From Grain to Glass: It’s All in the Family by John Dorroh
During my recent visit to Portland, Oregon, I was mesmerized by all of the establishments that serve craft beer. I’ve heard all my life that they like their beer – and coffee – up there in the Great Northwest, but to be immersed in the culture did good things for my soul. Verifying various crafter’s claims, forming hypotheses, collecting data, you understand. It’s part of the scientific process. Most of the breweries create their delectable concoctions on the premises. Their “labs” range in size from that of an average basement to a city block. There were lagers and porters, IPAs and APAs; stouts and ales, oh my. And most of the ingredients are locally sourced. It’s almost law. But that was then and this is now.

October 2019 I have an eclectic collection of taste buds, and that often works to my advantage. Highly adaptable yet discerning, my “buds” help me decide when it’s time to add new items to their repertoire. For example, in the last year I have acquired a taste for bourbon.
“It’s all about the taste of a region,” said Adam. “Our approach is quality into the barrel, quality out of the barrel… when you’re distilling bourbon, there’s a romance about it.”
There are talks among close friends and acquaintances of experiencing the Bourbon Trail in Kentucky and parts of Tennessee. More sampling, merely for the sake of science, right?
“Working with the public is where I feel at home. So, running our store front and managing our team is perfect for me. I love it!” she said.
Hold on! I may not have to go to Louisville or to the town where Maker’s Mark is produced. I’ve found a local spot in Columbia, Illinois, where they grow their own grains – corn, wheat, barley, and rice – on an eight-generation farm. Three-hundred acres of land for grain-growing and a nine-acre distillery. Talk about locally sourced! To make the situation even more enticing, they use fresh limestone filtered water as a base and maintain complete control of the entire process, including growing the grain, harvesting, milling, mashing, fermenting, and distilling small-batch spirits at their finest. What could be better? A bit of history
Although Laura has two degrees in science, she enjoys working with people.
A bit about the tasting room, tours, and other tidbits The Stumpfs invite you to take an in-depth look at everything they do at the distillery. Tours allow visitors to see first-hand the parts of the production process. From cleaning the harvested grain to mashing; from fermenting to distilling and bottling. In about 45 minutes you will have a better understanding of what goes into each and every sip of that precious product. It’s important for each tour to have the optimal number of participants. Please call or e-mail at least 24 hours ahead to make a reservation. Tour times are as follows: Thursday/Friday 3 PM
Adam and Laura Stumpf, owners, shared some history of Stumpy’s Spirits Distillery.
Saturday 1, 2, 3, 4, & 5 PM Sunday 2, 3, & 4 PM
“My great, great, great, great grand-father on my mother’s side was deeded The tasting room hours are as follows: 200 acres of the original farm for a dollar,” said Adam. “That farm remained in Thursday/Friday 1-5 PM my mom’s family for three generations,” he said. “Then my mom’s family in 1904 sold it to my dad’s family. Eighty years later my parents got married.”
Saturday 12-6 PM
Stumpy’s is now four years old. Mainly a tasting station, there are plans to enlarge their capacity and to extend services. On October 5th from 4-10 PM Stumpy’s will be the site of a Fall Festival with several food trucks. “We also conduct tours,” said Laura. “The cost is ten dollars per person and includes samples, a cocktail and a Stumpy’s souvenir glass.” What’s it take to make it work? First of all, you have to have some smarts about how things work. A science background, for example, doesn’t hurt. Adam graduated from the University of Missouri Science &Technology at Rolla, Missouri, with a degree in mechanical engineering and a minor in business. Adam received his MBA from Washington University and took an entrepreneur course where he was required to develop a business plan for a potential company. He developed Stumpy’s Spirits and pitched the idea to Olin Cup Business Competition at Wash U’s Entrepreneurship Center where he was a finalist. Laura and Adam used the plan to get Stumpy’s off the ground, and they also entered the plan in SIUE’s StartUp Competition where they earned 2nd place. Furthermore, working at Anhueser Busch while he was obtaining his MBA certainly didn’t hurt. Not only does one have to know a bit about how things work, but there needs to be a love for the work. Some call it passion. Others insist that it’s just good ole hard work. I believe it’s both.

