A

By Bob Doerschuk

few years ago, Rolling Stone surprised hardly anyone by anointing Nashville as having America’s “best music scene.” Of course, everybody in Music City already knew that, and since that benediction in 2011 locals have worn the crown proudly. However, as raucous as the honky-tonks are seven nights a week on Lower Broadway, as elegant as the classical programs are at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, there is one four-day stretch each year when Nashville beats even its own high standards for spectacle, celebration and nonstop music. This year, it happens from Thursday morning, June 5, through Sunday night, June 8, at the annual CMA Music Festival. As in all of the its previous incarnations, going back to the first one in 1972, this is the red-letter day on every Country Music fan’s calendar – a chance to watch their favorite artists on multiple stages during the day and in the four nightly all-star concerts at LP Field, home of the Tennessee Titans, and for early arrivals to savor international Country talent on Monday, June 2, at the CMA GlobaLive concert on a free outdoor stage in Downtown Nashville. Luke Bryan Many superstars are already confirmed for these stadium shows, with Dierks Bentley, Luke Bryan, Brantley Gilbert, Rascal Flatts and Tim McGraw on Thursday; Jason Aldean, The Band Perry, Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton on Friday; Florida Georgia Line, Little Big Town, Darius Rucker, Keith Urban and Chris Young on Saturday; and Hunter Hayes, Lady Antebellum, Brad Paisley, Thomas Rhett and Zac Brown Band closing the Festival on Sunday night. Collectively, these artists have won 80 CMA Awards and can account for 289 CMA Award nominations. Because attendees have come to expect that level of talent at the Festival, it’s no surprise that tickets for this year’s shows sold out a full 15 weeks before the Festival 8

getaway nashville and middle tennessee

began, nine weeks sooner than in 2013, though none of the artists had yet been announced. From fireworks shooting skyward nightly at LP Field to intimate acoustic performances, that’s enough to draw Country Music lovers each year. But CMA Music Fest also offers hours of activities, all free, open to the public and arranged conveniently into “neighborhoods” for easy access. Through three blocks on Broadway lined by historic honky-tonks, restaurants and shops, The Buckle bustles with free food samples, trip giveaways, chances to show off your karaoke skills, competitive games and much more. Other opportunities to connect, relax and enjoy fill the nearby Fan Alley. Along the banks of the Cumberland River, tomorrow’s headliners share the bill with classic acts at the Chevrolet Riverfront Stage. More popular performers shine each day on the Bud Light Stage at the Craig Morgan Bridgestone Arena Plaza. And the BMI Tailgate Party offers sizzling sets from artists and DJs to thousands of fans passing by on their way to the LP Field extravaganzas. There’s even more, in the Music City Center. Nashville’s new, sprawling exhibition complex is headquarters for the AT&T U-verse Fan Fair X, whose attractions include performance stages, the Fan Fair X Marketplace, artist Q&A sessions, autograph and photo ops with stars and some special delights. Last year, Little Big Town for example, visitors to Fan Fair X cheered on Lady Antebellum as they hosted and won their own Ping Pong & Songs table tennis tournament, which raised money for the group’s charitable LadyAID Fund. (To buy tickets to the AT&T U-Verse Fan Fair X, visit CMAfest.com.) No wonder more than 80,000 fans, from all 50 states and more than two dozen countries, journeyed to last year’s CMA Music Festival. And along with memories of great music and good times, each could take pride in the fact that their ticket purchases help invest in a worthy cause. Half of all Festival proceeds support projects that further music education, with more than $8.9 million donated to The CMA Foundation’s “Keep the Music Playing” campaign – a donation enhanced by the fact that each performer at CMA Music Fest appears for free. Learn more about this unforgettable event at CMAfest.com. And catch highlights of this year’s Festival on “CMA Music Festival: Country’s Night to Rock,” airing this summer on ABC.

The Willie Nelson & Friends Museum and General Store

A family owned Nashville Tradition for over 35 Years!

C

ountry music fans from around the world visit year after year to experience the unique country music history that comes alive as you journey through the Willie Nelson and Friends Museum. This is a very personal museum that evolved over the years from friendships established by museum founders, Frank and Jeanie Oakley. The Oakley’s were longtime friends with not only Willie Nelson but many of his legendary country music friends as well. There are lots of personal items to see donated by legends like Webb Pierce and Faron Young who were regulars at the museum prior to their passing. The museum has always been known as a great hangout for many of the stars you’ll see represented in the many exhibits. The museum is true country music history and showcases an “All Star” line-up of some of traditional country music’s greatest stars! Among the many highlights on display include the Martin guitar and paystub from Willie

Nelson’s Grand Ole Opry debut in 1963. You’ll also see many personal items of the great Patsy Cline. Also featured are several “Nudie of Hollywood” suits worn by the legends Lefty Frizzell, George Jones, Webb Pierce and Porter Wagoner. The Willie Nelson and Friends Museum is undeniably one of the best values in Nashville. It’s a family operated and family friendly attraction with plenty of free parking. You are also welcome to take photographs during your journey so don’t forget your camera!

he Mantz Brothers are comprised of the duo Jordan & Holdan Mantz out of Richfield, Wisconsin. The duo began singing together at a young age. During High School, they were recognized by the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) four times. After high school, they knew they had to continue singing and performing so they started their band. They’ve been performing together throughout the country over the past few years and are gaining a strong following. The Mantz Brothers just finished recording their debut EP, titled ‘Seven Saturday Nights’. “I first heard the Mantz Brothers doing an acoustic set on Country Cruising earlier this year. I knew right away that with the right songs and a grooving band – we could make a great record! Fast Forward – I produced their EP here in Nashville and we’re all excited to let the fans hear it! said Producer, Eddie Kilgallon. They’ve performed at major events such as, the Largest Country Music Festival - CMA Fest, the World’s Largest Music Festival – Milwaukee’s Summerfest and the Largest Music Festival at Sea – Country Cruising!

