Not one year of my life has passed that I didn’t face a body image issue. I was the chunker lagging behind everyone in the one mile run, the porker who squeezed into those itty bitty Kindergarten desks and the fat kid whose favorite part of the school day was lunch time. All my sports physicals ended with the doctor saying, “Maybe losing a few pounds would do you some good?” But afterwards I celebrated with a milkshake because I stood on one leg for ten or more seconds. Fat. Overweight. Chunky. I learned to say the words everyone repeatedly called me. I look back on those moments and am embarrassed. Why? I didn’t love the body that loved me. In this issue of SET, we outline and explain two different body types – the Crossfit bod and the dad bod. While the Crossfitters identify with a more chiseled physique, those with the dad bod enjoy a fleshier lifestyle. If you identify with one of these body phenomenons, great. If you don’t, that’s fine, too. Bottom line, body positivity is exclusively in the eye of the beholder, and it’s a trait we all have to learn to grow in life. The way I see it is this world needs more portly women like me. Women who can, with two hours’ time and a cold glass of sweet tea, cook a southern spread to feed the block. And slap together dessert while everyone else is eating round one. I learned to fall in love with my linebacker shoulders and concrete block thighs. And just like my grandma always says, “Honey, you ain’t fat. You

There are facts about Crossfit and dad bod physiques in the feature, as well as some pretty funny pictures, too. Please, have a laugh and enjoy it. But always remember to love yourself, no matter your body type. Because it’s only a shell of the person you really are. In this issue you’ll also read about a Shoals fiddler gearing up for the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddler’s Convention, an area police officer who looks back on 9/11, a Columbia, Tennessee music festival with a big name lineup and a ketchup cake. Yep, I said it. A Heinz Ketchup cake. And as always, please reach out if you’re interested in writing for this awesome publication. If you’re passionate about something and bring a willingness to work, SET is excited to have you. Happy reading.

MONEY 5

SEPTEMBER 2015 WWW.GETSETMAG.COM

Average smartphone user spends 2 hrs/day on apps.

App creators make less than $35,000 annually.

MONEY TALKS, AND SO DOES SIRI SMARTPHONE APPS TO EARN YOU POCKET CHANGE Whether you need extra cash for a night at the movies, a trip to Taco Bell or a parking ticket, there are ways to earn pocket change in little-to-no time using only your smartphone. Below are four apps available for iPhone and Android that can earn you enough money to have fun with friends without dedicating your time to a part-time job. Each app has an average payment price based on my summer using the apps in the north Alabama area, and a job availability scored from zero (impossible to earn money) to 10 (impossible NOT to earn money.)

GIGWALK

This app allows you to complete various jobs from checking products to stocking shelves to updating YellowPages. After logging in and setting up your account, you will be taken to a map using your location. Green pins pop up to indicate jobs near you, and tapping on a pin gives full details of the job. Usually, you need to take quality pictures and answer a series of questions about the business, warranting a payment range from $2.25 to $20 per job. Most tasks I have completed for this app include asking local business managers basic details to update their online phone book profiles or hanging promotional products for various companies in retail stores. Average Payment: $10 Job Availability: 6

EASYSHIFT

Similar to Gigwalk, EasyShift allows you to pick up shifts in your area by checking products, taking photos and answering simple questions. This app’s identifier is, “Get paid to shop, eat and explore in your city.” With EasyShift, however, you can only reserve one job at a time. Payment ranges from $5 to $20 per job. Most jobs for this app involve taking photos

of promotional products and endcaps - a display for a product placed at the end of an aisle - in hardware and retail stores. Average Payment: $8 Job Availability: 9

GYMPACT

For fitness enthusiasts, or those looking to get back in shape, GymPact can help you stick to your goals using a simple motivator: money. Each week, you have the opportunity to set goals for how often you want to work out, how many vegetables you want to eat or tracking how much you eat each day. The app uses GPS to track whether you are at a gym or, if you are more of an outdoor jogger, tracks time and movement. For food documentation, the app syncs with MyFitnessPal and requires you to log three meals each day totaling at least 1,200 calories. It’s simple: take a photo of each veggie and/or fruit you eat. The photo is then shown on other users’ phones, and they will vote as to whether or not your fruit or vegetable counts as a serving. For each day you miss of either working out, logging meals or eating veggies (dependent on your individual plan), you pay a minimum $5. You can make the penalty higher for more motivation. The more goals you set for yourself, the more money you make. Each week, you have the opportunity to make between 30 cents and $5. While this is one of the lower paying apps, the long-term benefits of healthy eating and exercise combined with the money are worth the time and effort. Average Payment: $1 Job Availability: 10

