July 2019 An Interview With The Lizardtones
Dylan: That was such a good show. Isobel: Yeah, the crowd was going crazy that night. Jake: There’s actually a review of that show. The guy who reviewed it saw all of the bands until the Slow Boys got kicked out and he left. Isobel Abbott-Dethrow sat down with the Lizardtones in South City Mikey: A lot of people thought we cancelled… and spoke to its members, Jake, Evan, Dylan, and Mikey. Jake: Half of the crowd left after, but it was still a good time. Evan: If you really want to count it, we did play at a graduation party in 2016 under a pavilion in a park. They told us to turn it down, Isobel: How was the band formed? Is this the original lineup? because we were too loud. It was very awkward. Dylan: We all started playing together in high school at different Jake: I don’t think they knew what they were in for. times. I knew Jake first and he was friends with Mikey. They both Dylan: We got sixty bucks that night. took band classes. Isobel: What are some of your best memories playing live so far? Jake: We used to play jazz band together all the time. Mikey: Definitely Blueberry Hill--it was just awesome in the energy Mikey: I met Jake in second grade. We didn’t play music then but you get to feel when there’s a stage and people. I’ve known him forever. Jake: I was a special kind of drunk that night--kind of losing it. Dylan: We all go way back. We’ve been playing for a long time. I Evan: I really liked PorchFest when we played. Playing outside is guess the current lineup of the Lizardtones, as it stands right now, really crazy. was formed in 2016 after we moved to college for a year, then Dylan: There’s definitely something about playing outdoors. dropped out. Mikey: I got to be on a porch alone and the drums were surrounded by a rock thing. It was cool.
Isobel: When you create music, do the lyrics or melody drive the song? Dylan: Definitely the melody, one hundred percent. The way we usually do songs, we have an idea of a little melody or jingle sometimes; we start with a demo of that and then we add other instruments on top of a big guitar. The vocals usually come last. Mikey: Right now, it is pretty interesting because our practice space is at Lemp, which is just down the street. If we are all working that day, say if somebody has an idea, it is all on the computer there; if other people aren’t there, you can just go work on it and somebody else will find it later. Dylan: It’s really cool; it’s all of us falling off each other. One person will have an idea for this guitar move or someone will write a bass line and then one of us will say, ‘Oh, this would be really great on top of that!’, ‘I have this idea that would work well with your idea.’ Evan: There’s a slicing up of songs going on. We fuse them together. Isobel: Have you been on tour anywhere yet? Jake: Not yet. We just got started in January. Dylan: As far as live shows go. Jake: Our first, official show was at Blueberry Hill in February. 6

