Belleville 200 — Oh what a time by Henry Collins

Belleville’s biggest weekend festival ever is coming this month. The September weekend usually identified with OctoberFest is this year the signature celebratory event for Belleville’s 200th Anniversary. Three days of fun and music (almost Woodstock) on September 19, 20 and 21. There will be three (count them: 3) entertainment stages on Main Street, two featuring performances by national and local bands and one stage just for children. Other activities include historic demonstrations, civil war reenactment, vintage baseball, rides, a petting zoo, a naturalization ceremony, the annual tapping of the keg, plus a whole lot more! And all of these events are FREE. Of course there will be food and beverages – perchance a bit of beer. And a go for the making and partaking of the Guinness World Record for the longest bratwurst : TWO HUNDRED FEET… And this is, after all, Str8Up Magazine. So we’re most attracted to the live music filling the streets. And it may take more space than allotted to showcase it all. But here we go: The festivities begin on Friday, September 19 at 10am with a naturalization ceremony for some 100 persons and a Veterans’ ceremony at the Veterans’ Memorial Fountain on the Square at noon. And I did say Str8Up would showcase the music. Well that begins at 3pm with Paul Bonn and the Bluesmen on the Courthouse Stage and John Farrar on the East Main Stage at 5pm.

At 5pm at the Courthouse Stage, STL Express will provide German Music to complement the annual Tapping of the Keg. Big band Bob Cuban will take over the Courthouse stage at 7pm with AmberFade on the East Main Stage. Steve Ewing of The Urge will command the East Main Stage at 9pm while, at the same time, The Beach Boys play the Courthouse Stage. And I did say The Beach Boys? You know, The Beach Boys. That famous California group that captivated us with “California Girls”, “Barbara Ann”, “God Only Knows”, “Surfer Girl”, “The Warmth of the Sun”, “Wouldn’t it be Nice”, “Good Vibrations”. Well, that’s a few of their songs. That should take us into Saturday when the Courthouse Stage opens at 11am with the Waterloo German Band. The East Main Stage opens at noon with the Mark Biehl Jazz Group. Borderline takes the Courthouse Stage at 1pm, The Saloonatics at the East Main Stage at 2pm. EarthSol jams the Courthouse Stage at 3pm with Brandon Michael Holland at the East Main Stage at 4pm. The boys of Old Salt Union light up the Courthouse Stage at 5pm. Hashtag Pop takes the East Main Stage at 6pm and Metal Studz at 8pm. Country artists Confederate Railroad will fill the Courthouse stage at 7pm. Following the Railroad, the Roots and Boots Tour brings to the stage Sammy Kershaw, Aaron Tippin and Darryl Worley at 9pm. Wow, what a day of remarkable live music. We’re not done.

The Beach Boys will appear at the Belleville 200 celebration on September 19, for the Oktoberfest weekend celebration.

make with you the tap test.” And he did, by holding the heads up to a microphone one at a time and tapping them with his finger. One made a dull rattle while the other reverberated like a gong. “You see, the rims are not one solid piece; they are welded, and sometimes the welds are not good enough. If you get one like this,” he said, holding a defective one, “you have what we call in Germany a Monday drum. Mondays are no good for anything.”

by Dan Cross

Last month’s amazing drum clinic and concert at the Belleville Philharmonic Society, featuring famed drummers Gerry Brown and Ndugu Chancler, would not have happened if Garrett Peek hadn’t finally decided to pick up one of the calls he was getting from a strange international phone number. When Peek, co-owner of Melodic Rhythms music school in Belleville, finally answered the calls, a heavily accented voice said, “Hello, I am Uli Frost from Paderborn and I want to come to Belleville to have a drum clinic.” Frost, from Belleville’s sister city in Germany, heard that it was our town’s 200th anniversary, so he wanted to do something special for us. As Peek explained, “Paderborn has other sister cities in Europe and they do a lot for each other, so he wanted to do something here. When I realized he was serious, I said, ‘Okay, let’s do it.’” The original plan was to feature Chester Thompson, legendary drummer who has performed with Phil Collins and Genesis, Weather Report, Frank Zappa, and Freddie Hubbard, but a couple weeks before the event, Thompson had to cancel due to other obligations. Frost, one of world’s top drum technicians and recording engineers, made a couple more phone calls to friends and lined up not one, but two other drummers of Thompson’s stature: Gerry Brown, whose credits include work with Stevie Wonder, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Lionel Ritchie, and Ndugu Chancler, who has played with Miles Davis, Carlos Santana, Michael Jackson and many, many others. The two replacements brought more than enough experience, interesting anecdotes, and dazzling technique to keep the standing room only crowd at the Philharmonic Center entertained for hours. The evening started early, with a clinic led by Uli Frost, who demonstrated the function and sound of every part of a modern drum. The audience included many drummers ranging in age from six to seventy, and even those who had been playing for decades learned new things from Frost.

