GetAway Sea Angling
Jimmy Andersson Thomas Søbirk For a few years Jimmy Andersson, owner and founder of Scandinavia’s largest fishing travel company Nordic Sea Angling, had been toying with the idea of following up the company’s success with Panama – by offering other worldwide fishing destinations to NSA’s clients. However, he soon realised that scouting and developing potential destinations and handling international bookings would require a lot of work and focus – and he and his staff at Nordic Sea Angling already had full time jobs.
Call us! Mon-Fri 9-17
Therefore, he approached Thomas Søbirk, owner and founder of GetAway Tours – Scandinavia’s leading travel company on worldwide destinations. Both companies had been founded around fifteen years ago and both had grown to market leaders within their field. Maybe it was now time to start working together? Well, it turned out it was. And that’s how GetAway Sea Angling was born. We hope you would like to join us on our future journey.

Tuna Coast
Panama SEASONS / FISH SPECIES The fishing along Panama’s Tuna Coast offers great variation: Strong currents change from week to week and you never know what awaits you in the huge area we cover. The Tuna Coast is known for it’s world record size rooster fish, which can grow to more than 100 lbs. The vicious cubera snapper is also high on the area’s most wanted list.
“If you appreciate hardcore popper fishing and speed jigging – this is for you!”
You can jig for lots of different species, including big amberjacks, groupers and all kinds of snappers, wear yourself out if you find yellowfin tuna or have fun with jack crevalle on lighter tackle. But for most clients these possibilities are merely welcome distractions between throwing poppers, both inshore and offshore, for big cuberas and even bigger roosters.
We fish the Tuna Coast all year, but most hosted trips are from early October until the end of June. Previously we skipped February as it was regarded a rather windy month, but the last few seasons saw great weather and fishing throughout the entire month of February, so we are changing our opinion on that matter.
WHAT WE THINK If you appreciate hardcore popper fishing and speed jigging for some really powerful fish – this is for you! Every week on the Tuna Coast seems to be different from the last, and that’s exactly what we love about the place; you never know what will happen on the water. Accommodation is great; clean, air conditioned rooms, a small swimming pool and nice meals – what more do you need to relax after a hard day’s fishing at sea? The lodge caters to a maximum of nine anglers so this is also a great place for going fishing with a handful of good friends.

Boca Chica
Panama
SEASONS / FISH SPECIES When you fish the Boca Chica area you must make a tough decision: What to fish for? The inshore fishing for roosterfish, cubera snapper, jacks and the many other challenging species is year round but during the winter months of January and February there are also great off shore possibilities for marlin and sailfish. On top of that, there are more dorados around than at any other time of the year. If you visit later in season, between April and July, the area is famous for it’s tuna fishery. The tuna fishing is peaking in May-June when huge schools of yellowfin tunas, ranging from manageable 50 pounders to rod (and man!) breaking 300 pounders, turn on during hectic feeding frenzies. The surface action can be unlike anything else you will ever encounter and depending on how the fish are feeding they can be caught on poppers, stickbaits, jigs or live bait.
“Boca Chica is simply the great big cocktail of everything good Panama has to offer”
With so many opportunities it’s a good thing that we fish long days – from 6.30 to 17.30 so we at least think that we can get it all done. Of course, we never quite will.
To target the many different species an inshore and an off shore fishery offers we employ most methods from the fully rigged boats; trolling for billfish, casting for tunas and inshore species, jigging and even live and deadbait fishing is adding to the fun.
WHAT WE THINK While the Tuna Coast – ironically – has a much less consistent tuna fishery than Boca Chica has in season, the Tuna Coast might be the right choice for hard core popper and jigging anglers. Boca Chica, on the other hand, offers greater variety and is in our opinion simply the great big cocktail of everything good Panama has to offer. Troll for marlin in the morning, pop for cubera snappers and roosters in the afternoon – now how cool is that? The boats at Boca Chica are in a class of their own and fully capable of making long runs to the famous fishing grounds of Hannibal Bank or Isla Montuosa. After a long day of fishing you need a cold beer, a dip in the pool and a cocktail or two followed by a good meal. Then you finish the day off with a goodnight drink before you crash in a clean, air conditioned room. It’s all there –and it’s all included in the package.

