Enjoy Fall In The Country with the
Grand Ole Opry
N
othing says “Nashville” quite like a night at the Grand Ole Opry – the show that made country music famous—, and there’s no better season than autumn to visit the Opry Complex. With star-packed shows in both September and October, plus the Opry’s birthday celebration throughout October, any given Opry show this fall is a mustsee for folks visiting Music City. Opry shows in September will feature some of today’s biggest country music stars as well as all-time favorites, including Deana Carter, Terri Clark, Diamond Rio, Crystal Gayle, Hunter Hayes, Dustin Lynch, Craig Morgan, Marty Stuart, Thompson Square, and Mel Tillis. In October, the Opry is set to celebrate its birthday with weeks of special shows and events, and conveniently falls in the same month heralded as “country music month” from coast to coast. Among those confirmed to visit the Opry stage during its birthday month are the likes of Clint Black, Joe Diffie, Marty Stuart, and Steve Wariner, who will also perform a special birthday matinee concert on Saturday, October 5. Fans can do it all that first weekend in October with the Grand Ole Opry Birthday Bash package, which includes a ticket to an evening Opry show as well as to Wariner’s matinee concert, and more. October will also feature special Opry Country Classics shows on Thursday evenings at the Ryman Auditorium in downtown Nashville. These shows shine a spotlight on some of country music’s most-loved classic country songs that made many country music lovers fans. The shows include performances from today’s artists as well as popular legends of the genre, and guests will hear performances of classic songs such as “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Crazy,” and many others that perhaps inspired the artists performing them as they were making their own paths to country music stardom. Meanwhile, CMA award-winner Blake Shelton is set to welcome fans to the Opry House daily as the video host of

daytime Opry House Backstage Pass Tours, a one-of-a-kind experience that gives guests a look behind the scenes of country’s most famous show. For guests attending an Opry show this fall, a post-show tour is available and features video host Darius Rucker, the Opry’s most recently inducted member. To experience the Opry like a true VIP, the Opry has made available the Behind The Opry Curtain VIP Tour. Now guests can go backstage as preparations for the show are happening, see the inner workings of what goes on behind the scenes just before a show begins, and even stand backstage as the big red curtain goes up for the first performance of the night. Many of today’s biggest country music stars grace the Opry stage frequently, and can be heard saying what a special experience it is to play the storied stage. It all started back in 1925, when Nashville radio station WSM announcer George D. Hay introduced fiddle player Uncle Jimmy Thompson as the first performer on a new show called the “WSM Barn Dance”. Now in its 88th year, the show Hay started has launched countless country music careers and led the way for Nashville to become Music City. Early Opry performers such as Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, and Bill Monroe became musical foundations for the Opry during its years in residence at the historic Ryman Auditorium, later welcoming to the stage artists who would become entertainment icons in their own right, including Patsy Cline, George Jones, and Bill Anderson. Today, hundreds of thousands of people make pilgrimages from around the world to see and hear Opry greats including Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Loretta Lynn, Vince Gill, Alison Krauss, Riders In the Sky, Connie Smith, and Keith Urban. Millions of other fans tune in to enjoy the Opry via 650 AM WSM, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, syndicated radio, opry. com, or the Opry’s mobile app. Today’s fans also get more upto-the-minute information and news by following the Grand Ole Opry on Facebook and Twitter. Not bad for 88! Happy Birthday, Grand Ole Opry!

re you looking for some good ole’ home cooking, exceptional Southern Hospitality and live entertainment that will have you singing along and tapping your feet? Then Nashville Nightlife is definitely the place to go! We recently had the pleasure of a night out at the theater. We were warmly greeted at the door and given our tickets. We browsed the lobby area where we found unique, one-of-a-kind souvenirs and gifts. Before long, the hostess called our name and personally seated our party in the dinner theater. A smiling, friendly waitress took our beverage order and directed us to the buffet table. There we found a lovely salad bar and a first-class buffet with country fried chicken and ribs as their entrees that night, complete with all the fixins’. Everything was homemade right down to the peach cobbler for dessert. I had the warm feeling of being in my grandma’s kitchen. Once the entertainment starts, I guarantee you will be dancing in your seat. We were treated to such a wide variety of music from Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, and

