Have you ever wondered how all of this began? How Jeep Invasion came to be? Have you ever met someone and they’re not what they first seemed?

All of that rings true for Kevin Carlson and Justin Murray.

if you saw them walking around Jeep Invasion, they look like any other event goers or vendors. In reality, they’ve spent the last 365 days-minus a fewputting their blood and sweat into this show.

It all started about 12 years ago when Kevin and Justin -two very different men-met through a Jeep Club meet. However, the event you’re at today did not grow this big or become such a success overnight.Through many years of blood, sweat and a few tears, the Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion is now bringing in more than 50,000 people from around the country every year.

Some people have deep rooted ties to their love for Jeeps-childhood memories, youthful summers riding through the mountains. Although that’s not the case for Kevin Carlson, it is the case for Justin Murray. If you think about your fondest memories, oftentimes you are transported to a specific time, place or thing. For Justin, it’s the Jeep his Grandpa had when he was only five years old. After riding through McMinnville alongside his grandfather, Justin was hooked. His first car was a Jeep, some of his favorite memories involve Jeeps, and now he’s help turn the love for a car into a fulfilling career.

For Kevin, his Jeep origin story is very different.

You know the saying “behind every successful man is a better woman who got him there?” for Kevin, it’s true. Without his wife, he wouldn’t even own a Jeep, let alone spend every day of his life doing this.

Hallows Part 2 was the most popular movie of the year and Sunday Night Football was the most popular TV show, gas prices averaged in the high $3 range, and Kevin’s wife dragged him to a car lot to look at a Jeep, which he swore he would never, ever own. Something miraculous happened as they walked through the lot, a Jeep Wrangler caught Kevin’s eye.

Shortly after purchasing their first Jeep together, Kevin’s wife was scrolling through social media when she found a local club hosting a community Jeep ride, and she told Kevin they were going. That first ride was anything but smooth. Although he worried about messing up their Wrangler, Kevin and his wife continued going to local meets and rides.

Let’s take it back a few years.

You guessed it! That’s where Kevin met Justin.

Typically this is the part of the story where the person writing it would say, “And the rest was history.” However, that doesn’t give these two guys nearly enough credit.

When they started discussing the meet, that would eventually become Jeep Invasion, Justin was a bit more apprehensive than Kevin. It was Kevin’s idea originally (Yes, Justin did give him the credit). It wasn’t until they began the work and saw how much the Jeep Community needed this event, that passion and success began pouring out of both of them. From then on, Kevin was hooked.

The first Jeep Invasion took place in Townsend and the second in The Island in Pigeon Forge’s parking lot. Every year they see more and more people attend. In 2015, when they secured the Leconte Center in Pigeon Forge, Kevin said it felt like the biggest place in the world. From parking lots to a 232,000-square-foot event center, that’s when everything began to shift.

If you’ve never seen something go slightly wrong during Jeep Invasion, it’s because Kevin already fixed it. He doesn’t feel the need to check in on all the front-of-house tasks or how the event is going; he already knows it’s epic every year.

It fully flopped. The reason why is still a slight mystery. Why, then, is Jeep Invasion such a success every year?

Since the beginning, Kevin and Justin turned a hobby into a full-time career working all but 30ish days a year. They’ve grown Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion to having six employees, an online merch store, over 50,000 attendees every year and too many loyal vendors to name.

These two are the definition of hard work pays off. They created a Jeep Mecca in East Tennessee. Just don’t ask them about the ducks.

If you’ve never seen Kevin walking around during Jeep Invasion weekend, it’s likely because he’s busting his butt behind the curtains to make sure everything goes smoothly. He’s responsible for fixing anything that is broken, or becomes broken. He

While Kevin is working behind the scenes, Justin is in the winner’s circle. Literally. There is no chance you’ve missed him at Jeep Invasion, even if you didn’t know what he looks like, because he is constantly talking and checking in with everyone. Justin is in charge of Business Relations. He takes care of every person walking through the doors, making sure everyone has a great experience. Whether it’s your first time at a Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion show or you’ve been a vendor since the beginning, Justin is there acting out his favorite part of the event: comradery, community.

