A Career with Purpose

After founding not-for-profit Friends with Dignity in 2015, Zoe Scharenguivel’s career has moved from strength to strength with her new venture, Events for Purpose. Now, Zoe sits down with Get It Magazine’s Holly Bartter to talk about important causes, creating change in the community and finding inspiration everywhere.

For Zoe Scharenguivel, launching Events for Purpose meant bringing together her unique skill set to empower important charity organisations that didn’t have the platform or support they deserved. “Our focus is to assist smaller charities, not-for-profits and community groups with implementing fundraising initiatives, income generation and strategies to raise awareness of their causes within the community and help them continue with their social impact,” explains Zoe. “So often, these smaller NFPs had the passion but were quite often underresourced and time poor.” Her first step into the charity space was in 2015 with Friends with Dignity, a “grass roots NFP” as Zoe describes, which supports victims of domestic violence and experienced fast growth and the prestigious title of Australian Charity of the Year in 2018. “My background is actually in the Tourism and Leisure Industry,” Zoe shares, “and I was able to use my generalist skills and experience when we founded Friends with Dignity.” This growth mindset, operational acumen and ability to connect with others was fueled by the passing of a close friend due to domestic violence, and since Friends with Dignity, Zoe has further honed her talents to welcome a series of new fundraising causes, starting with the Makin Family Fundraiser, for Events for Purpose. “I have personally known the Makin Family for a few years now,” Zoe says, “and was shocked and upset when I heard about Shane Makin’s sudden brain tumour diagnosis. “To learn they had to leave their children behind on the GC to seek lifesaving treatment in Sydney, and then to not be able to return home for rehabilitation and further treatment due to COVID restrictions was heartbreaking. The goal for our first event was to help a beautiful family who were going through some significant life challenges.” In this field of work and balancing a demanding career with being a mother, Zoe recognises how essential it is to strike a balance between giving to others and filling up her own cup. “I often remind myself that I’m unable to change the world, however, by contributing my small part, I can make a difference to so many people one day at a time. Things have become easier for me now that my children are a little older, and my husband returned from working overseas last year.

“I take such inspiration from those who have overcome their own challenges to make the world a better place, or use their influence to unite change and humanitarian impact. My beautiful Mum has always been an inspiration and has set the bar very high for me to aspire to be the best I can be and simply, a good human!” With local outreach essential to the success of Events for Purpose, Zoe shares that the Gold Coast provides a base of people who all want to make a difference where they can. “The GC community is very generous and supportive of each other - the gift of your time is priceless and really does have an impact on others.” As for the future? Zoe has a clear vision for herself and her work: “I want to continue to help as many community organisations and NFPs with their growth and expansion, which allows them to continue to do their own amazing work in the community and helping so many more people.” As our time together closes out, it’s crystal clear that this pay-it-forward mentality underpins Zoe’s success, passion and drive to make things happen.

Protect your child from DROWNING

Summer is fast approaching. Unfortunately, so is ‘drowning season’

According to Royal Life Saving, lockdowns and prolonged periods of stay at home due to Covid has drowning facilities skyrocketing. Drowning rates for the 0-4 age bracket have increased 108 per cent in 2021. This result is devastating. There are steps we can all do in preparation for the silly season and achieve ‘zero’ unnecessary drownings, that devastate families.

✔️ Complete a Pool Safety Checklist - Check your pool gate and fences, latches and locks are all compliant and safe.

✔️ Don’t EVER ‘prop’ pool gates open! Make sure of this if your child goes on play dates at homes that have pools! ✔️ Do YOU hold your CPR? Make sure all parents, carers and older children in the household hold their CPR. multiple locations across the Coast!

CPR is a lifesaving skill. ✔️ All Australian babies, toddlers and young children should be attending structured, progressive swimming classes -

Make sure your children can all back float and tread water independently.

Until they can perform these skills

INDEPENDENTLY they are not strong swimmers.

Additionally - ✔️ Don’t ever leave children in the bath alone or with other children - even to answer the phone. Always supervise! ✔️ Don’t leave pool toys in, or around pool areas - small children will climb and scale over pool fences in any way possible, especially if toys are attracting their attention.

