Ryman Auditorium:

E

the “Soul of Nashville”

stablished in 1892 as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, Ryman Auditorium is a National Historic Landmark and must see for any Nashville visitor. Most famous as the home of the Grand Ole Opry from 1943 — 1974, there is far more to the story of Music City’s most recognizable icon. Take a Self-Guided or Guided Backstage tour and discover what makes the Ryman, the “Soul of Nashville.” At the start of your tour, you will be immersed in the Ryman’s magical history during “Soul of Nashville,” a one-of-a-kind theater experience which puts the spotlight on more than a century of legendary performances and showcases a new collaboration with Darius Rucker, The Fisk Jubilee Singers, Sheryl Crow and Vince Gill. Five new exhibits are now open! “Workin’ on a Building,”“Showplace of the South,” Mother Church of Country Music,”“Ryman Stage to Screen,” and “Ryman Renaissance”. Peruse genuine artifacts and enjoy videos with hosts Charles Esten, Marty Stuart, Nicole Kidman, Ricky Skaggs, Robin Roberts and Trisha Yearwood as they take you through each chapter of the fascinating Ryman story. Explore its rich entertainment history and how the Ryman became known as the “Carnegie Hall of South” during the years when Caruso and Sousa performed, Theodore Roosevelt spoke, and Houdini escaped in the 5th Avenue vestibule timeline. Then, take your place center stage, grab a guitar and step up to the microphone while you have your photo taken on the legendary planks.

Goo Goo Cluster In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee, the first combination candy bar was invented. A roundish mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, the Goo Goo Cluster has been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since. Goo Goo Clusters were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, a team of ladies was responsible for swaddling the Goo Goo Clusters in tin foil before they were sold. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the candy. Today, the process is so streamlined that Standard Candy Company in Nashville can produce 20,000 clusters in one hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme, which replaces peanuts with pecans, and the Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. Last year saw another exciting addition to the brand’s offerings when Goo Goo Cluster opened its flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop, in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville. The Goo Goo Shop is no ordinary retail store. Visitors have the opportunity to take a walk through history as they peruse a 100+ year timeline complete with artifacts from the Goo Goo archives. But the sweetest part of the new space (pun intended) may be the glassedencased confectionery kitchen, where Premium Goo Goos are made by hand daily in full view of visitors. Premium Goo Goos, the newest addition to the company’s product offerings, are sold exclusively at the Goo Goo Shop. This 4 ounce confection is more than twice the size of an Original Goo Goo Cluster, and comes in various flavors. The Premium menu rotates periodically and new flavors are introduced on a regular basis. In recent months, some of the most popular have been a peanut butter and pretzel version and a toasted pistachio, cherry and dark chocolate ganache version. Visit often to try them all! For more information on Goo Goo Cluster and the Goo Goo Shop, visit www.googoo.com. 14

New Shows and Décor Added to Gaylord Opryland’s

A Country Christmas

ICE!

D

uring A Country Christmas at Nashville’s Gaylord Opryland Resort, visitors are invited into a holiday wonderland festooned with 2.3 million lights, towering Christmas trees, enormous wreaths and glistening ornaments adorning indoor gardens beneath multi-acre atriums. “Whether new holiday shows or décor, we’re always finding ways to top ourselves, and this year is no exception,” said Gaylord Opryland General Manager Pete Weien. Audiences will find their hearts growing a few sizes along with the Grinch’s when they experience the magic of Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical. Hailed by The New York Times as “100 times better than any bedside story,” this classic holiday musical will enchant adults and children alike with hit songs like “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas” from the original animated television special. Celebrating 60 years in 2015, Opry members Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers are bringing their hits and holiday favorites to a brand new dinner show at the resort. After a feast prepared by the resort’s award-winning chefs, audiences will be dazzled by the incredible vocal harmonies of this Grammy-winning trio. At ICE! featuring The Nutcracker, guests will marvel at 2 million pounds of colorful ice sculptures and two-story-tall ice slides carved by 40 artisans from Harbin, China. For more chilly fun, guests can brave the six-lane tubing hill covered in 1.5 million pounds of real snow or visit the 6,000 square foot outdoor ice rink. Families can test their puzzle-solving prowess during 16 16 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

