At Dorrigo National Park, extraordinary plants and animals provide a living record of two hundred million years of evolution. BELLINGEN’S POPULAR RIVER FESTIVAL IS A CELEBRATION OF THE CONNECTION BETWEEN COMMUNITY AND WATER. FLOAT ON BY IN THE FIRST WEEKEND OF NOVEMBER.
One moment you’re leaving tracks in the sand and the next you’re winding along a rainforest track to a secret waterhole. Here water truly is the essence of life. Soak up some of Australia’s most serene waterways, get wet in the wild or just let it all flow by. The rivers and sheltered estuaries of the Coffs Coast offer a wide variety of fishing, picnic and paddling opportunities. Kayakers and canoeists travel from all over to explore these parts, but when you are on the water winding through mangroves and rainforest, you’ll feel like you are the first to discover it.

Be sure to explore the extensive wetlands boardwalk at Urunga. Explore Moonee Creek (accessed at Moonee Beach) and Boambee Creek in Bongil Bongil National Park (accessed from Bongil Picnic Area or Sawtell). The upper reaches of the beautiful Pine Creek adjacent to Bongil Bongil National Park are a paddler’s dream. A two-kilometre walk along the banks of Woolgoolga Creek leads through subtropical rainforest to a wild waterfall. Experience the charm of canoeing the Bellinger or the white knuckling white water of the Nymboida River. Take a one or two day tour of the challenging Grade 3 to 5 rapids at Platypus Flats.

Solitary PHOTO:PRECISION HELICOPTERS
The Solitary Islands Marine Park stretches over 75 km north from Muttonbird Island at Coffs and incorporates five islands, rock outcrops, reefs, beaches, rocky shores and estuaries. Over 550 species of reef fish have been observed within the sanctuary. It also supports a range of protected species such as the black cod, turtles, whales, shore birds and rare marine algae. The glistening white tower of the historic lighthouse on South Solitary is easily spotted from the coast and was once one of NSW’s most isolated manned beacons. Oh, and keep an eye out for migratory whales bursting up from below and dolphins cresting the waves - these splendid cetaceans and natural show-offs are what marine memories are made of.

The Coffs Coast overflows with gourmet delights. A mouthwatering abundance of locally sourced foods is complemented by inspiring dining locations. This region is fast becoming the north coast’s culinary capital. Stylish restaurants, chic cafés, exotic cuisines and classic pubs abound - and there’s always the option of stocking up on gourmet goodies at a local grower’s market and rolling out a rug by a river. Every type of produce imaginable thrives in this subtropical climate. Savour wild caught seafood fresh from the Pacific, plump oysters from river estuaries, beef raised on some of Australia’s richest alluvial pastures and the sun-ripened fruits of a subtropical paradise. You've never tasted bananas, mangoes, avocados or macadamias like these.

In the sunny climes of the Coffs Coast, outdoor dining is a year-round pursuit. Try the shaded tables at the cafés cosied up French style near the river in Bellingen’s Church Street or the rows of restaurants along Coffs Creek and at the Jetty Precinct. The pubs are great too – Dorrigo’s Heritage Hotel Motel is a perfectly preserved shrine to country hospitality, where even the counter lunches in the nostalgic dining room are at historic prices! Local sports, services and recreational clubs are also excellent for a meal out that won’t break the bank.

Splendour on the Beach
Set amidst a thoroughly unspoiled band of green, gold and blue is one of NSW’s premier holiday destinations. The region surrounding Coffs Harbour is the traditional home of the Gumbaynggirr Nation, who thrived on the bounty of these superb subtropical marine, river and mountain environs. The city is named for boatbuilder John Korff, who took refuge from a gale here in 1847 and gave rise to the founding of a port. Banana growing, celebrated by the iconic Big Banana, has been a feature of the region since the late 19th century. For over ninety years, people have been coming to Coffs Harbour to enjoy its natural delights.
Pleasures And Treasures This friendly and relaxed city on the surf looks out over the islands and reefs of the precious and world-renowned Solitary Islands Marine Park. An irresistible range of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences complements Coffs’ popular yet uncrowded beaches. Located between sparkling ocean and verdant ranges, this is the perfect base from which to explore the delights of the Coffs Coast.

