The Nashville Symphony

T

he Nashville Symphony

kicks off its 69th season this September, and with more than 100 classical, pops and jazz concerts, as well as dozens of special events featuring top-flight artists, catching a performance by “Music City’s Biggest Band” is a great addition to any Nashville visit. Thanks to numerous GRAMMY® Awards and nominations and a track record as one of America’s most prolific recording orchestras, the Nashville Symphony has earned international acclaim, and the stunning Schermerhorn Symphony Center – home to the Symphony since 2006 – is one of downtown Nashville’s crown jewels. Inspired by some of the world’s finest concert halls, the 1,844-seat venue caters to the sound of natural instruments, providing vivid acoustical clarity, warmth and reverberation. Put a top-tier orchestra in a world-class concert hall, with a full schedule of amazing artists and repertoire, and you’ve got an entire year’s worth of unforgettable live music experiences. At the heart of the orchestra’s programming, the Aegis Sciences Classical Series highlights some of the greatest works of music ever written, including Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos and Mozart’s Requiem. The Nashville Symphony’s commitment to contemporary American music means that you’ll also hear exciting new music by some of today’s leading composers. Extras like preconcert lectures and affordable “Date Night” ticket packages, including one with a $100 gift card for dinner at the nearby Omni hotel’s Kitchen Notes restaurant, make classical concerts at the Schermerhorn something any music lover will relish. Looking for a fun way to spend a Friday morning? Join the Nashville Symphony for one-hour “Coffee & Classics” concerts that include free coffee and pastries and an informative, informal talk from the stage by Music Director Giancarlo Guerrero. Families can get in on the fun too with Saturday-morning Pied Piper Children’s concerts. Presented with local partners

like the Nashville Zoo and Adventure Science Center, these visually and musically stimulating performances are perfect for kids of all ages, with familyfriendly pre-concert activities like arts and crafts and the Symphony’s popular Instrument Petting Zoo. Great classical music is just the start of everything that the Nashville Symphony has to offer. Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Kristin Chenowith, Alabama, Don McLean, Burt Bacharach and The Irish Tenors are just a few of the special guest artists who will perform with the orchestra this season. Tribute shows to both the Eagles and U2 will feature a full rock band joining the orchestra for each group’s greatest hits. Or you can watch classic movies like Home Alone, Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Wizard of Oz on a sprawling 70-foot screen while the Nashville Symphony performs the film score live. Jazz lovers can also enjoy intimate, cabaret-style seating for performances by George Benson, Michael Feinstein and more. Can’t make a concert? Free public tours of the Schermerhorn, offered most Wednesday and Saturday afternoons, take you behind the scenes to learn more about the Symphony’s home and rich history as Music City’s resident orchestra since 1946. And for Nashville’s best selection of music-themed gifts, classical CDs and DVDs, jewelry and much more, be sure to check out the Symphony Store. Goo Goo Cluster In 1912, in a copper kettle at the Standard Candy Company at Clark & First Avenue in Nashville, Tennessee, the first combination candy bar was invented. A roundish mound of luscious caramel, creamy marshmallow nougat and fresh roasted peanuts all covered in real milk chocolate, the Goo Goo Cluster has been delighting Nashvillians and visitors to Music City ever since. Goo Goo Clusters were originally hand dipped and sold without wrappers under glass at drug store candy counters. With the dawn of hand wrapping, a team of ladies was responsible for swaddling the Goo Goo Clusters in tin foil before they were sold. Eventually, machinery was put in place to automate wrapping the candy. Today, the process is so streamlined that Standard Candy Company in Nashville can produce 20,000 clusters in one hour! In the years since the birth of the Original Goo Goo Cluster, the company has introduced two new flavors to their product line: the Supreme, which replaces peanuts with pecans, and the Peanut Butter, a peanut butter center sprinkled with crunchy peanuts then covered in real milk chocolate. Last year saw another exciting addition to the brand’s offerings when Goo Goo Cluster opened its flagship retail store, the Goo Goo Shop, in the SoBro area of downtown Nashville. The Goo Goo Shop is no ordinary retail store. Visitors have the opportunity to take a walk through history as they peruse a 100+ year timeline complete with artifacts from the Goo Goo archives. But the sweetest part of the new space (pun intended) may be the glassedencased confectionery kitchen, where Premium Goo Goos are made by hand daily in full view of visitors. Premium Goo Goos, the newest addition to the company’s product offerings, are sold exclusively at the Goo Goo Shop. This 4 ounce confection is more than twice the size of an Original Goo Goo Cluster, and comes in various flavors. The Premium menu rotates periodically and new flavors are introduced on a regular basis. In recent months, some of the most popular have been a peanut butter and pretzel version and a toasted pistachio, cherry and dark chocolate ganache version. Visit often to try them all! For more information on Goo Goo Cluster and the Goo Goo Shop, visit www.googoo.com. 14

