HAPPY CHRISTMAHANAKWANZIKA!

The holidays are an insane, crazy, happy time of the year. It is a time for giving and gorging, for caroling and cocoa, for Santa and sweaters. It is also an opportunity to spend time with the family, be a part of tradition and try to keep your sanity. No matter what holiday you choose to celebrate, it can bring about a stress that no person can hide from (even the Holiday Cheermeister). We don’t want you to have to face the holiday horrors alone, so we’ve put together this issue with that in mind! From a Black Friday Survival Plan (p. 12-13) to dealing with long lost relatives (p. 31), we’ve got you covered (no literally, we do … check out the Rapping Paper on p. 17-20!)

So this holiday, don’t worry about having to spend awkward moments with Uncle Randy or being judged by your second cousin who is already living the dream while you’re still stuck in the classroom. Don’t fret if you’ve only got $50 to spend on all of your holiday gifts. Don’t lose sleep over what music you’ll play or what food you’ll serve at your party. Just think of this issue as your ‘self-help’ book — study up and get ready for the best holiday of your life! We want to hear from you! Once you’ve read through this issue be sure to leave us some feedback and let us know if this issue helped you deal with the holidays. SET has been around for about a year now and we want to know how we’re doing as a whole. Help us improve by leaving a comment on our Facebook or Twitter (@getsetmag) and we’ll include your quote in our Feedback section in the next issue. If you’re interested in getting involved with SET, check out our website, getsetmag.com/contribute, to find out more! Happy Holidays!

Shoppers expected to spend 9.1% more on gifts this year.

HOLIDAY 2013

Stay on budget by tracking your holiday spending.

THE GIFT GIVER’S GUIDEBOOK FOUR TIPS TO MAKE YOU A RESPONSIBLE HOLIDAY SPENDER With the holiday season quickly approaching, the crazed-frenzy for purchasing gifts is upon us! Are you like Clark Griswold and have the irresistible urge to drain your bank account on your friends and family? If so, props to you on your generosity! But sometimes reckless spending can really hurt your bank account. For this upcoming holiday season, I can recommend four important tips to make you a responsible holiday spender.

1. PRIORITIZE AND PLAN YOUR SPENDING

To make the most of your budget, you should take a piece of advice from Old Saint Nick himself. 1. Make a list – Write down the name of everyone you want to buy a gift for, then rank them based on how important it is that you get them a gift. 2. Check it twice – Create a rough budget for your list. If you have more people on your list than your budget allows for, you can start marking names off from the bottom.

2. SEARCH FOR THE BEST SALES

Now that you’ve prioritized and planned your spending, it’s time to get out there and search for the best sales. First, know that timing is everything — the sooner you get started on holiday shopping, the better (I won’t judge you if you got started in June!). Second, be sure to research sales

“IS YOUR HOUSE ON FIRE, CLARK?” – “NO, AUNT BETHANY, THOSE ARE THE CHRISTMAS LIGHTS.” and clearances online or in the paper. A common misconception of holiday spenders is that only the good deals happen on Black Friday. While Black Friday sales are almost incomparable in greatness, there are more chances to save! Lastly, don’t be afraid to do some shopping for your friends at a thrift shop. A couple of the best gifts I’ve ever received have come from the Salvation Army — I mean, what college student wouldn’t love a decent $10 couch?

3. STAY AWAY FROM IMPULSE BUYING

This one is a hard one for me. I get in the store aisles, and I decide I want to start playing Santa for myself! To avoid this, bring along your shopping list. You are less

likely to buy things on impulse when you have exactly what you need already written down. Still feeling the urge? Remember that this is the season of giving, not hoarding … I mean, do you really need three more pairs of shoes?

lines of credit (especially with high balances) can hurt your score. Also keep in mind that applying for multiple retail cards in a short time span will hurt your credit score for a short time. In-store credit cards are bad news!