music city trivia & fun facts
DidYouKNOW? DID YOU KNOW… The amount on the price tag on Minnie Pearl’s hat was $1.98. The Centerville native and Grand Ole Opry star would eventually buy a home next door to the Governor’s Mansion on Curtiswood Lane in Nashville. DID YOU KNOW… That President Theodore Roosevelt coined the phrase “good to the last drop”, words that became a national slogan, after sipping coffee at Maxwell House Hotel. The coffee was a local product of the Cheek family. Their family home is now Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville’s Athena Parthenos is the tallest indoor sculpture in the Western world. She stands an impressive 42 feet high in the temple of the Parthenon. DID YOU KNOW… Elvis recorded more than 200 of his songs at RCA’s Historic Studio B on Music Row. The red, blue and green lights found in the studio are a remnant from one of Elvis’s Christmas albums. Unable to get in the holiday spirit while recording in July, he was having trouble finishing the album. The crew solved the problem by installing holiday-colored lights, putting up an artificial Christmas tree in the corner and cranking the air conditioner up as high as it would go to create the festive atmosphere. DID YOU KNOW… Country singer Randy Travis was a cook and dishwasher at the Nashville Palace before he made it big. 34 getaway nashville and middle tennessee
DID YOU KNOW… Belle Meade Plantation was famous for breeding thoroughbred horses. Iroquois, bred at the Belle Meade Farm, was the first American horse to win the English Derby. In addition to Iroquois, there were two other famous horses that can trace their lineage back to Belle Meade: Seabiscuit and War Admiral, both made popular again by the 2011 best-selling novel. For generations removed, the 1930’s horses were descendents of the sires of Bonnie Scotland, Belle Meade’s prize horse, making the family rivalry at the Plantation run deep. DID YOU KNOW… In 1941, Nashville was granted the first FM license in the United States. Music City then became the first to enjoy static-free radio. DID YOU KNOW… The Frist Center for Visual Arts is located in what was formerly Nashville’s main post office, a city landmark, placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. The Center went to great lengths to preserve the historical integrity of the building, as the building itself is a work of art. DID YOU KNOW… African-American artist and native Nashvillan Will Edmonson was the first black to be honored with a one-man exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Edmonson, the son of former slaves, created primitive limestone carvings of animals, angels, Biblical characters, and even celebrities. A photo spread of his work in Harper’s Bazaar led to the historic 1937 exhibit in New York City. Today, his works are on display at Cheekwood.
DID YOU KNOW… Nashville was founded on Christmas Eve 1779 along the banks of the Cumberland River. Two teams of pioneers set forth from the Carolinas to found the new city. Upon arrival, they immediately began building Fort Nashborough. Among the pioneers was Rachel Donelson, who would later become the wife of Andrew Jackson. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson, the 7th president of the United States, boasts a driveway in the shape of a guitar. Legend says that the driveway was so shaped to please his daughter-in-law Emily. Nashvillians like to think it was a good sign of things to come. DID YOU KNOW… Standard Candy Company, founded in 1901, created the GooGoo, a true Nashville delight marrying peanuts, caramel, marshmallow and milk chocolate together for a tasty cluster of candy. Today Standard Candy Company uses more than 3 million pounds of chocolate a year. Legend has it that GOO stands for Grand Ole Opry. DID YOU KNOW… After a May 1885 sermon given by the Reverend Sam Jones at a tent revival, Captain Tom Ryman became an instant convert and immediately began raising funds to build a church. Upon his death in 1904, the church he built as the Union Gospel Tabernacle, was renamed in his honor - Ryman Auditorium. The iconic venue would later host such performers as Enrico Caruso, Katharine Hepburn, and Bob Hope, as well as the Grand Ole Opry from 1943-1974. Not surprisingly, in 2003, 2004, 2010 and 2011, the Ryman was named Theatre of the Year by Pollstar Magazine. Today, the Ryman is open for tours during the day and for concerts by artists of all genres at night.
DID YOU KNOW… Oprah Winfrey was raised in Nashville by her father Vernon Winfrey. While a sophomore at Tennessee State University (TSU), she was hired as a news anchor at WTVF-TV/News Channel 5, making her the first female and first African American in Nashville to hold such a job. DID YOU KNOW… That the Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum is an architectural wonder in itself? One side of the building is a RKO-style radio tower while the main building, with windows resembling a piano keyboard, ends in a Cadillac tailfin-style flourish. DID YOU KNOW… President Richard Nixon was onstage when the Grand Ole Opry broadcast its first show in the new Opry House in 1974. The former President played “God Bless America” on the piano and Roy Acuff showed him how to yo-yo. DID YOU KNOW… Nashville is known the world over as “Music City” because WSM radio announcer David Cobb referred to Nashville with that nickname in 1950 on Red Foley’s NBC radio broadcast. DID YOU KNOW… The Hermitage Hotel which has hosted several political and entertainment figures including John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Al Capone since it opened its doors in 1910 is the only Five-Star, Five Diamond property in the state of Tennessee. DID YOU KNOW… The Union Station Hotel, a National Historic Landmark since 1977, was originally built in 1900 as the city’s railroad station. September/October 2013

ane Motor Museum is one of the best kept secrets in Nashville. Home to the largest collection of European cars in the United States, this museum exhibits an unusual mix of cars that includes prototypes, three-wheeled cars, propeller-driven cars, amphibious vehicles and many other automotive experiments not usually seen on the roads of Tennessee. On any given day there are typically 150 cars and about 30 motorcycles on display though their collection has grown to over 380 and the display is rotated frequently. An on-site shop works on restoration projects and maintenance as the museum works to keep the vast majority of their cars in running condition.
On Saturday, October 19, 2013 the museum will celebrate their 10th Anniversary by opening up to the public for a free day from 10am-5pm. Museum founder Jeff Lane will be on hand to demonstrate several museum vehicles and their will be giveaway items and activities for kids. More information about this and other museum events can be found online at www.lanemuseum.org.

