Many of those who buy book readers are not only interested in using them to read books they have purchased; they also would like to use them to read other types of books and files. This is a look at reading PDF files on the Amazon Kindle 2. Amazon's Kindle 2, unlike their DX, does not support PDF files. Therefore, they must be converted before they can be viewed on a Kindle. One way of doing this is by using Mobipocket reader software. Although there are other (perhaps better) ways, being free, quick and relatively easy to use, Mobipocket reader software is a good place to start for those looking for a fast way to convert PDF files to a format that can be viewed on the Kindle. To make a PDF readable on a Kindle, go to the Mobipocket website, install the software and covert the PDF file to the Mobipocket PRC format (there are online videos that show how to do this if you need help). Then, transfer the file into the Kindle 2 documents folder via the USB cable. My testing The purely text PDF files tested converted well. Very little formatting seemed to be lost and most of the text was in nice paragraphs similar to a purchased book. The text-to-speech, ability to adjust text size and dictionary all worked just as they would with a purchased book. Overall, it gave pretty much the same experience as reading a regular Kindle books. Things did not turn out so well with PDF files that contained images, tables and other content that was not purely text. Formatting was lost and there were problems with images that appeared too small or just disappeared completely. Overall, for those looking for a reader of PDF files that are purely text, the Kindle 2 worked great. However, I would not recommend using it if the file contained many tables or images. Even with better conversion software, the small screen and lack of color does not bode well for images and the like.