4. AVOID IN STORE CREDIT CARD OFFERS

Finally, remember that the holidays are a time to give to others and to show thanks for what you’ve been blessed with. Keep up the holiday cheer and get started on that responsible gift giving!

While shopping for gifts, you will be bombarded with in-store credit card offers. While store clerks will entice you with quick 10 percent discounts and a shiny new design on a card, don’t be fooled. First, these cards have outrageous interest rates — typically between 20 and 30 percent. Also, they can have devastating effects on your credit. Why, you ask? Unless you have very established credit, having multiple

On average, women spend $40-$70 for a purse.

A HELPING HAND positive about it. “Every minute I pour into this ministry is worth it,” she said. In response to her amazing amount of volunteer work with her organization over the years, Bryant was recently awarded The Prudential Spirit of Community Award. She is the first high school student to have ever received this award in the state of Tennessee. Zion Christian Academy held a special ceremony honoring Bryant April 12, 2013, during which they presented her with this prestigious award. This will be Bryant’s 6th year with the organization, and it definitely won’t be her last.

ONE GIRL’S PASSION TO GIVE In passing, Hannah Bryant seems like just a normal girl walking through the halls of Zion Christian Academy in Columbia, Tenn. But start talking to her and you’ll find that she’s far from that, she’s a girl worried more about the wellbeing of others rather than the fact that her nail polish might be chipping. When Bryant was 12 she opened up her closet to find a number of purses that she no longer used. Instead of just throwing them out, she wanted to do something a little more meaningful. She decided that instead of just donating the purses, she would take them, fill them with toiletries and give them to girls in need. From there she worked to create

the well-known organization, “Hannah’s Purse Drive.” Bryant credits her love of helping others to her mother, who always pushed her to do something for others. “She has molded me into the person I am today,” said Bryant. Bryant works closely with organizations such as The Hope House, The Family Center, The Casa of Maury County, The We Care Food Pantry, Mt. Pleasant High School, Columbia Housing and The Boys and Girls Club to make sure she is helping all of the girls she can. After a recent mission trip to areas of Kentucky, Bryant was left heartbroken by the need she found. She plans to expand

CHANGING LIVES ONE PURSE AT A TIME A purse is more than a simple bag that holds pointless objects. A purse is the representation of the woman who carries it, helping to define who she is. While we get to pick and choose from our closet every day, some girls don’t get the privilege of owning something as simple as a purse. “I’ve been called to this ministry to reach out to girls and show them the love, hope and future that God has for them,” said Hannah Bryant, founder of Hannah’s Purse Drive in Columbia, Tenn. Bryant has persistently held a purse drive each holiday season since she was 12, helping to provide for the girls in her community. With the help of volunteers, sponsorships and donations from the community, Hannah’s Purse Drive is able

to provide underprivileged girls purses stuffed to the brim with necessities and goodies. This holiday season will be Bryant’s sixth year to host the drive, during which she will give to over 200 girls in the Columbia area. Each purse is carefully organized depending on the age range of the girl. Bryant and her team of volunteers fill the bags with toiletries, perfume, makeup, shoes, scarves, Bibles and more. One of the biggest fundraisers for Hannah’s Purse Drive is Ha Ha’s for Hannah, a comedy show which has featured special guests such as Sarina Joi Crowe from “American Idol” and Victoria Koloff from ABC’s “Preachers’ Daughters.” While the comedy show brings a lot of laughs (ha ha, get it?), the annual ragball tournament brings in the dough, with supporters donating up to $4,000! This year the drive will take place Dec. 7. If you have any purses you would like to donate to Hannah’s Purse Drive you can go online to www.hannahspursedrive. com and find out how.

FRENCH SETTLERS BROUGHT THE PECAN PRALINE RECIPE TO AMERICA, WHERE IT QUICKLY BECAME AN AMERICAN HOLIDAY TRADITION.

