In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, the world’s first ever combination candy bar was born. Goo Goo Clusters, roundish mounds of luscious caramel, smooth creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, have been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since! Goo Goos were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, ladies would swaddle the Goo Goo Clusters in tinfoil. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the Goo Goo Cluster. Today, the process of making Goo Goos is so streamlined that Standard Candy in Nashville can produce 20,000 Goo Goo Clusters in one hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme (same as the Original but made with pecans instead of peanuts), and Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. Last year saw another exciting addition to the brand’s offerings when Goo Goo Cluster opened its flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop, in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville. The Goo Goo Shop is no ordinary retail store, as a visitor can take a walk through history while viewing a prominent timeline complete with artifacts from the Goo Goo archives. In addition, the really sweet part of the new space that delights both young and old is the confectionery kitchen, where new Premium Goo Goos are made by hand daily in full view of visitors. Premium Goo Goos are sold exclusively at the Goo Goo Shop and like the Original, are made with the finest ingredients. Unlike the Original, the Premium comes in an assortment of different flavors with various inclusions that rotate periodically -- Peanut Butter Pretzel, Cookie Dough, Hazelnut Ganache, Cherry and Toasted Pistachio, just to name a few. The possibilities are endless! Visit often to try them all. For more information on Goo Goo Cluster and the Goo Goo Shop, visit www.googoo.com. 10/10/14 3:57 PM

ountry music fans from around the world visit year after year to experience the unique country music history that comes alive as you journey through the Willie Nelson and Friends Museum. This is a very personal museum that evolved over the years from friendships established by museum founders, Frank and Jeanie Oakley. The Oakley’s were longtime friends with not only Willie Nelson but many of his legendary country music friends as well. There are lots of personal items to see donated by legends like Webb Pierce and Faron Young who were regulars at the museum prior to their passing. The museum has always been known as a great hangout for many of the stars you’ll see represented in the many exhibits. The museum is true country music history and showcases an “All Star” line-up of some of traditional country music’s greatest stars! Among the many highlights on display include the Martin guitar and paystub from Willie

re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City
B
ob Dylan. Neil Young. Leonard Cohen. The Byrds. Paul McCartney. Ringo Starr. Joan Baez. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. J.J. Cale. Linda Ronstadt. Leon Russell. Gordon Lightfoot. Steve Miller. Ian & Sylvia. The Monkees. Simon & Garfunkel. All were among the many rock and folk artists who came to Nashville in the late 1960s and early ’70s to work with the city’s versatile, hotshot session musicians, the “Nashville Cats.” The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum’s upcoming major exhibition, Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City, will explore this magical time. The exhibit opens Friday, March 27, 2015 and runs through December 31, 2016. Dylan’s decision to record in Nashville provided a major catalyst in bringing many others to what must have seemed a very unlikely destination in the politically polarized sixties. In spite of its reputation among hipsters as a conservative town, removed from the main trends in popular music, Nashville, in fact, was home to musicians who had a huge influence on other music scenes of the era, including those of New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Toronto, and London. Bob Dylan While recording his album Highway 61 Revisited in 1965, Dylan was in New York working with producer Bob Johnston, a former Nashville resident who hired multi-instrumentalist Charlie McCoy to lead sessions in Nashville. McCoy attended one of Dylan’s New York sessions and was invited to play guitar on “Desolation Row.” Taken with McCoy’s musicianship, Dylan was encouraged by Johnston to record in Nashville where there were other musicians as skilled as McCoy. Dylan took Johnston’s advice and arrived in Nashville in 1966 to make Blonde on Blonde, one of the great achievements of Dylan’s long career and a benchmark of American popular music. Dylan returned to Nashville to record John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, and portions of Self Portrait. Johnny Cash Having met several years before, and having cemented their friendship at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival, Dylan and Johnny Cash were reunited in Nashville, in February 1969. 30 getaway nashville and middle tennessee
Dylan already had recorded most of Nashville Skyline when he and Cash went into the studio. They cut more than a dozen duets in two days. “Girl from the North Country” appeared on Nashville Skyline, and Cash wrote Grammy-winning liner notes for the album. Later that same year, Cash began hosting a weekly show for ABC. The Johnny Cash Show was shot at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium and became an outlet through which country artists and folk, pop and rock musicians could reach new audiences. Dylan and Joni Mitchell were guests on the first show, and Ronstadt, James Taylor, Young, Lightfoot and Eric Clapton’s Derek & the Dominos appeared on subsequent shows. Nashville Cats Many artists who followed Dylan’s lead and made the pilgrimage to Nashville to record or appear on Cash’s show were rewarded with the opportunity to work with world-class musicians. In several cases, the experiment yielded some of the artists’ most successful or influential albums, thanks to the accomplished players drawn from a core group of Nashville studio musicians including David Briggs, Kenny Buttrey, Fred Carter Jr., Charlie Daniels, Pete Drake, Mac Gayden, Lloyd Green, Ben Keith, Grady Martin, Charlie McCoy, Wayne Moss, Weldon Myrick, Norbert Putnam, Jerry Reed, Pig Robbins, and Buddy Spicher, among others. In the political climate of the era, Nashville’s mainstream country recordings were perceived as the music of the conservative South, overtly slick and commercial. In stark contrast were the folk-oriented, politically charged songs coming from Baez, Buffy Sainte-Marie and other left-leaning artists who looked past their differences to work with Nashville’s accomplished musicians. This is not primarily a story of cultural or political divisions, but rather of people coming together from very different backgrounds and moving past perceived divisions to find common ground through music. More information about this exhibit and the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is available at countrymusichalloffame.org or by calling (615) 416-2001.

