STRA16HT OUTTA 2015 Happy New Year, SET readers! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and kept away from the most pesky of family members. Before I begin telling you about what’s cool in this month’s magazine, I have a short, but worthwhile new year’s anecdote. Before my dad died, he uttered a string of words I’ve found applicable in every aspect of my life, especially in 2015. “Not everything will go your way. Sometimes you get curve balls, and that’s just life.” The statement in itself was a curve ball to me, as my late-teenage brain shook it off in disbelief. I can do anything I want, I thought. Well, I did what I wanted throughout college and quickly learned it wasn’t always what I needed. I mean, 2015 was a weird year, honestly. I won’t hesitate to say I couldn’t find a way to express my anger, except to let it bottle and explode through rage. Emotional issues arose I never knew I had. I couldn’t fix myself no matter how hard I tried. Graduating from college was supposed to be a crowning achievement, but I couldn’t help feeling numb all over. Toward the end of the year, I let it all go. I stopped believing I needed to know every answer to life’s burning questions. I shed the guilt of the past and welcomed a blessing into my life – 2016. One of my favorite pieces in this issue of SET is located on the freestyle page, near the back of the magazine. Eight people answered the question, “How did 2015 make you a better person?” Interviewees answered the question

WASTELANDER’S SURVIVAL GUIDE

PEW, PEW.

FALLOUT 4 NEW FEATURES Fallout fans rejoiced Nov. 10 over the long-awaited release of the franchise’s fourth installment, Fallout 4, set in a post-apocalyptic Boston. Bethesda Softworks composed the new game for seven years before releasing a product that was positively received by both fans and critics; BuzzFeed called Fallout 4 the “best game ever.” Fans were radiating anticipation for the game, and, like a bunch of ghouls, infected many others who had never heard of it. For those who haven’t played any previous Fallout titles (you unfortunate souls), don’t worry. You can easily pick up Fallout 4 and immerse yourself into the gameplay. Fallout games take place in the same world — not always at the same time or place — and each game carries its own unique storyline featuring a different character. However, the details, which are consistent throughout the installments, create a feeling of authenticity and familiarity within the player. For example, the Capital Wasteland of Fallout 3 and the Boston Commonwealth of Fallout 4 both lie on the United States’ east coast, so it

isn’t uncommon for the “Sole Survivor” of Fallout 4 to hear of the work done by the “Lone Wanderer” in Fallout 3. The ability to gain control of land, establish a settlement and build a custommade town is likely the most substantial addition to the world of Fallout. As a beginning player, the best way to take advantage of this new element is to join the “Minutemen,” a dwindling group of dogooders looking to re-establish influence in the Commonwealth. Once the player joins the ranks of the Minutemen, he or she is sent to locations to remove any ghouls, raiders, mutants or deathclaws and replace them with law-abiding settlers. Once a new settlement has been established, the player has the option to continue helping the new settlers or to let them try to survive on their own. Just as in previous Fallout games, the player begins with a number of points (21 in this case) to be allotted into seven categories of attributes: strength, perception, endurance, charisma, intelligence, agility and luck. However, some of the attributes work slightly different than they used to; perception increases the Survivor’s effectiveness when picking locks and shooting nonautomatic rifles, and agility increases effectiveness when sneaking or firing automatic weapons. In Fallout 4, critical hits no longer occur by chance. As successful attacks are performed using VATS, a meter fills that allows the player to execute a critical hit upon 100 percent. A player’s luck attribute increases the speed at which that meter fills. A high intelligence

attribute will still increase the number of experience points gained by a player. However, a new perk called “Idiot Savant” has been added to Fallout 4 and can be unlocked once the player has five points allotted to the luck attribute. Once unlocked, the “Idiot Savant” perk gives the player a chance to randomly receive three times the normal amount of experience points from any action, and that chance is greater if the player’s intelligence attribute is low. For the first time in the Fallout series, there is no level-cap. So, a player will be able to max out each attribute and unlock every perk. The possibilities are literally limitless for the Sole Survivor of Vault 111. Thanks to the new crafting system in Fallout 4, even items that are considered “junk” are useful. In Fallout 3, for example, the only use for a coffee cup was to load it into a “Rock-It Launcher” and shoot it right into the face of an unsuspecting mirelurk. In Fallout 4, that coffee cup can be broken down into ceramic, which is used to build a large number of useful items, from generators and power pylons to feeding troughs for a settlement’s Brahmin. Since no item is actually trash in Fallout 4, a thrifty Survivor is more successful than a wasteful one. In addition to the large number of new features, many familiar elements in the world of Fallout have been improved. Reading magazines grants more specific effects like increasing a character’s damage output at night by five percent, or causing them to regenerate one point of health per minute. Power Armor is no longer just really good armor; In Fallout 4, climbing into a suit of Power Armor is like climbing into a one-man tank. And crafty players can attach a jet pack to it. There’s much debate over which game was best: Fallout 3 for its immersive, Hollywood-quality storyline, or Fallout: New Vegas for its customization and freedom to join any faction in the Mojave. Fallout 4 blew the world away when it combined the best of both worlds and created this revolutionary masterpiece set in history-rich Boston.