The

MANTZ Brothers

They’ve opened for many national acts, including Montgomery Gentry, The Lost Trailers, Emerson Drive, JT Hodges, Parmalee, Chase Rice, Jerrod Niemann and others. “The Mantz Brothers are the real deal! They bring it each and every performance” said Frank Lena, Artist Manager, AStar Promotions. This dynamic country duo has a strong passion for music and they deliver high energy performances that engage audiences. They play today’s hottest hits, classics that built the foundation of country music, and their own originals. They have a very a strong Midwest following and keep the crowd engaged. They bring a unique sound with their harmonization; they create one voice from two great singers and they naturally connect with their audience. Along with their growing music career, The Mantz Brothers are very active in their community and serve as local Fireman for the Richfield Fire Department. re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

I would highly recommend that visitors to Nashville experience Nashville Nightlife

The “Best of Country” Dinner and Show, throughout their season, includes guest stars such as “Opry Star” Jeannie Seely, “The Fiddle Man” Tim Watson, Tommy Cash, Diana Murrell, Paula Poe (from the Tammy Wynette Show) and many others. music city trivia & fun facts

DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big. 32 getaway nashville and middle tennessee

DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.

DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.

DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee. DID YOU KNOW… The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station. May/June 2014

Jack’s Bar-B-Que

F

or “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee”, you’ve got to visit Jack’s Bar-B-Que where they proudly serve barbeque from “Pit to Plate”. Offering Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, smoked turkey, Texas sausage, St. Louis style ribs, smoked chicken, and other Southern cuisine with their awardwinning sauces, there is something to please every palate. Their cooking method and awardwinning sauces make Jack’s the best. After applying their dry rub (spices and herbs) meat is smoked for 18 hours at 250 degrees. From “Pit to Plate”, it is sliced and chopped before serving and you will notice a pink smoke ring. That’s the real signature of hickory smoked barbeque. Jack recommends pouring sauces right before eating. Award-winning sauces include Kansas City Style (mild, sweet and smoky), Tennessee Original (tangy vinegar base), Texas Sweet Hot (tomato base), XXX-911 (cross between TN & TX with a kick), Carolina Style (mustard base), and Music City White Sauce (mayo, horseradish base). Purchase any four of Jack’s Bar-B-Que Famous Sauces and get a FREE Hand Rub! When you dine at Jack’s, you will see for yourself why Jack’s Bar-B-Que has been named “The Best Bar-B-Que in Nashville, Tennessee” by the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Southern Living, and USA Today. 3 Locations to serve you (T.C.B) Trinity, Charlotte and Broadway. All 3 historic locations, 334 West Trinity Lane at Historic Talbot Corner, 1601 Charlotte Avenue on the Historic Prison Grounds at the foot of Capital Hill and 416 Broadway at the heart of the Honky Tonks on Lower Broadway. “Taking Care of Business since 1976”. Depicted in stunning graphics, artifacts and interactive technology, visitors are provided a three dimensional walk through the life and legend of this international icon. Our exhibits include Johnny’s stage costumes, instruments, personal letters, artwork and handwritten songs as well as artifacts from family members and notable friends. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000. Cash, who sold more than 100 million records, is one of the world’s best known and loved entertainers. His concert tours took him around the world and he is known in every corner of the globe. He has received virtually every award the entertainment world has to offer and is the only entertainer in history to be inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country Music, Songwriter’s and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His Facebook page has over 10 million followers; more than most living entertainers. He posted over 130 hits on the Billboard Country singles chart, more than anyone in history, except George Jones. (Discounting duets by both men, Cash’s total exceeds Jones.) Cash placed at least two singles on the Country charts for 38 consecutive years, including an amazing 25 hits between 1958 and 1960.

Johnny Cash is the only artist to have songs on the Billboard charts for six consecutive decades. He received two of the Nation’s greatest honors; The National Medal of Arts, presented by President George W. Bush and the Kennedy Center Honors, presented by President Bill Clinton. He amassed 17 Grammy awards during the span of his career; among the most awarded to any entertainer in history. Personalities ranging from Snoop Dog, the members of U2, Bob Dylan, Justin Timberlake, Kris Kristofferson, Bruce Springsteen and several U.S. Presidents, among many others are self-professed Cash fans, demonstrating his broad popularity which spans age and culture. Among the many highlights are the handwritten lyrics to his classic hits I Walk the Line and Folsom Prison Blues. You’ll also see a stone wall from Johnny and June’s storied home on the lake in Hendersonville including their precious antique furnishings and personal belongings. Our Museum Store features the largest selection of Cash souvenirs, apparel and rare collectibles available anywhere in the world. Come and visit the Johnny Cash Museum. Our staff members include Cash family members and friends who love to visit and share stories with our guests. No trip to Nashville would be complete without a visit to the Johnny Cash Museum.