Just five kilometres from Coffs Harbour, the Forest Sky Pier offers a jaw-dropping panoramic view from mountains to the Pacific coast. The Pier juts 21 metres out from Sealy Lookout and rises 15 metres above the forest floor.
WHY SHOULD THE BIRDS HAVE ALL THE FUN?
The Forest Sky Pier is located within Bruxner Park Flora Reserve. To get there, head north from Coffs on the Pacific Highway, turn left on to Bruxner Park Road (just north of the Big Banana) then left again at the ridge top onto Scenic Drive. Parking, picnic tables and toilets are available and the Sky Pier is open from 8.00 am to dusk.

Walk On
Take a stroll along the Jetty foreshore and Marina with its bobbing fishing boats and glorious harbour views – or take a cruise and see it all from the blue.
At the eastern end of the breakwall is Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve, where thousands of migratory shearwaters nest every year after winging in from the Philippines. The short walking track to the island’s peak commences at the award-winning Giidany Mirlarl Outdoor Education Space and offers panoramic views across Coffs Harbour. This is a place of high significance to the local Gumbaynggirr people and a fascinating Aboriginal Discovery program is offered by local National Parks rangers. Protecting the wonders of the ocean beyond, Solitary Islands Marine Park is one of Australia’s most famous underwater diving and photography locations. The waters here are home to the world’s biggest colony of anemones and clown fish (think "Finding Nemo"). There are also sharks, giant squid, sea turtles and manta rays. Learn to dive and go down to see for yourself. If all that sea air is making you hungry, there’s a huge range of multicultural dining choices along the breakwall and in the Jetty precinct.

SOUTH SOLITARY, VISIBLE FROM THE BREAKWALL, IS ONE OF ONLY TWO LIGHTHOUSE ISLANDS IN NSW. ITS ORIGINAL LANTERN BURNT CONTINUOUSLY FOR 95 YEARS UNTIL THE LAST RESIDENT KEEPER LEFT THE ISLAND IN 1975. THE SURROUNDING REEFS AND WATERS ARE HOME TO A VAST COLONY OF CLOWN FISH

Find it all by foot or cycle. Commencing at the Botanic Gardens, follow the boardwalk along Coffs Creek, and continue down to the harbour and Coffs Jetty. There’s a marina full of whale watching, cruise and charter boats waiting for you to board. Coffs is surrounded by some of NSW’s best beaches. It's Famous
THE BIG TURNING POINT CAME IN THE LATE ‘70S WHEN ‘ALTERNATIVE LIFESTYLERS’ BEGAN ARRIVING HERE. ARTISTS AND ARTISANS TOOK THEIR INSPIRATION FROM THE REGION AND BROUGHT THEIR OWN VISION TO IT. With over 250 stalls, the sprawling Bellingen Community Market is among Australia’s biggest. Held on the third Saturday of each month, stalls include locally produced foods, not-so-shabby chic clothing, arts, craft, plants, pre-loved treasures and new age oddities, all accompanied by live music. Haggle for a bargain or watch the passing parade. Live music of every description (both locally made and touring performers) is regularly on offer at the town’s many and varied venues.

C-Change Adventures offers kayak hire from Boambee Creek reserve and also runs a range of exciting tours. Boambee and Bonville (Sawtell) Headlands are ideal for spotting migratory whales as they cruise by on their marathon trek (May to November) and are easily accessible by foot and vehicle. At the southern end of Sawtell Beach is Sailors Bay, an area sheltered by a small island that can be reached at low tide. There is also a boat-launching ramp and tidal rock pools. On the south side of the

headland is Sawtell Memorial Rock Pool, providing the perfect protected location to cool off with a view. Immerse yourself in nature with a walk or mountain bike ride along the well marked trails of Bongil Bongil National Park, an easy walk from Sawtell’s main street and adjacent to the ideally situated Sawtell Beach Holiday Park. The Park offers direct beach track access and the neighbouring aquatic centre, bowling, golf and tennis clubs make it a great holiday base for rest and recreation. The surrounding bushland is also home to a large range of native creatures.