FIVE FUN PLACES TO VISIT IN THE COMMONWEALTH (that have nothing to do with the main story):

Canister Launch Shack: The Canister Launch Shack, which is a secondary location and doesn’t appear on the map, is a small shack located Northeast of Relay Tower OBB-915. Inside the shack are propane tanks and three slots to place them where they can be shot with a gun, sending them flying into the sky. Boston Mayoral Shelter: To my knowledge, this has nothing to do with any quest in Fallout 4. If you find the Boston Mayoral Shelter and gain access, inside you will find the remains of the mayor of 2077 Boston surrounded by empty beer bottles and a holotape titled “Mayor’s Goodbye.” More holotapes can be found in the bunker that gives the player some insight into the Mayor’s last days. Walden Pond: Not much to see here but the house that Henry David Thoreau built and the pond, now radiated. If you find yourself at odds with the fast-paced hustle and bustle of Boston, relieve yourself of all possession and find peace at Walden Pond. Just hope the Behemoth doesn’t decide to wander too far north. Museum of Witchcraft: The Salem Museum of Witchcraft is a truly spooky place to visit. I can’t say too much; I don’t want to ruin the surprise. Just turn your lights low, volume up, and bring something than can do some damage. Evil Parking Deck: Just west of Milton General Hospital is a parking deck that some deranged person or group (probably raiders or slavers) has transformed into a maze full of traps and gory scenes leading to a nice treasure.

Savefirst operates in AL, TN, FL, Philadelphia and SC.

LET’S TALK ABOUT TAX, BABY SAVEFIRST OFFERS FREE TAX RETURNS FOR LOWER-INCOME ALABAMIANS

A SAVEFIRST VOLUNTEER ASSISTS AN ALABAMA FAMILY. The 2016 tax season starts this month, and W-2 forms are on their way to those of you who are employed. There are numerous, costly options to have the necessary income tax paperwork filled out, but a free alternative will soon be available in Florence. Alabama’s SaveFirst branch, an initiative of the organization Impact America, offers free tax returns to anyone who makes less than $52,000, said Volunteer Coordinator Hannah Early. “We see people with social security, high school students with a couple W-2s from part time jobs – really anyone who needs a tax return prepared can come see us,” she said. University of North Alabama junior Christina Garrick said the service could be a huge benefit for any college-age students.

“I think it would be a good service for college students because a lot of them don’t know how to do their taxes,” she said. “I still have to get my mom to help me. The biggest thing is making sure students know about the program so they can take advantage of it.” SaveFirst developed in 2006 as a way to keep taxpayers from going to fraudulent preparers, Early said. Alabama’s tax preparation services are unregulated, which can lead to inaccurate returns. The organization also wants to be an asset for Alabama residents. “We want to help anyone with the financial burden they would face going through a tax preparer,” Early said. SaveFirst convenes in over 20 Alabama locations each year, and the 2016 Florence location is Weeden

Elementary School. The group trains student volunteers to prepare the returns in January, and the Florence center will open Jan. 19 and go through Feb. 27, Early said. It will be open Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. “We have a close relationship with the University of North Alabama,” Early said. “They give us a lot of highquality volunteers that come in to work for us. (UNA) is basically our entire volunteer pool for our Florence site.” Although they do have a number of business and accounting majors participate, Early said that is not a requirement. “We provide all the training and the testing, and all that is free,” she said. “We have volunteers from all sorts of programs and majors. Anyone who is interested is more

than welcome to get trained.” Training lasts eight hours, and once they have completed it, students are IRS-certified to handle tax returns through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistants) IRS program, she said. “Volunteers are really the frontline,” Early said. “Last year, we had over 8,600 tax returns filed through our program. It’s a pretty big operation, and our volunteers are the first people our taxpayers interact with.” UNA junior Alex Benson said he would consider using the service and supports SaveFirst using student volunteers. “I think that as long as they were absolutely IRS certified, then that would be a fantastic tool,” he said. “I feel like the 20-25 age bracket is made up of mostly first-time filers, (and) filing a tax return is a daunting thing. Having people our age to assist could potentially make the task a lot simpler.” Garrick said, as an accounting student, she is interested in volunteering with the group. “If, after training, I felt comfortable helping people, I would want to help,” she said. “It could be a good experience, and it would give me a chance to try taxes and see if I liked it or not.” Early said operating in college towns is no coincidence for the group, and it works well for them and the taxpayers using the service. “Most anywhere there’s a large college that we can recruit a lot of volunteers from, that’s the easiest place for us to have a site,” she said. “That’s also were the most dense populations are in the state.”

LifeSouth must collect 266K blood donations a year.

GIVE BLOOD ONE PINT OF BLOOD SAVES THREE LIVES

JANUARY 2016

Lifesouth donations stay in the community.

