition has been great and multiple teams are still very much alive for every division title. The National League features the top 160 teams in the U14-U18 Boys and Girls age groups. With 16 teams divided into two divisions per age group, each team has had to earn its place in the league through success in US Youth Soccer Regional Leagues and National Championship Series play. Teams automatically qualify for National League by finishing in the top two of their division in the previous year, winning their respective Regional league or by winning their respective Regional Championship. The National League provides a pathway for four teams per gender/age group to qualify for the US Youth Soccer National Championships, sending the top two finishers in each division of the u14 – u18 age groups to compete for the National Title. The four National League representatives will join the four Regional Champions at the 2015 National Championships in Tulsa, OK, July 21-26. The eighth year of the National League play is shaping up to be one of the most competitive yet. “In 2013-14 we had 54 National

League teams qualify for the National Championships, and five of a possible 10 titles were won by National League teams” said Paul Luchowski, National League Commissioner. The National League is an extension of the highly successful US Youth Soccer Regional Leagues. The League provides an avenue for teams to play in meaningful matches against top competition from across the country for continued development and opportunities for exposure at the national team, collegiate and professional levels. The National League will continue the season in December alongside the Disney Soccer Showcase in Orlando, FL, with the Boys playing December 27-29 and half of the Girls playing December 31-January 2 with the remaining girls playing in March in Las Vegas. GEORGIA SOCCER Visit from a Legend

A day with Abby Wambach Have you ever wanted to lace up and play alongside a World Cup legend? Thirty-seven lucky Georgia Soccer players had the chance to do just that with U.S. Soccer legend Abby Wambach...

O

n Saturday, November 8th, Abby Wambach, the all-time women’s international goal scoring leader, arrived in Atlanta for a full day of soccer with a select number of youth soccer players. These players earned a chance to play soccer with Abby by raising funds for the Georgia Soccer Mini Pitch program*. The day started with a few of

the highest fundraisers meeting Abby for a one on one meet and greet and autograph session. After every player had a chance to sit and talk to Abby, it was time to play some soccer. Wambach took the players through a few drills that she uses to hone her skills with the U.S. National team, including a private clinic with the three highest fundraisers, Allison Jones, Berkley Castleman, and Kate Shemwell. Once the training sessions were finished, the players then took a break to enjoy some lunch with Abby. The day wasn’t over yet, though, as there was more soccer to be played. Two soccer games capped off the event with each player getting the opportunity to play on the same team with Wambach. Two lucky girls even got the jerseys Abby wore during the games to take home.