SET CONTRIBUTORS SHARE THEIR FAVORITE RECIPES What’s that you smell? The sweet smell of tradition fills homes everywhere this time of year! When bells start ringing and Grand Marshalls take their first steps, we know it’s time to dust off the festive cookie cutters and put them to good use. Here are a few of our favorite recipes and the stories behind them.

SOUTHERN HOMEMADE DRESSING

Each year on the day before Thanksgiving, my grandmother and I gather up all of the ingredients to make dressing for Turkey Day! This dish comes from my greatgrandmother, who made up the recipe. My grandmother, wanting to have a written copy, made her mom sit down and write out the ingredients instead of playing it all by ear (or taste). Here’s the recipe that we’ve been mixing up ever since:

1 large skillet of cornbread 20 small baked biscuits (Granny makes her own, because she’s all domestic and stuff.) 8 pieces of toast ½ cup chopped onion 1 ½ cup chopped celery 1 tbsp of fine crumbled sage (add more to taste) 2 eggs • Mix all of this up and then add broth (from a can or a cooked chicken/ turkey) to desired taste/texture. • Place it in a glass dish and bake at 375 for about 30 minutes until slightly brown at top.

RECIPE BY ANNE CLAIRE CHEATWOOD

SWEET POTATO PIE

For most Southern families, the holidays mean spending time with one another, exchanging gifts, cooking delicious foods and watching football. My family is from Red Bay, Ala., so food is pretty much at the top of our list. Most of our holiday recipes have been passed down from my great-great-grandmother. Not too long ago I got to spend the day learning how to make my favorite, her Sweet Potato Pie. 5 cups of mashed sweet potatoes 2 eggs 1 cup milk 1 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp butter flavoring 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice 1 tbsp butter 2 uncooked pie crusts • Boil sweet potatoes until tender, then drain and mash. • Mix all ingredients, except butter, into sweet potatoes and stir until evenly mixed. • Pour mixture into uncooked pie crusts. Cut up tbsp of butter and spread across top of pies.

The only science background I had during my childhood was the few days before Thanksgiving and Christmas when my mother turned our kitchen into a laboratory. She would measure boiling liquids and portion quantities of sugary solutions with precision and expertise. I never knew chemistry and cooking went hand in hand. Who did she learn these tactics from? Why, her mother, of course! Each recipe is taught, learned and perfected by each generation. This praline recipe has been in our family for 35 years and counting. 1 cup buttermilk 2 cups granulated sugar 1 tsp baking soda 2 cups pecan halves 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp butter • Pour 1 cup buttermilk, 2 cups granulated sugar and 1 tsp baking soda into a large pot. • Stir the mixture until sugar is completely dissolved. • Place the pot on a low to medium burner and let the candy boil to a soft ball stage, stirring constantly. • The mixture will turn brown in color. • Once the candy reaches the soft ball stage, remove from heat and add 2 cups of pecan halves, 1 tsp of vanilla and 1 tbsp of butter. • Beat the mixture briskly until it becomes glossy and starts to get very thick. • Quickly spoon onto greased, waxed paper.

HOLIDAY 2013

BY JEREMY JACKSON Everyone knows about the day after Thanksgiving … the day when prices drop, people camp outside of stores, and mothers and children leave the house before the sun rises — Black Friday. Many people lose themselves completely in the madness, spending too much money and sometimes even getting hurt. We wanted to make sure that you are prepared when it’s time to do your Christmas shopping, so we’ve put together a plan that will prepare you as you make your way out onto the retail battlefield.

RECRUIT

Good luck as you venture out into the madness of Black Friday. We hope that our advice keeps you safe and sane. Happy Holidays and may the odds …never mind, just Happy Holidays!

• Shopping in groups allows more ground to be covered; take advantage of the buddy system! • Carpooling is an essential part of Black Friday shopping.

• Plan out your strategy with your crew so you can all stay on the same page. • Check the sales using Black Friday apps, in the paper and online. Compare sale items between stores.

PLAN

• Make sure you’re within your budget. • Nail down what items you’re going for and what time that store is opening. You may have to decide between two stores that are opening at the same time. Figure out which item you will want the most.