* And then there’s Old Monroe Pecan Pie Flavored Whiskey (60 proof). It’s a seasoned blend of unaged wheated bourbon, toasted pecans, and both brown and white sugars. Really, this stuff could be used in the kitchen in oh so many ways. * There’s Old Monroe Lemon Drop Flavored Whiskey (60 proof), made from unaged wheated bourbon, a ton of lemons and sugar. * Old Monroe Honey Flavored Whiskey (60 proof) is made from unaged whiskey bourbon and a rich clover honey. This whiskey just won Top Pours in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch competition for the best specialty whiskey. Kudos! * Unbroken Peach Vodka uses fresh peaches from nearby Eckert’s Farms. * Unbroken Green Apple Vodka uses fresh Golden Delicious apples from Eckert’s Farms. * Eighth Gin is a super-clean gin whose name is a reference to the eighth-generation farm. Your gin & tonics will never be the same. * Old Monroe American Single Malt is Stumpy’s first ever Distiller’s Select Whiskey and was released September 28th. Did I leave anything out? Possibly. You’ll just have to take a trip to the distillery and see for yourself. In conclusion Hand-crafted spirits seem to be in vogue, but so few pull it off well. There are exceptions: Stumpy’s Spirits and Distillery in Columbia, Illinois. It’s one of the few distilleries in this part of the country that fully utilizes available resources to produce such wonderfully pure products.
Tours, tastings, full bottle sales, and merchandise are available during normal business hours. Stumpy’s staff also offers consulting services. The whiskey and such
Just as the hand-crafted beers in Portland made me sit up and pay attention, so have the spirits at Stumpy’s Spirits Distillery. I think it’s time to pay tribute to artisans such as Laura and Adam Stumpf and to give them the attention that they deserve. It’s all in the family. Stumpy’s Spirits Distillery
When I visited Stumpy’s Distillery last week, I couldn’t wait to sample. I had a problem, however. Which one should I sample first? So, I started in the order that the bottles were lined up.
1727 Centerville Rd, Columbia, Illinois 62236 (618) 281-7733
www.Facebook.com/StumpysSpirits/ * Old Monroe Single Barrel Select Bourbon Whiskey. (The samples were small, you understand – about ¼ ounce – and that’s good when you have many from which to choose. Back to the story…) This particular bourbon whiskey is 90 proof, crafted from a signature blend of corn, winter wheat, and barley malt. It’s aged in charred Missouri oak barrels and goes down smooth. www.StumpysSpirits.com * Next, I sampled the Unbroken Vodka, which is 80 proof and is soft, silky, and smooth. Filtered through a custom blend of activated charcoal to give it a slightly sweet taste, it has an incredibly refreshing character. They use the term “unbroken” because they harvest, mill, mash, ferment, and bottle everything on site, leaving the chain unbroken. A beautiful thing indeed.

