울창한 숲, 맑은 하늘과 물이 흐르는 아름다운 백락사에서 ‘2014 강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 이 개최됨을 진심으로 축하 드립니다. 아울러, 매년 아름답고 풍성한 행사를 위해 애써주시는 성민 강원환경설치미술전 조직위원장님, 정경연 교수님, 이필하 교 수님을 비롯한 관계자 여러분과 바쁘신 중에도 자리를 함께 해주셔서 기쁘게 생각합니다.

I would like to give my heartfelt congratulations on the opening of the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ held at the beautiful Baekrak Buddhist Temple with its lush forests, blue skies and pristine waters.

Furthermore, I welcome and give my thanks to the Head Priest of Baekrak Buddhist Temple, Sungmin, Professor Kyoungyeon Chung, Professor Philha Yi and to all of you for joining us on this special occasion.

또한 도민들에게 수준 높은 미술작품으로 문화향유의 기회를 제 공해 주신 작가 여러분께도 진심어린 감사의 박수를 보냅니다. 환경과 인간은 뗄레야 뗄 수 없는 관계입니다. 최근 기후 변화 에 따른 징후들이 나날이 늘어나고 있습니다. 각종 환경오염으 로 인해 썩고, 사라지는 강과 숲들... 참으로 안타까운 일입니 다. 이제 환경은 우리에게 변화를 요구하고 있습니다. 자연은 개발과 이용의 대상으로서가 아닌 있는 그대로를 보존하고, 이 해하고 더불어 살아야 하는 자연으로 바라보아야 하지 않을까 생각합니다. 이런 시점에서 자연과 하나 되는 미술 작품을 통해 함께 호흡 할 수 있는 기회의 장을 마련한‘2014 강원환경설치미술초대작 가전’ 은 그 의미가 크다고 할 수 있습니다. 지금까지 여러 번의 전시회가 개최된‘2014 강원환경설치미술 초대작가전’ 은 관계자와 참여 작가 모두의 도전 정신으로 성장 하여 우리나라를 대표하는 설치미술전으로 자리하였습니다. 특히, 외국 작가를 초대하는 등 국제적인 행사로 발돋움하는 계 기가 되어 강원도의 성장 가능성을 보여줄 것으로 기대하고 있 습니다. 다시 한번‘2014 강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 을 축하드리며, 앞으로의 무궁한 발전과 전시회에 참석해 주신 모든 분들께 행복이 함께 하시기를 기원합니다. 감사합니다.

I would also like to extend my gratitude to all the contributing artists for enhancing this valuable cultural experience with their intriguing works of art.

Humans and nature are two entities that cannot be separated.

Recently the signs of climate change are rising in urgency.

It is saddening to acknowledge that due to environmental pollution, rivers and forests are waning and vanishing. Nature is now calling to us for a change. It is time to preserve nature just as it is, not as an object of development and exploitation.

Let us seek to understand and live together with nature.

I believe it is significant that we are holding this ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ at this time, where we can become one with nature through art.

Through the dedication of the artists and all others involved in the opening of the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition,’ we have become a cultural centerpiece that can represent our nation.

오곡백과가 여물어 가는 가을의 문턱에‘2014 강원환경설치 미술초대작가전’ 이 나라꽃 무궁화의 고장 홍천에서 열리게 된 것을 7만 군민과 함께 진심으로 축하드립니다. 아울러, 행사준비를 위해 애써주신 성민스님, 정경연 교수 님, 이필하 교수님을 비롯한 강원환경설치미술초대작가전 관계자 여러분과 수준 높은 작품으로 피폐해진 현대인들의 마음에 한줄기 희망을 전달하는 국내외의 훌륭하신 초대작 가 여러분께도 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 일찍이 우리 민족은 풍부한 지혜와 창조정신을 바탕으로 인 류역사에 빛나는 위대한 문화유산들을 수없이 남겨왔습니 다. 금속활자가 그렇고 훈민정음 창제 또한 세계에서 유래 를 찾아볼 수 없는 뛰어난 유산입니다. 특히 이를 바탕으로 한 예술의 모든 분야는 민족정신 형성의 내적 토대가 되었 다고 봅니다. 환경설치미술은 기존의 미술 영역에 환경과 자연을 소재로

On the eve of the coming autumn season, as the five grains ripen for harvest, I, along with 70,000 of our citizens, would like to give my heartfelt congratulations on the opening of the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ here in Hongcheon, the home of our national flower the rose of Sharon.

I would also like to thank the Head Priest of Baekrak Buddhist Temple Sungmin, Professor Kyoungyeon Chung, Professor Philha Yi and everyone involved in the organization of the ‘Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition.’ My gratitude also goes to the incredible domestic and foreign artists, who have provided us with their captivating artwork, which will spread rays of hope to the destitute masses.

Throughout human history, the people of our nation have left behind countless significant cultural legacies with their overflowing wisdom and creativity. The invention of the movable type printing press and the Hunminjeongeum Manuscript, which originated here in Korea, are a few of our great legacies. I find that these laid the foundation for the development of our national spirit towards all mediums of arts.

한 작품 및 활동 등을 포괄적으로 수용하는 미술로 좁은 공 간에서 벗어나 거대한 환경 전체를 하나의 작업공간으로 확 대시켜 작품화하여 자연공간속에서 대중과 함께 공유하며 새로운 공간에의 관심을 불러일으키게 하는 예술이라고 생 각합니다.

Environmental installation art has moved beyond its previous domain of just working with materials from art and nature. It is now an art form that encompasses the whole environment in creating a workspace in which to craft a piece of art in a nature to share with the masses, and to attract their attention to new places.

Through the successful opening of the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition,’ we can spread the awareness of environmental installation art, the artistic interpretation of nature through art. We also hope this Exhibition can reopen our eyes to the preciousness of nature.

Once again, I would like to give my gratitude to the participating artists, and to all the hard work of everyone involved in putting this exhibit together. I wish for the advancement of environmental installation art through your spirited creations.