THE

First thing you need to know is how much money you’ll be saving. That’s “y.”

Have you ever stood in line for 3 hours to only save $40 and then realized it totally wasn’t worth it? We’ve created this formula to help you know how long you can wait for how much you save.

y = ________

B L A C K F R I D AY E Q UAT I O N

• Do a walk-through of all the stores on your list the day before so that you can map out your path. Some stores set out sale items the day before. • Finalize your schedule.

PREP CAR • Which buddy has the biggest car? Choose that one. • Clear out space. • Fuel up.

Now solve for “m.” m = .5 + g + s m = _________

Now consider if you will be receiving any special gifts or reward points (“g”) and if the item is a special edition or limited quantity (“s”).

Finally, plug in your numbers to the formula below and solve for “x.” “x” will determine how much wait time is worth the amount you’ll be saving.

x = ym x = ________ minutes

g = .25 or 0 if N/A s = .25 or 0 if N/A

BODY

GEAR

• Eat Thanksgiving dinner earlier in the day if possible.

• Download Voxer, a walkie-talkie app, to stay in communication with your crew.

• Pack water and snacks to help stay fueled during the long waits.

• If you plan to camp out, prepare any camping gear you may need, see the checklist!

• Check the weather and wear appropriate clothing. If you’re going to be waiting outside, layer up! • Make sure to find your most comfortable shoes to wear. • Get as much sleep as you can on Thursday, your schedule will probably have you starting late Thursday night.

Recycle old newspaper to use as a fun spin on gift wrap.

HOLIDAY 2013

The Kindle Fire was the most popular gift in 2012.

‘TIS THE SEASON TO BE FRUGAL oven and place it in the shaping bowl, pressing it down into the bottom. All that’s left is to mold your bowl into the shape you want! Once you’re finished shaping, set it out and let it cool. This is a great gift for girls and guys, young and old!

QUIRKY COASTERS

Quirky coasters are very easy to make! The hardest part is figuring out what art to use for the top. You could take the record cover from the vinyl you used to make your bowl and create a great complimentary gift! Other options would be a vintage map, crazy artwork, fabric, scrapbook paper or even a child’s drawing. Here’s what you need: • Art • Cork coasters (found at your local craft store) • Scissors • Foam paintbrush • Mod Podge

“YOU SPIN ME RIGHT ROUND, BABY RIGHT ROUND, LIKE A RECORD BABY, RIGHT ROUND ROUND ROUND.”

HOMEMADE HOLIDAY GIFTS FOR GUYS AND GALS It’s the most wonderful time of the year! With the kids jingle belling and wallets are telling you be more frugal! Wait, that’s not right, is it? It seems like the Christmas season always brings along a happy heart but an empty bank account. No matter how much you love to give, most of us dread shopping and ending up

broke. Well fear no more! I have four practical DIY gift ideas that any guy or gal could easily perfect.

CITRUS SALT BODY SCRUB

Show me one girl who doesn’t enjoy a good spa treatment, especially in the dead of winter. I recently found this recipe on Pinterest for an easyto-make body scrub. Fellas, you’ll get extra points if you make this for your lady (or yo’ mama!). All you need is: • ½ cup of sea salt • ½ cup of sweet or light almond oil • ½ teaspoon of lemon zest • ½ teaspoon of orange zest The best part about this project is there is only one step: mix all ingredients in a dry bowl (make sure it’s completely dry, water will dissolve the salt). Pour the body scrub into some cool jars and add some fabric or twine, and now you have an inexpensive Christmas gift

for the ladies in your life.