Panama - Boca Chica Combi THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
The comforts of a lodge or the freedom of a mothership? Yes, it’s a hard choice – and one we don’t necessarily want you to make. Instead, we offer you to join one of our brand new ”Best of both worlds-trips”: During the five full days of fishing you will spent one morning running all the way to Isla de Coiba or Isla Jicarón – one of the most productive fishing areas in all of Panama and close the equally famous Hannibal Bank. Out here you can fish until darkness – especially a hot biting period for big cuberas – since you don’t need to make it back to the lodge that day. Instead you will board a luxurious mothership already anchored in the area and spent the night. The next morning you will be fishing again at fish light, hitting the morning bite, at the very best fishing grounds. Mix all this with the stunning scenary around the islands and the chance of seeing whales, sea turtles, dolphins – or even saltwater crocodiles near Coiba – and you have a true adventure waiting for you!
Day 1: Flight to Panama City. Hotel accommodation. Day 2: Morning pick up and transfer to the lodge. Relax/rig up tackle in the afternoon. Day 3-7: Five full days of fishing. Two of those days will be around the remote – but famous – Jicaron/Jicarita Islands and Coiba Island. One night at the mothership when fishing the islands. Day 8: Transfer to Panama City and evening flight back to Europe. Arrival the next day.

Rompin
Malaysia A mix of warm currents, calm waters and an incredible amount of baitfish attracts thousands of sailfish to Kuala Rompin. There are those who claim that a sailfish was a rare sight in the area before the late nineties, when a strong El Niño episode pushed huge schools of sailfish into the area. Whether it’s true – and the big fish liked what they saw so much, they decided to stay – or whether nobody had discovered the sailfish fishery, we will never know. Never mind – what we do know, is that Rompin now offers what is quite likely the most reliable fishing for sailfish anywhere in the world. Luckily, the Malaysian government has realized that this unique fishery must be protected. The fishing is strictly catch & release. No doubt this is what makes it possible to catch incredible numbers of fish season after season. We would be the first to claim that fishing is more than a numbers game. Unless numbers says it all. That’s pretty much the case for Rompin, where a week’s fishing for our different groups (three boats) during our first two seasons has produced between 160 and 199 sailfish – landed! So, we have grown quite fond of saying; ”You do the math”.

The concentration of sailfish outside Rompin on Malaysia’s east coast is enormous – possibly without equal anywhere in the World today. Forget about trolling lures for hours on end with a few minutes of action now and then. In Malaysia we try to spot the fish before we start fishing – and the fishing itself is always from a drifting boat. This makes it possible to use lighter tackle and thereby getting the biggest possible thrill of fighting these fast and furious fish.
Sailfish can be caught in Malaysia from April until the end of October. Our hosted trips are in September and October where the fishing is at its best.
WHAT WE THINK
The sailfish can be caught by throwing poppers or fishing live baits. Usually, both methods are covered by the anglers on the boat. Fly fishing for the sails is also possible but still less practiced.
If you also think it sounds like pretty good fun catching several sailfish every single day – on light tackle and from a drifting boat – then Rompin is calling. We stay in simple but clean rooms with air conditioner and a private bathroom. There isn’t much to do after fishing but who has energy left to do much more than enjoying a good meal and a cold beer at the local restaurant/bar/fish head meeting point?
Although the dominant species by far is the sailfish quite often there is also good fishing for Spanish mackerel in good sizes and light tackle popping for queenfish and trevallies. Marlin, barracuda and cobia, amongst others, can also be caught but must be regarded as a bonus catch.
Rompin has nothing to offer non-anglers so let them stay at home – or meet them after your fishing trip when going back to Kuala Lumpur. The trip can easily be extended with one or several days in the capitol of Malaysia that offers plenty of sights worth seeing.
The Laccadive Islands When Yves Fraisseix, our good friend in India, was scouting for the right destination to start a new fishing operation, the Laccadive Islands was just one of several possibilities. Then he started to ask around about the necessary permits to run a fishing operation on the islands. Most reactions were like ”You can’t”, ”Don’t do it”, ”Too complicated” and ”Impossible” – and those were the more positive ones. In Yves’ own words, ”that’s when I knew I had found the right place!”
“...all things equal – the lesser fishing pressure the better fishing.”
We all know that – all things equal – the lesser fishing pressure, the better fishing. Here was a whole group of islands in the Indian Ocean that no one had ever fished! For Yves, all that was left was to make the impossible happen. He eventually did, and when all the red tape was finally cleared, and he got the permissions to bring foreign anglers to the Laccadives, it was just a matter of finding the right boats and someone to run them, right? Well, not really... We won’t go into detail about how the locals first thought, he was downright mad, when he returned fish (=food) to the sea – and as a consequence refused to take him out again. Or how six different Indian authorities each need to approve a ten page form for every client. The thing is, when you throw your popper toward a reef that has probably never been fished before – you don’t care about all the obstacles that had to be cleared on the way. Yves took care of that, anyway.