자연과 예술, 그리고 홍천을 사랑하시는 참석자 여러분, 안녕하십니까? 국회의원 황영철입니다. 홍천 주음치리의 아름다운 자연 경관과 작품이 한데 어우러져 자연의 예술적 숨결을 느낄 수 있는 문화축제의 장,‘2014 강 원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 이 개최됨을 진심으로 뜻깊고 감사 하게 생각합니다. 사람의 손때가 묻지 않은 홍천 주음치리 고유의 아름다움과 어우러지는 설치미술전을 고안해, 매년 지역에 예술의 숨결을 불어넣는 문화축제로 발전시켜 주신 조직위원회 관계자 여러 분과 성민 스님께 진심으로 감사드립니다. 더불어 아름다운 홍천의 자연과 미술작품의 어울림으로 이번 미술전을 빛내주신 국내 30명, 해외 9명의 작가 여러분들께도 깊이 감사드립니다.

‘2014 강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 을 관람하시는 여러분, ‘2014 강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 은 지난 2006년 개최된 '제1 회 일락전-홍천 화촌 백락사 환경설치미술전'을 시작으로 매년 그 규모를 확장시키며 다채로운 프로그램의 변화를 주고 있습 니다. 그 결과 이제는 개막일이면 강원도뿐만 아니라 서울 등 각지에서 설치미술전을 보기 위해 찾아든 관광객으로 인산인 해를 이루곤 합니다. 저도 매년‘강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 을 찾아 홍천 주음치 리의 아름다운 자연환경과 다채로운 설치미술을 감상하고 있 습니다. 그런데 분명 같은 장소인데도 매년 올 때마다 새로운 느낌으로 와닿는‘강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 을 보면서, 자 연의 아름다움과 예술의 힘을 다시 한번 느끼게 됩니다. 설치미술전을 위해 힘써주신 조직위원회 관계자 여러분과 작가 여러분께 다시 한번 깊은 감사의 말씀드리며, 관람을 위해 홍 천을 찾아주신 관람객 여러분 모두 홍천 자연의 아름다움을 느 끼며 마음에 안식을 얻으시는 행복한 시간이 되길 기원합니다. 감사합니다.

Greetings to all gathered here today who love nature, the arts and Hongcheon. I am Youngcheul Hwang, a member of the National Assembly.

I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the opening of this cultural festival, the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ held in the picturesque surroundings of Jueumchiri of Hongcheon, a place where we can become one with the instrinsic life of nature.

I give my heartfelt gratitude to Head Priest Sungmin and to all of the organization committee, who have promoted this cultural festival art exhibit where nature’s art blends in harmony with the unique beauty of Jueumchiri of Hongcheon, a place untouched by human hands.

Furthermore, I would also like to extend my gratitude to the 30 Korean and nine foreign artists, who have honored us with their works of art displaying Hongcheon’s beautiful nature.

Ladies and gentlemen who have come to view the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition.’ The ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ began in 2006 as ‘The 1st Illakjeon-Hongcheon Hwacheon Baekrak Temple Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition,’ and has grown and expanded into this diverse event. As a result, on this opening day, we have not only residents of Gangwon, but people from Seoul and all over Korea gathered here to see our exhibition.

I come every year to view the beautiful landscape of Jueumchiri of Hongcheon, and the diverse installation art of the ‘Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition.’

Though it is certainly the same place, the emotions the exhibit invokes in me each year are new, and once again, I appreciate the power of art and the beauty of nature.

Again, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the organization committee, the artists and to all who have worked hard to bring about this Installation Art exhibition. I extend my wishes to all who have traveled here to enjoy the beautiful nature of Hongcheon.

산다는 것이 무거운 짐이었던 시간들을

Late into the night I carved the stone

지우고자 늦은 밤까지 돌을 깍곤했다.

to erase the times when living became a heavy burden.

허리도 무릎도 편치 않았던 시간들이

The times I did not have pain in my back and knees,

오히려 위안 삼아지는 불면의 여름.

were a comfort in the sleepless summer.

That night flowers bloomed,

그 밤에도 꽃은 피고 있었고

The kernels of corn ripened.

옥수수는 알이 익어갔다. 내 삶의 연속이 항상 의미없지는 않았는데

My unfolding life was not always without purpose, But today, everything seemed unusually alien.

오늘은 모든 사물들이 유별나게 생경했다.

거기 너가 있었고

You were there

나에게 가만히 눈짓하고 있음을

Silently glancing my way.

내 나이가 무색하게 이제야 알았을까?

Did you realize now that my age was irrelevant?

고맙다. 살아 있다는 것이 눈물 날만큼

Greeting

강원도의 아름다운 환경과 문화의 연결고리로써, 2006년 첫 번째 전시가 개최된 후 올해로 아홉 번째를 맞이하게 되었습 니다. 설치미술은 자연이라는 환경을 거대한 캔버스로 삼고, 예술과 상호적 보완 및 교감을 통해 어울림이라는 통합을 이루어 냄 으로써, 예술문화의 관점에서 누구나 쉽고 편안하게 접근을 가 능케 함이 환경설치미술의 장점이자 매력이라 할 수 있겠습니 다. 특히 강원도의 빼어난 풍광과 어우러진 설치미술은 기존 의 전시장 위주의 획일화된 전시에서 벗어나 자연과의 소통이 라는 담론을 담고, 설치작가와 관람자가 함께 공유하고 참여할 수 있는 예술이라고 봅니다. 이번전시는 국내는 물론, 독일, 이태리, 스페인, 아르메니 아, 일본, 몽골 등의 다양한 나라의 39명 작가들을 초대하여, 2013년에 이어‘강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 이 지향하는 국 제전으로서의 확장을 가능케 할 수 있는 초석을 다지는 전시 가 될 수 있으리라 짐작 해 봅니다. 이처럼 지난 9회를 지내온 동안 외형적으로나 질적으로 급속 적인 발전을 가져올 수 있었던 것은 조직위원장이신 백락사 주지 성민스님과 신도님들, 예술총감독을 맡은 건국대학교 이 필하교수와 많은 시간을 폭염 속에서도 자연의 일부가 되어 땀과 열정을 바친 작가 여러분들의 노고가 있었기에 가능했으 리라 생각됩니다.