FROM ONE HEART TO ANOTHER NATIONAL BLOOD DONOR MONTH Huntsville Hospital nurse Sarah Nelson has given blood on several different occasions since being old enough to do so. However, it wasn’t until last year the Athens native found out firsthand the impact donating blood can have. And now, it’s a cause Nelson is passionate about. “It’s something good to do, and it makes you feel you’re doing good for someone else,” Nelson said, in light of January being national blood donor month. In October 2014, Nelson’s sister Jessica Morell was prepping to leave the hospital with her second child when doctors noticed what, at first, appeared to be a heart murmur in baby Raegan. Raegan stayed another night in the hospital and the next day went to see a pediatric cardiologist in Huntsville. Shortly after her arrival, she was rushed to Children’s Hospital of Birmingham with the diagnoses of an interrupted aortic arch. After an infection cleared, Raegan underwent open-heart surgery Nov. 5 when doctors inserted a pacemaker, but afterward her heart began failing. Doctors told Raegan’s family she would need a new heart. A month passed, and Raegan was placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing transplant list at 1A status, or high priority. In the meantime, until a donor could be found, an upgraded pacemaker was inserted to help Raegan’s heart work both chambers. As weeks passed while waiting patiently for a glimpse of good news, a family member approached Nelson about putting together a blood drive for

SARAH NELSON AND RAEGAN Raegan. Nelson saw a need and knew the impact it would have, so she began the planning process. “Raegan had so many transfusions,” Nelson said. “She had 10 surgeries, and in almost every one she had to have blood. When the idea came about to have a blood drive, I thought, ‘What a great idea.’ Everyone was so generous to come out and give in honor of Raegan. It went better than I ever expected.” Three months later, after being put on the transplant list, Raegan’s family got the news there was a donor. However, after months of complications, it became too much for her infant body to handle. Raegan died in August, but her legacy will continue to live on through Nelson’s future donations. “When someone in your family is in need, it makes you want to go out and give that much more,” Nelson said. According to Victoria Bell, District Community Development Coordinator for LifeSouth, one in seven patients entering a hospital is in need of blood.

“There is no substitute for human blood,” Bell said. “With all the medical advances, we still depend on donors to help save lives. The decision to donate can have a huge impact.” LifeSouth is a community blood center, meaning the 14 hospitals spread across the north Alabama region are the first priority for all blood donated with LifeSouth. They are also the largest provider of blood in the state. Not only can investing 45 minutes of time help save up to three lives, but, Bell said there are also several other perks to giving the gift of life. “In addition to a free T-shirt, LifeSouth also has knit hats and cellphone chargers as thank you gifts,” she said. “Every donor also receives a free cholesterol screening and a mini-physical.” The hectic holiday season often results in a blood shortage to begin the new year. Bell said she can’t think of a better time to give back in January, as it’s national blood donor month. “We think the best way to celebrate national blood donor month is to become one,” she said. “Our donors are saving the lives of their neighbors, friends and even family,” Bell said. “It’s a huge job. Every week we need more than 1,000 donors to provide what we need.” LifeSouth has two donor centers that serve the Shoals communities, one inside Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital, and one located behind Helen Keller Hospital in Sheffield. There are also donor centers in Cullman, Albertville, Decatur, Madison, and Huntsville. Because many prefer the convenience of the bloodmobiles that serve north Alabama, Bell encouraged those interested to visit the LifeSouth website to find the nearest blood drive.

SEC league play began with the 1933 season.

JANUARY 2016

AUBURN AND GEORGIA HAVE PLAYED (ALMOST) ANNUALLY SINCE 1892 IN THE

"Deep South's Oldest Rivalry."

Sewanee, Georgia Tech and Tulane used to be in the SEC.

SEC RECAP – THE GOOD, BAD AND UGLY 14 FOOTBALL TEAMS, ONE DESTINY BEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER:

DERRICK HENRY, running Back, Alabama Henry is by far the best player in the Southeastern Conference. He is the Heisman winner with 1,986 rushing yards for 339 attempts on the season. The junior back broke Bo Jackson’s Iron Bowl rushing record when he rushed for 271 yards on 46 carries and added 189 yards on 44 carries in the SEC championship game. He's a workhorse back, as he carried the ball 25 or more times in seven of Alabama’s games this season. An important part of being the best offensive player in the conference is how much a player means to his team. Alabama would not have been a championship contender if Henry was not in the backfield.

BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER:

It was impossible to pick one player over the other. Berry finished the season with three kick return touchdowns and led the conference in average yards per return on kickoff returns. He finished the season leading the country averaging 38.3 yards per return. His 804 return yards on 21 returns ranks No. 6 in the country despite having at least seven less returns than the five players ahead of him. He was a bright spot on a Tennessee team that took a step in the right direction this year. Jones finished the season with three punt return touchdowns. He benefited from his team’s defense as he led the country with 37 punt returns and finished second in the country with 438 yards.

BEST CHANCE OF BEING THROWN OUT OF A GAME:

KENTRELL BROTHERS, Linebacker, Missouri

WILL MUSCHAMP, Head Coach, South Carolina

Brothers leads the SEC in tackles with 152, which puts him 39 tackles higher than the next highest SEC player, Auburn defensive back Johnathan Ford. He also picked off two passes and had a forced fumble. The senior’s draft stock has been rising throughout the season as he recorded at least 10 tackles in all but one game this season.

