Facing the city’s most important road axis, the “Avenida Constitución”, the first goal of our proposal is to create a real “city connection” by creating a mixed use street facing and integrating spatially and socially the historical “mirador” neighbourhood.
Regarding the high rise tower, the 280 m structure rises as an urban landmark with slim and elegant proportions and with totally column-free floor plans that efficiently adjust to the different project uses (residential, offices, hotel).
The tower also presents as a very special feature an innovative “vertical park” area; a glazed and steel structure filled with trees and vegetation, that in addition to its contribution to the structural stability / rigidity of the building, and where all technical and service areas are located, it mainly offers impressive outdoor confortable support spaces (swimming pools, lounges and meeting rooms) that rise throughout the hole building and culminate in a landmark public observation deck with restaurants and banquet facilities with remarkable 360º views of the city.

The city of Metz and its strategic position in the heart of E u ro p e , w a s c h o s e n t o h o s t t h e fi r s t l a rg e decentralisation project of a major European cultural institution, and Shigeru Ban and his French associate Jean de Gastines won the international competition to design and develop this important cultural building.
The most significant feature of this design is the impressive roof structure in laminated timber that covers the main interior spaces and also extends in cantilever towards the outdoor space with the idea of “erasing” the limits between the museum spaces and the urban public space around.
Three individual exhibition “tubes” of 90 m long by 15 m wide, are superposed around a steel hexagonal tower, and pierce through the roof structure, oriented strategically towards symbolic places in the city like the great historic gothic cathedral.
My role as project director was particularly interesting mainly considering the great technical complexity of the building and the innovative solutions that were needed in all phases to successfully achieve a truly groundbreaking concept.

Renzo Piano Building Workshop: Design Architect
proArchitecture (Gerardo Pérez): Project architect
In the traditional « Wilshire Boulevard » in Los Angeles, the prestigious LACMA museum developed an ambitious renovation project. The RPBW (Renzo Piano Building Workshop) was selected to design the project’s masterplan as well as that of the new BCAM (Broad Contemporary Art Museum) on this same site. This new project will house in more than 70000 ft², the most significant pieces of the prestigious contemporary art collection of the Broad Foundation.
In Piano’s strategy for the master plan development, the main objective is a very strong relationship between the visitor and nature. This idea becomes particularly interesting if we consider the fact that the old parking structure (three levels) in the north part of the project, will be replaced by an underground garage and the museum buildings will now all be in direct contact with a great park and outdoor area, which has an even greater value in this case, taking in consideration the exceptional weather in Los Angeles.
Personally, I was responsible for the technical and architectural development of the natural light system for the new BCAM building. With the engineering team of ARUP London (for lighting studies) and Los Angeles (for the structure), we developed a solution for a roof that will fully protect the works of art, while allowing natural daylight to illuminate the exhibition spaces. The technical complexity as well as the architectural and spatial qualities of the system made of this space one the most important and valuable highlights of the new LACMA museum.

proArchitecture (Gerardo PĂŠrez): Project Design director
In the context of the very ambitious project of the new metro network for Jeddah, our client has the intention of creating a large urban mixed use project with the company headquarters, a luxury shopping center with an exclusive hotel and notably the main metro station, called to become a new city icon and the symbol of the entire network. AREP was appointed to develop the project and I was responsible for the design and the direction of the team that delivered the design&build tender documents.
From an urban standpoint, our proposal consists in creating a network of open public circulations, protected from the extreme weather by an impressive undulated roof, under which all the buildings are organised around a grand public plaza. For these open spaces, we integrated an innovative passive climate control system, that combines solar protection from the translucent roof with the cooling from the extraction of the HVAC systems of the individual buildings. The other key feature of the project is the main metro station, located underground to allow continuity for the public circulations above, but open towards a remarkable garden and entirely glazed to create a real connection between the grand plaza and the trains that are finally the symbol of this notable urban landmark.

From an architectural point of view, one of the main features of the project is the main structural system entirely designed on timber that, other it’s innovative character from a technical and environmental standpoint, gives the building a unique appearance from the inside space as well as from the city around. In order to reinforce this idea the building skin is entirely glazed while special attention was given to achieve the low energy transmission levels that respond to the very strict Swiss regulations in terms of energy consumption.
Facing the city, the building also features an “intermediate” space throughout the whole height of the façade that, other its role as a “thermal screen," also creates a unique spatial experience with lounge/meeting areas and vertical links between the different office stories. These areas also have the particularity of having an innovative façade of glass retractable window shutters that allow to “transform” these spaces into open air terraces.

In the beautiful 560 hectares inhabited island of Dellis Cay, 5 great figures of internacional architecture were invited to develop an ambitious luxury hotel project, and Shigeru Ban was appointed to design 15 luxury villas in the South beach area. Our proposal takes advantage of its seaside location by proposing properties that are mainly divided into a “main villa" located on the beach (two different types) and an additional “floating House” totally surrounded by water and linked to the beach by a light and discreet floating deck.
In the first villa type the layout is organised and arranged around a double height fully openable living space that faces two linear water planes giving the impression of a floating space over a water line that passes under the house on its way to the ocean. The second type organises all spaces along a curvilinear path, created through thin L-shape timber elements, that ends in a grand living space that opens up completely to the ocean view. In the Floating House, an impressive curved roof cantilevers over the façade giving shade to the interior spaces and framing the Sea views that entirely surround the house. Furthermore, the façade is a clever retractable glass shutter system that disappears in the roof and allows the house to be partially or totally open to the ocean landscape.

proArchitecture (Gerardo Pérez): Project Design Director
In an exercise of research and experimentation to find high-performance alternatives to traditional construction systems (often insufficient in extreme conditions), our design is a fully prefabricated modular house that can be disassembled, relocated and transformed based on a bolted-connection laminated timber primary structure. The main envelope for this entirely renewable structure is an insulated double-layer concrete facade system, with a self-shading algorithmic pattern that adapts to the project’s orientation and significantly increases its thermal performance. Additionally, the overall 100% dry assembling process will drastically reduce construction time (65%) in comparison to traditional on-site methods.
Spatially the main particularity of the design is the noble double-height living space around which, all spaces are organised and that fully opens up to the garden and pool area through a clever large-format multiple-rail sliding door facade system with the highest performance standards.
