Ambler Metals Statement on the Federal Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the Ambler Access Project **Ambler Metals CEO Ramzi Fawaz: “This project has been unnecessarily bogged down in federal bureaucracy for years and I urge the Department of the Interior to avoid any further delays in the review process.”* * **Fred Sun, Tribal President for Native Village of Shungnak: “This road will also bring high-paying jobs that will help us retain talent and keep tribal members and their families in our communities.”** October 17, 2023 - (Anchorage, Alaska) - Amber Metals released the following statement after the federal Bureau of Land Management published a draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the Ambler Access Project: “Ambler Metals will diligently review this report over the coming weeks. The Department of Interior has expanded the scope of the Supplemental EIS well beyond its remand, however we and our partners are confident we can address any issues raised,” said Ramzi Fawaz, President and CEO of Ambler Metals. “The Ambler Access Project was authorized in federal law more than 40 years ago and has support across Alaska and within the region. However, this project has been unnecessarily bogged down in federal bureaucracy for years and I urge the Department of the Interior to avoid any further delays in the review process. Sixty days is a sufficient comment period, particularly considering the ample opportunity for public comment throughout the eight years that the project has been in permitting.” “This project is urgent, as it provides access to many mineral deposits across the region. Mining is critical for U.S. national security, reaching decarbonization targets, implementation of existing climate laws, and to build a stronger economy
~2~ in rural Alaska. We look forward to constructive discussion with all stakeholders along the proposed road corridor during the DSEIS comment period.” “Policymakers should listen to the voices of the people who have lived on these lands and stewarded Alaska for decades,” said Fred Sun, Tribal President for Native Village of Shungnak. “The Ambler Access Project can responsibly co-exist with the subsistence needs of our families and communities in the region. This road will be closed to the general public, which will minimize traffic and prevent unauthorized hunters on our lands; this will help conserve the caribou, moose, sheep, fish, and other wildlife populations.” “The road has the potential to bring our communities access to more affordable goods, fuel, and housing. And our people will benefit from high-paying jobs right here in our region, which will allow families to remain in our communities and afford the supplies needed to continue our subsistence way of life,” added Sun. The Ambler Access Project is a proposed 211-mile controlled industrial access road that will provide surface transportation access from the Dalton Highway to the Ambler Mining District in northwestern Alaska. The AAP will allow for exploration and development of mineral deposits in the Ambler Mining District, including vast quantities of copper, zinc, cobalt, and other critical minerals that are essential for clean energy technologies. This road will be closed to the public and accessible only by authorized industrial users that pay an access toll. Access to the Ambler Mining District for resource development is guaranteed in Section 201(4) of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, signed into law by President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Without this road, the mineral assets in the region will be stranded, depriving local residents of the economic opportunities associated with the project and denying the United States a domestic source of minerals needed for economic and national security.