A True Adventure
SEASONS / FISH SPECIES
The season starts in November and runs until midApril. Fishing conditions and results may naturally vary during the season, but there is no reason to believe that certain periods are better than others. Realistic expectations travelling with us to the Laccadive Islands (Lakshadweep) are GTs from 10-40 kilo with the possibility of even bigger fish up to 50 kilo or more. Normally we also catch red snapper up to 8 kilo, grouper and on some trips numerous dog tooth tuna from 15-30 kilo. Furthermore there is always the chance of catching barracuda, shark, bluefin trevally and lots of other strong and exotic fish species. The joker of course being the incredible Napoleon fish. We normally catch several specimens on poppers throughout every week of the season. The biggest so far was 37 kilo!
WHAT WE THINK
Let us start by emphasizing two things: 1. The Laccadive Islands can be an incredible adventure! 2. The Laccadive Islands are not for everyone! If you possess a strong adventurous spirit, you will view any unforeseen change in the program as a challenge, and if spending a night (or two) on the deck of an open boat, sailing to or from virgin and remote fishing spots, doesn’t put you off the potential for awesome results is very real – in the shape of some of the best popper
fishing around. Plenty of strong GTs on a good day spiced up with exciting by-catches. Even large fish can usually be played without too great a risk of snagging on the bottom making it possible for less experienced popper anglers to join the fun. Speed jigging around the islands is still being explored, but the potential is there – especially for dog tooth tuna. In some places and on certain days popper fishing can be so good, it almost seems foolish to look for anything else. A trip to the Laccadive Islands can be demanding, but also completely unforgettable. If you prefer a more tightly knit fishing program with culinary delights, a cold beer and a good bed we do have other destinations that are much better suited. But if you would rather take the rough with the smooth and have an opportunity for a real popper fishing adventure, then a trip to the Lakkadive Islands is just about the safest lottery ticket you can get.
The Maldives
Popper fishing in the Maldives is not a new thing. We did it for the first time in 2008. Some did it before, and many more have done it since. Though we followed up with a couple of great group trips – and though we loved the place for its sheer beauty and the impressive variety of species – the destination never really caught on for us. Prices increased to a level that didn’t justify fishing from boats that were either limited in size, speed or both. Enter Shin Achiwa, a Japanese businessman. After having a long break from fishing he tried popper fishing a couple of years ago and got hooked right away. Later, on a vacation to the Maldives, he fished for a few days and fell in love with the place – and especially with its popper fishing!
“Shin realized after his first few trips that he had to solve the boating problem”
Being the kind of guy that doesn’t go for the second best, Shin realized after his first few trips that he had to solve the boating problem. Popping from one of the local dhonis wasn’t optimal. Within a month he had found a suited vessel: A 32 foot speedboat with 400HP. The next step was starting a sport fishing operation, so he could employ the talented young captain Mohamed full time and take popper fishing in the Maldives to a new level. And the following step – in February 2015 – was upgrading to a newly built 37 foot speedboat. At GetAway Sea Angling we are proud to be partners for Europe and we can now offer a variety of trips with this dedicated crew; from combined speedboat and dhoni live aboard expeditions to short three day trips for clients staying at resorts with their families. For the hard core popping enthusiast we offer longer tailor made trips to the atoll – and accommodation – of choice.

