The Proposal
A survey of 110 women of different ages across 12 Indian cities revealed that: 64% walked within their neighborhoods to access daily goods/services & commute to work
In India, a man’s transit route is usually short and uncomplicated: often to & from work, whereas a woman’s is more complex & varied. As primary caregivers and members of the workforce, women often multitask between various domestic and wage-earning activities, which involve commuting to multiple places in a day. Currently, Indian cities focus on men and their work. The public infrastructure &64% services dowithin their walked not meet the needs of the complex role that women playneighborhoods or even set to access daily services and 64% goods walked&within their them up for success in their daily life. commute to work neighborhoods to access dailyWomen goods & services and Additionally, this issue is compounded further by safety factors. commute face street violence & harassment daily, making it difficult to go to towork work or stay late to finish a project—feeding into the vicious cycle of unequal compensation. When our streets and public spaces address the needs of women in mind, they serve everyone better—from older adults to people with disabilities to able-bodied people. By flipping the priorities to focus on women and girls ensures that streets will be vibrant, safer and comfortable for all people, including men. Hence, a 15-min city for women where urban living is inclusive, accessible, 43% haven’t tried/ didn’t have any need healthy and sustainable is more imperative than ever.
110 women of different ages across 12 Indian cities
Indian cities consist of 15-min neighborhoods, albeit inconsistently located throughout the city. 15 minutes in the sense that residences, amenities, and services are within a 15-minute walking distance for a citizen, however the path to access those amenities is broken, unsafe, universally inaccessible & dominated by men, thus rendering the 43% haven’t tried/ didn’t walkability of the neighborhood inadmissible. have any need to walk after 9pm tried/ didn’t 43% haven’t

In a hexagon, the diagonal movements result in shorter distances, thereby ensuring that a person spends less time travelling. Furthermore, a prescribed hexagon size, e.g. diameter of 1 mile, helps to prevent sprawl within the neighborhood thus guaranteeing compact and walkable neighborhoods within the city. 26% didn't feel safe walking after 9pm