Urunga, Mylestom and Repton
GET OUT WHILE THE SUN IS YOUNG FOR A STROLL ALONG THE BOARDWALK
This is classic beach vacation territory – without the crowds. The name Urunga derives from ‘Urungoo’ – a local Gumbaynggirr word meaning ‘a long spit of sand’ (perfect for long summer days!) Just off the Pacific Highway, the relaxed villages of Urunga, Mylestom and Repton bring ocean and freshwater recreation within walking distance. This is where the rivers meet the sea - locals will happily let you in on the secrets of the best places to fish, surf, watch the sun set or dolphins and whales cruise by. Urunga opens out onto a tidal inlet complete with sandy shores and a magnificent kilometre-long wetlands boardwalk. Beyond is a staggering sweep of surf as Hungry Head beach reaches south (patrolled in holiday season).

Wonderful
"BUSTER", A SHIP WRECKED IN 1893 PUTS IN A RARE APPEARANCE AT WOOLGOOLGA
Woolgoolga’s nostalgic holiday atmosphere inspires sauntering in the shallows at sunset, endless games of beach cricket and big barbecues with family and friends. This is truly a leisure destination – what it lacks in theme parks and expensive resorts, Woolgoolga makes up for in a wealth of nature-based activities that won’t hurt your pocket. Swimming, surfing, kayaking, mountain biking, horse riding and bushwalking are perennial favourites in a place that is naturally blessed.

In Woopi Life There is more to Woopi (as the locals call it) than meets the eye. It also offers a fascinating fusion of cultures that becomes apparent from the moment you spy the white domes of the Sikh temple at the highway turnoff. For many years, Punjabi community members have brought the spice of Indian life to this Aussie beach town, flavouring local restaurants and culminating in the irresistible and hugely popular Curryfest each March. More intrigue lies beyond. A flightless helicopter near the RSL on Turon Parade marks the entrance to the Woolgoolga Art Gallery, showcasing the works of regional artists.
WAITING FOR THE WHALES
Walk up to the impressive headland, where sweeping views across ocean and coast provide one of the premier whale watching spots in NSW. Mid year is renowned as peak hour for migratory traffic, but keep your camera (or binoculars) handy as there’s a good chance of sighting whales breaching and blowing any time between May and November.
Woolgoolga Arts & Crafts Gallery Varied
and unique display of arts and crafts from local artists showcasing the vast talent in the region. On display pieces include paintings and watercolours, wooden sculptures, pottery, jewellery and fibre craft.
Like many places that lie unmarked on the average tourist map, Woopi offers a laid-back holiday experience laced with hidden pleasures.

ALL OF THESE UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEYS START FROM THE VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE IN ELIZABETH STREET, COFFS HARBOUR. From ocean to mountains, rivers to rainforest, it’s amazing what you can experience in a single day around the Coffs Coast and its beautiful hinterland.
Bellingen – A Town for All Tastes Drive south on the Pacific Highway, take the Waterfall Way exit and head to Bellingen. Build up an appetite canoeing on the Bellinger River, satisfy it at one of the many cosmopolitan cafés and wile away the afternoon devouring the hippy meets high class delights of the local shops and galleries.
and flora on one of the ample walking trails. A timber suspension bridge at Crystal Falls leads to a track directly behind the tumbling waters. More watery wonders await at Dorrigo - turn right up the main street and just a little way beyond town you will find the impressive Dangar Falls and a trail winding down to the river below.
Just on the edge of town, a bevy of boutiques clustered around a charming rustic courtyard at the Old Butter Factory showcase the work of the region’s artists and artisans. On the way back, detour to Raleigh Winery (off Old Pacific Highway) to sample locally grown pleasures of the vine.
Dorrigo – Waterfalls and Wilderness Head west through Bellingen and follow the iconic Waterfall Way up the rainforest-clad escarpment, with its roadside cascades and exhilarating views back across the valley. Before you reach the plateau town of Dorrigo, turn right to Dorrigo National Park and Rainforest Centre. Discover the global significance of the World Heritage listed Gondwana rainforest, walk out across the treetops on the spectacular Skywalk and see unique birds, fauna

