SPATIAL CONCEPT

The objective of this project is to create a makerspace that would cater the local community with the education and practice with the digital fabrication of concrete. In the vicinity of the site, there are multiple recycling facilities that would provide the makerspace lab raw materials for the community to use. For raw materials, we would use construction debris to re-use the aggregates in the process of recycling. This makerspace facility would have two sections: a recycling facility and a digital fabrication lab. The in-house recycling facility recycles construction debris from demolished sites and is crushed into aggregates to be used in the fabrication lab. The digital fabrication lab uses these aggregates to fuel the process of concrete 3D-printing. This would encourage the community to build and showcase their works, as well as providing education about digital fabrication.

The objective of this project is to retrofit the old supermarket in Madrid, Spain, Mercado a la Cebada. With the goal to making this space more active, our team observed mechanical objects that are in our daily use and made design iterations that would fit the site. Individually, we chose our own “artifact” and investigated its form and functionality at original scale and made some possible scenarios and interventions that can fit the site project. For my “artifact,” I chose an umbrella because of its mechanical system. Most of the ideas are furnitures that would optimize the space; whether it’s providing for the space or dividing it. The elements of folding and contracting, similar to stretching your arm, gives us functionality to extend our reach, therefore, extending the spatial capacity of an object. This technique is applied to the building structure on the right, creating a classroom and an inspirational space to retrofit Mercado a la Cebada.

The next part would be to combine the team’s investigations with our “artifacts” to create a space to house 15 artists. The 6 dome-like structure helped design the program and subdividing it into 3 sections inside the building: living quarters, educational area and exhibition spaces. The living quarters and exhibition spaces were designed by my team with their artifact-inspired structures while I designed the educational area and the auditorium. To connect all of these functions together, we decided to create a mezzanine that would serve as a viewing deck for the audiences to use. This would provide them an experiential space, as well as giving purpose to the plaza outside of the building, makig the community more active with events hosted by artists.

OUR CONCEPT OF THIS PROGRAM CALLS FOR A CELEBRATION OF A PUBLIC SPACE PRAISING ARCHITECTURE’S CAPACITY OF BECOMING AN EDUCATIVE SOCIAL CONDENSOR. WE INTRODUCE VERTICAL HYDROPONIC GARDENS AS THE MAIN ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTION, WHICH MEANS EVERY ELEMENT IS PRODUCTIVE; FROM COURTYARD TO STREETS.

+ PUSHING THE PROGRAMS ON THE SIDE TO ALLOW PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT.

FUNCTIONAL A EXISTING SITE IS DETACHED FROM OPEN PLAZA AND THE URBAN CONTEXT OF THE CITY + THERE IS NO VISUAL CONNECTION FROM OUTSIDE AND INSIDE SPACES.
