ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN JOURNAL: SELECTION OF PROJECTS 2021

GERARDO MENDOZA ARCHITECT

“Be amazed of the enormity of the possible.” JAAR, MIAM 2015

DESIGN COASTER: THRILLING ARCHITECTURE. The design invested in a project comes from a mixture of professional knowledge gained through experience and study, but it is also poured in it a part of emotion generated by the implicit human sensory nature, which also, it is it’s own nature to simply react. High or low, but still an emotion over the project. Milano, IT. 2021 This projects journal has been fully designed by the architect Gerardo Mendoza. The projects shown here are examples of collaborative and individual work. Thanks for reading.

¡HOLA! Milano, Italia

I’m a graduated architect born in Mexico City, currently I am living in Milan after finishing the Master degree under the program of Architecture-Built Environment-Interiors at Politecnico di Milano. As a professional architect I’m in love with ‘simplist’ lines but looking always to break the monothony of space. I seek new ways of inspiration that help me to explode my creativity in order to take it beyond the conventional but always with the feet on the ground. I am passionate about everything I get involved in. I love to travel and have fun gaining new experiences. I am a dreamer and I like to pursue new goals along my life. “Be afraid of the enormity of the possible”.

(Jaar, Miami 2015)

SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND PERFORMING CENTER Como, IT 2020

MSc Thesis Project - Politecnico di Milano Macchina is born from the premise of implementing a versatile and physically adaptable architecture that is therefore helpful to meet the needs of a real situation implemented within an existing building which by itself consists of its own historical character of high degree of importance in the city. Macchina is a project inserted in an existing building, the Politeama Auditorium at Como, Italy where the fusion is not only physical but also programmatical in order to reinforce an existing identity. The project covers three architectural scales (urban, architectonic and interior) resulting a complete design network. Macchina is a project with a background that involves various theories of architecture which throw the beginnings of a concept of architecture in motion. The project invites us to explore and live the fusion of the historical identity of a building with a physical and programmatic flexibility of a new architectural project.

High-end residential & hospitality

The project is focused as part of the natural environment, mimicking nature and within the immediate surrounding context. It is a space interned in the vegetation that provokes the contemplation of the same natural way thanks to the framing of specific views in each area, its non-invasive functional distribution and the use of the own materials of the region. Each department, called a villa, is unique in essence. Functionality predominates in the interior while it is linked one hundred percent with the natural context to the outside.

CASA CUMBRES PRIVATE HOUSE Mexico City 2018

Architectural design Interior design Bespoke furniture design 3D Revit detailed modelling BIM modelling Architectural and executive project Preliminar renderings

High-end residential

The challenge in this project was to adapt an existing construction to the needs of the client, who asked for a partial remodeling in the house besides making an extension in the second level where a new gym and office would be located. It was implemented that this new architectural element would break with the existing aesthetic and together with the redesign of finishes and materials would give a better personality to the house but without being too protagonist since it was intended to partially respect the original architecture. It was included the full project of finishes, interior enlargement of three areas (TV room, secondary room and master room), extension in roof level, lighting, security and sound system by scenes, radiant floor and landscape design.

CASA CUMBRES HIGH-END RESIDENTIAL

The house was almost fully completed except fot the placement of finishes. There were some specific requirements by the client such as some extensions along the house.

Unification of main facade with marble. Placement of louvers in existing window to generate privacy and regulate the entrance of sunlight. Renovation of windows by placing a flap to allow ventilation.

The extension on the second level was intended to break the main aesthetic of the house with a more simplist shape and materials but without being too competitive with the existing architecture.

A pergola was added for design and to protect the cars from the sun. in addition, a water feature was added as a visual element in front of the roofless parking and main window.

The extension was created to include an office on the front part and a gym on the back part of the house taking advantage of the privacy and views.

High-end residential

The site of the project is immerse in the woods of Valle de Bravo, a City near Mexico City. The landscape and dimensions of it gave the opportunity to locate the main house in the highest point taking advantage of the openess of the site. On it’s back, the woods, which host the separated art studio properly immerse into the nature next to a naturally created water-recycle pond. The project was fulfilling the high standards of the client over the architectural program: Outdoor fire-pit, studio, living room, open kitchen, swimming pool, five in-suite bedrooms and a master bedroom. As an addition a property-keeper house was added following the design premises plus a running track creating a natural path all around the property.

The typography of the lot was the main design axis, since it’s shape was not orthogonal, located in corner and with a slight natural slope. So it was decided to maintain the natural shape of the terrain by adapting the architecture within the surroundings. The back of the property has a privileged view towards a river and this is how the architectural concept begun to take form: adapt to the proper climate orientations taking advantage of the views over the river. From the general architecture all the way to the interiors, the details were carefully chosen by selecting specific finishes and designing the precise furniture for the house.

Restaurant

Project and construction for the first redesigned set for the restaurant chain of Argentinian food “Barrio Gaucho”. The challenge was to introduce a new identity based on the authenticity of a “barrio gaucho” or “gaucho ranch” where the election of materials was precise in order to fulfill the abstraction of the concept. Moreover a graphic and architectural re-branding was made where patterns and texture were involved with a unique design exclusively for the restaurant. The decor lighting was important because it was integrated into the “gaucho” concept. Every element of the design will serve as a manual for every local for this firm of restaurants.