Newly hired South Carolina head coach and former Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp’s strong language was scrutinized last season when he was head coach at Florida. It came back to the surface in the Iron Bowl when he received a 15 yard penalty in the fourth quarter for his language towards an official. It was illtimed after the previous unnecessary roughness penalty on Auburn. The 30 yards in penalties set Alabama up for a field goal that put the Crimson Tide up 22-13. Though Auburn was outmatched, the penalties were unnecessary and may

BEST SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER:

EVAN BERRY, Defensive Back, Tennessee/ CYRUS JONES, Defensive Back, Alabama

have cost Auburn a chance to upset Alabama. Muschamp was seen yelling at the officials after the made Alabama field goal and he had to be restrained by the Auburn assistants.

BEST UNIFORMS:

THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA Classic and simple, the Tide's uniforms have not joined the ranks of creative or alternative. And that's personally how I like it. Bless 'em - they've been able to work their way through the suffocating number of new uniform designs for teams that haven't had winning records since Jimmy Carter was president. They're the opposite of the Oregon Ducks, who change uniforms every week. They've had the same style since Forrest Gump was returning kicks, and, you know what mama says. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

BEST CHANCE TO HAVE FANS LEAVE EARLY: THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY

Isn’t there a basketball game going on? The Wildcats had a good season but they're still a basketball school. Once basketball season started, I'm sure Lexington stopped caring about...wait, there's a football team in Lexington?

TEAM REVIEW ALABAMA- (12-1, 8-1) Home 6-1, Road 4-0

Alabama’s season looked like it was

going down the drain when they fell to Ole Miss Sept. 19 in Tuscaloosa. Alabama gave up 43 points to the Rebels that game. Since then, the Tide’s defense gave up more than two touchdowns only once. Bama has the best player and coach in the country in Derrick Henry and Nick Saban, respectively.

AUBURN (6-6, 2-6) Home 4-4, Road 2-2

The combination of offensive-minded head coach Gus Malzahn and defensive guru Will Muschamp was supposed to make the Tigers one of the best teams in the conference. Instead, Auburn won just two conference games. They had the least amount of sacks in the conference, and were No. 11 in most points given up in the conference. This season has been a step back for the Tigers and their program.

ARKANSAS- (7-5, 5-3) Home 4-3, Road 3-1

When they were good, they were really good. They went on the road to beat Ole Miss and LSU in back-toback weeks. They took a step forward this season, but it seems as if sometime in the mild, Fayetteville winter they walked backwards. Arkansas scored the second most points per game in the conference, but their defense gave up the most points per game.

FLORIDA (10-3, 7-2) Home 7-1, Road 3-1

This time last year, the Gators were searching for a new head coach to replace Will Muschamp. First year head coach Jim McElwain has been able to take a team, made mostly of Muschamp

recruits, and make Florida the best team in the East division. A 27-2 loss to Florida State Nov. 28 ruined Florida’s chance for a spot in the college football playoffs. The team fought hard in the SEC championship but couldn't break Alabama's defense.

GEORGIA (9-3, 5-3) Home 6-1, Road 3-2

With longtime head coach Mark Richt relieved of his duties and heading to Coral Gables to coach the University of Miami, the Bulldogs’ season cannot be considered a success. UGA won the games they should have this season but struggled against the high-quality teams they played. They were blown out by Alabama and Florida 38-10 and 27-3, respectively. New head coach Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs will have a long offseason as they attempt to keep their recruiting class intact.

KENTUCKY (5-7, 2-6) Home 4-4, Road 1-3

Kentucky was, well, Kentucky this season. They played well out of conference, but once they got into the conference schedule, they faltered. They began the season 4-1 with wins over South Carolina and Missouri. The Wildcats looked like they were more than a basketball school. Then, they lost six out of their last seven games to finish with a losing record. The one game they won in that span was against FCS team Charlotte.

LSU- (8-3, 5-3) Home 6-1, Road 2-2

Leonard Fournette was the frontrunner

The first conference team to win the national title after formation of the SEC was Alabama in 1934.

for the Heisman trophy. He ran over teams with unparalleled ease. The Tigers were 7-0 and No. 4 in the AP Coaches Poll. Then November happened. It all began Nov. 7 in Tuscaloosa when Alabama embarassed LSU. Bama's defense held Fournette to 31 yards on 19 carries as the Tigers fell to Alabama 30-16. LSU allowed the Alabama game to affect them the following two weeks as Arkansas won in Baton Rouge. Then, they lost to Ole Miss in Oxford. The media frenzy around Les Miles and his job security before LSU's Nov. 28 victory over Texas A&M was a fitting cap to a tough November for the program.

MISSOURI (5-7, 1-7) Home 4-3, Road 1-4

Missouri's only conference victory came against South Carolina. They scored more than 21 points only three times, and one of those games was against Southeast Missouri State. Gary Pinkel’s last season at Missouri was a disappointing one. Missouri chose to decline a bowl invitation, despite the lack of teams with winning records across the country allowing them the opportunity this season.

MISSISSIPPI STATE (8-4, 4-4) Home 4-3

The Bulldogs went 0-4 against Top 25 teams and lost the Egg Bowl against Ole Miss. MSU took a small step back from last season, which was to be expected. Dan Mullen did a fantastic job of turning them into a solid team, and Dak Prescott has done an exceptional job as quarterback. It will be interesting to see

Mississippi State Bulldogs used to be called “Maroons.”

how the team moves on from Prescott next season.

