TOWNSVILLE FASHION FESTIVAL

PROGRAM OF EVENTS Pages 5-6

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Since my involvement in this event some five years ago, I and the volunteer team at the Townsville Fashion Festival have knocked on many doors. Events such as the Fashion Festival, are borne out of desire for the community to do something that contributes to the fabric of our society. Events do not just appear, because we have a brain explosion. Events occur after thousands of hours of meetings, planning, writing, pounding the pavements and repeating a mantra about how events and in particular, The Townsville Fashion Festival is needed to support so many industries, and how they contribute to our economy. Each community does them, and each community both locally and regionally need to support them. The Townsville Fashion Festival is different to other similar named events, because it has two huge opportunities, they are passion and people.

Passion comes in the form of talent, whether it be creative or collaborative. It is the talent of our contributors that will be on show at the Townsville Fashion Festival. The difference also lies in the people who want to see the success of this event through the eyes of those who participate. Whether you are a designer, hairdresser, makeup artist, photographer, model, stylist, retailer, student or an avid event crew volunteer you are what the Fashion Festival is all about. This year we know we have done something very special. We have included new elements of the Fashion Festival in the form of arts, culture, entertainment and retailing from the JCU Makers Forum, a collaborative day that will bring the Mojo on in any maker to the Lexus Runway Gala Event, to shopping to you drop at the Townsville ON SALE there is seriously something for everyone.

MAKERS AND CREATORS FIND THEIR MOJO Townsville Fashions Festival, Townsville City Council and James Cook University are shining the spotlight on the collaborative focused “makers culture” of Townsville. The international renowned movement focuses on collaboration, innovation and asking the audience to disrupt their thought processes to ignite their minds. Fashion Festival committee member Nyree Bolton said “We are adopting a broad definition of makers and bringing together thinkers, creators, tinkerers, entrepreneurs and educators to exchange ideas, share information and examine the way forward”. President of Townsville Fashion Festival Madonna Simmons suggests that, “While the global makers movement stemmed from people reusing discarded or broken electronic or computer related materials it has grown far beyond that. You find them in academia or men’s sheds, in technical colleges or in home studios. Makers are

those that create and push the boundaries”. The event invites you to hear how internationally celebrated ‘makers’ have reached their success and attend workshops that allows you to contribute to the Townsville Makers Movement. Hear from international & national guest Chris Lau, Rachel Finch and Nathan Mayfield and local talents Warwick Powell and Con from King Social. The event will be held on Monday 23 May, visit townsvillefashionfestival.com.au & townsvilletickets.com.au to book your seat in a not to be missed educational event The Maker Forum, 23 May Tony Ireland Stadium

TOWNSVILLE ON SALE: SHOP TIL YOU DROP When we think of shopping we generally visualise in our mind what we need, and write a list. Boring! We are going to put that idea out the window and what I want you to do is when you think of shopping, think of the want. The feeling of shopping generally starts with the desire of knowing that you would look good in an outfit, or the feeling of trying on those comfortable shoes. Shopping is not a sin, it is a sensation of satisfying the want in the euphoria of pleasing ourselves, or pleasing a loved one that we are buying for. Shopping cannot be ignored, we all do it, and deep down most of us love it. Shopping is definitely a want as we want so many things, and we know we cannot have them all. However, we also need to think of shopping as a need. The need to support our essential cycle of retailing and purchasing. Whether it is a furniture store, a jewellery store, an electrical store or a women’s fashion store, from the design of the product, to the manufacturing, to the retailing, and then the enjoyment of wearing or using the product to fulfil our want, we support the food chain contributing to our economy. We need

FASHION ACROSS THE ARTS FOR STUDENTS Wearable Art & Photography (WAP) has been a collaboration between local schools for the past 4 years and has produced pieces that would not be out of place in the halls of the regional galleries of Australia.

Margaret Marys, Townsville Grammar and William Ross. Students from Years 10 to 12 have worked hard to contribute to this exhibition that covers a myriad of themes ranging from flora and fauna to magazine inspired creations.

Christina Papadimitriou, Photography Excellence teacher at Northern Beaches SHS and founder of WAP said:

Admirers can view their works in a multitude of ways, from the exhibition of the photography work at Castletown the week of the Fashion Festival event to the catwalk on the major night of the 28th May at the RSL Stadium. Months of planning have gone into the making of this collaborative parade and exhibition. In particular one of the artworks to be featured on the runway and exhibition will be by Victoria Alexion, who won the Apex Australia Teenage Fashion and Arts Youth Festival (AATFA) awards last year. Victoria will also be comparing at the AATFA awards on the Sunday 29th in Fashion of Flinders Street where the AAFTA’s will be held once more as a part of this year’s 2016. For more information go to www.townsvillefashionfestival.com.au

“I initially developed WAP to provide an opportunity for the photography students to practice their skills and exhibit their work in a professional context. What happened was a beautiful collaboration with other schools incorporating wearable art and photography. Wearable Art has now become part of the curriculum for many schools and is a great avenue for creative students to express themselves.” Townsville Fashion Festival May 23rd to 29th, will be the host of 13 wearable artworks from 6 local schools: Kirwan, Northern Beaches, Pimlico, St.

GROWING LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS TALENT The spirit of the Townsville Fashion Festival is to incubate and grow new and existing talent in all things fashionable. Whether it be through creative arts, design, pattern making, modelling, make-up artistry, hair dressing or photography. The event is a stepping stone for many who dare to take the next step. Matthew Gianoulis is that person. Having studied at James Cook University and mentored by those he cherishes most, his family and friends, he has developed into a talent that Townsville will find hard to keep the lid on. In fact he has recently been awarded a Silver in the 2016 AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) QLD State Awards. Matthew Gianoulis is a photographer and graphic designer who has a passion for high-end fashion and beauty portraiture. Over the last few years he has photographed for Mercedes-Benz and the Townsville Fashion Festival as well a number of fashion designers, models, hair stylists and make-up artists. He also loves to capture beauty in other forms including architecture, food

styling, and weddings and of course family, children and newborns. His work has been printed in a number of publications such as DUO Magazine, Flawless Magazine, Alchemist Magazine, New York’s Ellements Magazine and U on Sunday (Sunday Mail). A clean, bold, well-polished style has become the hallmark of Matthew’s fashion photography and he hopes his art develops the viewer’s appreciation for the many faces of beauty. He draws inspiration from all around, especially other creatives in the fashion/beauty industry with passion for their craft. Matthew brings his lens onto a polished format in the form of his first exhibition to be held at the Umbrella Studio in Townsville – ‘Beauty in the Making’. The exhibition opens on the 27th of May during the Townsville Fashion Festival. This is a photographic art exhibition focusing on fashion and beauty portraiture.