The Smoky Mountain Jeep Club is a family-oriented factory open top Jeep enthusiasts club designed for those who enjoy Jeeping adventures and social activities in a safe, casual environment. The Co-Founders, Justin Murray and Kevin Carlson had a vision of developing a Jeep Club that would bring Jeep enthusiasts together and be enjoyed by all. Since 2010, the SMJC has grown to one of the largest Jeep Clubs in Tennessee.

Led by President Shawn Worley, the SMJC hosts monthly group trail rides and social events. Club events are conducted in a well organized and safe environment thanks to dedicated

Merchandising by Charlene Carlson, the administrative and social media team consists of Kim, Laura, and Danielle who manage registration, monthly newsletters, event photos and videos. With the vision of the Founders, over the years, the Club has raised over $100,000 in fundraising events for several local charities. The morning after the 11th Anniversary Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion Event, The Smoky Mountain Jeep Club will host a special ride called “JEEPS INVADE THE COVE”. The Cades Cove Loop Trail is the most popular scenic drive in all of the GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS, so you don’t want to miss it! We will meet at 10:00am on August 27th at the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center 123 Cromwell Dr, Townsend, TN 37882 and leave at 11am.The scenic driving tour through the Cades Cove Loop takes approximately two to four hours depending on tra c. Because it’s a single-lane road, be prepared to stop frequently—the slow pace makes it easy to enjoy the amazing mountain landscapes, wild ower meadows and diverse wildlife. Halfway through the Loop, you can make stop at the Visitors Center where photo opportunities are ample and restrooms are available. The water-powered mill near the Visitor Center is a must-see, as well. There is no rush through the loop and you can break away from the convoy at anytime to stop and picnic or check out the old cabins and churches.

If you're the kind of person who spends weekends in the great outdoors—or perhaps you just want to look like you do—the 2024 Jeep Wrangler is an SUV that will take you just about anywhere you want to go. Jeep has come a long way from its military roots and offers plenty of creature comforts, and in fact, higher-end trims could be called luxurious. Now, that doesn't necessarily mean the Wrangler will treat you to a pillowy ride or massage your backside on your way to the trailhead. It's still a truckish thing, with road manners to match. Its ride can be jarring over broken pavement and its steering needs constant correction just to keep it heading in a straight line. By all accounts, Jeep offers many more powertrain options than its rivals, including a plug-in hybrid variant and a 470-hp V-8 that's exclusive to the Rubicon 392 model.

What’s New for 2024?

The Wrangler picks up a mild visual and tech update for 2024, with an updated grille and no fewer than 10 new wheel designs. Inside, a new 12.3-inch infotainment display is standard across the board and replaces the smaller 5.0- and 7.0-inch screens from last year’s Wranglers. The new display also features Jeep’s latest infotainment software,

as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The onboard navigation system includes mapping for over 2000 trails, with the ability to download even more.

Jeep has integrated a more robust active noise-cancellation feature to help quiet the cabin for phone calls. The plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain can now be had on Sport and Rubicon X trims; hybrid models also gain a 3.6-kilowatt auxiliary battery to run accessories.

We like the idea of staying close to the Wrangler’s simple roots while keeping the price toward the low end of the range, so we’d start with the two-door Wrangler— which comes standard with a removable cloth top. We don’t want to go full World War II bare bones, so we’d opt for the Willys trim for its extra equipment, which includes 17-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, LED exterior lighting, and built-in auxiliary switches so you can mount your own accessories such as a winch or a light bar. Beyond that, we’d spec the 270-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-

cylinder for its 295 pound-feet of torque—35 pound-feet more than the standard V-6. The four-cylinder also comes standard with an eight-speed automatic, a powertrain combination that should make for low-stress trail driving.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Wrangler can be had with one of five different powertrains, starting with a 285hp 3.6-liter V-6 that can be paired with a sixspeed manual gearbox or a smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic. A turbocharged fourcylinder engine is optional and teams up with an electric motor to provide additional low-end power, but this powertrain is only available with the eight-speed automatic. In addition to the standard V-6 and optional four-cylinder hybrid, the Wrangler can also be equipped with a 3.6-liter V-6 with a

similar hybrid assist, a 375-hp plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain, or a 6.4-liter V-8.