✔️ Kids are still at risk in portable pools!

Constantly watch children swimming in portable pools and then empty as soon as they are finished their swim. ✔️ Don’t involve adults drinking alcohol while children are swimming - ALWAYS make sure there is a ‘Responsible Adult’ in charge of supervision while kids are swimming. Avoid alcohol when around the water!

✔️ Always wear lifejackets when on the water while kayaking, in canoes, jet skiing, boat trips, when in rivers, lakes, dams, the ocean and seas.

✔️ Avoid boating or swimming alone.

STAY SAFE! AND HAVE FUN ON THE WATER THIS SUMMER!

Beating

back pain

Working from home has its perks - relaxed dress code and the ability to facemask while you send emails. However, it does have its shortcomings. After months and months of switching between the dining table, your bed, the sofa and maybe even your floor to set-up shop for the day, only to wonder eight hours later why your lower back aches and the onset of body stiffness is strong.

But according to X50 Lifestyle Dietitian and Performance Nutritionist Tara Kaff, there are some things you can do to reduce the severity of the pain. Here are her top tips.

Get Physical

Being sedentary allows the muscles around the spine and in the back to become weak, which in turn can cause less support for the spine and lead to long-term pain. At the most basic level, physical activity means standing, walking and limiting lying down throughout the day. To take it to the next level, try incorporating a brisk walk or light jogging. Strength training is also helpful as it targets the core and hips while strengthening your lower back, helping you better manage any pain.

Cold and Heat Therapy

You may have heard that one is better than the other - but the short answer is that the best option is whichever works for you. Applying cold and/or heat packs are both an effective strategy for pain reduction - cold therapy helps to reduce inflammation and pain, whereas heat therapy helps improve blood flow, relaxation and pain relief. If you’re lucky enough to have a bathtub, try soaking in Epsom salts for about 20 minutes, which can help ease sore muscles.

Supplement Wisely

When it comes to what may help with alleviating pain - magnesium is essential for proper muscle function and acts to relieve tight, sore and cramped muscles. Proper intake of magnesium supplements also helps to calm and relax the entire nervous system and improves sleeping habits. Vitamin D improves the body’s absorption of calcium and maintains bone health; which is why experts believe that a lack of vitamin D could make back pain worse.

Anti-Inflammatory Tea

When you consume anti-inflammatory food and drinks regularly, over a period of time the potent agents within the antioxidants can play a significant role in reducing and/ or eliminating inflammatory reactions in the body.

Get Enough Restorative Sleep

Research shows that sleep disturbances can make pain worse while lack of sleep can also affect how much pain a person can tolerate. Most adults should be getting around seven to nine hours of sleep a night.

Stress Less

Stress can trigger muscle tension and painful spasms, so try scheduling in some stress-relief techniques and activities to your day. Such as mindfulness meditation and deep breathing - which both calm the body’s stress response. Yoga is also great as it focuses on particular poses and breathing to help with relaxation, especially when practiced regularly.

Osteoporosis is considered to be a preventable disease, and reducing the risk of osteoporosis, particularly for the over 60s, is likely to prevent many fractures, which carry high morbidity and mortality rates. From their mid-thirties, women begin to lose bone density. After age 60, 1 in 2 Australian women will have a fracture related to osteoporosis. Osteoporosis occurs in all age groups, genders, and races; however it is more common in Caucasians and postmenopausal women; affecting 1 in 4 women aged over 75. Many people don’t know they have osteoporosis or ‘weak bones’ until they suffer a fracture. According to recent statistics released by the International Osteoporosis Foundation, one in three women around the world over the age of 50, and one in five men will experience osteoporotic fractures in their lifetime. Low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue leads to an increase of fragile bones that are prone to fracture with minimal trauma, for example, falling from standing height onto the ground. The wrist, spinal vertebrae and hip, are most frequently fractured osteoporotic bones. Increasing age, low BMI, smoking, family history and certain medications can increase the risk of osteoporosis. Other risk factors include: Other risk factors include: • inadequate amounts of dietary calcium • low vitamin D levels • cigarette smoking • alcohol intake of more than two standard drinks per day • caffeine intake of more than three cups of coffee or equivalent per day • lack of physical activity • early menopause • loss of menstrual period if if associated with reduced production of oestrogenlong-