Jack’s Bar-B-Que
F
or “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee”, you’ve got to visit Jack’s Bar-B-Que where they proudly serve barbeque from “Pit to Plate”. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their awardwinning sauces, there is something to please every palate. Their cooking method and awardwinning sauces make Jack’s the best. After applying their dry rub (spices and herbs) meat is smoked for 18 hours at 250 degrees. From “Pit to Plate”, it is sliced and chopped before serving and you will notice a pink smoke ring. That’s the real signature of hickory smoked barbeque. Jack recommends pouring sauces right before eating. Award-winning sauces include Kansas City Style (mild, sweet and smoky), Tennessee Original (tangy vinegar base), Texas Sweet Hot (tomato base), XXX-911 (cross between TN & TX with a kick), Carolina Style (mustard base), and Music City White Sauce (mayo, horseradish base). Purchase any four of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Famous Sauces and get a FREE Hand Rub! When you dine at Jack’s, you will see for yourself why Jack’s Bar-B-Que has been named “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee” by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today. 3 Locations to serve you (T.C.B) Trinity, Charlotte and Broadway. All 3 historic locations, 334 West Trinity Lane at Historic Talbot Corner, 1601 Charlotte Avenue on the Historic Prison Grounds at the foot of Capital Hill and 416 Broadway at the heart of the Honky Tonks on Lower Broadway. “Taking Care of Business since 1976”. Nashville: Athens of the South
T
he Parthenon stands proudly as the centerpiece of Centennial Park, Nashville’s premier urban park. The re-creation of the 42-foot statue Athena is the focus of the Parthenon just as it was in ancient Greece. The building and the Athena statue are both full-scale replicas of the Athenian originals. Originally built for Tennessee’s 1897 Centennial Exposition, this replica of the original Parthenon in Athens serves as a monument to what is considered the pinnacle of classical architecture. The plaster replicas of the Parthenon Marbles found in the Naos are direct casts of the original sculptures which adorned the pediments of the Athenian Parthenon, dating back to 438 B.C. The originals of these powerful fragments are housed in the British Museum in London. The Parthenon also serves as the city of Nashville’s art museum. The focus of the Parthenon’s permanent collection is a group of 63 paintings by 19th and 20th century American artists donated by James M. Cowan. Additional gallery spaces provide a venue for a variety of temporary shows and exhibits. Athena In the 1920s the Parthenon was rebuilt as a full-scale replica of the ancient Parthenon with one large exception. The colossal statue of Athena from ancient times was not in this replica. In 1982, the city commissioned Alan LeQuire to build a full-scale replica of Athena Parthenos. Soon after, a group of concerned citizens formed the Athena Fund. Starting with funds accumulated over the years from the nickels and dimes of school children and tourists, the Athena Fund grew rapidly through private and commercial donations. The Artist • In 1982 seven sculptors submitted proposals to recreate the Athena statue in Nashville. Alan LeQuire won the commission because of his skill and commitment to accuracy. LeQuire attended Vanderbilt University and received his MFA from University of North Carolina, Greensboro in 1981. • LeQuire, a Nashville native, began his journey by researching the Athena statue of antiquity. What we know about the 52 getaway nashville and middle tennessee
Athena statue from the ancient Parthenon is somewhat limited. The gold and ivory statue was lost by the 400 A.D., so historical documentation is brief, but does exist. LeQuire also depended on modern classical scholars for the most recent archaeological information. The Original Sculptor Pheidias, the greatest sculptor of classical antiquity, constructed the Athena Parthenos on a wooden framework with carved ivory for skin and a gold wardrobe. The statue was unveiled and dedicated in 438 or 437 B.C. We can depend on this date based on the building accounts of the temple. Other sources are equally important. For example, there are ancient authors, such as Pausanias, who referred to the Athena statue in writings. Athena appears on Athenian coins of the second and first centuries B.C. Later, Romans copied the statue in small-scale. Even today on the Acropolis you can see the outline of Athena’s base on the floor of the Parthenon. All of this evidence is culminated in LeQuire’s Athena. The Re-creation • After exhaustive research, Alan LeQuire created two smallscale versions of the statue out of clay. First, he created a 1:10 model from clay. Later, he sculpted a 1:5 scale model. From this later model LeQuire spent about three years enlarging and casting the full-size Athena Parthenos. Athena was cast out of gypsum cement in many molds and assembled inside the Parthenon. Each section was attached to a steel armature for support. The Athena statue was constructed from 1982 to 1990. It stood in Nashville’s Parthenon as a plain, white statue for 12 years. In 2002 the Parthenon gilded Athena with Alan LeQuire and master gilder Lou Reed in charge of the project. The gilding project took less than 4 months and makes Athena appear that much closer to the ancient Athena Parthenos. In addition to gilding, the project included painted details on her face, wardrobe and shield. The Parthenon is located at Nashville’s Centennial Park, 2500 West End Avenue, 615862-8400.