Isobel: What has been your favorite venue to play at in St. Louis? Jake & Dylan: Off Broadway. Dylan: Hands down. Jake: The Slow Boys album release show was fun to put together. It was all people we’re friends with; I’ve been friends with the Ragstripes since I was fourteen or fifteen--we all have, basically. And the Ragstripes have been playing since then, too, so I’m not sure why they don’t gig as much as they should. But yeah, that show was awesome. Mikey: They’re all so nice, the Slow Boys and the Ragstripes. We all got to hang out before and after the show. Jake: There ended up being a big party at the apartment after.
Isobel: So if you could tour with any other local band, who would it be and why? Jake: If I had to pick somebody, I really liked Jackie Presley. I saw them at LouFest at Foam… they are really cool. Max is on the guitar and he kills it. They have a single out right now. I like everybody in that band. Dylan: Obviously, the Slow Boys(*). The Ragstripes, too.
GessoMagazine.com
July 2019 Mikey: The Public is cool. Or Dracla (*); that band is interesting. They haven’t played in a little bit, but I work with the person who used to be the head guy. He dresses up as Dracula and he’s in character the whole time and he plays this really cool bass. It’s some indie rock and it’s good. (*) – Slow Boys & Dracla are playing Jackal Fest 2019 @ 2720 Cherokee on 07/20
Mikey: For me, there is a big difference between the EP and the album. When you put something out, especially when you are doing the next thing, you realize how hard it is to get the take that you’ll be happy with it a week later, or a year or five years later. I definitely remember not taking too long to do the EP, but I love the way it sounds. Yet it seems that with every single album now, you have to grind for the takes a lot more. Evan: We definitely tried a lot harder on the album. Isobel: Who are some of your musical influences? Jake: But we definitely clocked it all out in one day. We used most of Dylan: The biggest one of them all would be No Doubt. We are a the takes. big fan of Gwen Stefani and her work. Mikey: Yeah, I did the drums for the album in one day. It was Evan: Tragic Kingdom is a perfect album. There is not a bad track on stressful. that album. Jake: We had to go back on a few tracks, but most of it was done in Mikey: I really like No Doubt and I got Tragic Kingdom from a day. Goodwill one time. That was a great day. Evan: Mikey had a monster session. Evan: Gwen’s the hero, for sure. Dylan: TOPS is also a really good band. Isobel: Do you have any plans for the next album? Have you Jake: They are so underrated… they are one of the best bands. started on any new material? Mikey: I think the Voidz are really cool and I like a lot of fusion jazz. Dylan: There is another album in the works. As of right now, it I like metal, too. is fifteen tracks long. We are thinking we will have to split it and Dylan: We like to think we have a collective taste. Possibly, maybe… make two separate releases. Or not...we’ll see. The bottom line is we try. that there is so much more to release that we have written and are working on. Evan: We have harddrives filled with demos. Jake: You are going to be expecting music very soon, probably in the next couple of months. Mikey: Definitely by the end of the year. For more information on the Lizardtones: https://www.facebook.com/thelizardtones/
Isobel: What lessons did you learn from producing your EP, Maple Syrup Moments, and how did you apply those to your album, The Lizardtones? Did it go smoother or help the end result? Dylan: It definitely did not go smoother. With Maple Syrup, we had a scarlet interface, a MacBook, and some guitars. It was basically, ‘Let’s just record this on a computer and it’ll be good enough.’ With the album, it was a lot of testing different things out, different effects and even recording techniques, just trying to see what worked and did not. It took us a lot longer to complete, but in the end, I think that was a good thing. Evan: We did it in a stuffy, tiny room, where it was a hundred degrees. Dylan: The conception of that album started when Evan and I spent https://thelizardtones.bandcamp.com/ a year recording guitars in a room half the size we’re in right now. Mikey: You said somebody killed himself in there? Jake: I said that; it’s all part of the urban legend of the Lemp family. Dylan: Evan and I locked ourselves in that room for a year playing guitar and sweating because there was no air conditioning in there. We were trying to figure out how to write songs and record, basically. GessoMagazine.com Gesso Magazine

The Sweet Voice of Alexandra Kay by Paul Seibert
I recently had the privilege of covering Alexandra Kay at Syberg’s Restaurant in O’Fallon (IL). She was performing there for the Saturday night dinner crowd, accompanied by another favored local musician, Jeff “Schmitty” Schmitz. Both of them were such crowd pleasers; and were so gracious in their working with me while I videoed their performance. Alexandra Kay is young, vibrant, and puts on a beautiful show. She is a country music performer with a stunning voice. Alexandra writes much of her own music and does great credence to so many of those great country covers. And Alexandra is local. Born in Chesterfield (MO) and raised in Waterloo (IL), Alexandra Kay has made a name for herself. Yes, she landed that coveted recording contract and tried that route for awhile. But ultimately she gave that up to get back the creative freedom she so desired - to do the music she wants, the way she wants to do it. Rightfully, she got good screen time on American Idol (2011). And she earned a place with eight other “struggling” musicians on the unscripted Netflix series ‘Westside’ that premiered in November. Primarily, it is her work from home on social media and her live performances that have brought her to where she is now. Alexandra says her influences include Garth Brooks, Martina McBride and Jo Dee Messina. And it’s for Jo Dee Messina that she will open in concert at the Lincoln Theatre in Belleville (IL) on August 1. She will again be accompanied there by local musician, Jeff “Schmitty” Schmitz, with whom she often works.

July 2019 About performing on the same stage as Jo Dee Messina, Alexandra said, “I’m so excited, I’m ecstatic. She’s like my favorite. It’s gonna be a dream come true. Some of the first songs I remember ever singing were her songs. Just taking a picture with her will be amazing. Playing in front of her I think is something that is going to blow me away.” Alexandra has been referred to as an “internet phenomenon” and has over 250,000 followers on Facebook. Her homemade online videos have hit records of views in the MILLIONS. Her studio singles are available on all of the expected download platforms. She is eternally grateful to her fans to whom she says “Thank you so much for staying with me all these years, for watching ‘Westside’, for supporting everything I’ve ever done. I can’t wait to see you on the road this summer. I can’t wait to get you the music I’m recording in Nashville this summer”
“I’ve always felt that music, especially country music, has been a blessing in my life. Country music has a strong emphasis on the lyrics. That’s what people relate to, that tears your heart up, or makes it soar. That’s what drew me to country music in the beginning and it’s very important in the songs I choose.”
And having fans nationwide, Alexandra tours. I first covered her at Silver Creek Saloon in Belleville this winter when her multi-state tour brought her close to home. She is again foraying out on a 22-city “Dive Bar Dreamer” tour beginning July 6th in Louisville (KY). That will take her up and down the east coast and through the Midwest and bring her home just in time for her August 1st appearance at the Lincoln Theatre in Belleville (IL). And after you see her there, you can enjoy an encore at Hidden Lake Winery in Aviston (IL) on August 3rd, after which she will hit the trail again for the remainder of the month.