October 2019 An Interview with Inches From Glory
Isobel: (For Kelly) Since you are also in Jackie Presley, how do you find time or management to play for two bands while a full-time by Isobel Abbott-Dethrow student? Kelly: I don’t really have a lot of free time, which is fine. It keeps me Isobel Abbott-Dethrow sat down with the members of St. Louis busy. This is a better question for Blake, since he’s in more bands band Inches From Glory: Marty, Kelly*, and Blake. than me. *Kelly is also a member of Jackie Presley. Blake: You don’t get a lot of free time. I remember last year, last semester, I didn’t want to play music anymore. I had music at school and outside of school. I teach music, so I was really burnt Isobel: How did Inches From Glory come together? out for a while, but summer helped out with that. Good time Blake: For the most part, it was my solo project. I started it when management is really important. I keep a very detailed, color coded I was about thirteen. I was listening to Rise Against a lot; I was calendar, so that’s really helpful. I try being aware of the time I have the worst kind of punk kid. Then, I found Title Fight and thought and not be stingy about it; I make an hour everyday to sit at home, they were the best band ever. I started writing more in that emo play video games, and be a human being. Becoming aware of your style, getting a bit more mathy with it. For a long time, it was just schedule and being consistent about it helps. me--I had no intention to play a show. Then, I met Kelly through a Isobel: I like how you describe your music as “jangly punk rock.” mutual friend and we talked a lot and had the same music taste. What drove you to produce this type of music? What has influenced Initially, I asked, “Hey, you want to be in a band?” you? Kelly: You sent me the EP and I listened to it in the car. I thought Blake: It comes from a lot of influences. All of us are from a little it was really good. I kept listening to it and thought, I’ll be in this different music backgrounds, but still gear in the same sense. Kelly band for sure. listens to a lot more mathier stuff than me. I’m more on the emo, Blake: I knew Marty because we worked together. second wave emo side; I also really love jazz and 80s alternative such as the Cure and the Smiths. Marty: We only worked a week together. Marty: I grew up listening to Gorillaz and Phoenix. I like more Blake: I worked at STL Rock School in 2016, then I quit. Marty electronic, hip-hoppy music. It also explains why I stuck with the started a couple months after I quit, then I came back. Marty is drums. It feels the most natural with those interests. definitely one of the best drummers I know who is into anything punk related. It basically started as a solo project, then these Isobel: I remember my first time seeing and hearing about you guys beautiful people came in. being the Lobby Boxer EP release show at the Duck Room in April. What was that night like for you guys? Blake: Oh my God, that was so good. Kelly: No one really came for our set, but it was still fun. Blake: I was going through a really bad breakup at the time, during that show. I feel like I put a lot more into that show than I did in a long time. It was the day of, it was bad. Kelly: It was very emo. You poured your heart out. Blake: For sure. That show brought me back a little bit, thinking there’s still more outside of being in a relationship, like, “Hey, I have something else and this is pretty cool.” Especially with Lobby Boxer, because they are one of the bands that showed me that you don’t have to be famous to write music. Zach used to be my guitar teacher. It was an absolute honor to play with them. Marty: Not only are they so good at what they do, they are also good people. They are really easy to talk to; it was very humbling to play with them. Isobel: Is it difficult being full-time students while regularly performing shows? Kelly: It’s not as hard as you think, at least for me. Blake: I would say it is because I’m also a music student; I’m a Jazz Performance major, so I already have really high credit hours. I do other gigs on top of this band. Kelly: Blake is in like, twenty bands. Blake: I would say it is difficult to move around my schedule, but the band takes a lot of priority on top of other things. I mean, it’s definitely doable. Marty: I’m not in college, but I work as much as they are in school. I dropped out in 2015 after the first semester in community college. I left before finals and thought I was just going to work. Kelly: I’m in two bands, I just recorded for Jackie Presley earlier. It’s kind of a lot sometimes. 24