DANGAR FALLS, DORRIGO
Woolgoolga – Wonders of Woopi Beyond Coffs Harbour, the inviting ocean villages and sands of Sapphire, Emerald, Moonee and Sandy Beach lead north to Woolgoolga (known as Woopi to the locals). Near Moonee Beach, take a stroll along Serenity Bay and over Look At Me Now headland to see kangaroos in their natural habitat. You can’t miss the turnoff to Woopi, at which stands one of the coast’s most striking landmarks - the towering
white façade and minarets of the Guru Nanak Sikh Temple. The town is renowned for its Punjabi culture and you can get a taste at the delectable annual Curryfest. Continue through town to the headland, a favourite whale watching spot between May and November. A little further north is spectacular Arrawarra headland, with its rockpools, beaches and views over Solitary Islands Marine Park. Head inland from Woolgoolga to visit the subtropical rainforest and sandstone ranges of Sherwood Nature Reserve (pack a picnic).
Bonville – Butterflies and Bunkers Venture south on the Pacific Highway and take the Tourist Drive 18 exit to Bonville. Stop in to witness the wonders of metamorphosis and savour a Devonshire Tea at the Butterfly House on Strouds Rd. Even if you aren’t a golfer, Bonville Golf Resort’s acclaimed course (voted the Australian mainland’s most beautiful for 12 successive years) is a fabulous place to pause for coffee or dine at the ‘chefs hatted’ Flooded Gums restaurant. Back on the highway, turn left at Lindsays Rd and travel to Wood We Create Gallery where resident artist David Barden creates nature-inspired pieces from local and Australian timbers.
Sawtell – Sun, Surf and Style Travel south down the Pacific Highway, take the Lyons Road off-ramp and follow the road until you come upon the stylish seaside village of Sawtell. Follow the signs up to Sawtell Headland, a panoramic lookout from where you can scan the waves for whales and dolphins. Cool off with a swim with a view in the adjacent Sawtell Memorial Rock Pool or sink into the expansive sands of Sawtell Beach. The town’s leafy main strip boasts a browse-worthy collection of specialty shops and boutiques. Afterward settle in for lunch at one of the award-winning restaurants and cafés under the shade of giant fig trees.
Repton/Mylestom – River and Rainforest R ‘n R Continuing south, take the Pacific Highway to the Repton/Mylestom exit. Drive through Repton toward the beach and follow the dirt road through Bongil Bongil National Park, stopping off for a soul-reviving stroll on the one kilometre littoral rainforest walk (1km). Get the sand between your toes by walking behind the dunes to the point and back along the beach. Just south of Repton is the popular fishing, water-skiing and holiday hamlet of Mylestom. Take a dip in the safety netted pool on the Bellinger River or hit the surf – they’re only a few hundred metres apart on this narrow sandy peninsular. There’s also a well-stocked local store for refreshments and plenty of shaded grass for a picnic with glorious river views.
Urunga – Rivers Meet the Sea A few kilometres further south along the Pacific Highway is the vilage of Urunga with its calm river lido and fascinating wetlands boardwalk. As you head across the bridge over the Kalang River, Anchors Wharf Café rests on the south bank below. Stop in at the Visitor Information Centre on your right and follow the road around to discover the town nestled along the inlet where river and ocean converge. Stretching nearly a kilometre from riverbank to surf beach, the wetlands boardwalk offers plenty of surprises from bustling crowds of blue-shelled crabs to myriad species of wetland birds.