SURVEYS ON THE GO

If you like watching movies, talking about yourself or giving opinions on store products, this is the app for you. As a form of market research, the app pays you for opinions. In my time using

WOW. THAT’S ALMOST FOUR MCDOUBLES. the app, I’ve been asked questions about Target, political views and movie trailers. Pricing depends on the job, however most surveys give you a minimum 10 cents to see if you qualify for the survey. Movie viewing has shown the highest profit, with $10 minimum for seeing films on opening weekend. In less than a month I’ve earned about $20 by answering simple questions like my age, education, income and whether or not I saw certain advertisements in stores or on television. Average Payment: $1 Job Availability: 6

weekly advertisements. If Wal-Mart is not the lowest price, they’ll pay you the difference. Similarly, Ibotta is an app that gives you money back for purchasing certain products. For any given product, you can watch a video, answer questions or rate the product to earn bonuses, but you must provide the receipt and barcode of the product to receive money back. And if you’re an Android user, the app Locket places advertisements on your lock screen, allowing you to regularly open your phone or click on the ad and earn cash - up to $260 a month.

OTHER APPS

There are a slew of other apps worth downloading, each with its own pros and cons. The Wal-Mart app allows you to scan your receipt in Savings Catcher mode, then compares the prices on your receipt to other stores’

The first tailgate may have occurred at the Battle of Bull Run in 1861.

TAILGATE HACKS

WHAT LOOKS BETTER, THE HOT DOGS OR MY CROSSFIT BOD?

ICE, CHARCOAL AND FIRE, OH MY! Summer is coming to a close, yes, but football fans rejoice because pigskin season is right around the corner. One of the best parts of the football season is, you guessed it, the tailgate. One aspect of pregame everyone can agree on as a favorite tailgate tradition is food. The best tailgate food in the Shoals, without a doubt, is Bunyan’s Barbecue. The famous slaw dogs — a sweet and spicy, house-made slaw atop a childhood classic, beef weenies and a soft bun — are a must and aren’t a bad deal for $2.45 apiece. How about a cold drink to wash those slaw dogs down? To keep

your milkshake from Trowbridge’s, $2.85, or your fruit tea from Legends Steakhouse, $2.69, ice cold all day, go to Alabama Outdoors on Court Street and purchase a 30 ounce Yeti Rambler for $40 or a Hydro Flask Wide-Mouth water bottle for $33.99. Not only are these receptacles the rage, they’re also indestructible in case your team blows a last second Hail Mary for a loss. For you UNA fans, visit Printers and Stationers Inc. in downtown and pick up a pin, $3-5, or other lion pride gear to show your support during the lion walk. It’s named the lion walk not only for the leisurely stroll through downtown, but UNA’s very own lions parade down the street before the football team takes on its opponent. Before you leave campus after a great Saturday with friends, make sure to stop at the on-campus or off-campus bookstores, located feet within one another on UNA’s campus, for a new T-shirt, $15, for the next weekend’s home game.

Henry Heinz began making ketchup in 1876.

Canada’s ketchup recipe is sweeter than the U.S. version.

KETCHUP CAKE? NO, WAIT. YES. THANK CANADA FOR THIS RECIPE Put it on your fries. On your hashbrowns. Your eggs. Hotdogs. That freaking delicious Odette burger. Dip your Ricatoni’s/City Hardware chicken tenders in it. Ketchup goes on everything. But does it go IN everything? I don’t know. But, I made a cake with it. Apparently created for the Heinz brand’s 100th year in Canada, the recipe was featured directly on bottle labels. I failed at finding that, so thank the good Lord for Google. So, here it is in all its glory:

GREAT CANADIAN HEINZ KETCHUP CAKE Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 1½ cups packed dark brown sugar 1½ tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground ginger ½ cup Heinz Tomato Ketchup 2 eggs ½ cup water 2 tbsp red food coloring Frosting: ¾ cup butter, softened 6-oz brick-style cream cheese, softened ¾ cups butter, softened 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 cups confectioners sugar