White Lightning, Southern Hospitality, and George Jones

G

eorge Jones Museum offers something for everyone

Less than six months after it first opened the doors, the George Jones Museum has quickly established itself as the go-to place for visitors and locals alike. With more than 40,000 square feet of space spread over three floors, the entertainment complex provides visitors with respite from summer heat, a great place to grab an early breakfast or a late dinner, and award-winning spirits from the White Lightning Moonshine bar. Your visit starts on the first floor, where vista windows at both ends of the facility provide visitors with two views of Nashville. On the 2nd Avenue side, visitors can take in the sounds of live music while sipping on signature cocktails in the bar, which overlooks the historic street through large, open-air windows. If you enjoy that cocktail, make sure to pick up a bottle or three of White Lightning Moonshine, the 2015 SIP Award-winning libations sold exclusively at the George Jones Museum. Passing through the gift shop, you arrive in Choices Restaurant, one of Nashville’s newest and most popular eateries. Featuring culinary creations fit for any appetite, you won’t want to miss the fried green tomatoes or the bread pudding. Southern charm meets Southern cuisine at Choices, and diners can enjoy breakfast, lunch, or dinner while taking in the panoramic views of the Cumberland River as it winds its way through town. If music history is your delight, you’ll want to book an extra hour or two to take in the George Jones Museum, which occupies the entirety of the second floor of the complex. Featuring exhibits from each stage in George’s life, from his rural childhood, through his early days on the radio, all the way through to the memorial concert, the museum chronicles his life and gives fans 18

an intimate look behind the scenes for one of country’s most defining artists. Assembled from the private collections of Nancy Jones, each artifact provides insights into the man’s life, his musical career, and his legacy. You may not need that rocking chair, but take a load off in the theatre anyway, and enjoy an in-depth documentary exploring Jones’s life. After you’re finished with the film, head over to the recording studio and lay down a track or two with the

Possum himself. And, before you go, be sure to take a selfie in the giant rocking chair, which used to adorn the gates of the Jones estate each Christmas. After the museum, you’re sure to have worked up an appetite and a thirst. So head on up to the George, one of Nashville’s hottest night spots. The rooftop bar offers sweeping views of downtown Nashville, the Cumberland River, and all points beyond. Sip on a cocktail and maybe have a few appetizers while you listen to live music from some of the best up-andcoming musicians in Nashville. Or, just sit and peoplewatch, because you never know who’s going to turn up at the George. With something for everyone, the George Jones Museum is sure to be a place you’ll tell your friends about when you get home. For more information, visit www.georgejonesmuseum.com. The George Jones Museum is located on 2nd Avenue, next door to the Wildhorse Saloon.

N

ancy Jones invites you for a walk through George Jones’s life. Experience a winding wall of memorabilia and create some very special memories of your own, including singing with the legendary George Jones. Your experience only gets larger as you visit the Museum gift shop, stop by the tasting bar for a sip or two of White Lightning, enjoy a flavorful dish at Possum Holler Café and then take a ride to the rooftop and see the best view in Downtown Nashville. ountry music fans from around the world visit year after year to experience the unique country music history that comes alive as you journey through the Willie Nelson and Friends Museum. This is a very personal museum that evolved over the years from friendships established by museum founders, Frank and Jeanie Oakley. The Oakley’s were longtime friends with not only Willie Nelson but many of his legendary country music friends as well. There are lots of personal items to see donated by legends like Webb Pierce and Faron Young who were regulars at the museum prior to their passing. The museum has always been known as a great hangout for many of the stars you’ll see represented in the many exhibits. The museum is true country music history and showcases an “All Star” line-up of some of traditional country music’s greatest stars! Among the many highlights on display include the Martin guitar and paystub from Willie

Nelson’s Grand Ole Opry debut in 1963. You’ll also see many personal items of the great Patsy Cline. Also featured are several “Nudie of Hollywood” suits worn by the legends Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Webb Pierce and Porter Wagoner. The Willie Nelson and Friends Museum is undeniably one of the best values in Nashville. It’s a family operated and family friendly attraction with plenty of free parking. You are also welcome to take photographs during your journey so don’t forget your camera!