Since its first opening in 2006, we are now hosting our ninth exhibition here featuring a unique collection glorifying the beautiful environment and culture of Gangwon.

Installation art takes the large canvas of nature and combines it with mutually complementary art. And the unique perspective of arts and culture makes it easy and comfortable for anyone to approach installation art. This is the advantage and charm special to environmental installation art.

This is true especially in Gangwon with its stunning scenery that merges so well with installation art. Unlike previous standard exhibits, environmental installation art is an art through which we can commune with nature, as well as collaborate together with artists and viewers.

At this year’s exhibition we have artists from many different countries including Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, Mongolia, etc. and Korea among the 39 artists invited. After the 2013 ‘Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition,’ we believe this exhibition has the solid foundation needed to expand as a global event.

As with the past nine exhibitions, this exhibition, with its rapid improvement in quality, was only possible due to the hard work of the Chairman of the Organization Committee, the Head Priest of Baekrak Buddhist Temple Sungmin and his followers, the Art Director Professor Philha Yi of Konkuk University and the artists who became one with nature, dedicating their passion and sweat in the sweltering heat.

I have no doubt that the ‘2014 Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ will become a cultural festival where we can all join together. 주음치리 노래의 희열을 꿈꾸며

강원환경설치미술조직위원회 예술감독 건국대학교 예술디자인대학장 이 필 하

‘강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 은 미술가의 관심범위를 기존의 미술영역의 범주와 함께 환 경과 자연을 소재로 한 시각적 작품 및 활동 등을 포괄적으로 수용한다. 이는 설치미술의 개념적 승화와 대중적 인식확산을 기대하며, 자연 공간속에 대중과 함께 호흡을 함께 할 수 있는 미술을 자유롭게 펼치고자 공간을 마련하고자 한다. 강원환경설치미술전에서의 환경은 곧 순수한 자연의 의미로 다가가는 것이며, 환경미술은 미술이 더불어 공유할 수 있는 공간을 의미하는 것이다. ‘강원환경설치미술초대작가전’ 은 해마다 자연을 예술적 차원으로 해석 또는 인식의 지평 을 확대한다는 것에 개념적 중심을 근본으로 두고, 휴식, 여가와 자연의 숨결이 깃들어 있는 축제의 공간으로 구현하고자 하는 전시이다. 마을 주민과 함께 미술품을 제작하기도 하고, 때론 그들의 작품을 예술품으로 등장시키기 보다는 자연과 함께 호흡하는 미술로써 등장시켜 미술의 탄생을 이해시키기도 한다. 예술 적 가치는 미비할 수 있으나 대중과 함께하는 즐거움은 여느 미술전보다도 그 의미가 매 우 크다 할 수 있다. 그런 의미에서 보면, 오케스트라 지휘자이자 작곡가인 구스타프 말러(Gustav Mahler)의 교향곡 8번‘대지의 노래’ 가 떠오 른다. 삶의 필요 의식, 위축에 대한 형이상학적 관심, 수면, 휴식, 부활이라는 소재를 다룬 곡이다. 그의 곡은 연주와 함께 시작되는 지루함이 특징처럼 다가오지만 시간의 지남과 함께 그의 매혹에 몰입하게 되는 묘한 마력이 있다. 이러한 몰입 은 아마도 홍천 주음치리에서의 시간과도 같을 것이다. 지휘자는 오케스트라를 설득력 있는 음악적 어조로 재탄생 시킨다. 간결한 스코어링을 음악적으로 훌륭히 표현해 내 듯, 8월의 주음치리 또한 설치미술을 이용한 스코어링을 시작해 본다. 주음치리의‘대지의 노래’ 는 8월에 시작된다.‘그 곳에서 자유롭다’ 는 어느 작가의 말처럼 8월에 주음치리는 자유로운 설 치미술작가들이 모이기 시작한다. 이들은 자연이라는 환경을 주제로 새로운 공간적 개념을 연출한다. 다년간 참여한 작가 나 처녀 출연한 작가나 해마다 변모하는 자연의 변화를 확인하는 과정을 통해 공간과의 교감을 교류하며 작품을 구상한 다. 쓰러져 있는 나무, 덩그러니 놓인 돌, 산업의 부산물 등을 또 다른 미적개념과 함께 새로운 형태로 재탄생 시킨다. 더 욱이 낯선 문화와 환경이 어색할 수 있는 외국작가들로서는 다소 어려운 과제 임에도 불구하고 생소함을 작품 속으로 불 어넣기도 한다. 이러한 과정 속에서 환경설치미술은 삼차원적인 형태와 거대한 규 모, 건축과 풍경에 대한 새로운 공간에 대중들의 관심을 부활시키기 도 한다. ‘작곡가의 희열은 점을 찍을 때 누린다.’ 다고 한다. 자연미술을 주를 이루는 작가, 개념적 승화를 이루는 작가, 형태적 표현이 주를 이루는 작가, 색채 시각적 효과를 이용한 작가, 산업의 이기(利器)를 이용한 작가 등 다양한 분류의 작가들의 작품을 예술에 서의 조화라는 지극히 근본적인 원리로 말러의‘대지의 노래’ 를 꿈꾸 며‘주음치리의 노래’ 를 시작해 본다.

Through this I anticipate installation art’s conceptual transcendence, and the spread of its recognition to the public. We wanted to provide a place in nature where the public can comfortably breathe together with the art. At the ‘Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition,’ the environment allows us to approach the purist forms of nature where we can further spread environmental art.

