Assisted and published book <USC Apartment for Life> Analyzed and did research on Housing for Senior Living I assisted my Studio Professor making a 60-page publication which focused on the evolution of “Housing for Aging” in United States. Besides, the book is also a portfolio for 2013 Spring Studio Work, in which I got the first prize among all 10 projects. During the two-month work, I put together all the students’ works, did the 3D-Printing models and all the layouts design.

Assisted on Documentary Film <Face of a Nation> for USC School of Architecture Graphic Design and Script Editing The film is aimed to recall American’ s attention of the way they show to the rest of the world. Since I was once the volunteer at 2010 Shanghai Expo, I assisted Professor Chow analyzing the effect of U.S. Pavilion in the exhibition; we compared it with what in the past few years and interviewed architects and professors for a deep understanding. During the process, I helped search previous Expo Information and Graphic Design on the image resources.

Concept design, plan drawing, construction drawing Preparation for Project Presentation During my 6-month Internship in M.A.O., I assisted several senior designers with projects in different design periods, which involve Concept Design Research, Schematic Design, Construction drawings. Both physical models and computer renderings were done during the internship. I was also in charge of a video made for one of the projects and contacted with companies doing post-processing.

Urban Planning Design Assistance, Plan Drawings, Renderings Preparation for Project Management & Project Presentation My two-month internship in Zhijing Design & Architectural Office was very helpful in the way that it taught me plenty of knowledge in urban planning, which was not my main study field in my undergraduate study. Also, I went to construction sites with the company ’ s senior designers and learned practical experience which would be helpful in my future design.

This project is an Innovation Hub for start-up technology businesses. As part of the Los Angeles Mayor’s Council on Innovation and Industry, the currently revitalizing Expo Line corridor has been branded ‘(t)expo.’ The program consists of several ‘pods’ that can be occupied by variously-sized businesses in a building of about 15,000 s.f. •

Spring 2013

The studio is designed to link the Senior Housing with Campus Resources in USC. My big idea of the design is to building up the bridge between the USC campus and the senior apartments by offering different open space and public activities. My project was awarded the best project in our class at the end of the semester. • Sustainable Design----Strategy for Rising Sea Level

Considering the challenges brought by increasing Sea Level, the studio was aimed to seek for a solution on a specific site. Instead of building static buildings as a dam to work against the currents, I tried to solve the problem in a more positive way----building up an Eco-Net.

Project Description Our site, several miles west of USC, lies at the western end of a thin strip of light-industrial buildings that adjoin the former freight railroad line. site

Located where the Expo Line and Jefferson Boulevard split/merge (at Redondo Boulevard), this challenging parcel will become a gateway to the area and a test case for future development.

• The program will consist of several ‘pods’ that can be occupied by variously-sized businesses in a building of about 15,000 s.f.

• The project uses a corridor to organize the whole working and sharing space, makes the functions well-connected with each other. • Besides, there is a combination between spaces of different sizes, which provides more possibilities.

ACOUSTIC CONSIDERATION [DESIGN DIFFERENTLY IN SOUTH & NORTH] • The project dealt the acoustic problems by using different facade materials. • The south facade utilizes more solid FRP panels to help reduce the influence of noises, and also helps decrease glaring problems. • The view of the Hollywood Hill is a cultural and visual element

NATURAL ILLUMINATION STRATEGY [SKYLIGHT AND CORRIDOR-BASED SIDE LIGHT] • Although facilitated with skylight in the atrium, artificial illumination is needed in the spaces that are far away from the center. • For pods that are facing the corridor and don’t have bigh openings to the outside, artificial illmination will be supplied to meet their needs.

LANDSCAPE & SUSTAINABILITY [COURTYARD DESIGN+FACADE MATIERIL SELECTION] • The Open Corridor will bring more fresh air to the space instead of common air-conditioned rooms. • The Courtyards inserted in the project helps connect it to the natural elements and adds more exterior spaces.

• The Channel Glass set on the facade can help solve the acoustic problems and add more privacy to the pods’ spaces.

INFLUENCE OF CONTEXT [START BY CAREFUL ANALYSIS OF SITE] • Expo Line is a very important context because the design should take the view from the passengers inside into consideration. • The Jefferson Boulevard along the site may be taken into careful consideration for dealing with the accessibility and circulation.

DESIGN PROGRAM ANALYSIS [GENERAL PROGRAM RELATIONSHIP] • The program will consist of several ‘pods’ that can be occupied by variously-sized businesses in a building of about 15,000 s.f. • Use 2 STANDARDs to define the space characters of the Incubator Pods----SCALE and CHARACTER. • The Open Corridor is good for natural ventilation which helps boost the the air flow. • The FRP Panels set on the north facade can be utilized as shading for the building as well, which helps solve the glaring problem.

• Corridor Space Perspective The corridor space provide people there a space to show themselves.

• Second Floor Deck Perspective The corridor is a space for staff to communicate, exchange opinions, gather together, etc. Also, the space can be used to have big events .