re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

Nashville’s renowned Johnny Cash Museum has only been opened less than two years but has expanded three times during that period. The latest expansion includes tripling the size of the museum store and adding a Bongo Java Café featuring Nashville’s finest coffee and coffee drinks as well as gourmet café fare. The original Bongo Java has the distinction of being Nashville’s oldest and most honored coffee house, having opened its first location in 1993. Bongo is known for it’s use of local ingredients and coffee beans are organic and fare trade. The café offers a delicious assortment of pastries and baked goods as well as sandwiches, salads and other items made fresh daily in the facility’s new kitchen. Signature items include Johnny Cash’s Iron Pot Chili made from a recipe created by The Man In Black himself. Other favorites include a Fried Bologna and Pimento Cheese sandwich and The Elvis, which features The King’s favorite peanut butter, honey, bananas and bacon served on honey wheat bread. With the current expansion, the museum has expanded its daily operating hours from 8:00AM to 7:00PM, seven days a week. The Bongo Java café opens daily at 8:00AM.

The Shell Station

The Zoo’s New Interactive Tortoise Exhibit

T

he Shell Station, Nashville Zoo’s newest interactive exhibit featuring Sulcata tortoises, is now open to the public.

“Nashville Zoo is thrilled to add another immersive experience that engages our visitors and connects them to the wild in a hands-on way,” said Rick Schwartz, Zoo president. “We thank Scott and Tracie Hamilton for funding this exhibit and adding another great educational opportunity for our guests.” The Shell Station features up to 24 Sulcata tortoises that range in age from three to five years old. Visitors are permitted in the exhibit and can walk around with the tortoises and touch their shell. Zoo keepers will be available at all times to answer questions and supervise the area. “We are so honored to be a part of Nashville Zoo’s 34 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

growth,” said Tracie Hamilton. “This exhibit is another fine example of the Zoo’s ability to offer exceptional experiences to the Nashville community.” The Shell Station is open during the Zoo’s regular hours, 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is included with admission or membership. Sulcata tortoises are native to the Sahara desert in North Africa. They are the third largest tortoise in the world and can live to be over 70 years old. Because they are native in hot dry areas with no permanent water source, tortoises are well adapted for spending long periods of time without hydration. Sulcata tortoises are listed as Vulnerable by the International Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and wild populations are decreasing due to desertification, overgrazing, population expansion and the collection of wild tortoises for trade. Nashville’s Artists Talk About Their Art at

H

HAYNES GALLERIES

aynes Galleries summer exhibition “Art Nashville” has been extended through September 26 due to its popularity. Represented are some of Music City’s most acclaimed contemporary Realists and artists who hold Nashville close to their hearts. Viewers enjoy the allure and variety of photographs with a photojournalist edge to Old Master inspired paintings and ceramic sculptures that play tricks on the eyes.

We are extending the show in order to host special events that feature these artists. Our first one is popular local artist and instructor Jody Thompson. He will give a still-life painting demonstration, Saturday September 12 from 10 am to Noon. Thompson has years of experience giving art instruction and will lead the audience through his process while answering questions. Featured during “Art Nashville,” John Guider’s dramatic photography captures the beauty of the Tennessee landscape and Guider’s many worldly adventures. Guider has traveled all over finding splendor in remote places. Most of the show images are the platinum prints, a extraordinary process that has become less prominent today due to the time consuming process and cost. The deep blacks and rich grays of the platinum prints are rich and compelling. John Baeder garnered international acclaim for his unidealized American diner scenes of the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. His works featured in “Art Nashville” are raw photographs of the culture of everyday life— mom-and-pop shops, gas stations, tire service centers— and smaller blackand-white shots from his travels. Baeder’s collection of work has been internationally celebrated for more than forty years. Alan LeQuire’s larger than life sculptures can be seen throughout “Art John Guider Tennessee State Capital Nashville,” just as they Platinum print • 23.5 x 35 inches can be found installed throughout Nashville. LeQuire comes from a line of artistic Nashvillians and studied at Vanderbilt before 42 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