OLE MISS (9-3, 6-2) Home 6-1 Road 3-2

Quarterback Chad Kelly and the Rebels did it again. A year after upsetting Alabama in Oxford, the Rebels unseated the SEC giant Sep. 19 with a 43-37 win in Tuscaloosa. They appeared to be on their way to the college football playoffs, but their losses to Florida and Memphis took them out of contention. They lost one more game to Arkansas but were able to finish the season with big wins over LSU and Mississippi State.

SOUTH CAROLINA (3-9, 1-7) Home 3-4, Road 0-5

The Gamecocks were the worst team in the conference. They were so bad that legendary head coach Steve Spurrier resigned two weeks into October. Their three wins came over North Carolina, UCF, and Vanderbilt… and they played The Citadel. That's right, the Citadel beat South Carolina 23-22 in Columbus. Former Florida head coach and Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has been hired as the new head coach for the Gamecocks. He will have a lot of work ahead of him as he attempts to replace a legend.

Derrick Henry touchdown to beat them. The Vols were the most improved team in the conference and will continue to get better going into next season.

TEXAS A&M- (8-4, 4-4) Home 6-2, Road 2-2

The Aggies were a good team in a hard conference. They were 2-2 against top 25 teams but one of those wins was against an Arizona State team that finished 6-6 in a Pac 12 conference. The Aggies struggled against good teams and their Nov. 28 loss to a struggling LSU team was not how they wanted to end the season.

VANDERBILT (4-8, 2-6) Home 3-3, Road 1-5

Oh, the forever young Vanderbilt team. The Commodores always look like a team that will be good in two years, but in two years it's the same saying. They only scored 182 points the whole season but their defense was able to hold teams to 252 points. They lost to Florida only 9-7 Nov. 7, but did drop a game to Western Kentucky. Maybe in a couple of years this young team will be able to compete in the SEC.

TENNESSEE (8-4, 5-3) Home 6-2, Road 2-2

The Volunteers made tremendous strides this season. They were 1-2 against top 25 teams, so their schedule wasn't as tough. But, they won the games they were supposed to win. They beat Georgia, and it took Alabama a late

Let’s not forget to mention that an entire portion of his platform is dedicated to preserving monarch butterflies.] Willie Wilson TITLE WE MADE UP: The Notorious Will.I.E. “Willie Wilson is a classic rags-to-riches American success story. The poor Louisiana boy who fled conditions he considered to be virtual slavery and once worked as a janitor for $2 an hour eventually came to own the stores he used to mop. Now, a self-made man, he brings a liberal voice to the presidential race. Living in Chicago, Dr. Wilson made the decision to run for Mayor of the Windy City. Despite being virtually unknown in the world of politics, his charisma and skillful campaign management won him over 11 percent of the vote and a third place finish, enough to attract notoriety in the local press. Encouraged by this result, he is now seeking the Democratic nomination for president in 2016.” Jack Fellure SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Never, Ever, Ever Give Up “A stubborn refusal to say “die” is one of the hallmarks of Jack Fellure, who’s been running for president every four years since 1988. He’s a dauntlessly religious man and a rock-solid conservative, advocating alcohol prohibition and the criminalization of homosexuality, among other right-wing positions. In each and every one of these races, he made a Republican bid, with the sole exception of his 2012 campaign; there, he initially ran Republican, then chose to change course and seek the nod of the Prohibition Party. In this, he finally succeeded, securing Prohibition’s nomination. On election day, his name appeared on the ballot in only one state – Louisiana – where he received 518 votes. For the 2016 race, he is back with the GOP, having declared himself a Republican candidate.”

Derrick Michael Reid SLOGAN WE MADE UP: 2+2= Reid 4 President “A hard worker with a bright mind that has brought him great academic advancement, Derrick Michael Reid is more at home solving equations than discussing politics. He has some fervent political opinions, mostly focusing on personal liberty, but his difficulties in communicating them promise to be a liability. Despite having been a gifted student who readily mastered the difficult fields of engineering and law (so that he is now both an electronic engineer and an attorney), he admits that his ability to write and otherwise communicate in English is limited, calling mathematics his first language.”

The new year (2K16) is here and with it comes all the big names tied to this year’s upcoming presidential election. Most people are all too familiar with the Clintons, the Bushes, the Sanderses and the Trumps of this heated race. However, we at SET think it is high time that some of the other presidential hopefuls got some good old-fashioned media exposure. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the OTHER nominees for the next leader of the free world…