Material Consideration II • Glaring Consideration Another consideration towards the whole building envelop system is the influence from the sustainability of the surroundings. • Roof Treatment As to the roof treatment, I chose to use mesh screen first and decided to use PV panels instead after discussing with the professors.

Project Description

Project Location: On USC Campus, Northwest Corner of USC Project Type: 60-Unit Apartment + Emeriti Center Tutor: Victor Regnier, Professor of Univerisity of Southern California

Given the long tradition of retired faculty participation on campus and the opportunity available to expand this program of motivated volunteers, it made enormous sense to explore a new purpose-built set-ting.

One promising possibility was to expand lectures given by retired faculty and staff to a range of community organizations.

At the first stage of the design, we started from site visiting and several interviews to help form the basic frame of the project, which covers its site elements, clients' requirements and discover both chances and challenges.

Acoustics Design Strategy & Psychological Effect Actually, trees cannot block noises from the street, but people feel quieter when sitting under the trees and it’s sustainable

Sustainable Design Strategy I---Use West Breeze The breeze from the west orientation of the project can help improve the quality of the inner courtyard.

Sustainable Design Strategy II---Green Roof Green roof and vertical plants can help generate a secondary natural system for the project and green roof can also create a better view.

Process 3 -----[Floor Plans] Function Analysis + Arrangements

Entrance of Jefferson Blvd. & Vermont The project has the charactor that is located at the corner of the campus, and it is also sitting at the intersection of Jefferson Blvd. & Vermont Ave.

Courtyard Between Auditorium & CE Office The courtyard can be used as the waiting place for the visitors to the auditorium. Also, it can be used by elderly people and campus students

Classroom of Civic Engagement Different materials are used to design the civic engagement part. Considering there will be glazing at the west and south orientation, bricks are used to help block the sunshine.

Process 4 -----[Interior Design] 4 Types of Units

Unit Distribution

Combination of Analysis for 65+ and Social Idea Consideration This step includes the types of units, the choice of the materials for residential part and the sharing place design.

The diagram on the left shows the distribution of the units.

Each unit type has its own charactor and can be applied to people of different demands.

The 4 types of units are arranged according to the ratio of each block as well as the orientation.

In this step, circulation problems are studied and are solved with separate transportation.

At the same time, the units take much consideration of the fluence of circulation. Also, the units want tot create more public spaces for the residents in their spare time.

Comparison the strength and weak points of each unit type and give some possible solutions for future consideration. Analyze the public area of each unit type.

People who live alone or couple with few visitors.

There are altogether 4 types of units in the project. Each type shares some similarities and also have different charactors according to the needs of elderly people. The 4 types have different areas and therefore are applied to people of different living status. Some are situable for single senior people, some are situable for couples, and others are situable for people have regular visitors or friends.

The unit is located in high position and is good for people who want to have a good view of Downtown LA.

The units on the top 3 floors are slightly different from the others for the circulation consideration. There are different orientations towards outside, which creates more flexibility for residents when choosing their own units. For instance, introvert people may choose units with one side open while outgoing residents may take the 3-side open ones.

The unit is good for couples or people with a few friends and are likely to stay overnight.

People who live alone or couple with few visitors. The unit is located in middle position and is good for people who want to have easy access to the community club.

The unit is located in high position and is good for people to have a good view.

Visual Contact

There is shared space between the two units.

In every single floor, clear corridors help shape the route for the elderly.

Most of the levels have spaces that can be connected to upper or lower floors.

Therefore, it is easy for residents to start a conversation when they come back home or leaving in the morning.

By walking through the corridor, they’re likely to meet thier neighbors and learn to know each other more.

This helps make interesting visual contact between each other.

Scissors stairs can also make the spce of units become more compact and help save more area.

F8 The main elevator goes all the way to the 9th floor---the community club floor. After that, people are separated into two single elevators.

Public Patios

Community club is set in the middle position.

Some units are exposed to public for more than one side.

Some floors have easy access to the outside patios.

This will create better views for people towards the downtown view.

This makes elderly people feel close to nature and have more chances to communicate.

This will make convenience to residents in upper and lower floors. It’ll also increases more chances to meet.

F7 Residents can have a lot of activities in the public floor. For instance, it’ll be good to have a nice view towards downtown LA while doing exercises in the gym.

From the Structural Aspect---- Braced Frame as Structural Elements From the Sustainable Aspect----- Glazing Problem Big glass windows will inevitably cause light pollution and the glazing problem is also a big issue. Therefore, a few strategies may be considered to solve the problem and still keep an elegant facade.

All the units are open to public and generate a few interesting patios.

Project Description As one of the centers in the Baoshan District, the site is located in Da Chang Town and it needs to build a new community to meet the needs of the residents there. Since there are fine scenaries and landscape in the area, the design is considered to take the advantage of the natural resources by providing residents with wonderful scenaries.

Project Description The site is located at the place where there are several industrial factories that have been remained since 1950s. The site is unique because the hills and rivers there create a few palatable ecological systems. The project is aimed to strike a balance between environment and local life styles, and create a space for reading.

Project Description The site is located at Dongtan, Chongming Island, which is near one of the most modern city in China---Shanghai.