White Lightning, Southern Hospitality, and George Jones

G

eorge Jones Museum offers something for everyone

Less than six months after it first opened the doors, the George Jones Museum has quickly established itself as the go-to place for visitors and locals alike. With more than 40,000 square feet of space spread over three floors, the entertainment complex provides visitors with respite from summer heat, a great place to grab an early breakfast or a late dinner, and award-winning spirits from the White Lightning Moonshine bar. Your visit starts on the first floor, where vista windows at both ends of the facility provide visitors with two views of Nashville. On the 2nd Avenue side, visitors can take in the sounds of live music while sipping on signature cocktails in the bar, which overlooks the historic street through large, open-air windows. If you enjoy that cocktail, make sure to pick up a bottle or three of White Lightning Moonshine, the 2015 SIP Award-winning libations sold exclusively at the George Jones Museum. Passing through the gift shop, you arrive in Choices Restaurant, one of Nashville’s newest and most popular eateries. Featuring culinary creations fit for any appetite, you won’t want to miss the fried green tomatoes or the bread pudding. Southern charm meets Southern cuisine at Choices, and diners can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner while taking in the panoramic views of the Cumberland River as it winds its way through town. If music history is your delight, you’ll want to book an extra hour or two to take in the George Jones Museum, which occupies the entirety of the second floor of the complex. Featuring exhibits from each stage in George’s life, from his rural childhood, through his early days on the radio, all the way through to the memorial concert, the museum chronicles his life and gives fans 18

an intimate look behind the scenes for one of country’s most defining artists. Assembled from the private collections of Nancy Jones, each artifact provides insights into the man’s life, his musical career, and his legacy. You may not need that rocking chair, but take a load off in the theatre anyway, and enjoy an in-depth documentary exploring Jones’s life. After you’re finished with the film, head over to the recording studio and lay down a track or two with the

Possum himself. And, before you go, be sure to take a selfie in the giant rocking chair, which used to adorn the gates of the Jones estate each Christmas. After the museum, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite and a thirst. So head on up to the George, one of Nashville’s hottest night spots. The rooftop bar offers sweeping views of downtown Nashville, the Cumberland River, and all points beyond. Sip on a cocktail and maybe have a few appetizers while you listen to live music from some of the best up-andcoming musicians in Nashville. Or, just sit and peoplewatch, because you never know who’s going to turn up at the George. With something for everyone, the George Jones Museum is sure to be a place you’ll tell your friends about when you get home. For more information, visit www.georgejonesmuseum.com. The George Jones Museum is located on 2nd Avenue, next door to the Wildhorse Saloon.

N

ancy Jones invites you for a walk through George Jones’s life. Experience a winding wall of memorabilia and create some very special memories of your own, including singing with the legendary George Jones. Your experience only gets larger as you visit the Museum gift shop, stop by the tasting bar for a sip or two of White Lightning, enjoy a flavorful dish at Possum Holler Café and then take a ride to the rooftop and see the best view in Downtown Nashville. We will see you there!

RHONDA VINCENT’S NEW HOLIDAY ALBUM

Featuring Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys & More

R

honda Vincent has been celebrating the season all year; writing new Christmas material, then combining the new originals with the classics. The result is something unique and it’s sure to set the perfect tone for this Holiday Season! This six-time Grammy® nominated artist revealed Christmas Time on October 30 via Upper Management Music. Among the tunes, you will find the “Twelve Days of Christmas,” like you’ve never heard before! Rhonda calls upon some of her most famous Country music friends to join her in the celebration; including Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, The Oak Ridge Boys and more (see track listing below).

“It was a dream of mine to create this celebrity version of the ‘Twelve Days of Christmas,’” said Vincent. She explains, “As I started sharing my vision with family and friends, my band mate Mickey Harris, began sharing his ideas, relating the line to specific artists. When I told him I had invited Dolly, he suggested she sing the line ‘Eight Maids A Milking.’ It was then I set to work to match artists with specific lines, and taking on the task of contacting each artist. Dolly was the first to respond, and the first to record. From there, it became a chaotic coordination of schedules, and a victory celebration with the completion of each artist’s contribution. I appreciate every artist that joined me in making this incredible dream come true!” 22 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