And you can be a part of that movement by supporting Gesso Magazine. Contact us to contribute content, information, works of creativity, or otherwise becoming involved. July 2019 Cover Artist Mark Polege by Henry Collins
This month’s cover artist is Mark Polege. Mark is a self-taught photographer and photo-journalist. As evident in this cover image, he is especially adept at low-light photography.
Mark found his interest in film photography while in high school in St Louis. A 6-year stint in North Dakota took him into vast stretches of wilderness and farm country where black and white images of abandoned farms and other rustic features obsessively captured the eye of his camera. Upon return to the St Louis area, Mark transitioned to digital photography and experienced a revival of his interest in architectural images. Positions with the Belleville News Democrat and the Edwardsville Intelligencer allowed him to hone his skills in color correction. Mark is also a web designer / developer. Much of his professional energies go into creating and maintaining state-of-the-art websites. As the principle of Markus Design Works, Mark combines the skills and talents of photography, web design and retail sales and advertising to create maximum visual impact for his clients. An example of his expertise would be GessoMagazine.com, the website of Gesso Magazine and his own professional websites listed below. See more of Mark Polege at:
http://photographyofmarkpolege.com/
Mark Polege’s photographic artwork is an exploration in perspective and depth, and a story written in a tapestry of light. His pieces capture the past while harnessing color and composition into bookmarks of time and space. Mark was previously featured in Str8Up Magazine in December 2013 and was recently featured in The Legends Magazine in Eureka (MO). Mark’s 6-image color panoramic “Moon Over St Louis” was featured in “The City at 250: A Citywide Celebration in Photography”, June 6 - August 23, 2014 at the Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries. The exhibition was a culmination of a citywide photo contest begun in the fall of 2013 and ending on February 23, 2014, which marked the 250th anniversary of the founding of St. Louis. Likewise, this magnificent image is featured as the “centerfold” in the hard-covered commemorative book “The City at 250”, published by the Sheldon Art Gallery.

His work is currently on display in the Gesso Magazine Exhibition at the Governor French Gallery in Belleville (IL). An ongoing project, “Churches Under God”, highlights the founding of historic churches and the challenges they faced, along with the religious and charitable contributions they provide to their neighborhoods and the world. And through his vivid color photographs, Mark highlights and preserves the glory of architecture, stained glass and statuary that is synonymous with these, sometimes fading, institutions. 24

You are cordially invited to volume number five! This left column of games will remain the same trusty games with a different setup each month, while the right column will introduce new games monthly. Want to support more games like these? Want next month’s issue before it goes to print?Join our patreon at: Patreon.com/DankByDesign Bring as many eggs to the exit of the dungeon as you can carrying them in your inventory. Each skeleton is worth 1VP when defeated but undefeated costs 1 heart (1VP) when encountered. If you have no hearts you may not cross over a skeleton without a sword. Items are one time use! All items take 1 inventory slot and if you have empty inventory slots you must pick it up. Use of any item means it is discarded and items may not be discarded without first using them. Eggs may never be discarded. You may cross a space more than once. Dark spaces require the use of one torch to travel through each time, even if already traveled through before. Unlike previous dungeons you may not travel diagonally; now until further notice. Start at the S and end at the E.
Sword- Defeats 1 skeleton Torch- Travel through 1 dark space Key- Unlock 1 chest or 1 door
Word Pie is for 2-4 players. Each player needs 3 pawns of their own color and a pencil. Players score points by playing words into the grid. Words must be at least 4 letters long. Players track words/points on a sheet of paper. 4 letter words are worth 1 point, 5 letter words are worth 2 points, 6 letter words are worth 3 points and so on. The game ends whenever there’s not enough spaces left to play a four letter word onto the board. The player with the highest score wins. You must move a pawn OR play a complete word on your turn. Words may be formed backward or forward, up, down, left or right but not diagonally. You play words onto the grid composed of letters contained in the slices of the circular letter board. The words you play may use some or all of the letters in the slices of the board that each pawn occupies. You may use two letters for each pawn you have on the board to form your words. These two letters may be both of the two letters on the slice or two of one of the letters in the slice. Once the first word is played all other words must be played sharing a letter with words already on the board. The first word should cross through the center. Any letter you interact with on the grid must form actual words. Words less than four letters long formed on the grid by playing a four letter or higher word score 1 point each regardless of length. Unless it is more than 4 letters in which case it scores as normal. The stars on the circular board allow you to play a star on the grid into a space orthogonally adjacent to a letter already on the grid as a “divider.” This lets you create words sharing sides with the square the star is in. You may not jump your own pawns but must jump other players pawns (not counting the slice they’re on when counting how many spaces you are moving one of your own pawns.) To get one of your 3 pawns in play on the letter board you simply move it from the center circle to any slice you wish not yet occupied by any other pawn. You may move only one pawn each turn, and may only move it up to two slices around the letter board clockwise (not counting enemy pawns skipped
Egg- Score 2VP when brought to E Ice- May not turn on ice unless if stopped by a dark space or edge. Chest- Score 5VP when unlocked Warp- Transports you to any other warp, any time you step onto one. Door- Blocks travel in all directions.
Escaping this room requires you to figure out the password for the door. Solve the password based on how many letters long the code is, the selection of letters you have to choose from and what the room looks like! You may use a letter more than once. Check back each month for the password to escaping from last month’s room! Volume #4’s Password: “SHED”