Vermin Supreme SLOGAN WE MADE UP: I’m Golden, Ponyboy “In an election climate where candidates succeed by discouraging citizens from engaging in independent cognitive activity, repeat CandidateVermin Love Supreme, (the only bona-fide American Presidential Candidate to actually donate a living organ,) has broken away from the rat pack. Whatever public office he’s seeking, Vermin’s participation in electoral forums raises the critical questions that your run-of-the-mill apparatchicks will necessarily ignore. But once raised, these issues have refused to die. Only through Vermin Supreme’s dilligent campaigning over the years have certain questions and issues of policy come to the foreground, specifically dental hygiene law, flying monkey public safety assurance program and time travel research funding. [Text from Vermin came straight to the writers via ESP. Yes, the man has ESP. Roll Tide.] Howell Astor SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Not a Fan of Hillary “If you ask Howell Astor, unemployment is the biggest problem facing America. He wants to do something about that, by putting people back to work and stopping the flow of American jobs to China. He also doesn’t have many nice things to say about Hillary Clinton, and he’s a Democrat today because he wanted to take her on. Astor chooses to share little personal information on his campaign website beyond his name and that fact that he is happily married and has a college-aged stepdaughter. He does not discuss his place of residence, academic credentials, or employment history. Even his current occupation goes undisclosed, though he proudly states that he is not a politician, and that he considers this a conspicuous qualification for the presidency he seeks. Though he is traditionally identified as politically Independent, he recently became a Democrat in order to compete directly against Hillary Clinton. Zoltan Istvan SLOGAN WE MADE UP: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love Skynet “It’s all about technology for Transhumanist Party founder and presidential nominee Zoltan Istvan. His main priority is the allocation of funding for research scientists to develop augmentations for the human body that will destroy disease, enhance natural senses, and even conquer the specter of death. He believes that by vastly increasing the resources available to research scientists, it will be possible to develop technologies capable of dramatically improving the human body. Istvan speaks of bionic eyes enabling blind people to see and mechanical limbs repairing those who have been maimed, but he goes further, suggesting that the eyes could be tuned to detect not only naturally visible light but infrared and ultraviolet radiation as well, and that the prosthetic arms and legs could be many times more powerful and dextrous than biological extremities.” Robert Steele SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Look at that smile. “Briefly a candidate for the Reform Party presidential nomination in 2012,

Willie Carter TITLE WE MADE UP: Captain America “This retired USAF member and father of nine definitely brings something different to the table. Carter is in his eighth consecutive run for the Presidency, which he entered because he was commanded of the Lord to enter the race to become President of the United States of America. Today, the Texas-born father of nine is a very active member of the Church of God In Christ, where he is serving as a Deacon and at the Revival Center Triedstone in Los Angeles where he serves as General Sunday School Superintendent. Carter also owns “Fantastic Sounds Gospel Recording”, a recording studio located in Long Beach, California and is a former member of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States of America.” Harry Braun SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Noah 2016 “Deeply concerned about environmental disaster, Harry Braun looks to the construction of arcologies for shelter from the coming chaos. He also worries about bribery and corruption in government, and seeks a Constitutional Convention to pass an amendment giving direct control to the American people. He has drawn up some impressive plans for these systems, which would run on wind-hydrogen power and be capable of running food production facilities 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” Brad Winslow SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Why Pay Politicians? “Brad Winslow believes the federal government is a business owned by the American people – a business whose managers are insufficiently accountable to their bosses. He reveals few of his policy ideas, but he’s passionate about one goal: The “Public House Amendment” to the Constitution. Winslow proposes the creation of a new chamber of government, the Public House, to be staffed entirely by unpaid or modestly paid volunteers, and whose purpose would be popular oversight of elected politicians. Winslow’s focus on the promotion and advancement of the Public House Amendment is so intense that, when discussing his plans should he become president, he scarcely speaks of anything else. This makes it difficult to evaluate the balance of his political positions and policy objectives.” Joy Waymire SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Healer in the Hat “Joy Waymire is a Godly woman who believes the Lord has shown her the way, even to the point of healing a slew of incurable medical conditions from which she once suffered. Politically, she is a straight-laced Libertarian, calling for little government and maximum personal freedom. Waymire’s politics are pleasing to just about any Libertarian ear, making her a good fit not only for adherents of

that party but also for many fiscal and social conservatives among Republicans. However, her profoundly supernatural mindset could easily be viewed as irrational by many, raising questions about her clarity of thought and vision.” Jill Stein

SLOGAN WE MADE UP: I’m Green AbahdeeAbahDye

“Jill Stein is no stranger to national politics. Stein first entered the political arena when she ran for governor of Massachusetts in 2002. She was also a candidate for that office in 2010 before accepting the Green Party’s nomination for President in 2012. As the Green Party nominee in 2012, she understands the rigors of a national campaign. Stein is a fierce advocate for the environment and believes that investments in green issues can propel the American people and economy forward.” Tami Stainfield SLOGAN: Aliens are Living Inside My Head “After living in nine different states, visiting twenty-nine countries all over the world, and living and studying in Africa for more than five years, the independent candidate Tami Stainfield is definitely an Anti-Globalist who has traveled the globe. One of the videos on Tami Stainfield’s YouTube channel shows one monologue of hers, featuring subject of mind control, which according to her, is an instrument widely used for forcing individuals to reason and behave in a certain way.” Samm Tittle

TITLE: Samm Jobs

“Samm Tittle is an advocate for everything that made America great. As an experienced entrepreneur, Tittle understands that when given a job and an equal playing field, an individual can achieve great things. As a citizen politician, she believes in truth in government and equal rights for all. For Tittle, jobs are the most important thing because with no job there is no freedom. When an individual has a job they are contributing members of society and many of the problems the country faces are solved.” David Jon Sponheim SLOGAN WE MADE UP: Your Certifiable Genius “It’s easy to think of incidents in American history that may have turned out better had the President at the time enjoyed an IQ score of 185, and that’s just what David Sponheim brings to the table. Disillusioned with Democrats with whom he identified for decades, he’s started his own party – and he has some big ideas. Sponheim’s social reformation and environmental protection ideas place his ideology generally left of center, but his proposals may appear extreme even to many Democrats. His chances of gaining traction in the Presidential race may be questionable, but one thing is certain: With his own political party behind him, he is sure to win the nomination.”