The upbeat favorite features vocal contributions from The Oak Ridge Boys, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels, Bill Anderson, Dolly Parton, Ronnie Milsap, Gene Watson, Lorrie Morgan, Pam Tillis, Jeannie Seely, Larry Gatlin, and EmiSunshine. Listen closely as each performer sings a line from the famous tune. Another highlight of the album is the “Christmas Medley,” which is the closing track of the album. For the first time ever, Vincent sings with only a piano, on a special arrangement of seven classics; including “We Three Kings,”“It Came Upon The Midnight Clear,”“The First Noel”, with ACM award-winner Michael Rojas. In addition to the large lineup of celebrity guests, Christmas Time also features a who’s who of musicians. Along with members of The Rage, joining Vincent on the album is ACM “Fiddle Player of the Year” Stuart Duncan, ACM “Steel Guitar Player of the Year” Mike Johnson, ACM “Piano/Keyboards Player of the Year” Michael Rojas, mandolinist extraordinaire Sierra Hull, and many more, who all come together to bring the Christmas sound to a whole new level. Also assisting Vincent on vocals is the International Bluegrass Music Association’s reigning “Emerging Artist of the Year” recipients, Flatt Lonesome. 1. This is a very personal museum that evolved over the years from friendships established by museum founders, Frank and Jeanie Oakley. The Oakley’s were longtime friends with not only Willie Nelson but many of his legendary country music friends as well. There are lots of personal items to see donated by legends like Webb Pierce and Faron Young who were regulars at the museum prior to their passing. The museum has always been known as a great hangout for many of the stars you’ll see represented in the many exhibits. The museum is true country music history and showcases an “All Star” line-up of some of traditional country music’s greatest stars! Among the many highlights on display include the Martin guitar and paystub from Willie

Nelson’s Grand Ole Opry debut in 1963. You’ll also see many personal items of the great Patsy Cline. Also featured are several “Nudie of Hollywood” suits worn by the legends Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Webb Pierce and Porter Wagoner. re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

he Journey Home Project, co-founded by Charlie Daniels, has committed $50,000 to help equip the new Veterans and Military Family Center at Middle Tennessee State University set to open Nov. 5. The contribution comes from funds raised at the 40th Anniversary Volunteer Jam, which took place on Aug. 12 at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Daniels and his long-time manager, David Corlew, co-founded The Journey Home Project as a non-profit organization to assist other not-for-profits to secure funds to benefit veterans. “Charlie and all of the board of The Journey Home Project are excited about our new partnership with MTSU and the veterans at this incredible university,” Corlew said. “This center will be the resource that will enable young men and women returning home from their service to transition, along with their families, into their lives as civilians,” he added. Daniels said, “We are anxious to see this center in action, a place where the many needs of our veterans can be dealt with by capable people who care.” “Charlie Daniels is a great friend of our university and an inspiration to us all for his commitment to our veterans,” said MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee. “This support by The Journey Home Project will help us improve the lives of our student-veterans and their precious families.” “The 2,600-square-foot center, located on the first floor of Keathley University Center, will be the largest and most comprehensive post-secondary center for veterans in Tennessee,” said retired U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Keith Huber, MTSU’s senior adviser for veterans and leadership initiatives. “It will address a number of student needs, including financial aid, navigating veterans benefits and academic advising,” he added. The center will have distinctive space for discussions, study sessions and will be staffed by fellow student veterans, who will serve as peer advisers and sponsors, according to Huber. There will also be a conference room for video teleconferencing and employer job interviews. The university named Dr. Hilary Miller, a military spouse and family member, as center director earlier this summer. She will lead an experienced staff alongside U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs employees Heather Conrad with VetSuccess on Campus and Veteran Affairs Coordinator Ray Howell. 28 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