MOM, THIS RED VELVET CAKE TASTES WEIRD. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease two, 9-inch round cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper. Stir flour with baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, nutmeg and ginger into a bowl. Stir ketchup, water and food coloring in separate bowl. Mix well and set aside. In a standing mixer, beat butter and blend in brown sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs. Add flour mixture and ketchup mixture. Beat on low, scraping the bowl as needed, until combined. Increase the speed to medium-high and beat for 1 minute. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30 minutes or until the center springs back when touched lightly. Cool cakes for 15 minutes before turning onto a rack to cool completely. Frosting: In a standing mixer, beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla on medium speed for 2 minutes, or until smooth. Gradually beat in the sugar on low, scraping the bowl as needed. Beat on high until fluffy. Frost between cake layers and over the sides and top of the cake. Makes 12 servings. For a cake recipe, this is pretty straightforward. But, since I’m no baker, I made my wife do the heavy

lifting. So, why ketchup? I have no clue. While she mixed all the ingredients, I did a little digging to try and find out why the heck Heinz had this idea in the first place. It seems one day the marketing team thought it would be a great way to celebrate by publishing a cake recipe. I did find out, though, that Campbell’s soup has published a tomato soup recipe since 1942 (which has a history of its own). Maybe this is an offshoot of that recipe? I will note here that Canadians have a special affinity for ketchup. Our northern friends consume about 3.1 kilograms of it per person, per year. That’s nearly 7 pounds. That makes me sick. Squirting out 1/2 cup of the thick condiment made me nauseous. It takes quite the constitution to get through that part of the recipe. Another awful part of this process is the 2 tablespoons of red food coloring. That’s a lot, but it keeps the batter looking more like the ketchup-red you’d see on TV and apparently keeps the cake from turning brown while it cooks. Now, I’d read online to expect something that tastes like carrot cake. That would come less from the ketchup and more from the ground ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon. So, once we popped the cake pans into the oven, the kitchen started smelling pretty nice

– something between grandma’s ginger snap cookies and Publix on a weekday afternoon. Fast-forward past icing the cake – a cinch since it’s a cream cheese base – and we’re ready to cut into it. It’s red. So red. Last time I ate a cake this red, well, let’s just say your body doesn’t absorb the food coloring. But man, it’s moist. Carrot cake? Yes. Ginger snap cookies? That’s there, too. I detect no hints of ketchup at all, and proclaim, “This is the best cake I’ve eaten in a long time!” It sure beats Duncan Hines Red Velvet from a box, but it doesn’t beat Publix’s carrot cake. We finished our pieces and took the cake around to some friends in the neighborhood. “What do you think is in it?” we asked. Many thought it was a basic red velvet. And none could believe it when we said the prime ingredient was ketchup. It was a hit, and we brought home one measly slice. Would I make it again? Yeah, man. Nothing better than bringing a cake with a slimy, secret ingredient to your friends’ parties. 5/5 stars.

Avg. salary for patrol officers was $56,130 in 2013.

Each WTC tower fell in only 12 seconds.

TO PROTECT AND SERVE, ALWAYS September 11, 2001 is a day etched in our nation’s history that many Americans won’t ever forget. Shoals resident Zach Williams, 29, is among those. With thick, black plumes of smoke billowing from the North Tower of the World Trade Center, the former Brooks High School student watched with fellow classmates, teachers, and school administrators in disbelief as the day’s events unfolded. Unfortunately, it was just the beginning of an attack on our nation, as a second plane would crash into the South Tower of the World Trade Center moments later, engulfing it in flames. Shortly after, it collapsed into a pile of rubble, sending ash into the air as far as the eye could see and blanketing everything and everyone in its path. It was in those moments following Williams knew exactly what career path he wanted to pursue. “The events that took place that day just fueled my fire even more,” said Williams, who is currently employed as an officer with the Rogersville Police Department. “Watching it, you saw all these different agencies — from police to fire to EMS — covered in ash. What was really neat was even though they were different agencies, everyone united and worked together.” Williams added he’s seen that same partnership on a local level numerous times while responding to calls. “Anytime the fire department gets called, we all go,” he said. “We’re normally always first on the scene before anyone else arrives, ready to help.” The dream to become a police officer came early for Williams. Growing up, his family was in the funeral business, which sparked his interest to specialize in homicide work. He recalls telling his parents and