The annual ‘Gangwon Environmental Installation Art Invitational Artists Exhibition’ is fundamentally a festival centered on interpreting and spreading the awareness of nature on an artistic level. This exhibition emphasizes rest, leisure and the life of nature to characterize this festival.

At times we will work with the residents of this town to create these works of art, and through presenting these works of art that are one with nature, we enlighten them through the birth of art. Although the artistic value of these pieces may not be significant, the joy we give to the public through our works lends its own special significance to this exhibition.

This reminds me of the orchestra conductor and composer Gustav Mahler’s Eighth Symphony ‘Das Lied von Der Erde’ (The Song of the Earth). The piece addresses themes such as the awareness of life, the abstract interest in deterioration, sleep, rest and resurrection. In the beginning of the piece, boredom begins to creep up on us; but as time passes, the piece exudes a unique charm that captivates us. I feel you will be similarly captivated in your experience with Jueumchiri of Hongcheon.

It is the conductor that gives life to the compelling musical tones of an orchestra. Just as the concise scoring (arrangement) of a piece gives it its amazing musical expression, let us begin scoring in August with Jueumchiri and installation art.

‘The Song of the Land’ of Jueumchiri begins in August. Just as one author said, ‘There I will be free,’ the free installation art contributors will begin to gather in August. With the topic of nature and the environment, they will produce new concepts of space. Artists who have participated before, or who are participating for the first time this year, will design a piece that orchestrates nature’s process of transformation and season changes each year, while interacting with space. They will give recreate new pieces using fallen trees, rocks lying about, industrial byproducts, etc. and aesthetic ideas. Although it may be a difficult and awkward task for our foreign artists, we feel those difficulties will lend inspiration to their pieces.

In this process, environmental installation art uses large-scale 3-D structures, while achieving harmony between architecture and landscape. Through this process, installation art will help create a new space that will rekindle public interest.

They say, ‘The composer feels joy as he writes each note.’

Let us imagine Mahler’s ‘Song of the Earth’ as we begin our own ‘Song of Jueumchiri’ and work in harmony, which is the fundamental principle of art. With their art works, these environmental artists will transcend concepts and utilize typological art, the visual effects of color, the convenience of industry and other varied mediums of art.

모든 사물은 홀로 존재하는 것이 아니라 상호의존적 관계로 존재하는 것이다. 자연과 인간의 관계도 마찬가지다. 인간은 홀로 모든 주변의 환경과 자연을 설명하고 지배할 수 없다. 서로 어루만져주고 접촉함으 로써 가까워지듯 사람과 사람도, 사람과 자연도 서로 관계하고 접촉할 때 진정한 화해와 공존을 할 수 있을 것이다. 새는 상처받은 자연이며 상처받은 사람이다. 나무는 치유의 자연이며 또한 화해의 대상이다. 새와 나무의 모습에서 내가 찾고 싶은 것은 자연과 문명, 자연과 인간이라는 대립적인 지평의 화해를 모색하여 대응과 공존을 하며 서로 보듬어 줄 때 진정한 자유의 날개를 찾을 수 있는 단초가 될 것이다.

공사장에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 비계는 인간이 새로운 건축물 을 만들기 위해서 사용하는 것으로 인공물 조형의 상징적인 대상이다. 자연의 상징인 나무와 숲에 설치되는 공사장 비 계에 바람과 빛의 그림자를 조형요소로 활용한 작업을 통해 서 자연과 인공의 조화로운 접점을 상징화하였다. 사용된 패브릭은 기존 작업에 사용하였던 작업물을 재가공, 재배치한 것으로 건축과 도시, 인간의 삶을 상징한다. 이것들은 모두 자연의 시간흐름과 상응하는 호흡을 통하여 교감하는 영속성을 표현한다.

어느날 철물점을 지나며 녹색 플라스틱 빗자루와 대나무 싸리 빗자루 두 개가 나란히 놓여져 있는 모습을 보 게 되었다. 우리가 항상 길에서 마주치는 빗자루는 녹색 플라스틱 빗자루. 녹색 플라스틱 빗자루를 보면 환경 미화원의 바쁜 빗질이 생각난다. 옛날 시골에 가면 마당에 항상 놓여있는 빗자루는 싸리 빗자루였다. 싸리 빗자루가 마당의 흙을 쓸어내는 소 리와 바닥에 남은 흔적은 지금의 바쁜 빗질과는 다른 여유와 느긋함이 남겨져 있는 듯 하였다. 그러한 여유와 느긋함을 가진 싸리 빗자루를 한데 모아 머릿속의 복잡한 생각을 쓸어내고 싶다는 생각을 하 였다. 먼지와 낙엽을 쓸어내는 싸리 빗자루로 바쁘고 복잡한 생각을 쓸어내어 여유를 담고 싶다는 마음을 작 은 빗자루 숲으로 표현하고 싶다.

참 빠르다. 먼지가 일던 신작로를 지나, 풀 향기 가득한 목장 길을 벗 삼아 초등학교에 다니던 시간이 엊그제 같 은데... 벌써 중학교 3학년을 둔 가장이 되었다. 다변화 시대를 살아가는 중년에 있어, 그 시절의 추억과 향기가 베어 있는 고향은, 작업 요소를 담고 있는 우물과 같다.

“2014 향기에서 색을 찾다” 는 해부학적 구조의 형을 새겨가는 것이 아니라, 사유를 담아 무극의 시간 여행을 하 고 싶어, 또 나무를 때린다. 늘 옆에 두고 얘기하지만 한 올, 한 올, 한 겹, 한 겹 끌과 망치로 억겁의 시간을 들추 다 보면, 그 향기와 색이 지친 영혼을..... 그래서 나무가 좋다. 창조의 고독을 통해 무엇을 잘 만들기 보단, 생각과 자연을 결합하여, 어떤 문화를 만들고, 소통해야하는지... 생각의 표현 2014년 7월 뜨거운 여름도, 영혼을 달래주는 나무와 노동의 묘한 매력을 가지고, 강원 홍천 주음치리로 간다.