After an interesting hour of technical facts and tips, Frost yielded to Brown and Chancler for their portion of the clinic: advice, especially to the young people in the audience, about how to develop their musical skills. “You have to broaden your horizons,” Brown told the crowd. “You have to keep yourself informed about what is happening, not just musically, but also politically, and culturally. Music is the universal language, so you have to be aware of everything.” Brown clearly enjoys teaching. “As my father said, ‘It’s your divine contract; you’ve been blessed, and now it is time to share those blessings with others.” After the clinic, he talked about how much he enjoyed it. “It was especially nice to see all the parents here with their children. Supportive parents! What a concept!” Chancler also enjoys his role as a teacher (as he should— he is a professor of music at USC). He stressed the importance of learning the fundamentals and being open to all musical styles. “I hear students tell me all the time that they don’t like a certain type of music. How can you say you don’t like some kind of music that you don’t even know how to play?” He demonstrated how his grasp of the fundamentals helps him find work with artists as diverse as Michael Jackson and Kenny Rogers. “Practice is so important, but too many musicians think practice just means jamming. But jamming won’t help you get gigs. You have to work on becoming not just a good drummer but a good musician. And you have to be able to sing everything you play.” A young man from the audience asked for clarification on this point. “You mean like beat boxing?” What happened next was one of the highlights of the night. “Come up here,” Chancler demanded. “Play something for me.” The brave young man, who identified himself as Jerry Unique, faced his fear and obliged. He played a short riff on the drums, the eyes of everyone in the crowd fixed upon him.

He demonstrated how even the direction of the wood grain “Okay, now sing what you just played,” Chancler said. (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) on a drum’s core significantly Unique complied. “Ch-ch-Pop!-ch-ch-da-da-dum.” changes the sound. And how all drum heads are not created equal. He showed this by holding up two identical-looking heads. Then, in his charming, German accent (reminiscent of Peter Sellers as Dr. Strangelove), he said to the audience, “And now, I would like to 6

September 2014 “Okay, now sing it and play it at the same time.” Unique gave it his best shot, but it wasn’t good enough for Chancler. “You sang it right, but you didn’t play the same thing you were singing!” Unique gave it another try and nailed it. The crowd gave him a big hand for his bravery and his ability. “Man, it was so scary,” he said later. “It was like being called out by a master. But I think I did okay.” Unique was at the clinic with two other young drummers, all members of the drum line at Ferguson High School in Missouri. They all clearly enjoyed the evening, which was so nice to see, considering the recent chaos in their community. Then came the concert, with Brown and Chancler taking turns playing a set with the members of the Chester Brown Trio who did make it to the event: pianist Joe Davidian and Bassist Michael Rinne. All four musicians displayed unbelievable skill, but the two drummers really stole the show. First came Chancler, playing at times with amazing finesse and subtlety, even playing with his bare fingertips on the snare drum at one point, and then erupting with surprising power and intensity at other times. Brown, while still showing impressive range and restraint, was generally the more raucous and theatrical, sometimes spinning his sticks in the Everyone involved spoke of their desire to do it again, middle of impossibly complex drum fills and dropping the jaws of perhaps biannually, like the Drum and Percussion Festival every drummer in the audience. in Paderborn, Germany, the largest of its kind in Europe. Unique Simplicity in Midtowne by Michelle McIntosh

One of the newest books in the works will be about her cute little bunny, Ms. Bun Bun, whom she rescued from a neighbor’s cat and has brought back to health. Another one of her books is called ‘Rosie the Rottweiler’, which is based on – yes – her dog, Rosie. She got Rosie from a shelter and the story is about giving these big dogs from a shelter a chance. Sindy has a soft heart when it comes to animals and is also a member of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

In mid April, a new little shop opened at 1110 West Main. As you walk in, you feel like you have stepped back into your childhood, with the light, pastel colors, the cabinets with shirts. Sometimes, in the backroom, you might even catch a glimpse of Rosie, her Rottweiler, or Ms. Bun Bun, her newest rescued bunny. Simply Sindy Smith is owned by Sindy Smith Kubitschek. Sindy is a children’s book author and illustrator. She began her publishing career about 15 years ago. Sindy is a Metro East native, and was born in Belleville, IL. She is a graduate of Southwestern Illinois College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Marketing Management, and went to Concordia University Wisconsin, where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her writings are often a reflection of events in her past. Four of her books’ settings are based on her former house, the historic Wirsing Manor. It was a 14 room home dating back to 1845, one that can be found on the National Register of Historic Places. Her new shop is located in another historic building in the old West Belleville area. West Belleville was a separate community adjacent to Belleville established in 1852. In 1882, West Belleville merged with Belleville. “I really think this whole area is on the edge of blossoming,” said Kubitschek. In her Simply Sindy shop, you will find a full selection of her many children’s books. To complement her books, there are greeting cards adorned with her own original drawings, t-shirts that match her books, caps, handmade scarves, some lotions, and more. There is also her one young adult/adult ghost story book based on her real life experiences. All of Sindy’s books are based on real life experiences and real life animals that have in some way or another graced her life. Sindy has traveled a lot and has her books in about 185 libraries. She does a lot of public speaking about her books in schools too. “I was doing a lot of trade and vendor shows,” said Kubitschek. “And after seeing this little (Miscellanea House) coffee shop across the street, I thought now would be a great time to open up my own shop.” “The kids really love ‘Dadu the Dolphin’, my book about environmental issues,” Kubitschek said. ‘Dadu the Dolphin’ is based on a trip Sindy took to Florida with her daughter. There, they walked along a beach that was very littered. She and her daughter started picking up the trash to make it better. Sindy has a total of nine books right now and is currently working on two more. Her first book, ‘Little Lucy Lou’, is based on her daughter Lindsay. 24