VINYL RECORD BOWL

Guys, this project is right up your alley. It’s quick, simple and pretty stinkin’ cool. To prepare for this project you need the following: • 7” metal or heat safe bowl (for shaping) • 8.5 - 9” metal or oven safe bowl (for heating) • Cookie sheet • Vinyl record (search any thrift store or antique shop) Heat the oven up to 185. Place the oven safe bowl upside down on top of the cookie sheet, put in the oven for about 4 minutes to heat up. Next, place the record on top of the bowl (the side of the record you want for the inside of your bowl needs to be facing down) and bake until the record starts to droop and looks moldable (about 5-8 minutes). Remove it from the

Simply cut your artwork in the shape of your coaster and use the glue to seal it to the cork. Make sure to add glue to the top and sides and allow 24 hours to dry.

BAKED GOODS

As simple as this idea seems, it is underused but sure to please. All you need is a holiday tin or a mason jar and the ingredients of your favorite baked goods. You can bake the treats and place them in the jar when they cool, or simply add the unmixed ingredients to the jar and attach the directions. Finish it off with a cute bow or fun fabric over the lid. There you have it, four DIY gifts any girl or guy could do. With these ideas, you will be able to save more money this holiday season than you originally thought. No more fretting over the perfect gift or any ‘budgets gone bad’ horror stories this season!

Uptown Theatre in Chicago is the largest stand-alone theater.

Popcorn was first served in theaters in 1912.

MOVIE MAGIC FORGET ABOUT SILVER BELLS, HEAD TO THE SILVER SCREEN! Cooling temperatures and falling leaves remind us it’s time to make winter plans. Whether you’re going to spend time with family for the holidays or simply enjoy some welldeserved time off from school, one thing you should do this winter is go to the movies! With a great line-up this season, there are plenty of great choices.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD

In theaters Nov. 8 This film takes place after Marvel’s “Thor” and “The Avengers.” Chris Hemsworth returns as the Mighty Avenger, Thor, who is fighting to restore order across the universe. He is challenged by an ancient race led by a vengeful Malekith the Accursed, who wants to plunge the cosmos back into a dark world. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot defeat, Thor takes on his most dangerous and personal voyage yet — one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to risk everything to save us all. With an experienced cast like Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins, this film is sure to be a hit.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE

In theaters Nov. 22 May the odds be ever in your favor when getting premier tickets to “Catching Fire.” Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth (I’m sensing a sibling blockbuster rivalry!) star in the second film of “The Hunger Games” series. After returning from winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) and Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson) must immediately set out on their Victor’s Tour of the districts, during which they sense a rebellion in the making. As the special version of the 75th Annual Hunger Games (known as the Quarter Quell) draws near, Katniss

STAY CLASSY. and Peeta realize that this year’s event could change Panem forever. Although the director has changed from Gary Ross to Francis Lawrence, the previews seem to be written and filmed in much of the same style as the first.

THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG

In theaters Dec. 13 The second part of this trilogy continues with the title character, Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), as he travels with Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) into the Kingdom of Erebor to battle the dragon Smaug and reclaim the dwarves’ kingdom. You can expect plenty of battle scenes and a much darker tone than that of the first movie in the series, “An Unexpected Journey.”

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

In theaters Dec. 20 Will Ferrell returns to the big screen as Ron Burgundy, San Diego’s top rated newsman. After putting the

70’s behind him, Burgundy takes New York by storm with the first 24-hour news channel. While this honestly seems to be a movie with no real plot, it’s sure to be full of laughs with the likes of Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner taking the screen.

SAVING MR. BANKS

In theaters Dec. 20 For all you Disney/Mary Poppins enthusiasts out there, this one is a must see. Tom Hanks portrays none other than Walt Disney himself as the film tells the account of Disney’s 20-year pursuit of the film rights to P.L. Travers’ popular novel, “Mary Poppins.” Disney promised his daughters that he would make a movie of their favorite book. Disney pulls out all the stops for Travers’, who refuses him the rights. It is only when he reaches into his own childhood that he discovers the ghosts that haunt Poppins, and together Disney and Travers set Mary Poppins free to create one of the most endearing films in cinematic history.

THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY

In theaters Dec. 25 Tired of sequels? Me too. How about a remake? The original movie came out in 1947 starring Danny Kaye. Ben Stiller starred in and directing this remake, which is loosely based off James Thurber’s 1939 short story. Walter Mitty is an unconfident, mostly incapable man who his prone to be lost in very adventurous daydreams. A series of events at work force him out of the office and into the world that he’s only dreamed of. Stiller also shares the screen with Kristen Wigg, Shirley MacLaine, Patton Oswalt, Adam Scott, Kathryn Hahn and Sean Penn. This winter’s lineup may be the best yet. Now that you’ve got a movie in mind, grab some friends and head over to the Regency Square 12 in Florence or to the Shady Brook Cinema in Columbia!

Over 3 billion Christmas cards are sent in the U.S.

OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS… DO WE HAVE TO GO TO GRANDMA’S? We all have those Tupperwaremooching, socially awkward and generally all-up-in-yo-business relatives. We also have a few of those cousins who seem to have it all together while we still have no idea what we’re doing with our lives. Don’t you just love being around all of these people for the holidays (I can just hear your teeth clenching at the idea)? During these get togethers, we usually wish for an easy way out, but since that ‘out’ never comes, I’m here to help you learn how to survive and (gasp!) maybe even have a good time. In order to get the inside scoop, I braved the trenches and asked my great-aunt Beth some questions that, hopefully, shows you what our older relatives think of us.

YES, YOU CAN EVEN PUT UP WITH THIS SIDE OF YOUR FAMILY.

TAYLOR:

What do you love most about spending the holidays with the whole family?

T: In your opinion, what is the worst thing that could happen at a family holiday?

GREAT-AUNT BETH: My favorite part of the holidays is just to see how everyone has grown and catch up to see what everyone is doing. That is how we found out what was going on before Facebook.

GAB: I’ve had family holidays where

T: What bugs you the most about the younger generation over the holidays? GAB: Your generation doesn’t know how to hold a conversation. It’s probably because most of y’all’s conversation is via a text message. Don’t get nervous. Just talk. T: How have the holiday celebrations changed since you were my age?

GAB: Good gracious where do I start? Well we definitely did not have all this technology like y’all do. We spent most of our time making up holiday games and cooking as much holiday dessert as our kitchen could hold.

inappropriate great uncle twice removed. If you find yourself at a loss for words, you can use a code word or signal and help will immediately follow.

3. PUT A HOLD ON THE TECHNOLOGY

people have accidentally shot someone in the face with fireworks and we spent the rest of the night in the ER. As long as they are breathing when they leave, I am typically happy. So, with Great-Aunt Beth’s words of wisdom in mind, here are some tasteful tricks to ensure a truly tremendous time!

I’m not saying abort all technology for the entire holiday (let’s not get too crazy here), but sometimes we miss out on the good things while our eyes are glued to the phone. Spend more time trying to get to know the extended family, you might just find someone you can relate to.

1. PREPARE YOURSELF

4. JOIN THE CRAZY

You would never walk into a test without being prepared and expect to ace it, so why take the plunge into family infested waters without preparing yourself? Get with your parents and review everyone’s names, you don’t want to be stuck with Aunt Hope and call her Aunt Joy (talk about embarrassing)! You already know there will be a whirlwind of questions ranging from your love life to your 10year plan, so just breathe deep and get ready!

2. CODE WORDS AND SIGNALS WILL BE YOUR BEST FRIEND

Find a fellow relative that gets just how difficult it can be to deal with the family. Together, come up with a code word or signal. This might come in handy when you find yourself out of clever things to say to that slightly

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! This is a win-win for everyone — you might have a little fun by spending time with the family and they get to focus on something else besides your love life. Use this opportunity to enjoy those crazy family traditions. You could even wear your own overzealous and slightly obnoxious Christmas sweater to please your sweet Nanna Joe. It can get pretty intense trying to juggle everything over the holidays. So just go with it — stuff your face, play the silly games and embrace your family. You never know, you might end up having the best holiday season yet.