“평정심을 유지” 한다거나“중용을 지킨다” 와 같은 말들은 오랜 시간 동양의 정신을 대변하는 가치이며 현대 사회에는 더더욱 그 소중함이 절실하게 빛을 발한다. 자본주의 사회에서 점점 더 인간성은 그 존엄을 잃어가 고 갈피를 잃은 사람들은 각자 자기만의 방식으로 요동치는 마음의 부표 위에 평행유지의 갈망을 투사한다. 어떤 이는 요가로 어떤 이는 명상으로 어떤 이는 평생 살던 도시를 등지고 농부가 된다. 하지만 세상은 끊임 없이 그리고 집요하게 우리의 평정을 향한 갈구를 흔들어 놓는다. 자전하고 있는 둥근 지구 위에서 평형이란 상태는 어쩌면 애초에 도달할 수 없는, 관념으로만 존재하는 이상일 수도 있다. 나는 오래 전부터‘상식’ 의 게임에 관심을 기울이며 작업을 해왔다. 고통과 번민으로부터 도망가려 하는 인간 의 본능과 다다를 수 없는 평정을 통한 열반에의 갈구 같은 것들이 내가 작업을 통해서 표현하려고 하는 것

이다. 이를 통하여 인간의 욕망이 얼마나 부질없고 사사로운지 그리고 그런 존재감들의 합집합들이 어떻게 이 세상의 연약함과 불안정함을 대변하는지 얘기하고자 한다.

“Instant Nirvana” 는 일종의 놀이기구이다. 수평계가 장착된 Platform위에‘정좌’ 를 하고 무게 중심을 매우 잘 조절해야지만‘완벽한 수평’상태를 유지할 수 있다. 언뜻 불안해 보이는 이 놀이기구를 즐기기 위해서‘관객’ 은 약간의 모험심을 발동시켜야 하고 이 수평지향의 플랫폼에 올라가는 순간 이 불안정한 구조를 지혜롭게 달래어 목표점에 도달해야 한다. 결국 이 게임의 결과물은 관객의 휴대전화기 사진으로 증거되고 자신들의 SNS 게시물로‘좋아요’ 의 숫자들에 의해 그‘재미’ 가 기록되겠지만 어쩌면 각자의 마음에 인간의 욕망의 궁극 에 대하여 고민할 수 있는 여지를 조금 남겨 놓을지도 모르겠다.

편하게 쉴 곳을 찾아 어디론가 떠나가 보자... 엄마의 뱃속처럼 따뜻한 그곳을 다시 찾고 싶은 회귀성을... 본능적으로 좁고 구석진 곳을 좋아하는 사람들의 취향을... 자기들만의 공간을 가지고 싶어 하는 마음을... 아늑했던 공간이 기억 속에 남아서 그러한 곳을 찾아가기를 원하는 마음을 천막, 텐트로 표현해 본다. 형형색색의 조각 천을 바느질로 연결한 원단을 재단하고 연결하여 삼각형 형태로 만들고 인디언 텐트처럼 간단한 외형으로 텐트를 제작해 본다. 그것을 넓은 공간에 부락을 이루듯이 배치하여 설치해 본다. 자연과 어우러지게 그러면서도 다양한 색채를 사용한 텐트는 추억과 만나는 행복한 상상력을 자극하기에 충분하다. 꿈을 찾아다니는 발걸음 속에 안락하게 쉴 곳을 찾는 이여! ‘이리로 와서 쉬시게’

창을 본다.

그러나 가까이 다가서고자 해도

창을 본다는 것은 나에게 있어선 소통을 의미한다.

미끌어져 더 이상 다가설 수 없는

낯선 문화와의 소통

보이지 않는 이질감을 느끼곤 하였다.

과거와 현실과의 소통뿐만 아니라

그렇게 문화적 이방인이 됨을 느끼고 몇 해를 지냈다.

나와 또 다른 나를

이제 나는 또 다시 창을 본다.

창은 현실속의 풍경이기도

낯설은 도시의 쇼윈도우가 아닌

또 우리의 마음이기도 하다

빛과 어둠이라는 창으로

과거에 나의 창은

이 세상을 바라보게 되었다.

새로운 도시에서 느껴지는 낯선 감흥을

눈을 떠 보면 모든 것이 빛과 색으로 가득 차 있다.

나의 실루엣을 통해 전달하고자 하였다.

억장이 무너졌다.

단지 안타깝기만 했던 마음이 안산분향소에 들어서자 한순간에 무너져 내렸다. 사람의 키 정도 되는 길이를 억 길이나 되게 쌓은 성이 있다. 億丈之城 (억장지성) 이다.

누구는 욕심으로 사람을 쌓고 쌓고 또 쌓고 누구는 가슴에 자식을 파묻고 파묻고 또 파묻는다. ...

자꾸만 억장이 무너진다.