ROGERSVILLE POLICE OFFICER ZACH WILLIAMS grandparents at an early age his goal of wanting to pursue law enforcement. “We were driving back from Athens one day and I remember telling them I wanted to be a cop,” he said. “So as I got older, instead of talking about it, I decided to do something about it.” Shortly after high school, Williams enrolled in the Northeast Alabama Law Enforcement Academy, located in Anniston. Upon graduation from the academy in 2010, he began work with the Sheffield Police Department, where he spent five years on the force, then joined the Rogersville team.

“It’s something new every day,” he said, referring to his career. “No call is ever the same. You definitely have to learn how to keep your composure. How you arrive at the scene a lot of the time determines how the situation ends.” Since joining the force, Williams said the biggest challenge has been getting citizens to change their opinion of police officers. “There is so much (dispute) in the media now, especially recently,” he said. “It’s a job where people hate you until they need you. You really have to learn not to hold grudges and take it personal. These days, for us, it’s about community police. You want to get out and be seen, and get out and talk to the people. It makes it much quicker for them and easier for them to call for help when they need it.” One particular program Williams said he had the opportunity to be involved with while a member of the Sheffield Police Department was the ACES program, a weeklong summer “vacation” for children. The intention of the program is to show children police officers aren’t scary and can be trusted. “A lot of the kids in the area where the program was held only saw us during bad times,” Williams said. “But during that week, the kids were able to get to know us and see what we do. It really helped them not be scared.” Without hesitation, Williams noted the most rewarding aspect of his job is being able to help people get back on the right track in life. “Anytime you can help someone get back on their feet, it’s rewarding — even if it’s finding stolen property,” he said. “It gives me a sense of pride.”

The Braves are 53-64 in week 20.

SweetSpot calls Braves one of the worst teams of 2015.

BREAKING UP IS HARD TO DO THE BRAVES ARE STRIKING OUT AND I'M TRADING TEAMS My once beloved Atlanta Braves, I remember what it felt like the moment I first walked through the gates of Turner Field as a child. The atmosphere was electric and the beauty of it left me with goosebumps. I remember sitting in my seat watching the players warm up, hearing the crack of the bats, wafting popcorn and sitting with a hotdog and Coca-Cola in tow, all decked out in red and blue. I felt butterflies in my stomach as the National Anthem began to ring across the vicinity and the game started. It was love at first sight. Like many southern families, my parents raised me to be a loyal fan to the same teams they were taught to love and cheer on as children. While the football team we may root for on Saturday night may differ, most of us in the Deep South were proud to root for the Atlanta Braves, myself included. We had many good years after that fateful summer night in Atlanta. I will always cherish the days watching games on TV in my living room, witnessing the Braves demolish any team that dared get in their way. The Tomahawk Chop became an often-hummed melody, and I even proclaimed Greg Maddux and Chipper Jones as two of my first celebrity crushes. They may be just players to you, but to me they were rock stars in well-fitted baseball pants. Things were going great, but like most relationships, we had (emphasis on HAD) our harder days. As we both grew older, we began to grow apart. I continued to cheer on the boys in red and blue, but it felt like something was wrong. The once great team that gave

IT’S OKAY TO CRY, I PROMISE. me such hope and joy began to fail me, and ulitimately our relationship ended altogether. The team went from good, to OK, to bad. When Chipper left, I was convinced we were going to hit rock bottom, and we did come close. We went from big time playoffs to barely having wins — from one of the best, to one of the worst. I understand every team has its ups and downs, but times were tough and one can only take so much. Even the memories of years ago began to fade as our management made irresponsible changes and moved our beloved team in a new direction. I mean, they traded everyone and their brother. Literally. My friends said, “Just give it hope. Hold on. It'll get better.” But it never did. I began to seriously doubt the team

