All you have to do is look at a photograph of Positano, Italy and you'll immediately understand why visitors find it so charming. Nestled in an enclave in the hills that lead down to the breathtaking Amalfi Coast, this small town of about 3,000 residents seems to cling to the rock face, perched precariously over the water. The homes are so close to one another that it seems the friendly inhabitants of Positano can reach out and touch their neighbor from just about any room in their house. Yet, this closeness, combined with the blue of the water below and the colors of the flowers that grace tiny gardens and window boxes, is what makes Positano one of the leading attractions in the Campania region. A popular stop on just about any tour that includes the Amalfi Coast, Positano may not be full of tourist sites and historical gems like some of Italy's larger cities, but it's truly a breath of fresh air and a joy to explore. And exploring this part of the Amalfi Coast area is easy! Positano is "pedestrianized". That means there are no cars allowed in town, basically because there isn't any room for them! Cars and tour buses are left in parking areas outside the town and porters are available to tote luggage to guest accommodations, which includes lots of boutique hotels. Once you've reached the center of town, you'll find dozens of stairways and small alleyways, lots of hidden corners, and plenty of sights that are truly enchanting. If you're into ecclesiastical architecture or just enjoy visiting old churches, check out the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, located directly in the center of town. Its beautiful green and yellow tiled dome helps you identify it. Inside, there are three naves, filled with gold ornamentation and an impressive collection of fine works of art, including a much photographed Byzantine 13th century wooden panel painting of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus. It's carried to the main beach every August 15 to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. Guests will also want to visit the Palazzo Murat, named for Joachim Murat, brother-in-law of Napoleon. This was his opulent Amalfi Coast summer home, done in Neapolitan Baroque style, much different than the very simple structures found throughout the rest of pretty Positano. It now functions as a hotel. If shopping is your bag, there's plenty of it here and, recently, the town has begun making a name for itself as one of the fashion capitals of Italy. Look for a large number of boutiques boasting colorful garments that are light and airy, indicative of the laid back lifestyle here. This so-called
"Positano Fashion" has become known throughout the world and, in fashion circles, has put this little town on the map. Don't miss the fabulous homemade sandals, too! However, if you'd rather just enjoy the views of your Italy vacation package, head to the Via Positanesi d'America, a lovely seaside promenade that will take you past the town's three old defense towers and to the beach known as Spaggia di Fornillo. Grab a bite to eat at a nearby restaurant or just take some time to rest and admire the Amalfi Coast scenery.