BuildingSTRONG BONES Screening usually starts from 70 years of age, although screening is often done earlier for women at risk who have certain medical conditions, take various medications or have a strong family history of osteoporosis. There are some things you can do to prevent Osteoporisis, regardless of your gender. Those include: From a young age, both men and women can take steps to prevent osteoporosis by making sure that they: • have a healthy and varied diet with plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables and whole grains • eat calcium-rich foods • dbsorb plenty of vitamin D • don’t smoke • limit alcohol and caffein • Exercise regularly Your doctor can guide you on the importance of calcium and vitamin D supplementation, measures to prevent bone loss, maintain bone strength and preventing falls.

Maintain Maintain

your health this party season!

Melbourne Cup usually signifies the beginning of the party season. Gatherings, work functions and Christmas can mean this two-month period can be filled with temptation. But, with a bit of forward planning we can overcome the party period still on track to keep our health and fitness in order. Below are a few tips to help you not only survive, but thrive!

1. Plan ahead

The key during the holiday season is to plan ahead. Detailed grocery lists for all of your meals and stocking up on healthy snack items that you can put together quickly to serve to guests or enjoy with your family are key. Meal prep is a great way to ensure you always have a supply of healthy options on hand. If you’re travelling, research restaurant menus in the area so you will have a list of good options to try before you arrive.

2. Keep moving

Maintaining your normal routine as much as possible will help you stay on track. Don’t leave your fitness to chance! Schedule times throughout your holiday to be active. Find out where the nearest gym is and either work out independently or join a class or get the whole family involved by planning activities you can do together like cycling, swimming or walking.

3. Don’t forget to eat

Regular meals throughout the day help regulate your insulin levels and keep food cravings at bay. Eating five or six meals a day will stimulate your metabolism into burning the equivalent amount of energy as 30 minutes of cardio!!! Try a proteinbased breakfast (check out Vision’s meals on Vision Virtual Training for some recipe ideas) to keep you on track. Have a proteinbased snack before going out for dinner so you don’t arrive hungry and won’t be as tempted to over-indulge.

4. Stay hydrated

Drink water to help you feel fuller and keep your body functioning well. Have a glass of water before heading out for a meal and if you are consuming alcohol, drink a glass of water between each drink. Keep your water intake up throughout the day so you don’t end up gulping down a glass or two before bed and disrupting your sleep by having to make trips to the bathroom at night.

5. Watch your alcohol consumption

It’s the time of year to be ‘merry’ but calories from alcoholic beverages, especially mixed cocktails filled with liqueurs, fruit juices, and syrups add up quickly. Try to keep to ‘single ingredient drinks’ like wine or beverages that use a water-based mix. Every glass of red wine you drink takes approximately 21 minutes of walking to burn off the calories!

6. Get some sleep

Sleep is so important to our overall health and research shows that we turn to sweets and carbs when we are over-tired. 6-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night will do wonders for your metabolism and will ensure you have the energy you need.

7. Think before you eat

Sometimes we eat because we are tired, thirsty, bored or stressed. Take a moment before indulging that sweet tooth and determine whether you really are hungry and act accordingly. Think of cravings as a suggestion, not an order, and you have the final say!

10. Keep temptation away

If you are staying home over the holidays why not take advantage and avoid purchasing unhealthy snack foods and sweets. Having them in the house, even if you aren’t intending on eating them, means that you have to rely on willpower in moments of temptation.

11. Indulge selectively

Rather than eating store-bought items, plan to selectively indulge in your favourite homemade holiday treats. It is too hard to deprive yourself completely over the holidays. By giving yourself permission to enjoy one or two special items, you will be able to maintain your will-power, enjoy them without feeling guilty and get back on track quicker.

12. Focus on fun, friends and family - not food

We know that for most of us the holidays are centred on special eating traditions, however, we hope you also remember to take time to reconnect with your lovedones and with yourself to ensure that your holidays are filled with happiness and joy!