Popping in Paradise
SEASONS / FISH SPECIES
Though most people prefer to visit the islands while it is cold and dark back home, the Maldives offers fantastic fishing year round. And though giant trevally is the species you would most likely target on a trip to the Maldives, numerous bonus catches – red snapper, bluefin trevally and grouper, dog tooth tuna, napoleon fish, big barracudas and sharks – are also a great and most welcome part of this fishery. Popping along the reefs of the nearly 1,200 islands is usually so productive that most anglers don’t find much reason to use other methods. You might even consider leaving your short jigging rod and heavy jigs at home. We are fishing from a fast speedboat (2 x 200HP) that can motor fast between the islands as well as the fishing spots – and with an experienced crew with a better knowledge of these spots than anyone else.
WHAT WE THINK
The Maldives is a great choice if you want great popping for fish in the 5-40 kilo range in beautiful scenery. It is also the place where you can enjoy a tailor made trip with a few good friends, visiting the atolls that best suits your expectations. Maybe a ten day dream trip, maybe just a shorter five day trip or anything in between?

Accommodation can be a luxurious resort or a simple guest house – or you can stay on a mother ship and fish your way from islands to islands. In short, almost anything is possible. If you are new to popper fishing we highly recommend our ”Popper School” (see following page). MALDIVES POPPER SCHOOL
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD A DAY IN SCHOOL THAT YOU HOPED WOULD NEVER END?
If you are like most of us the answer is probably ”never”. You can change all that now. We are offering seven days in school – in a row – that we are pretty sure you would wish would never end! Now we are introducing a whole new concept. A ”Popper School”, made for those anglers who would like to try the addictive popper fishing for the very first time – or for those who would just like to learn new tricks from our tour leaders that are amongst the most experienced popper anglers in northern Europe. If you are about to learn from the best you should also learn with the best:
If necessary we will provide you with a top notch set of popper gear for your entire trip – at no extra cost! Our philosophy is simple: The more action on poppers, the faster you will get to grips with the fishing. Therefore, our school bench is a fast moving boat that will fish some of the most productive reefs in a true dream destination; the Maldives. Captain Mohamed is in a class of his own when it comes to popping in the Maldives. In short, the basis for learning as much as possible couldn’t be better. If you’re not convinced then take a look at the program for these trips – it includes seven full days of fishing.

Fraser River
ITINERARY
SEASONS / FISH SPECIES
The great white sturgeon is swimming the waters of the Fraser system throughout the year. We tend to do group trips from late summer (September) to early fall (November) and our guides are so skilled in finding these river monsters that the sturgeon fishing usually swings from good to very, very good. Latest news: Our guides have discovered where the biggest sturgeon group together during the winter months. The results have been truly mind blowing – and with less rain that November and mild temperatures we have a strong feeling that February and March will become the hottest months in the future.
Salmon run these rivers from August to October and can be caught on lighter tackle for those who need a break from the really big guys.
WHAT WE THINK
If you would like to catch a really big fish, probably bigger and even older than yourself, the best way to do so is fishing the Fraser with one of our guides. They are above the rest and will get you onto fish more often than anyone else. Fishing for sturgeon is big game fishing in freshwater – these fish can weigh several hundred kilos (more than 500 lbs). The sturgeon is a strong fighter and will do long runs up and down the river and even jump free of the water!