October 2019 Isobel: What was your first ever performance? Marty: Josh’s basement show in Wentzville. Blake: That was a really fun show. Kelly: The cops came. Blake: We did not know we were going to play until the day of. Marty: My friends and I wanted to put a basement show together. There were two people I’ve played shows with sometimes with since I was nineteen and we decided to throw a house show on New Years’ Day. I just started playing with Kelly and Blake then and it went so well. It was so cool. Blake: People actually moshed to our set. Marty: Blake cried. Blake: I did cry after our set, I was really happy. It was my first time playing a punk show. Kelly: It was also my first show ever. Isobel: What has been your favorite show to date? Are there any shows in the future that people should look out for? Blake: Lobby Boxer is up there. Kelly: The first show we played at Foam. There were so many people; my energy was up that day because of it. Marty: Lobby Boxer. Also, one of our shows at the Sinkhole. The first time we played there was really fun. Blake: It was great; I just got a new bass. Kelly: Aaron Plays, as well. It was a little house festival in Hillsboro with six bands. It was fun. Blake: Aaron Plays was one of my favorite shows. That was the first time seeing one of my favorite local bands, Reeling. It was a big show for me because Old State was there, and they and Lobby Boxer are the two bands that made me realize that writing music is cool. Aaron from Old State is in Reeling. Kelly: It was his show at his parents’ house. There was barbecue and spaghetti. Marty: It was a sweaty show. Blake: With shows to look out for, we have a show on October 9th. Kelly: Look for an EP release show, maybe. Isobel: How has your music progressed since the EP, ‘Sorry’, was released? Blake: We’ve definitely been a lot more collaborative. Kelly: Blake wrote the first EP. Blake: It was all me for ‘Sorry’. I had no input whatsoever from anybody else, no one told me, “Hey, this is bad.” I think it turned out pretty well, but everything that went into it was all me. I still am mostly writing songs, but Kelly will tell me if something is bad. I’ll write more towards what you and Marty play. We haven’t done any massive stylistic change; it’s pretty much still straight emo and more genuine. ‘Sorry’ was emotionally taxing for me to write, but we’re all in it together. Kelly: Like High School Musical. Isobel: Will you be releasing anything soon? Blake: We are in the studio right now. Kelly: We are recording with Aaron Fisher (from Jackie Presley). Jackie Presley is also recording that EP, so it’s fun recording with Aaron and having two bands at the same time. Blake: There is a little bit of an overlap, but it’s nice. We have something done. It’s a process, just trying to get time for
everything. The songs need to be more solid before we go in fullfledged. It might be released late October if we are lucky. Let’s just say fall, maybe winter. Isobel: Who are your favorite STL bands to listen to or perform with? Marty: Since I graduated high school, Foxing is definitely one of them. They were super prominent at that time. Kelly: They were my favorite band in high school, for sure. My roommate was in Foxing for a brief period and helped mix their first album. I still love Foxing. We play with the Public a lot. Marty: I love the Slow Boys. Blake: Lobby Boxer, definitely. I really like Reeling. Frankie Valet is awesome. Kelly: Jr. Clooney might be my favorite. They are so good, but we never played with them. They’re just really fun to watch. Blake: We’re playing with Sparring three times. Marty: Who Goes There is so good. Blake: Chiller Whale is my friend’s band. They are more indie pop. My friend Carrie is their guitarist and a really awesome musician. Isobel: Per the request of an anonymous person, can you explain what #BadTakeBlake is? Kelly: #BadTakeBlake happened when I was hanging with Jackie Presley at Little Caesar’s. Blake tweeted something about Jazzmaster Pickups and it was wrong. Blake: I said you can’t play shoegaze without a Jazzmaster, that you can’t use a fuzz without having a Jazzmaster. It was stupid. Kelly: I read the tweet out loud and Max came up with #BadTakeBlake. Someone replied with the hashtag and it stuck. Blake: I know I have pretty not good opinions sometimes and I’m very vocal. I say terrible things on Twitter. Half the time they are wrong, half the time I’m trying to be funny. It’s not working. I’m 100% for #BadTakeBlake. Kelly: All of the credit goes to Max. Blake: We love you, Max. https://inchesfromglory.bandcamp.com/

October 2019 Community Beautification Project by Nicole Ellie
This community beautification project was a partnership between artist Jessica Canale, her previous students at North Side Community School in St. Louis, and the group Better Family Life. The goal was to effectively board up and beautify several vacant homes surrounding the school, specifically those on St. Louis Avenue and North Euclid Avenue. After having the boards dropped off to her classroom, Canale said, “I took it as an opportunity to discuss with students what they would like to see in their community. What inspires them? What bothers them? We worked together for months developing brainstorm sketches and pre-planning designs to go on each of the boards. It was a wonderful way to show students how a little ingenuity and hard work - and, of course, paint - can really make a change for the better.” Students decided they wanted to show strong, influential, African-American people in their works surrounded by words of positivity and hope. Jessica Canale worked with students portraying musician Nelly, poet Maya Angelou, and poet/rapper Tupac Shakur. Unfortunately, the Tupac board was stolen shortly after the project was installed. “We also wanted to have some unique works to portray positivity and hope within the community. Our art club students landed on a typography-style design, incorporating the letter spelling out ‘create’ along with drawing a young child on a ladder painting in the world. The success and general fulfillment felt by students after the boards were installed in their neighborhoods made all the time and effort well worth it.”