Huber also revealed that a VA mental health counselor will also be in-house Charlie Daniels U.S. Army Lt Gen. Keith Huber (ret) to help veteran students and their families cope with post-war traumas, such as post-traumatic stress disorders. “The new center will encourage and facilitate the success of our veterans as they transition out of uniform into academics, and then into future employment opportunities, as they strive to become leaders in the community much like they were in uniform. It will also help to answer all of their questions and give them a place to go where they’re talking to people with a commonality of background, purpose and focus,” Huber said. Daniels has had close ties to MTSU for decades. In 1975, the second Volunteer Jam was held at MTSU’s Murphy Center and in 2009, the university presented him with the Joe M. Rodgers Spirit of America Award, an honor presented to a businessperson who has demonstrated the best of the spirit of America through significant contributions in government, education, and/or civic and charitable organizations. McPhee surprised Daniels in 2013 with a presentation on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry that formally announced the Charlie Daniels Scholarship at the Murfreesboro university, which was created in the singer’s honor through a $25,000 endowment from the International Entertainment Buyers Association. kicks off its 69th season this September, and with more than 100 classical, pops and jazz concerts, as well as dozens of special events featuring top-flight artists, catching a performance by “Music City’s Biggest Band” is a great addition to any Nashville visit. Thanks to numerous GRAMMY® Awards and nominations and a track record as one of America’s most prolific recording orchestras, the Nashville Symphony has earned international acclaim, and the stunning Schermerhorn Symphony Center – home to the Symphony since 2006 – is one of downtown Nashville’s crown jewels. Inspired by some of the world’s finest concert halls, the 1,844-seat venue caters to the sound of natural instruments, providing vivid acoustical clarity, warmth and reverberation. Put a top-tier orchestra in a world-class concert hall, with a full schedule of amazing artists and repertoire, and you’ve got an entire year’s worth of unforgettable live music experiences. At the heart of the orchestra’s programming, the Aegis Sciences Classical Series highlights some of the greatest works of music ever written, including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and Mozart’s Requiem. The Nashville Symphony’s commitment to contemporary American music means that you’ll also hear exciting new music by some of today’s leading composers. Extras like preconcert lectures and affordable “Date Night” ticket packages, including one with a $100 gift card for dinner at the nearby Omni hotel’s Kitchen Notes restaurant, make classical concerts at the Schermerhorn something any music lover will relish. Looking for a fun way to spend a Friday morning? Join the Nashville Symphony for one-hour “Coffee & Classics” concerts that include free coffee and pastries and an informative, informal talk from the stage by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero. Families can get in on the fun too with Saturday-morning Pied Piper Children’s concerts. Presented with local partners 42 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

like the Nashville Zoo and Adventure Science Center, these visually and musically stimulating performances are perfect for kids of all ages, with familyfriendly pre-concert activities like arts and crafts and the Symphony’s popular Instrument Petting Zoo. Great classical music is just the start of everything that the Nashville Symphony has to offer. Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Kristin Chenowith, Alabama, Don McLean, Burt Bacharach and The Irish Tenors are just a few of the special guest artists who will perform with the orchestra this season. Tribute shows to both the Eagles and U2 will feature a full rock band joining the orchestra for each group’s greatest hits. Or you can watch classic movies like Home Alone, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Wizard of Oz on a sprawling 70-foot screen while the Nashville Symphony performs the film score live. Jazz lovers can also enjoy intimate, cabaret-style seating for performances by George Benson, Michael Feinstein and more. Can’t make a concert? Free public tours of the Schermerhorn, offered most Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, take you behind the scenes to learn more about the Symphony’s home and rich history as Music City’s resident orchestra since 1946. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their awardwinning sauces, there is something to please every palate. See a World of Art at the Frist Center this Fall

his fall, there are five new exhibitions to explore at the Frist Center with artworks ranging from 10th century Persian earthenware to humorous letterpress works from Nashville printmakers. The exhibition Ink, Silk, and Gold: Islamic Art from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston makes its debut at the Frist Center and features nearly one hundred works of Islamic art, spanning the eighth to the twenty-first centuries. The exhibition offers a chronological and regional story of the dynamic and complex artistic traditions originating from across the vast expanse of the Islamic world—Spain to Indonesia—and represents almost all forms of media, including silver inlaid metalwork, Qur’an pages inscribed with gold, brocaded velvets, and luster ceramics. Shinique Smith: Wonder and Rainbows features the New York–based artist’s highly expressive paintings, sculptures, and installations that reflect influences as diverse as dance, fashion, Eastern philosophies, graffiti, Japanese calligraphy, poetry, lyrics and childhood wonder. Many of her collaged works contain recycled or reused objects, demonstrating her belief that personal possessions can inspire memories and shape our experience and identity. Yet such materials, particularly her bundles of cast-off clothing, also comment on the vast excess and waste in American consumerist society. The artist’s early years as a graffiti artist in Baltimore remain evident in her exuberant calligraphic strokes, which she often intermingles with worn materials from popular culture. The Frist Center debuts the third in a series of exhibitions about the human body in contemporary art organized by Frist Center Chief Curator Mark Scala, Phantom Bodies: The Human Aura in Art. The exhibition includes provocative artworks that address themes of trauma and loss, but also affirm the enduring force of the human spirit by conveying material traces, shadow and light, or the sublimation of the body into other forms of matter and energy. The international array of artists in the exhibition includes Magdalena Abakanowicz, Barry X Ball, Adam Fuss, Alicia Henry, Damien Hirst, Anish Kapoor, Sally Mann, Bill Viola, and more. Michelangelo: Sacred and Profane, Masterpiece Drawings from the Casa Buonarroti offers an intimate view into the mind of Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the giants in the history of Western art. A careful selection of drawings attests to the versatile artist’s activities as a sculptor, painter, architect, and military engineer. Exhibition highlights include a large and deeply moving Madonna and Child and several studies related to Michelangelo’s ambitious but unrealized project for the façade of San Lorenzo in Florence, the Medici family burial church. The works, which range from rapid sketches to presentation 50 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

