Yongding North Shore Park

These graphics shown are ones that I helped on during the design phase of this project. I helped set up the site analysis and concepts in Illustrator and helped in rendering the final product. The sections shown are two of the sections I did, one viewing across the park and another view from the river. I also helped with Photoshop work and putting together presentations to show the client.

Ocala to Matanzas Greenway

In the mid-20th century there was a plan to cut a barge canal across North Florida from the Withlacoochee River, through Marion County, and into the St. Johns River via the Ocklawaha. It would have been extremely detrimental to the environment but thanks to some great crusading by environmentalists they were able to convince the government to protect the land and thus the Cross Florida Greenway was born. The Cross Florida Greenway has a mixture of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails some of which, like the Santos bike trails, are quite famous. An added bonus is that this has protected some of the only green space cutting continuously through Ocala allowing for an East to West flow of wildlife to and from the Ocala National Forest. Located in North East Florida the site I chose is just on the other side of the St Johns River from the Cross Florida Greenway. The town of Satsuma is the closest residential area but is surrounded by quite well preserved wilderness. The corridor would connect from Matanzas State Forest near the Atlantic Ocean to the Seven Sisters islands along the St Johns River. My area of focus is on the western edge of the corridor where there is the most activity and access nodes as well as being in the most danger of habitat loss due to development.

Site Analysis Showing the interaction between built areas and natural.

Showing the distance between the three nodes around the city of Satsuma with the proposed flow of my project’s greenway.

The cross Florida Greenway ends on the west side of the St. Johns River at the most narrow portion of the river. The main species that uses that as a crossing is the Florida Black bear which is one of the larger mammals of Florida. As many large mammals across America it is in danger of having its breeding populations cut off from each other by habitat fragmentation. Between the St. Johns and the Atlantic Ocean there is an existing corridor for wildlife to use but the end points are in danger of being developed and cutting off the populations. By continuing the idea of the Cross Florida Greenway across the river you are able to preserve those vital endpoints before they are developed.

Seven Sisters Islands

Murphy’s Creek

Seven Sisters Islands is the first location along the proposed Greenway as it is the furthest west and has that critical portion of shoreline that allows for animals to cross the St Johns River. Being along a failed development site it has many existing dirt roads that can be re-purposed into an off road biking experience. The main entrance will be a staging ground for bicyclists with repair stations and pumps along with a picnic area modeled after the native American villages that used to dot the area.

Murphy Creek is just on the other side of a railroad from Seven Sisters and has already existing hiking trails. The current entrance is quite hidden though so not many people know about it or how to get to it. A new entrance location can help advertise it and bring more awareness to the area. The new entrance will have the same design style of the Seven Sisters location including a children’s area designed after Native American Villages. The paths will go along existing paths except to continue on through Murphy Creek under a bridge and on to the biggest site of Dunn’s Creek.

Dunns Creek

The Primitive camping has branches going off the main trail to group and single campsites that can be alternated out with other areas to recover.

Kayak camping along one of the few open spots along the river. Drive up camping will have Restrooms located and widely spaced camp sites that can be moved so each area can rest and recover from human interaction. Dunn’s Creek is currently a conservation area that is on the path to be a state Park. It is a varied area of Pine Flat-woods, Cypress Swamp, and Ravine hammocks. Several varied locations allow for many activities in the area including drive up camping near the entrance, primitive camping which gives a good two mile hike, and a landing area along the river allowing for Kayak camping.

Revere at Barton’s Run - Entrance I was tasked with coming up with a landscape plan for the entrance to an apartment complex in Lebanon, TN. I designed the southern side of the entrance road first, which included a monument sign due to the north side still having utilities added. The southern side needed a sight buffer against neighboring businesses so I chose Glossy Abelia to fill the voids between the trees and Ink Berry to be more of a medium, shade tolerant choice. The Purple PiIxie Loropetalum allowed for a break in the massing creating small colorful enclaves in a sea of greens. The three studies I did of the monument sign looked at different planting types to help emphasise the sign while also giving it color. I ended up puting muhly grass under the sign spearheaded with a bed of annual plants. Along the sides are Glossy Abelia and Ink Berry to tie it back to the rest of the drive. Once the utility boxes were installed I proceeded to design the north side. The north side had a larger area to plant in due to a stream buffer yet I still wanted the planting pallet to carry over from the opposite side of the road. I increased the massing of Muhly Grass and Glossy Abelia at the front to create a pleasing, eye catching, entrance. The Ink Berry was tall enough to cover the utility boxes thanks to a slope going down from the road. Once the utility boxes were covered I could add in Purple Pixie Loropetalum for splashes of ground color in-front of the bigger bushes and grasses. I kept the plantings close to the curb so the maintenance would be simple and yet would allow for the plants to reach their full potential size.