October 2019 Knock Knock, Who’s There???... by Carrie Paul Autumn has finally arrived! After a long blistering summer of humid temperatures, it is a welcome respite from the heat. We are blessed in the Midwest with beautiful, glorious fall foliage, whose brilliant colors inspire us to do things outdoors. The gold hues are a color like a magic elixir of sorts, as hot apple ciders temp us to sip and savor. Burgundy hues which mimic fine wines allure us to come enjoy the outdoor spaces and linger a tad longer on patios, decks, and front porches. Wineries and outdoor brewery gardens explode in popularity with their Oktoberfest celebrations, chili cook-offs, and tastings. The chance to observe All Hallow’s Eve, remembering the dead and those who came before us is also part of the season. Halloween has always been a favorite holiday of mine for part of the fun lies in dressing up in costume and going door to door telling jokes for a treat or hitting a party or two. When I was a child, I would always ask my cousin for the latest “knock knock” jokes and a few other riddles, so I could be prepared to get a plastic pumpkin head full of my favorite candies by the end of night. Speaking of breweries and the dead, Saint Louis, Missouri and Alton, Illinois have both been coined as being one of the “ten most haunted places in America” by some popular ghost hunting television shows and paranormal investigative teams. Alton is known as “one of the most haunted small towns in America” according to Fate magazine and its visitor brochure.
Saint Louis has too many spooky tales to tell in the space of this article, including a famous exorcism. But one of the most notorious and well-known suicide and spirit stories is the haunted tale of the Lemp family, whose brewery and mansion are located in South Saint Louis in the Benton Park neighborhood. The Lemp’s came to prominence as a premier brewing family around the time the infamous Anheuser-Busch Brewery was rising in popularity, in the mid 1800’s. Johann Adam Lemp immigrated to America from Germany in the early 1800’s and around 1838, he opened a store at what is today Sixth Street downtown near where the Saint Louis Arch now stands. Adam began brewing lager beer and selling it at his grocery store, and it soon rose in popularity so much so, he needed more space for the production of the product. He found a limestone cave south of the city limits near what today is Cherokee and De Menil Place in the Benton Park Neighborhood, and purchased the property using the cave for lagering purposes. Adam Lemp called his business The Lemp Western Brewing CO. and left the company to his son, William J. Lemp, Sr. when he passed away. 30
Gesso Magazine
William J. Lemp, Sr. moved the actual brewery above the cave and expanded the brewery into a huge complex, taking advantage of new technologies of the era. A bottling plant was built, and the advent of refrigeration allowed production of beer to skyrocket. William had seven children, the eldest of whom, Frederick, was set to inherit the business. William Lemp purchased a mansion home for his family a short distance away from the brewery complex on De Menil Place and a series of tunnels connected the home with the caves and caverns of the brewery complex. A pool, theater, and other interesting things were built underground as time elapsed. In 1901, Frederick’s health was beginning to fail, and he died prematurely at the age of 28. His death caused his father, William Sr. to enter into a deep depression and take his own life in the mansion. William committed suicide around the time of the World’s Fair in 1904 by using a .38 caliber revolver. He was buried at Bellefountaine Cemetery next to his son Frederick in the family mausoleum. William Lemp Jr. soon took over the business and permanently moved into the mansion.