Wranglers are born off-road ready, so parttime four-wheel drive is standard across the range and is controlled by a lever on the center console. In our testing, a base two-door Wrangler Sport with the V-6 and the six-speed manual transmission sprinted from 60 mph in 6.1 seconds; a well-equipped four-door Sahara model with the automatic transmission did the deed in 6.8 seconds. With the fourcylinder hybrid powertrain, the four-door Sahara was slightly quicker at 6.5 seconds to 60 mph. The Rubicon model and the High Tide model—both of which carry additional weight in the form of heavier-duty offroading equipment—weren’t as quick as the others in our testing. Performance at our test track shows that the Wrangler JL is much improved compared with the previous model, but it’s merely holding steady with its rivals in some metrics. Although its handling has improved, it’s still truck-like in comparison with today’s refined SUVs and pickups. The ride in the four-door is acceptably smooth over rough surfaces, but braking distances were inconsistent between our two test vehicles.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

In this segment of gas guzzlers, it doesn’t take much to be at the top of the class. The Wrangler’s EPA fuel-economy estimates put it ahead of rivals such as the Bronco and the 4Runner. The V-6-powered four-door Wrangler Sahara returned a 20-mpg result on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, 3 mpg fewer than its EPA rating for highway fuel economy. The turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid model fared much better, delivering 26 mpg—2 mpg more than expected. For more information about the Wrangler’s fuel economy, visit the EPA’s website.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

If the idea of tackling trails under electriconly power is appealing to you, then the 4xe powertrain is the obvious choice. The 17.0kWh battery pack is said to provide up to 25 miles of electric-only driving, but Jeep says that’s enough for a few hours of low-speed off-roading. When the battery runs out, the turbocharged four-cylinder can drive all four wheels like a normal Wrangler, so you needn’t be concerned about being stranded without a charge.

It’s not the most spacious or accommodating SUV available, but the Wrangler provides a seamless blend of vintage and modern Jeep character. A commanding view of the road or trail—makes for easy maneuverability, but the view rearward is obscured by thick roof pillars, roll bars, and various grab handles. Need a better view? Just pop the top and remove the doors. Seated close to the upright windshield, the driver and frontseat passenger face a narrow, squaredoff dashboard punctuated by round air vents

and chunky switchgear for the climate-control system, power windows (if equipped), and infotainment.

As an errand runner, the Wrangler offers enough room for groceries and gear, but be aware that its rear seats don’t fold flush with the floor. As you might expect, there’s a significant cargo-hauling trade-off for going with the classic two-door Wrangler versus the larger Unlimited four-door model. Fitting just two of our carry-on cases behind the two-door’s back seat—versus 10 for the four-door—means packing light if you’re adventuring with friends.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although the Wrangler can be had without basic creature comforts, such as air conditioning and power windows, all models come with a comprehensive infotainment package. Its interface—called Uconnect 5—

is easy to use, quick to respond, and can be displayed on a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Apple Car Play and Android Auto are both standard and work wirelessly. There’s onboard navigation with over 2000 mapped trails, as well as an active noise-cancellation feature that helps to quiet the cabin should you need to take a phone call while on the road.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Jeep offers only a handful of optional driver-assistance features but none of the high-tech equipment that we expect to see on vehicles with price tags stretching into the $40,000-plus and $80,000-plus ranges. We’ve rounded up the best mud tires on the market today, from a range of manufacturers, so you can find the tires you need and get right back to doing what you do best: tearing up the trails.

BFGoodrich T/A KM3

If there’s a performance category that BFGoodrich doesn’t excel in, we have yet to find it. The BFGoodrich T/A KM3 is the American tire brand’s rugged, go-anywhere mud terrain tire for passenger vehicles, and it just may be the best mud terrain tire on the market, thanks in no small part to its advanced, proprietary “Krawl-TEK” rubber compound, which delivers 8% better traction on rocks and other slick surfaces, and a “Terrain-Attack” tread pattern with big, beefy tread blocks that provide monster grip in all directions. Add to that a set of mud-phobic bars on the shoulders that help self-clean in the nastiest of conditions and you have a real winner on your hands.

Of course, that’s not all the T/A KM3 has up its sleeve.