I once loved and began to wonder if I should stay or go. Like others who go through baseball breakups, a new team caught my eye. As it often does, it happened on an impromptu trip and the instant chemistry could not be denied. Oh, the Nationals. The Washington Nationals and I have been having a fandom affair for the last year now, and I think it's time to officially cut ties with the old and move on to the new. The Nats have gained my loyalty and there's no going back. I traded a worn, tired, losing team for an athletic beacon of promise and hope. I traded the Tomahawk Chop for the Racing Presidents. And, let's not forget about the incredible duo that is Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper, both of which bring equal parts talent and looks

to the Nationals team. They went from stealing bases to stealing my heart. Breakups are hard, but I know we’ll both be fine. The Nat’s will probably go on to the World Series. I mean, we'll probably win while you build your new stadium to hold fans who may not be there when it’s completed. Maybe it's a phase... but probably not. All I know is I don’t want to live life with regrets. And I want to be happy. A kind of happy I haven't seen as a Braves fan in a long time. I wish you nothing but the best in baseball seasons to come. Just know it’s not you... it’s me.

Mineral "glitter" was used to enhance cave paintings.

1989-1999: 10 million lbs of glitter were manufactured.

DON’T GET MAD. GET GLAM. HOW ONE GLITTER-LADEN PRANK LED TO A LESSON ON BEY First and foremost, I would like to state for the record I am generally a levelheaded individual. Some may even describe me as a perfectly eventempered woman. Along with my even temperament and levelheadedness, I have a very healthy (and only sometimes obsessive) love for Beyoncé. Queen Bey, the Grammy-winning poster woman for feminism, just so happens to be one of my favorite people in the universe, and I tend to take all negativity towards her VERY INTENSELY. I can breeze “yo momma” comments with ease. I can brush off mean jokes, and I can forgive snarky, sarcastic comments. However, there is one truly unforgiveable sin I will never be able to overlook, and it is an insult to my bae, Bey. Much to my dear friend and UNA student Caroline Bobo’s dismay, she mistakenly committed the cardinal sin within earshot. Now, as reasonable and practical as I may seem, I could not allow Caroline to get away with this atrocity. In my search for revenge, I stumbled upon a website that could allow me to ship some God-forsaken glitter package to the doorstep of my Beyoncé-hating friend... anonymously. Perfect. Now, we all know how bothersome the excessive presence of glitter can be, much less the unexpected arrival of dynamited glitter sent via snail mail from an unidentified sender. The website, shipyourenemiesglitter. com has masterfully manufactured and marketed the 'OG Glitter Bomb' that allows its patrons to send a letter filled with tiny, microscopic shreds of iridescent plastic for the small price of $9.99. What a small price for such glamtastic revenge. This same website allows you to ship your friends bacon! Bacon! But, I wasn't rewarding Caroline in the least bit. So, with a crisp, $10 bill I simultaneously infuriated and inflicted

GLITTER IS MY FAVORITE COLOR. upon Caroline the torture of cleaning up glitter from now until eternity. Along with the OG Glitter Bomb, you can “Double the Glitter, Double the Mess” for an additional $0.88. How awesomely evil and shiny as the Beyoncé Video Music Award (VMA) performance outfit! So, of course I made sure Caroline received a double dose of the atrocious, messy glitz. It was only a matter of days before she received the glitter-laced letter and, despite the anonymity of the letter, I could not allow Caroline to sit and ponder her crime. I sat down with Caroline to address her wrongdoings. She brought along with her the letter accompanying the glitter bomb, and I have to say, the behind-the-scenes handy work is intense. The glitter in the envelope is glued around the letter, making it impossible to NOT create a mess.

She carefully thumbed under the sealed letter and BOOM. The colorful explosion enevitably took her by surprise. As stated in the eloquently penned letter, vacuuming the glitter won’t help at all, but the image of your enemy’s feeble attempt to get rid of the glitter plaguing his or her home is worth the humor. “The glitter was everywhere,” said Bobo, cringing as she recalled the memory. “Had I not realized what it was before I tore the letter open, it would have been ten times worse.” I had the pleasure of visiting the crime scene and it looked as though a glitter rainstorm had blown through the entryway of her townhouse, following her like a trail of dripping water everywhere she went. Cha-ching. Revengful success never felt so good, I thought. “When I opened the letter, I couldn’t

figure out who sent it to me, and I was worried about what I had said or done to someone that was bad enough to warrant this,” Bobo said, nervously. As so perfectly planned, I made sure she would be able to learn a lesson from her completely unnecessary and invalid comments about the goddess that is Beyoncé. “I would never wish this upon anyone,” Bobo said. “I find glitter everywhere — in my car, on my cups, in my shoes, in the shower. I cannot escape it. The glitter plague has made its way into my house and I am not sure that I will ever get it out.” So, if you're itching for revenge that's sure to stick, glitter is just the trick.