William Lemp Jr., aka Billy, inherited a great fortune as did his siblings. When he took over the complex, prohibition soon hit and the Volstead Act passed, while his personal life with his wife Lillian began to crumble. He went through a nasty public divorce, and later closed the brewery selling it for fraction of what it was worth to the International Shoe Company. Billy later committed suicide in the mansion. Elsa, Billy’s youngest sister, also was reported to have committed suicide at her Central West End home, although some say she was murdered. Charles and Edwin, two of Billy’s brothers were the only two siblings left in Saint Louis. Charles moved into the mansion but became quite reclusive and ill and by age 77 was compulsive in behavior. It was rumored he wore gloves often to try to protect himself from germs. He was a bachelor and lived in the mansion with two of his servants. It is rumored he grew quite eccentric never wanting to leave the house. He committed suicide in the mansion with a .38 caliber revolver and left a note which read, “In case I am found dead blame it on no one but me” and signed it (Haunted Saint Louis, pg. 147). Many years later the mansion was turned into a boarding house. The house declined in the 1960’s but was purchased by a man named Dick Pointer in the 1970’s. The Pointer’s began remodeling the house to convert it into a restaurant and inn and it was then the strange occurrences began happening. Many of the workers who were working on restorations reported feelings of being watched, doors opening and

October 2019 closing, and tools they used being moved across rooms. Levitating objects, candles moving across the bar, voices and footsteps have all been reported by people who work there. A piano that was in the house was reported to have begun playing itself, causing some employees to quit. Attic activity, basement activity, and ghostly images of apparitions of people who seem to disappear have been reported. These and other strange occurrences have landed the mansion as one of the most haunted places to visit in America to visit. I have been many times and have on one occasion fell prey to an experience which I cannot explain. I was in the attic with my brother once before the attic was remodeled in the early 1990’s. An old baby carriage was in the attic and when we went upstairs to “scare ourselves”, it moved ever so slowly across the floor. Neither one of us pushed it, and no one else was upstairs with us. It made me think twice and down the steps I went! Yet I return year after year for the mystery theaters, libations and wonderful food. I even took my wedding photo shoot at a stop here and at the brewery complex. Another ghastly tale is that of another famous mansion in Alton, Illinois. Alton is known for its sordid past full of murders, spooky tales, Civil War deaths, and paranormal activity in its limestone bluffs. The McPike Mansion is one that visitors and natives alike claim have spirits still roaming the property. The McPike Mansion was built around the year 1869 and is a 16 room, 3 story Italianate Victorian style home. It has a vaulted wine cellar in the basement and sits on about 15 acres of land called Mount Lookout Park.
( Henry Guest McPike )
So, whether you’re a curiosity seeker, a believer in the paranormal and life ever after, or simply intrigued, (*) the history of our area has much to offer. Perhaps you believe the dead are reluctant to leave the Midwest because they too love the river cities and the beauty of the area. Perhaps if you hear a strange “knock knock” on a door late at night, or a voice you just can’t explain, it could be more than meets the ear. Be mindful when asking the question “who’s there?”… For these and other “haunted places” read the books Haunted Illinois, Haunted Saint Louis, and Beyond the Grave - written by Troy Taylor. Or visit these mansions in person for some Halloween excitement. Photo credits- Carrie Paul- Lemp Mansion, brewery, and mausoleum at Bellefountaine Cemetery
Henry Guest McPike was born around 1825 and was the close friend of Abraham Lincoln. He was a real estate developer and mayor of Alton from 1887-1891. He also grew grapes and loved horticulture and as a result, a wine grape is named in his honor. In 1925, the mansion was purchased by Paul Laichinger who converted the home into a boarding house, renting rooms and possibly living there himself until around the end of World War 2. The house sat vacant from the 1950’s to about 1994 and was subjected to vandalism, ransacking, and serious neglect. Sharon and George Luedke restored the home, but serious paranormal activity has since been reported. Some state that Native American ghosts haunt the property. Others claim the soul of a domestic servant girl haunts the upstairs, and apparitions of Paul Laichinger himself have been reported. The scent of lilac has invaded the third floor when no air fresheners had been sprayed and no flowers had been placed there. The Travel Channel shows, such as Ghost Adventurers, Ghost Lab, and Scariest Places on Earth, have all confirmed activity on this property. Even the owners have stories to tell!

October 2019 “Huebris” is for 2 players. You will need a red, yellow and blue writing utensil.