going off to France and Italy to continue his education in bronze casting. Nashville’s new generation of artists are represented by Richard Greathouse and Amanda Hope Cook. Born and raised in town, Greathouse trained at the internationally renowned Florence Amanda Hope Cook Academy of Art. Printers Alley He has emerged as Oil on panel • 24 x 36 inches one of today’s top portraitist, producing paintings that echo the Old World but with a contemporary edge. Amanda Hope Cook embraces a vestige of modern life— neon signs. She seeks them out as they are a part of the city’s history and ever changing landscape. “Art Nashville” is a celebration of artists of many trades. With nationally acclaimed art, it offers a variety of works for native and visiting audiences alike. Located just off historic Music Row in Midtown, Haynes Galleries is proud to be the only Nashville gallery representing American and Contemporary Realist art in multiple mediums. It presents a distinguished roster of today’s premier and emerging Realists. The gallery also offers work by several American masters of the 19th & 20th centuries. Unique in many ways, Haynes Galleries is the result of a passion for connoisseurship and appreciation of fine art. Hours are 10 to 4 pm, Tuesday through Saturday or by appointment.

Jack’s Bar-B-Que

F

or “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee”, you’ve got to visit Jack’s Bar-B-Que where they proudly serve barbeque from “Pit to Plate”. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their awardwinning sauces, there is something to please every palate. Their cooking method and awardwinning sauces make Jack’s the best. After applying their dry rub (spices and herbs) meat is smoked for 18 hours at 250 degrees. From “Pit to Plate”, it is sliced and chopped before serving and you will notice a pink smoke ring. That’s the real signature of hickory smoked barbeque. Jack recommends pouring sauces right before eating. Award-winning sauces include Kansas City Style (mild, sweet and smoky), Tennessee Original (tangy vinegar base), Texas Sweet Hot (tomato base), XXX-911 (cross between TN & TX with a kick), Carolina Style (mustard base), and Music City White Sauce (mayo, horseradish base). Purchase any four of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Famous Sauces and get a FREE Hand Rub! When you dine at Jack’s, you will see for yourself why Jack’s Bar-B-Que has been named “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee” by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today. 3 Locations to serve you (T.C.B) Trinity, Charlotte and Broadway. DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big. 50 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee. DID YOU KNOW… The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station. September/October 2015

A must see in Nashville

he Johnny Cash Museum features the largest collection of Johnny Cash memorabilia in the world. From The Man in Black’s earliest childhood artifacts to the very last song he wrote, you’ll find it here. Exhibits chronicle Johnny’s life and provide a very personal and unique glimpse into his world. Depicted in stunning graphics, artifacts and interactive technology, visitors are provided a three dimensional walk through the life and legend of this international icon. Our exhibits include Johnny’s stage costumes, instruments, personal letters, artwork and handwritten songs as well as artifacts from family members and notable friends. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000. Our newest exhibit, Legends of Sun Records, features artifacts, films and musical recordings from Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis. Among the artifacts featured are some of the earliest Presley pieces ever discovered, a pair of Roy Orbison’s signature eyeglasses, handwritten lyrics to the Rock and Roll anthem Blue Suede Shoes and much more. Cash, who sold more than 100 million records, is one of the world’s best known and loved entertainers. His concerts tours took him around the world and he is known in every corner of the globe. He has received virtually every award the entertainment world has to offer and is the only entertainer in history to be inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country Music, Songwriter’s and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His Facebook page has over

10 million followers; more than most living entertainers. He posted over 130 hits on the Billboard Country singles chart. Cash placed at least two singles on the Country charts for 38 consecutive years, including an amazing 25 hits between 1958 and 1960. Johnny Cash is the only artist to have songs on the Billboard charts for six consecutive decades. He received two of the Nation’s greatest honors; The National Medal of Arts, presented by President George W. Bush and the Kennedy Center Honors, presented by President Bill Clinton. He amassed 17 Grammy awards during the span of his career; among the most awarded to any entertainer in history. Personalities ranging from Snoop Dog, the members of U2, Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Springsteen and several U.S. Presidents, among many others are self-professed Cash fans, demonstrating his broad popularity which spans age and culture. Among the many highlights are the handwritten lyrics to his classic hits I Walk the Line and Folsom Prison Blues. You’ll also see a stone wall from Johnny and June’s storied home on the lake in Hendersonville including their precious antique furnishings and personal belongings. Our Museum Store features the largest selection of Cash souvenirs, apparel and rare collectibles available anywhere in the world. Come and visit the Johnny Cash Museum. Our staff members include Cash family members and friends who love to visit and share stories with our guests. No trip to Nashville would be complete without a visit to the Johnny Cash Museum.