HOLIDAY 2013

Donate in a friend’s name in lieu of giving a gift.

GIVING BACK DONATING & VOLUNTEERING DURING THE HOLIDAYS The holidays are filled with decorating, baking and family gatherings, but what better way to get in the holiday spirit than giving back to people in need? Our area has so many special ways to give back to our community and touch the lives of those less fortunate. Below are only a few of the many ways to spread the holiday cheer.

THE SALVATION ARMY’S ANGEL TREE PROGRAM

A great opportunity to help during the holiday season is by sponsoring

an Angel with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. Every year, the Salvation Army matches donors with over 2,000 families from the area who are unable to provide gifts and clothing to their children during the holidays. Anyone wanting to be involved with this outreach can visit the Regency Square Mall in Florence, Ala. starting Nov. 21, where they can select an angel from the tree. Each angel has the child’s name, gender, age, clothing sizes and wish list. Sponsoring an Angel from the Angel

Tree is a wonderful way to touch the lives of a child in need in our area.

THE SHOALS COMMUNITY SOUP KITCHEN

The Shoals Community Soup Kitchen was founded in 2009 and is a local ministry hosted by the First Presbyterian Church of Florence, Ala. The soup kitchen is open every Friday and Saturday from noon until 1 p.m. and serves up to 140 meals to people in need each week. They also provide traditional meals on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day every year. Contact Brenda at (256) 764-2081 if you would like to volunteer your time, donate food or contribute monetarily.

HARVEST SHARE FOOD PANTRY OF MAURY COUNTY

The Harvest Share Food Pantry

of Maury County is a hunger relief organization located in Columbia, Tenn. This pantry was started in 1981 and has distributed thousands of pounds of food to the hungry people of Maury County. The holiday season is a time where the food supply is low and the need for volunteers and donations is high. Think about organizing a can food drive in your workplace or get a group of friends together to volunteer your time and talents to better the operation. 10-12% of Americans experience a mild form of winter-onset S.A.D.

BEAT THE BLUES

THE OPRYLAND HOTEL IN NASHVILLE DECORATES WITH OVER 2 MILLION LIGHTS EACH YEAR.

KEEP THE DEPRESSING CHILLS OF WINTER AWAY Along with snow flurries and the holiday cheer, winter can also bring about a gloomy condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.). S.A.D., also known as the winter blues, is usually caused by lack of sunlight. Symptoms include depression, irritability, weight gain and drowsiness. Thankfully, I have a few tips to help you overcome S.A.D. and make the most of this wintry time!

GET CREATIVE! Cold weather means

you spend more time indoors, but don’t become a bum! Use your extra time to do something creative! It’s proven that bright colors make you feel happier, so check out Painting with a Twist in Columbia, TN! With the help of an instructor, you can create your own masterpiece. Bring your own food and drinks and let your inner artist shine!

EXERCISE IS KEY. During winter, going for a run is the last thing on your

mind, but exercise releases serotonin in the brain, which jump-starts the feeling of happiness. Head to the gym or do inhome exercises found online and you’re guaranteed to feel happier and more energetic afterward.

GET OUT OF THE HOUSE. One of the best parts about wintertime is twinkling Christmas lights. If you’re in the Shoals area, get a group of friends together and check out the Wrights’ Lights in the Spring Valley Community starting Dec. 1! This family has been spreading Christmas cheer since 1971 with upward of 60,000 colorful lights! Live around the Columbia area? It’s less than an hour’s drive to see the amazing holiday décor of the Opryland Hotel. MAKE THE MOST OF THE COLD WEATHER. Go ahead and do the fun

things the summer months won’t allow! Relax by the fire with a good book, decorate the house with paper snowflakes and don’t forget to treat yourself to a hot drink from Rivertown Coffee Co. in downtown Florence, Ala. or Buckhead Coffeehouse in Columbia, Tenn. Who said the colder months have to be depressing? With so many wintry activities to choose from, your holiday season is sure to be merry and bright!