이 작업을 위해서 먼저 흙작업을 해야 한다. 지금까지는 존재했거나 존재하거나 혹은 존재하길 바라는 생명체의 형태를 주로 소조(塑造)했다. 그리고 석고가루를 개어 발라 겉틀을 떠내고 그 틀 위에 쇠구슬을 깔고 용접해 면을 만들어간다. 그리고 만 들어진 면을 틀에서 꺼내 합체를 하면 애초의 흙작업한 형태가 재현되고 내부에만 용접이 되어 있어서 겉은 쇠구슬이 잔뜩 박혀 이루어진 형태이다. 이제부터는 구슬로 이루어진 표면을 처리할 차례다. 구슬들 사이의 움푹 들어간 부분들에 불대를 대고 불을 때리면 서로가 하나로 녹아 붙어 불규칙하고 다양한 모양의 불구멍들이 생긴다. 결국엔 수 만개 구슬의 흔적은 사 라지고 투박한 한 덩어리 철의 형상이 남게 된다. 고도의 기술로 깎여 가공된 상품인 공업용 쇠구슬들이 무수한 불질에 태양같이 달궈져서 녹아 하나로 합쳐져 자신의 본래 용도와 형태를 잃고 집적된 채 한 덩어리 무딘 생명체의 형태로 전이되는 과정을 지켜보는 것은 장기간 무수히 반복되는 고 된 용접임에도 불구하고 은근히 자극적인 쾌감을 주고 작업이 끝나는 날까지 편안함을 얻게 되며 따라서 바로 다음 작업으 로 이어가는 자극이 된다. 나는 지금은 이러한 작업을 하지만 현장에선 어떤 작업을 해야 할까 생각해 보며 주음치리 일대와 백락사 주변을 걷다가 경 내에서 풍경소리를 들었다. 바람에 물고기가 흔들리며 하늘하늘 은은한 풍경소리는 바로 쇠구슬들의 조합으로 이루어진 풍경 제작의 욕구로 이어졌고 돌아가 바로 제작으로 돌입하게 되었다. 하늘을 헤엄치는 물고기.. 종.. 또 작은 물고기.. 바람.. 그리 고 소리.. 부디 백락사 안에서 어우러지기를...

본인이 태어나고 자라온 도시를 십여 년의 시간이 지난 후에 찾아가 탐색하고 기록하는 행위로부터 작업은 시작된다. 부분적으로는 익숙한, 하지만 전체적으로 낯선 도시의 모습은 그동안의 단절된 시간을 보여주었고, 새로 생긴 건물들 과 아직도 그 자리에 익숙한 모습으로 남아있는 건물들은 이를 단적으로 나타내고 있었다. 나를 찾아보는 과정에서 시작된‘만들어진 풍경’작업은 부천시의 이야기를 거쳐 현재 본인이 사는 용인시의 이야기 ‘TAKE A TRAIN’ 으로 이어지고 있다. 용인의 동, 서를 가로 지르며 달리는 경전철을 타고 바라 본 신도시와 구도심, 각양각색의 간판과 현수막, 방향을 알려주는 이정표, 아직도 확장중인 도시의 모습은 한정된 시각에서만 바라보던 도 시의 모습과는 사뭇 달랐다. 도시에 산재되어 있는 시각기호들은 용인이라는 도시의 특징을 단적으로 나타내고 있었고, 이런 요소들은 채집의 대 상이 되었다. 거리의 시각 기호들을 채집, 해체, 변환의 과정을 거쳐 재구성하는 작업을 통해 도시의 모습을 보여주고 자 했고, 특히 개발과 관련된 지역 문제들을 조명함으로써 우리를 둘러싸고 있는 도시 환경에 대한 고찰과 관심의 장 을 마련하고자 했다. 또한 이렇게 재구성된 이미지들은 용인을 드러내는 동시에 은폐시키는, 용인의 모습이자 우리를 둘러싼 도시의 모습인 것이다.

나는 늘 같은 방법을 사용한다. 이것이 좋다. 물론 가끔은 지루하다. 한 개의 줄이 몇 개의 사슬이 되고 그 사슬은 마침내 커다란 매듭을 만든다. 난 그게 좋다. 늘 같은 자리에서 조금씩 커져가는 매듭을 만들며 회상에 잠기기도 하고 희망을 꿈꾸기도 한다. 난 그렇게 늘 이 자리에서 같은 생각을 하고 있다.

미에 대한 행복의 추구

일이 많아지고 부터는 모든 것이 근심이 되었다. 어느 날은 너무 가물어서 걱정이었고 큰 행사를 앞두고는 궂은 날만 되어도 마음이 무겁다. 사람관계는 얼마나 어려운지, 한결같은 마음으로 함께 할 수 있는 사람은 더욱 귀하고 작은 부탁 하나 청하기도 어려워지는 조건들이 세상살이인가 한숨부터 나온다.

벌써 가을비인지 긴팔 옷을 꺼내어 입고 행사준비 상황을 체크해보면 연밥은 살이 익어가고 밤송이 또한 많이 굵어 있다. 어 느 틈에 가을 또한 코 앞까지 와있고 이런 모든 순간들도 모두 지나가는 시간이란 생각이 미치니 가장 중요한 것은 지금 이 순간을 직시하는 것이 아닐까하는 생각이 든다.

많은 작가들과 학생 그리고 스텝들이 종일 분주하다. 여유 있게 일 하는 사람은 한 사람도 없는 것 같다. 어떤 행사도 완벽한 조건으로 치루어 질 수는 없기에 부족한 부분을 시간과 헌신으로 메꾸게 된 다. 젊은 학생들의 건강한 몸놀림이 부럽기도 하고 미래에 대한 기 대감이 고무되기도 한다. 이런 열정과 봉사정신의 연속이 우리가 꿈 꾸는 세상이 아닐까?

깃발이 솟고 작품들이 모습을 드러내는 순간, 탐미는 삶의 목표가 아닌 본질이라는 의미가 기억된다. 누가 시켜서 하는 삶이 아니라 하고 싶어서 하는 삶의 내용은 많은 차이가 있다. 한낮의 더위와 가 을비의 써늘함에 젖은 외형의 모습이 아닌 즐거워서 힘들지 않은 미소를 보는 행복은 우리가 추구하는 길과 다르지 않다는 생각. 여 기 함께 인연이 되어 초대작가전에 초대 된 모든분들이 명예도 돈도 아닌 미에 대한 행복 때문에 함께 했다는 사실.

소일이어도 좋고 직업이어도 좋다. 사랑과 미에 대한 욕구를 놓지 않는다면 인생은 행복하다. 누구 때문에 행복한 것이 아닌 나 때문에 행복한 작품들이 지천이다. 더불어 가을빛 까지 더하면 세상의 시름을 잠깐 잊게 한다. 이 우울한 나라에서 각자 행복을 찾아야 한다. 누가 구원을 줄 것이며 누가 대한민국의 주인인가. 우리 모두 각자의 몫이다. 내가 없으면 아무 것도 없다. 봄부터 시작된 이 슬픔을 놓지는 않겠지만 이 순간만은 나에게 위로와 희망을 채우고 싶다.