drawings, all come from the Casa Buonarroti, Michelangelo’s family home in Florence, Italy. Finally, on November 6, Anthology: Visual Narratives from Nashville’s Print Community will open in the alwaysfree Conte Community Arts Gallery. Nashville is a storytelling town, and this juried exhibition celebrates the use of printing techniques by small presses and individual artists to convey fascinating narratives in the form of graphic novels, illustrations, poetry, and other media. To get the full Frist Center experience, plan to stop by the café before or after checking out the galleries for delicious sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, unique holiday gift, the gift shop has a beautiful selection of handcrafted jewelry, ceramics, framed prints and posters, stationery, and much more! Visit fristcenter.org for more information.

The Grammy Gallery Coming To Music City

T

he highly anticipated GRAMMY Gallery will open early 2016 and will be an 8,500 square foot expansion of the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum, which is located on the first floor of the Nashville Historic Municipal Auditorium. Through educational interactive stations, the permanent GRAMMY Gallery will explore the creative process of making music in a hands on, immersive environment — from songwriting and MHFM exterior producing to engineering, mixing, singing, and rapping. The gallery will explore the role of the DJ and the history of the GRAMMY Awards — the pre-eminent peerrecognized award for musical excellence. In addition, the Gallery will include an exhibit about the history of the GRAMMY Awards and a 3-D view of the making of the iconic gramophone-shaped GRAMMY Award. “The Musicians Hall of Fame is a diverse multi-genre museum, much like the GRAMMY Museum,” said Joe Chambers, Executive Director of the museum. “Our collection of iconic musical instruments that have been used in live and studio sessions by some of the greatest musicians in the world, married with the GRAMMY Museum’s state-of-theart, interactive, and educational gallery, will be a great experience for all visitors to Music City.” The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum honors the background musicians who played on thousands of iconic albums throughout history. Yes, Nashville is stereotypically country, but it is by no means the only genre that has been or is being created here. This museum sheds light on the recording sessions that were otherwise closed to the public. Visitors learn what went on during sessions such as Elvis recording “In the Ghetto” at American Original guitars from Nashville “A” Team Sound Studios 54 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

in Memphis; Ringo Starr recording “Beaucoup of Blues” at Studio 19 in Nashville, or The Beach Boys recording their countless hits with The Wrecking Crew at Los Angeles’s Capitol Records. The GRAMMY Gallery at Musicians Hall of Fame is a one-of-akind public-private partnership that repurposes a historic city property at a fraction of new construction cost and adds a unique destination and experience for Music City visitors and residents. “We are excited to develop our one-of-a-kind interactive experiences at the Musicians Hall of Fame,” said Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum. “It will explore the intricacies of the recording process, from beginning to end, in a city where so much great music is made.” The Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum also hosts an annual induction ceremony and concert which honors new members, nominated by the American Federation of Musicians and other music industry professionals, and ensures the continued growth of the museum. The 2014 induction included greats such as Barbara Mandrell, Peter Frampton, and Randy Bachman. Nashville mogul Mike Curb was inducted with a Non-performance Award and Roy Orbison posthumously received the inaugural Iconic Riff Award.

The Museum is located at 401 Gay St. on the first floor of the Nashville Historical Municipal Auditorium. For breaking news and exclusive content visit www.musicianshalloffame.com, follow @ MHFM on social media, or call (615) 244-3263.
