t is with great pleasure that I extend my best wishes to all those who through their commitment and passion have helped bring about this year’s Imagine Arts Festival. With over 80 events planned for this exciting time in Waterford I have no doubt that everyone attending will thoroughly enjoy this year’s festival. Now in its sixth year it is true to say that Imagine is a unique celebration of the arts in Waterford. The very full, varied and ambitious programme of events planned for this year’s festival truly has something for everyone. I am delighted to see that so many art forms -theatre, literature, dance, film, visual art and music are included in the programme. Among the many highlights are screenings of the critically acclaimed films Gainsbourg and The Illusionist; performances by The Phoenix Orchestra and the baritone singer Jack L; a production of Sean O’Casey’s masterpiece “The Plough and the Stars” and also an audience with the world renowned Irish author Joseph O’Connor.

Undoubtedly the Imagine festival will bring significant benefits to the local economy. Events such as this will drive the promotion of Ireland to both domestic and overseas visitors and will contribute significant economic benefits. Congratulations to all involved.

Ádh mór agus tá súil agam go mbeidh féile na bliana seo an ceann is fearr fós.

The voices of The Bothy Band, Coolfin, Altan and Clannad, four truly iconic Celtic women, have come together in this remarkable collaboration. Described by The Wall Street Journal as “the cleverest, most cunningly constructed, most assured play in years” The Beauty Queen of Leenane is a darkly comic thriller which portrays the ancient manipulative Mag and her virginal daughter, Maureen locked in a dance of mutual loathing which may be more durable than any love. Ben Barnes, whose production of this play won several major awards in North Americ, teams up with the internationally renowned designer, Todd Rosenthal (Tony and Olivier Awards for August Osage County) in his first Irish production of this award winning play. A 90-minute one-man show from writer and director Peter Sheridan, who conjures up the voices and accents of his 1960’s childhood. This is a coming of age story peopled with deliciously eccentric characters and surreally bizarre incidents.

‘Peter Sheridan writes at the crossroads where hilarity and heartbreak, tenderness and savagery meet. The people who live there are often cruel, often magnificent, and always, always human. He captures them perfectly.’ - Roddy Doyle

‘No-one today describes Irish themes with more profundity using a paintbrush’ - Oliver Sears Hughie O’Donoghue is an artist based in the West of Ireland with an international reputation having exhibited his work widely in museums around the world. Following his recent acclaimed solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Waterford Imagine Festival is delighted to show Salt Water an exhibition of recent paintings and oil sketches none of which have been exhibited in Ireland before. The theme of the sea has been | For

an ongoing preoccupation of the artist over the years and is referenced in all of these works. The upstairs gallery shows the monumental figure painting Cumae where a ship is visible on a distant horizon and other large scale oils on canvas.
