WELCOME TO…

THE FIRST EVER SOUTH & MID WALES CREATIVE ARTS WEEK!!

A very warm welcome to Creative Arts Week 2017, we are going to have a brilliant week together learning about how we can make a difference where we are in our daily lives…ON OUR FRONTLINES. Your FRONTLINE is the place where you spend the majority of your time outside the church, where you are in contact with non-Christians, where you are with people who need to know the love of God. We will be encouraged to grow our faith to allow us to worship God in all situations both as a gathered church community but also in our schools, colleges and at work. We pray that everyone will come away with tools and habits that will help us on our faith journey whichever stage we are currently at. Enjoy everything this week has to offer! Blessings, George Martin PS.PLEASE BRING THIS HANDBOOK WITH YOU CREATIVE ARTS WEEK 2017

THE VENUE St. Michael’s Centre is a beautiful venue with great facilities in the heart of Llandaff, which is easily accessible from the M4. The bedrooms are en-suite with a mix of twin and single occupancy. Food sounds like it’s going to be ideal with a COOKED BREAKFAST every morning followed by a light lunch such as soup & a sandwich, with 2 courses for our evening meal. They are also providing packed lunches for the 2 days that we head off-site for activities at Cardiff Bay.

THINGS TO KNOW EXPECTATIONS We have a strong team of experienced staff who are there to ensure that the young people have a great week. They are there to ensure everyone gets the most out of the week both in enjoyment and in spiritual growth. This may mean that they have to ‘draw the line’ regarding behaviour. During camp we expect everyone to adhere to the Salvation Army policies on no alcohol, drugs and smoking during the camp. There will be no warnings for misconduct in these areas and may result in an early trip home. MOBILE PHONES We accept that mobile phones are a part of everyday life, and we want to encourage the use of them during worship and small groups. We do however ask that young people respect leaders in the use of their mobiles so as not to disrupt sessions and leaders may ask the young people to put them away or switch them off. CASH & VALUABLES Whilst there will be a tuck shop on site, young people should not need a lot of extra cash. Cash can be handed in at registration to set up a tab and any funds not used returned at the end of camp. We cannot accept any responsibility for money or other valuables that are not deposited with us. Valuable electrical items such as iPads should be left at home. The Salvation Army does not take responsibility for damages to such items. MEDICATION All medication should be handed to Kim Wilson (Medical Officer) at registration During registration please be prepared to inform Kim of any updates that are required to your Medical Consent Form. Please make sure details of any allergies or special dietary requirements are listed on your Medical Consent Form. EXAM RESULTS If a young person receiving exam results during the camp would like to go home to collect them, then please complete the Exam Results Consent Form enclosed detailing time of departure and return. FORMS TO RETURN Please can you return the following forms ASAP: MEDICAL CONSENT FORM CODE OF CONDUCT FORM ACTIVITY CONSENT FORMS CARDIFF INTERNATIONAL WHITE WATER CONSENT FORM (Pink sheet) EXAM RESULTS CONSENT FORM (If required) COMMUNICATION CONSENT FORMS

The young people will do this in their small groups throughout the week with a prize for the overall winning team.

HOT TOPICS Monday evening we will be taking the opportunity to talk about topics that statistically the young people want to talk about. The sessions will be split Boys/Girls and the young people will choose 2 topics from sessions:   

COUNTER-BULLYING POLICY FOR YOUNG PEOPLE & STAFF STATEMENT OF INTENT We are committed to providing a caring, friendly and safe environment for all of our young people and staff so they can develop in a relaxed and secure atmosphere. Bullying of any kind is unacceptable at Summer School. We operate a zero tolerance to bullying—immediate action will result if anyone causes physical, emotional or psychological distress to another member of Summer School. If bullying does occur, all young people and staff should be able to tell and know that incidents will be dealt with promptly and effectively. This means that anyone who knows that bullying is happening is expected to tell the staff. WHAT IS BULLYING Bullying is the use of aggression with the intention of hurting another person. Young people can bully each other, be bullied by adults and can sometimes bully adults. Any form of bullying results in pain and distress to the victim. Some common forms of bullying can be: Emotional - being unfriendly, excluding, tormenting, graffiti, gestures, racial taunts Physical - pushing, kicking, hitting, punching or any use of violence Verbal - name-calling, sarcasm, spreading rumours, teasing including via emails or text messaging Sexual - unwanted physical contact or sexually abusive comments Racial - any of the above because of, or focusing on the issue of racial differences Homophobic - any of the above because of, or focusing on the issue of sexual orientation Unofficial Activities such as pillow fights, initiation ceremonies and practical jokes may cause individual students physical or emotional hurt even though this outcome is not intended. Additionally, such activities may be used vicariously by some individuals to bully other students. WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO RESPOND TO BULLYING? Bullying hurts. No one deserves to be a victim of bullying, whether a child or an adult. Everybody has the right to be treated with respect. The young person being bullied needs protection. The young person who is bullying needs help to understand why they are behaving as they are and how they can relate to others in more positive ways. We have a responsibility to respond promptly and effectively to issues of bullying. OBJECTIVE OF THIS POLICY  All adults involved in camp as well as children and young people should have an understanding of what bullying is.  All adults involved in camp must know what the policy is on bullying, and follow it when bullying is reported.  All young people and parents should know what the policy is on bullying, and what they should do if bullying arises.  Young people and parents should be assured that they will be supported when bullying is reported.  Bullying will not be tolerated. SIGNS AND SUMPTOMS A young person may indicate by signs or behaviour that he or she is being bullied. Adults should be aware of these possible signs and should consider the possibility that the young person may be being bullied. Further information can be obtained from Kidscape (for free booklets “Stop Bullying”, “Preventing Bullying” and “You Can Beat Bullying”, send a large (A4) self-addressed envelope with two 1st class stamps to: Kidscape, 2 Grosvenor Gardens, London, SW1W 0DH).

PREVENTION Strategies can be adopted to prevent bullying. As and when appropriate, these may include:  Writing a set of group rules  Signing a behaviour contract  Having discussions about bullying and why it matters PROCEDURES 1. Report bullying incident to staff 2. Ensure that details are carefully checked before action is taken 3. In all cases of bullying, the incidents will be recorded by staff 4. The parents of the bully and the bullied should be informed 5. If it is thought that an offence has been committed, contact the police 6. The bullying behaviour or threats of bullying must be investigated and all bullying stopped quickly 7. An attempt will be made to help the bullies change their behaviour OUTCOMES 1. The member of staff involved in dealing with the incident should issue a warning to the young person concerned 2. An apology should be given by the young person who has bullied another 3. If possible, the young people will be reconciled 4. After the incident has been investigated and dealt with, each case will be monitored to ensure repeated bullying does not take place. Depending on the seriousness of the bullying – if necessary the young person will be sent home straight away, with appropriate support. 5. Make it clear that a second warning will be issued if they bully the same or another person 6. If a second incident is reported, the director should issue a warning, unless it is serious enough to warrant sending home straight away 7. After a third incident, the young person should be sent home, with appropriate support 8. After the incident/incidents have been investigated parents/ carers should be informed of the action taken 9. All incidents will be recorded in the director's report and their line manager informed. OVERALL AIM OF ANY ACTION  To protect the child or young person who is being bullied.  To help the bully stop their behaviour and begin to understand and change the way they behave towards other people.
