Shadow and Nuance
“
What I can see and am smitten by is a cool, square depth of shadow and nuance fixed for an instant, an age.
”
From Photography a poem in the collection The Late Sun by Christopher Reid.
These photographs were taken at parish churches in Sonning, Shottesbrooke, Southwold and Blythburgh in October and November 2021, late in the year and late in the day. The light shown in these pictures was not intended by the designers of these buildings. It is the result of the systematic destruction of the medieval glazing that would originally have filled these windows and the paintings that would have covered these walls. It is also the consequence of choices made by subsequent users of the building. They have adapted the building to suit their own needs, culture and beliefs. For me, architecture is not the exclusive perserve of the architect as author and artist. It is also created by those of us who use the building, read, re-interpret, and see layers of history and meaning in them.