Douglasville Site Analysis

Jesse Davis Park

Douglasville site analysis was a project involving visits to specific sites to list out possible improvements and point out areas where parks were severly lacking. We then did a basic site analysis and listed out locations for new facilities or even how to improve existing facilities.

Willing Workers Park

Mill Village Park

Cherokee Veteran’s Monument This is a Monument honoring those who serve and have served that the county commission wanted added to a recently finished community sports park. The location is a rough circle with the round-a-bout and entrance to one side and a playground to the other side. I wanted to play off the circle while keeping the five branches of the military represented to I chose a star to represent that allowing for seat-walls all facing inward toward the pedestal and flag. A small planted area of berms and trees helped to become a loose buffer between the monument and playground. It came from sketches of a shooting star and then started forming in response to existing storm-water flow.

Monroe County Sports Complex Masterplan The City of Forsyth acquired a large 60 acre plot of land adjacent to their existing Youth Center/ Sports complex and wanted firms to submit Masterplans for consideration. They had an extensive list of items so after doing a site analysis my coworker and I proceeded to find a place for their existing site renovations, additional tennis and basketball courts, a splash-pad, six more baseball/ softball fields, six more soccer field, a football stadium, a paved track, a 5k trail, and a livestock pavilion with stables.

12

Pigeon Forge Access Drive & Trail Head Pigeon Forge, TN was building a Greenway system and we needed to update our plans to meet their most recent concerns about the entrance to a branch of the trails. It initially started as a quick change to the monument sign and pavers to match a nearby building which used a locally quarried stone for their facade. Once we got the site photos we realized the power poles couldn’t be moved and so I reworked the service road and grading to better accommodate the site while keeping the entrance ADA compliant.

Heritage Park - Phase 1

Heritage park had a very interesting situation in regards to grading. The exisiting historical building had to be ripped out due to structural issues and we were rebuilding a plaza in homage to it. there were four existing white oaks with a +30 DBH that we needed to protect. We ended up using the seat wall as a retaining wall in order to get the required FFE on the plaza to get a 10% slope on the lawn area.

These are custom details made for the plaza in heritage park. The paving had brick bands so we had to show how th concrete would have to be molded as well as where the expansion joints would be placed. The seat wall and pilaster were also custom since this wasn’t a typical site.

Peachtree Ridge Park

Hydrology Analysis

Peachtree Ridge Park is a Gwinnett County project to move the existing soccer fields and increase the amount of baseball fields. We looked at how we could use the existing land in the center of the park and see if it was feasible to grade it out. There was also a proposal for a Teen Rec Area and changes to the existing Playground in the future.

Soil Analysis

Slope Analysis

Concept A Concept A looked at two facing baseball fields, the soccer with the parking massed to the northern side. The Teen area left the existing basketball courts alone but had a skate park and then some sand volleyball at the northern end. The playground was rearranged to provide a safer space for children and allow for a long dog-park along one side. Concept B had the baseball fields oriented inside to make the most use of the space and bring the pavilion into a more central location. The soccer had the parking divided to either side allowing for more make up space in the grading. We moved the basketball courts so we could add one and bring the sand-volleyball courts more central in the teen area while keeping a long linear skate park. The playground was still shifted while the pavilion was left alone and the dog park divided into two more distinct spaces. Concept C located the baseball much more centrally and close to the pavilion with a small playground nestled between them. The soccer had all of the parking now on the southern end, divided so as to make up grade and storm-water retention. The teen area has more drastic grading to allow a pump track, four half-courts and a full court, three volley ball courts and a more organic shaped skate-park. The playground area was moved to the end of the field giving the dog park a bigger space while helping make up for more grading challenges.