You are cordially invited to volume number eight! This left column of games will remain the same trusty games with a different setup each month, while the right column will introduce new games monthly. Want to support more games like these? Want next month’s issue before it goes to print?Join our patreon at: Patreon.com/DankByDesign Bring as many eggs to the exit of the dungeon as you can carrying them in your inventory. Each skeleton is worth 1VP when defeated but undefeated costs 1 heart (1VP) when encountered. If you have no hearts you may not cross over a skeleton without a sword. Items are one time use! All items take 1 inventory slot and you must have empty inventory slots to pick them up. Use of any item means it is discarded and items may not be discarded without first using them. Eggs may never be discarded. You may cross a space more than once. Dark spaces require the use of one torch to travel through each time, even if you already traveled through it before. You may not travel diagonally. Start at the S and end at the E. You must finish if your path hits E.
Setup: color in the 10 light grey circles with yellow. Then each of you should take the red or blue colored utensil, becoming the red and the blue players respectively. Blue begins the game. The object of play: you and your opponent begin on your sides of the board, taking turns coloring in one circle at a time. You earn one point for each flower petal you have colored in with your color by the end of the game. You earn two points for each secondary color besides purple that you create on each flower petal by the end of the game. Each time you create purple you lose one point writing -1 on your side. You begin: on your side of the board and may color a circle in any of the spaces here as your first move. After, every circle you color in must be concentric with any circle you’ve already colored in. You may only color one circle at a time. You will overlap your own circles with adjacent concentric circles but may not color the exact same circle twice. You may not overlap your opponent’s colored in circles entirely AND when you overlap your opponent making purple, you lose one point for each flower petal of purple you create. You must not overlap on top of flower petals that are both yellow and your opponent’s color blended. You may not cover yellow circles entirely with one circle of your color occupying the entire space at once.
Sword- Defeats 1 skeleton
You end: when there is no move left for either player to make. Then you add your scores by counting flower petals of your color as well as secondary colors of your own (subtracting for purple you made): Your own color.............................................................................................................................................................. One point. Your secondary color.................................................................................................................................................Two points.
Torch- Travel through 1 dark space Key- Unlock 1 chest or 1 door Egg- Score 2VP when brought to E Ice- May not turn on ice unless if stopped by a dark space or edge. Chest- Score 5VP when unlocked Warp- Transports you to any other warp, any time you step onto one. Door- Blocks travel in all directions.
Escaping this room requires you to figure out the password for the door. Solve the password based on how many letters long the code is, the selection of letters you have to choose from and what the room or painting looks like. You may use a letter more than once. Check back each month for the password to escaping from last month’s room! Volume #7’s Password: “DESERT”

Mary Hope As a writer, I am interested in places, memory, and migrations. Through poetry, essay, and fiction I explore these concerns. Each piece of writing is informed by some aspect of nature, place, politics, movement – human, animal, thought. I have been a recipient of a Fishtrap Fellowship, Playa Residency and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Oregon Arts Commission. Currently I live in O’Fallon, Illinois with my husband of 33 years and one geriatric cat.
On reading the news of my neighbor’s foreclosure Your daughter was building a bookshelf that last time we had tea, sunlight a shawl over your shoulders. Two curly haired grandchildren pushed past our legs and we each brushed our fingers along their backs, they arched like lazy cats and then crawled away. The pines behind the barn were covered in snow and blue jays. So many that their raucous calls drew us all onto the back porch, where we stood, one child in my arms, one in yours, and your daughter, with a mouthful of nails, cradling a soft plank of a warm and golden wood.

Cover Artist Mick O’Day I’ve been drawing ever since I was little, but really serious for about the past 10 years. I have a full time job as a factory assembler in St. Louis. Drawing is really just a hobby for me. I also enjoy photography and playing the keyboard. I have done many commission jobs. I use colored pencils as well, that started in 2013, as most of my work is done with various graphite pencils. Some of my friends asked me about putting my art work on t-shirts, hoodies, coffee mugs, etc. So now it is possible. It is called “The Art of Mick Wear”. You can see more of my artwork on my Facebook page, Art of Mick. If you want to contact me about putting any of my art on a shirt or if you have a picture you would like me to draw, please send me a Facebook message. Thank you.