바람이 불어 깃발이 흔들리는가. 깃발이 흔들려 바람이 보이는가.

작품이 나에게 말을 한다.

The pursuit of happiness regarding beauty

I was worried from the beginning when there was so much work to do. My heart grew heavy as some days the weather was too dry, while there was so much rain on the days leading to this event. Through this process, I realized the difficulties of human relations. Conditions arouse which made it difficult to ask for even small favors, and I learned how precious it is to find people with the same mindset.

Due to the early autumn rains, I took out my long-sleeved clothing as I prepared for the event, meanwhile checking the ripeness of the lotus blossom and the thickness of the chestnut burr. With the fast approach of autumn, I saw each moment passing by me, and realized that right now the most important thing was to face each moment head on.

Many artists, students and staff worked hard throughout the long days. I don’t believe even one person worked lightly. Since no event can be held with perfect conditions, the time and dedication invested must make up for any discrepancies. Watching the young students work, I was a bit envious of their vigorous energy; but also filled with anticipation for their futures. Is this not the perpetual passion and spirit of service inherent in the world we dream of?

The moment the flag rose and the art pieces were revealed, I remembered that the love of beauty was not the goal of life, but the essence of life. There is a big difference in living a life because someone made you, to living a life because you want to. The path in life we pursue is not different from when we looked past the heat of midday, or our drenched appearance from the cool autumn rains, and instead smiled joyfully forgetting our difficulties. We are all gathered here today not for money or fame, but for the appreciation of beauty.

Our lives will be happy if we maintain the desire for love and beauty, even if it is only for work or a pastime. Do not find happiness because of others, but because there are many works that bring out happiness in you. With this and the autumn rains, you can briefly forget the troubles of the world.

Does the flag wave due to the blowing wind, or do we see the wind due to the waving flag?

The art speaks to me.

나의 작업은 흙탕물이 정제되어 맑은 물을 떠올리듯 생각을 수없이 개진한 결과물이다. 단순함에 이르 고자하는 부단한 자맥질이다. 따라서 설명은 오히려 풍부하고 자유로운 감상의 여행을 편협한 길로 안 내하는 오류에 빠질까 염려스럽다.

‘Inner Voice’ 는 말 그대로 내면의 소리에 귀 기울임이다. 일종의 건축가가 오페라 극장의 소리에 관여 하는 것과 비슷한 것이다. 보이지 않는 내면의 소리에 천천히 가능한 적은 요소로 표현하고자 했다. 세 상은 너무 시끄럽고 너무 빠르며 너무 많은 것들로 넘쳐나고 있다.‘Inner Voice’ 는 명상이며 농부의 삶을 닮고자하는 작가의 바람이다.

그 어느 때보다 소통을 강조하는 이 시대에 우리가 제일 어려워하는 것은‘소통’ 이다. 이를 위해 우 리가 당면한 여러 상황들을 일일이 설명할 필요는 없다. 소통은 어렵다. 때로 사람들의 사이는 너무 멀어 보인다. 과거에도 그러했고 미래에도 그럴 것이다. 때문에 사람들은 계속해서 서로의 관계에 대해 불안함을 느낀다. 그렇다면 질문을 바꿔보자.“소통 이란 원래 가능한 것인가?”극단적으로 보자면 소통은 가능 불가능의 영역이 아닌 존재하지 않는 허구 같은 것일 수도 있다. 어찌 보면 빠르게 결정짓고 재빠르게 다른 선택을 해야 하는 요즘의 우리에게 소통의 인식의 문제 는 그리 중요치 않을 수 있다. 하지만 사회라는 거대한 시스템 안에서 개개인의 정체성보다 타인과 의 관계를 위한‘소통’ 을 추구하는 우리는 소통의 이면을 파헤쳐 봄과 동시에 소통을 다양하게 인 식해 봄으로써 관계의 불안정성을 인정하고 고독과 고립에 함몰되지 않고 자신의 정체성을 고민해 봐야 한다.

새로 난 길을 따라 백락사 뒤편 산을 돌아보다 전에 몰랐던 아늑한 장소를 발견했다. 산 속의 작은 빈터, 가만히 이 장소에 머무르는데 포근한 느낌을 받았고 이 느낌이 괜한 느낌이 아니라는 것은 얼마 되지 않아 알게 되었다. 자세히 보면 돌담이 보인다. 상상을 해본다. 그래도 남쪽 햇살을 받으려면 이곳쯤에 집이 있었을 테고... 장독대는 저쯤일거고... 주인은 집을 떠나고 집은 흔적도 없이 자연 본래의 상태로 돌아가고 집과 마당 자리도 작은 나무들이 자리 잡았다. 편안하다. 성민스님과 백락사의 많은 것을 넓게 아우르는 푸근함처럼 이곳 이 자리는 백락사를 닮았다. 그래! 이 자리 다! 이곳에 포근한 뭔가를 해야지!

My art puts different materials into dialogue. A dialogue revolving around these materials‘ qualities, highlighting the specific characteristics of the structure of a material and its descriptive effects. It is the contrasts of materials, colours and forms, the confrontation of the rampant growing of the natural with the calculable geometry, which represent a central motive of my work.

I use found objects as raw material, such as branches, stones or roots. They are left in their natural condition, upon which a language is bestowed by adding or veiling, not to free them of their material world, but rather to emphasize their being as form. By the confrontation with industrial or luxurious “civilized“ materials such as velvet, silk, nylon or stretch foil the very primordial objects are confirmed and accentuated in their substantial structure.

My latest group of works – and the two pieces made at the Baegrak Temple – deal with the idea of a shell, sometimes cocoon, sometimes bark. The appearance of body is questioned by relating its surface, the skin, and its support, the skeleton. Outside – inside. The covered, the hidden. Protecting or held captive? Safe or struggling?