VERMIN LOVE SUPREME Yeah, the guy with the boot on his head. He wins. Why? He stands on a “free pony platform.” And who doesn’t want a free pony? In addition, he will require U.S. citizens to practice good hygiene and brush their teeth. Also, Supreme may be the only president taking the possible forthcoming zombie apocalypse seriously. He is the only candidate who provides a plan. Finally, Supreme plans to dump tons of money into time travel research. That’s right: he plans to go back in time and kill Baby Hitler. (Sounds like Jeb has been taking notes here – and getting all the press). Nonetheless, the boot-headed Supreme takes the prize.

But seriously. This isn’t entirely a joke. We U.S. citizens have the right to vote for whomever we’d like, from a woman who believes she’s possessed by aliens to the man who, according to him, has the highest IQ ever recorded. So, if you believe in a free pony platform, well you can vote for that. The thing is: get out there and fill in a ballot. As Vermin Supreme says, “Vote Early. Vote Often.”

FROM “BRRRR” TO BOUTIQUE WINTER LAYERING IN COZY COLUMBIA Now that the holidays are over and you've gained five pounds from the cookies consumed during the past month, you may be staring into your closet in need of some new winter wear. It’s time to put away those tacky Christmas sweaters and embrace the chance to add some new life to your wardrobe! Get ready for some 70s-inspired looks, lace details and layer upon layer of comfy goodness, brought to you by two adorable boutiques nestled on the square of downtown Columbia. My first stop was Oak & Lace, a boutique of handcrafted items, trendy clothes and upcycled furniture, located on 802 S. Main Street. It’s organized into different sections, and each section is created by a unique, local vendor. Casey, owner and fashion connoisseur, welcomed me to this local treasure. She gave me some much-needed advice on winter fashion. “Fringe on everything,” she said while talking about ways to continue boho-gypsy and 70s trends. These days you can find fringe on boots, bags, tunics and just about anywhere you look. It’s a great way to join in on the look without going full-on flower child. Winter, even here in the South, is just plain cold. One way to combat this is to layer. Instead of a sweater and jeans combo, Casey offers undershirts - lace shirt, dress extenders or a ruffled tank to add a little something unique to an outfit. The lace underneath a sweater provides you with a more detailed and puttogether ensemble, not to mention the extra layer that keeps you warm. In this outfit created by Casey, you’ll see a lovely rust-colored sweater ($36) layered atop a neutral ruffled tunic ($28). She paired them with a classic blue distressed denim ($59) and suede wedge booties ($38). Accessories can make or break an outfit, so she chose an olive green bag with leather detail that says “Keep Calm and Carry On” ($38), and a beaded necklace with a leather tassel ($58). This local winter outfit allows you to stay perfectly warm and cozy while still looking cute.

LILY JANE When I walked into Lily Jane (across the square from Oak & Lace on 40 Public Square), the first thing I noticed was the lovely mint green tiled floor, the shiny pendant lights and creamy white walls. I was drawn to the displays of candles and gifts, baby items and stationary, but the real gems of the store are the clothing options. Lucy, owner of the boutique, considers a structured and detailed winter coat a staple for this season. She says patterns, lace, buttons and embroidery are the statement for outerwear. Layers can really lend a lot of personality to an outfit. Lucy suggests, “scarves, tunics, sweaters, coats, leggings and patterned or plain tights are all great layering items.” The point is to add interest and warmth at the same time. Pictured is a blue chiffon dress with sequin beading around the collar and sleeves ($58). In order to add some warmth, Lucy puts a cream colored coat with lace detail around the collar and down the front ($138). This dreamy coat also comes with a cream colored sash allowing you to tie it in the front. These details make a stunning evening outfit great for any Valentine outings

OAK & LACE you may have planned. If you’re still staring at your closet shivering from the cold, come explore these two shops on Columbia’s downtown square. They’ll help take the chill off winter with their warm clothes and warm attitudes to help you find the best outfit. Spring will be here before you know it, but in the meantime, stay warm in your comfy layers, and enjoy those leftover holiday cookies.

NatureBox snack service makes $8.5 million annually.

BLUE APRON ESSENTIALS.

KETCHUP ON THE LATEST FOOD SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES It’s a new year. You’ve promised yourself to get healthy, watch your budget or try something new. With food subscription services, it’s easy to do all three. The food subscription service industry is booming, with boxes ranging from traditional meals to vegan snacks and even Japanese-style sweets. Each of the food subscription services has its pros and cons, and you can easily find the best service for your budget and taste.