here is only one Music City, and today Nashville continues its emergence as a cultural, artistic and entertainment-rich destination, filled with unique music, a myriad of art galleries, botanical gardens and greenways, historic homes, honkytonks and culinary delights. There’s a whole host of attractions that have made Music City famous. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, which includes over a million artifacts exploring country’s connections to blues, R&B and pop, will also feature the temporary exhibit, The Bakersfield Sound: Buck Owens, Merle Haggard and California Country opening in March 2012. Across the street stands the home of the Grammy-award winning Nashville Symphony, the dazzling $123 million Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Inspired by the greatest concert halls in the world, the 197,000-square-foot classically-

columned venue offers an unparalleled acoustical experience. Nashville has a pristine collection of antebellum estate mansions: Belle Meade, where a string of winning thoroughbreds was raised; The Hermitage, presidential home of Andrew Jackson; and Belmont Mansion, drenched in Victorian grandeur. Tour the beautifully-restored hilltop State Capitol building, then walk down to the Tennessee State Museum for an educational tour of the state’s history and culture. Dubbed the Athens of the South for its elegance, style and many academic institutions, Nashville claims a full-size replica of the Parthenon in Centennial Park, complete with the 42-ft high statue Athena, the tallest indoor sculpture in the western world. The Frist Center for the Visual Arts, an exquisitely converted Art Deco post office, hosts roving exhibitions changing every couple of months. The mansion at Cheekwood houses an extensive art gallery surrounded by 55 acres of divine gardens. What truly sets the city apart is the music. Music is the very heart of Nashville. Long recognized as the world’s capital of country music, Music City also boasts sounds of pop, rock, gospel, bluegrass, jazz, classical, contemporary Christian, blues and soul. Supported by rhythm tracks of culture and history, Nashville is uniquely and authentically “Music City.” In Nashville you can hear great music 24/7, 365 days a year. A great place to begin a tour is on Lower Broadway where honky tonks line the street. Here you’ll find evocative names like Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge and Robert’s Western World, and you never know who you might see (or hear), a current star or the next big thing.

You’ll catch star-dusted pickers and songwriters all over town, in places like bluegrass venue Station Inn, the rockin’ Exit/In, the honky tonkin’ bars on Broadway, the song-centered Bluebird Café or the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Of course, the ultimate country venue is the Grand Ole Opry House, where legends and current stars perform on the nation’s longest-running live radio program. Eating and drinking are high on the list of priorities. Nashville’s palate offers everything from Southen fare to haute cuisine with quite literally everything in between. Here, a perfect barbecue is as celebrated as the most spectacular creation from any of the city’s award-winning chefs. Whether it’s a family-friendly meal, dinner and a show or a romantic repast, the city’s restaurants serve every dish with a side of Southern hospitality. With its charming mix of musical, historical and cultural flavors, Nashville is truly a city for all seasons and styles. So whether it’s listening to live music, soaking in the art scene, exploring history or simply relaxing, you’ll find many ways to enjoy Music City and discover why music calls us home. A must see in Nashville
he Johnny Cash Museum features the largest collection of Johnny Cash memorabilia in the world. From The Man in Black’s earliest childhood artifacts to the very last song he wrote, you’ll find it here. Exhibits chronicle Johnny’s life and provide a very personal and unique glimpse into his world. Depicted in stunning graphics, artifacts and interactive technology, visitors are provided a three dimensional walk through the life and legend of this international icon. Our exhibits include Johnny’s stage costumes, instruments, personal letters, artwork and handwritten songs as well as artifacts from family members and notable friends. More than 25 costumes are on exhibit including the gown worn by First lady Patricia Nixon when Cash played the White House in 1971. Another highlight is the custom Gibson J200 guitar Johnny had made in 1958 which was on exhibit at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for seven years before moving to its present home here in Nashville. The instrument is valued at $250,000. Cash, who sold more than 100 million records, is one of the world’s best known and loved entertainers. His concert tours took him around the world and he is known in every corner of the globe. He has received virtually every award the entertainment world has to offer and is the only entertainer in history to be inducted into the Rock and Roll, Country Music, Songwriter’s and Gospel Music Halls of Fame. His Facebook page has over 10 million followers; more than most living entertainers. He posted over 130 hits on the Billboard Country singles chart, more than anyone in history, except George Jones. (Discounting duets by both men, Cash’s total exceeds Jones.) Cash placed at least two singles on the Country charts for 38 consecutive years, including an amazing 25 hits between 1958 and 1960.