July 2019 Rachel Cima Art has always been a passion of mine. I was homeschooled from 1st grade- High school and art became an outlet for me at an early age. I’ve worked with digital photography, jewelrymaking, digital art, and flow arts. This year is the first year I’ve felt comfortable enough with my artistic ability to put my work out there and it’s been an extremely rewarding experience. My preferred medium is currently acrylic paint mixed with my own pouring recipe. It’s a messy process and it takes a while to perfect the ratio, but its well worth the effort. Paint pouring has become a part of my day-to-day life, I started working with this style back in February and it’s completely taken over my life in the best way possible. It’s my favorite style to work with because there are so many neat things you can do with it and each piece is completely original in its own special way. Paint pouring is a lot harder than it may look, and at times it can be very disappointing to watch some of your best work run off the canvas, never to be seen again. It’s bittersweet, but it teaches you how to be able to appreciate things in the moment, preserving what you can, and letting go of what you can’t. When people look at my art I often want to remind them and encourage them to pick it up, flip it around, tilt it and turn it and see what you can find within the colors and the cells. My art is not meant to be viewed from my perspective alone and I love when people pick up my pieces and find things in them I haven’t found yet. It adds a whole new layer of meaning to that piece. My future plans would be learning how to pour and mix colors with resin and honing my texture skills to achieve 3D cell effects. I also would like to get better with pigments and mixing my own pearlescent colors. I can be reached via email: r.cimacreations@gmail.com

Dalton is 12 years old, a student in Belleville public schools and is currently taking art classes at 1020 Artworks Studio in Belleville. Dalton loves to draw - his teachers and his family contacted us about his drawing talent and sent us these artworks on his behalf. Dalton finds doing artwork to be fun and therapeutic. And he said he is honored and excited to have his work be submitted for publication. We are pleased to publish Dalton’s artwork. We hope you will enjoy his work like we do. Perhaps his work will inspire other young people to pursue their artistic talents. And, perhaps, submit them to Gesso Magazine as well! Even If I Was Immortal, I’d Invent Death Even in a thousand years a man will exhale the same way the weight of life and at the same time be afraid of death. Each of us has one broken, round, useless piece of the kaleidoscope while waiting in line for the abyss that we....selected and hope it will change the fate of an uncertain future. We were created to love someone, to be loved. Not only of that, but to mark the birth of memories with every day going back into the voice of time, sifting through images of thoughts, placing them in the best light, just the way that we would like to be. All of us. We all want to have a distinctive character, to be different, special and yet not out of standards. Different enough so that someone can notice and see us in different aspects. I’m watching you; you are watching me, trying to see who we are when the lights of the social life goes out, when there is just me and a blurred reflection in the mirror. All of us have at least a fraction wish to be the one next to us, because the one next to us is looking in a better direction. Art of life is more valuable. You’re filling black and white calendars of your life... You go through old yellowed diaries of memories where you saved the first kiss, the first falling off of a bike, love at first sight, second or third sight, the old image when you were all together, first haircut with tears in the eyes and the last thought before this one. Then you realize that you’re lucky you shaped your back with pride. Yes you might be afraid of this, you may not smell the end; the opium of black glitter, but sometimes maybe not now, but sometime everything will be under a marbled sky, small jerked letters to make up your name, followed by two dates and the only thing that will be evidence that I was here is what that dash between the numbers encompasses. I invented death to be convinced into the beauty of life, where art of living is more valuable than any shiny marble or an engraved name.