My art work movement to every country with me.

The main image of my art is traditional Mongolian ger, cart, pots and pans and colors of the four seasons.

These are important parts of the many tools of nomadic people’s way of living in the steppe.

Nomadic people have a very secretive and unique culture in the way they live in harmony with the nature and move throughout the four seasons of the year.

This culture which was passed on for many centuries is on the verge of being forgotten in today’s society and therefore it is important to keep it.

When I’m making a creation I get an idea from Mongolian folk tales and traditions. Also I try to reflect statecraft of nomads being close to nature and features of nomadic culture. I try to express inner connection of human and nature through outer shape and form. And I wish to express common style of human and animals the distance between human and animals that seems very far but yet so close.

HORNS The horns are animal’s organ of protecting themselves and to show their strength to others.

However, the horns were used by humans to distinguish the ‘unordinary’ ones of higher rank. The horns represented diverse meanings of power over others, authority, beauty and magic. In the other hand, it was an expression to obtain the power of nature. This culture has been kept until present and is used in traditional customs and rites as well as modern animated cartoons for children.

The basic idea of horns in my artworks is the ‘Balance’. For me, the horns are the ‘tangible form of intelligence’.

I print materials of nature on a lot of small papers. And I hang the prints between the trees.

The material of nature is small and does not usually attract attention from everybody.

I make the work which featured the theme of a gene and mutation evolution, resemblance and variety.

When I make the installation art, first I stare at the spirit of the place. And I hang the ball of water along the image that I felt from the place. The small ball of water exists in the place as a symbol of something.

Each water balls are very small presence, and fragile. Also those are like human being who are influenced by the environment. My work and the place is a part of each other and co-exist.

‘이동’ 을 위한 정서적 동물 백 곤_미학

조영철은 도시를 돌아다니며 전시를 한다. 그의 전시는 야생동물들을 도시 곳곳에 배치하고 일정한 시간이 지나면 다 시 다른 곳으로 이동시키는 과정을 포함한다. 아스팔트 위를 걷고, 파도가 일렁이는 서해안을 걷고, 수풀이 우거진 시 골길을 걷는다. 마치 야생동물이 그러하듯이 이 도시에서 저 도시로 유목을 위한 이동을 한다. 그에게 이‘이동’ 이라 는 단어는 아주 중요한 의미로 받아들여지는데, 조각이 권고한 권위를 가진 고체덩어리 조형물에서 벗어나 수많은 이 동을 함으로써 관객들과 가볍게 만난다는 점을 강조한다. 이동을 통해 조각은 단지 고형물이 아니라 끊임없이 관객들 과 이야기하는 살아있는 생명을 뿜어내고 있음을 증명한다. 관객들은 자연스럽게 그의 작품에 앉거나 올라타서 동물 들과 교감하며 조각을 살아 숨 쉬게 만든다. 작품의 정서는 자연과 동물, 인간이 서로 만나는 순간 생성된다. 스테인 리스 스틸 선으로 제작된 그의 작품은 바깥과 안을 구분하지 않고, 공기를 머금다가 이내 흘려보낸다. 자연의 이치를 닮은 정서, 자연의 질서에 순응하는 삶을 지향하듯 그의 네발짐승들 하나같이 자연에서의 호흡을 중시하며, 인간들에 게 이 호흡을 위해 자연으로‘이동’ 하라고 말한다. 이렇게 자연의 질서에 자신을 내맡기는 것이 바로 조영철이 추구 하고자 하는 야생동물의 정서이자 인간을 위한‘이동’ 의 미학인 것이다. 그렇기에 네발짐승인 말이 상징화되어 자동 차가 되고(Horse's Imagination), 보아뱀이 삼킨 코끼리(코끼리 상자)가 다시 자신의 몸 안에 전시와 행사를 위한 네모 난 공간을 마련하게 되는 것이다.

야생동물의 이동이 예술을 향한 정서적 이동으로 변화하는 것은 그들을 바라보는 시선이 이 동을 통해 서서히 바뀌고 있음을 시사한다. 이동은 단지 야생동물의 경우에서처럼 자신의 생 명유지를 위한 이동이 아니라 사물을 바라보는 예술적인 행위를 상상케 한다. 이는 실제 이 동하기 때문만이 아니라‘이동’ 이라는 단어가 가진 함의가 예술적 행위와 만남으로 인해 생 성되는 상승효과일 것이다. 바람을 담아내면서도 고스란히 흘려 보내주는 얇은 스테인리스 스틸 선의 야생동물은 자신의 네발을 가지고 끊임없이 이동하면서 동시에 예술의 가능성을 향해 유쾌한 움직임을 멈추지 않는다.

조영철의 조각은 조각이되 한 곳에 머물러 있지 않기 때문에 자유롭고 부드럽다. 환경에 따 라 변화하고, 공간에 따라 의미가 달라지는 그의 조각은 살아있는 생명체와 비슷하게 자신의 존재의미에 대해 끊임없이 되묻는다. 도시를 살아가는 수많은 사람들에게 자신의 존재를 알 리고 이를 통해 야생동물의 정서가 어디서부터 나왔는지, 어디로 이동하고 있는지를 알려주 는 그의 작품은 언제나 인간의 사유 한복판에 있다. 인간의 정서에 호소하는 미학적 의미들 을 그의 야생동물들이 전해주는 것과 같이 언제나 여러 물음들을 던진다. 자연과 야생동물, 그리고 인간이 함께 공존해야 할 지점들은 고착화된 개념이 아니라 이동을 통해 언제나 새롭 게 생성되고 정서적인 교감을 만들어내는 바로 그 지점에서 의미가 생성된다. 그렇기에 조영 철의‘이동’ 을 위한 혹은‘이동’ 을 향한 정서적 조각들은 살아 움직이는 생명체와 같이 사람 들 개개인의 정서에 하나둘씩 다가가 예술이라는 유쾌한 이야기를 풀어놓는 것이다.