BLUE APRON

One of the most renowned food subscription services, Blue Apron’s service, is three-fold: recipes, pre-portioned ingredients and low-calorie, low time commitment cooking. Ultimately, the goal is to cater to those who just don’t have time to shop, but want to cook from-scratch, healthy meals. You can buy meal plans for two people or for a family (four people) with a menu that varies week-to-week. Meals may be lamb and beef burgers with carrot fries or tamarind-glazed cod with cucumber relish. You can rest assured you are getting quality ingredients, sourced from small businesses rather than large corporations. The service provides three recipes per week for a two-person plan — $9.99 per serving —

for a weekly total of $59.94. While the price is high, it is unlikely you will get a healthier, cheaper alternative to satisfy you for the week.

LOVE WITH FOOD

We may be asking a bit much to expect you to cook a meal for two every night. If that’s the case, you may want to try this snack box starting at $7.99 per month. Snacks are always organic or all-natural, GMOfree, gluten-free or free of artificial preservatives. Better yet, when you help yourself you help a child in need — for every box you purchase, one box is donated to a hungry child in America. If you have a few extra bucks, the $16.50 deluxe box offers 16-20 snacks and donates two boxes to children. Potential snacks include nuts, crackers, dips, cookies and popcorn. This is ideal for the foodie who wants to try everything at least once, but does not want to shell out money for a plethora of one type of snack.

KOSHBOX

OK, let’s scrap the healthy idea for a moment. Koshbox offers Japanese snacks for $10 per month. Most of the snacks are rice

balls and cookies, but the packaging in and of itself is worth the price. Covered in Hello Kitty, pandas, Godzillas and flowers, most of the snacks look too cute to eat. To be warned, though, it is a Japanese snack box meaning many of the packages have Japanese writing on them — only Japanese writing. You’re pretty much winging this. On the plus side, as someone who has been to Japan, I can assure you there is very little that will taste bad — just watch out for the Matcha-flavored items.

TEABOX

No steep prices here, just steeped tea. With this tea subscription service, you’ll get 12-15 servings of tea for $9.95. You can pick the amount of caffeine you want in your tea, and each month Teabox will send you three new teas to try with a description of the aroma, palate, ingredients, steeping instructions and recommended add-ins. The best part of this tea is the diversity of color. You can clearly tell these leaves are not scraped from the bottom of the barrel — there are no stems, only dried, full leaves. Samples include chai, black, white and more, and Teabox offers unique tea recipes on their Facebook page. They will even offer you a half off price if you

type in your email when prompted.

TREATSIE

When I hear “artisan,” I imagine a Swiss chocolatier carefully crafting delectable morsels at a steep price. With Treatsie, steep prices be damned. Your monthly box is $19.95 and includes at least $25 worth of handcrafted sweets from at least three different vendors. Each box comes with information about the vendors and what you’re eating, so you can order more from those vendors for others (or yourself, no judgment). Past boxes have included candy bars, peanut butter cups, fruit chews and caramels, but it varies month-to-month. Occasionally, however, Treatise will send you a box that is a bit less than $19.95. Those $30 boxes make up for the price difference, though. *Official rating system:

Gain ten pounds by incorporating chocolate into every meal consumed.

2. Clock in 20 hours of Netflix per week. WHO NEEDS A PART-TIME JOB? 3. Make to-do lists without checking anything off of them. 4. Break the Guinness world record for most slices of pizza consumed under pressure.

5. NAP. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. 6. Focus less on quality friendships and go for quantity — more Insta likes and Snapchat and Twitter followers.

7. Prioritize your time by learning all lyrics to Justin Bieber, Adele and Coldplay’s new albums (already made quite a dent on those).

8. Max out three credit cards in the year. 9. HAVE MORE ‘ME’ TIME. Get manicures once a week, a massage bi-

FREESTYLE “2015 has been a huge stepping stone into my future for maturing and becoming my own individual. I graduated high school and joined the U.S. Navy both in May, so this year has prepared me to take on the world for myself.”

“2015 has quite possibly been the most productive year of my life. I broadened my creative boundaries, and pushed myself to my limits. I’ve created many relationships and deepened the ones that I already had. It’s been a year for learning lessons that I’ll never forget.” (Noah Tidmore)

“I think struggles and hardships are what change people the most. Some difficult times have definitely changed me for the better and made me thankful for everything God has brought me through.”

“Well, in 2015 I have become a father as well as a small business owner. I have most definitely learned a lot and grown exponentially. The Lord has blessed my family so much and I thank Him everyday for my family and the success my business, Dixie Garage, has seen.”

“2015 has been a year of change. I’ve definitely felt myself grow. Growth can be hard, but oh so sweet at the same time. I’ve made new friends, found new hobbies, and grown to love the life He’s given me more and more.” (Rivers Hovater)

“2015 has been a year of new and great things. Lots of new friendships that I’ll forever be thankful for. The opportunities that I have been given have grown and stretched me and I’m grateful that the Lord continues to show me His plan for my life.”

“2015 has been a year of both endings and beginnings. Between graduating high school and coming to college, I’ve had to adjust and adapt. 2015 has definitely helped me find myself and appreciate the people who made me who I am.”

“I’ve become a business owner, and that’s pretty tight. And being in this kind of position makes you care more, in more ways than one.”