Harper Lee was born in Monroeville, Alabama.

To Kill a Mockingbird sells one million copies annually.

NEW STONE, SAME BIRD SET YOUR WATCH BACK IN TIME FOR HARPER LEE'S NEWEST BOOK

Harper Lee's newest novel “Go Set a Watchman” brought forth more controversy than any Iron Bowl Saturday ever has. At 89-years-old a frail, delicate Lee agreed to publish this novel, but was it on her own terms? Some say yes and others argue no. But her words are available to read regardless of behindthe-scenes happenings. If you enjoyed the southern staple “To Kill a Mockingbird,” you may be wondering if Lee keeps the momentum going in “Go Set a Watchman” because the world hasn't stopped talking about it.

For a quick, spoiler-free summary, the story is written as a sequel (or prequel, depending on how you look at it) to “To Kill a Mockingbird” and is set in the 1960s, when Scout returns to Maycomb, Alabama to visit from New York. “To Kill a Mockingbird” is set in Alabama in the 1930s, a time when racism ran rampant and the South was only beginning to talk about integration. But the book was published in 1960 when America was beginning to unwillingly integrate. The release of the novel caused an uproar because of one detail – a black man allegedly rapes a white girl. “To Kill a Mockingbird” took a bold stance in an unstable world. With those kind of circumstances pushing Lee’s first novel, it quickly became a national favorite and has been

deemed a flagship of southern literature. Those who have been long-time fans of the book, including me, were ecstatic for the release of “Go Set a Watchman” because “To Kill a Mockingbird” is the only book Lee ever published. In fact, Lee first wrote “Go Set a Watchman,” but the editor enjoyed the flashbacks of Scout’s childhood so much that he asked her to write a story based on that instead. So after two years and many rewrites, “To Kill A Mockingbird” was born. Now, after many years, people are beginning to wonder why she didn’t publish this book sooner. “Go Set a Watchman” was published July of this year and the reviews have not been nearly as substantial as the ones received for Lee's first publication.

“EVERY MAN’S ISLAND, JEAN LOUISE, EVERY MAN’S WATCHMAN, IS HIS CONSCIENCE."

Lee did not hit a home run with this novel. Her writing style in this story makes it blatantly obvious she was a first-time writer. Many avid readers have confessed to not being able to make it through the first few pages because of how slow the story progresses. Besides the inconsistent writing style, the character changes also made it tough to read. For example, Atticus Finch, the hero and progressive lawyer in the first book, is now seen as a segregationist and somewhat of a minor antagonist. This does come with justification, though, as both stories are written through the changing eyes of Scout. Scout is the daughter of Atticus Finch and the main protagonist of both stories. So what was her major character change? In “To Kill a Mockingbird” we see the world, and Atticus, through the eyes of a young child. A father is typically a hero to his child during that time. The difference comes almost 20 years later after Scout has grown up and moved away from her childhood home. We now see Atticus through the eyes of his 26-year-old daughter, after life experience has pulled the veil from her eyes. This sets the tone for the novel and is ultimately the plot line. Scout must learn how to deal with what she thought she knew in contrast to what she is now learning. It's a story of accepting your past as your future and vice versa. Although Lee’s style may lack something to be desired, there is much to be said about her content. If you can muster the inconsitent style and slow progression, the ending is a heartwarming piece of advice we can all learn from.

CROSSFIT IS A NEWER CRAZE THAT SHOWED UP IN 2000 AS A PHYSICAL EXERCISE PROGRAM AND COMPETITIVE SPORT. Today, there are over 10,000 boxes

(CrossFit lingo meaning ‘gyms’) in the U.S. with members and number of gyms doubling each year. So, what is CrossFit and how does one get the bod of a god? Take it from the pros: it isn’t easy. The highly physical program consists of weights and aerobic exercises. Sounds easy, huh? Not in the least bit. The phenomenon is not a specialized fitness program, according to CrossFit Defined, but a “deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of these ten recognized fitness domains: cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed coordination, agility, balance and accuracy.” Many would argue that the CrossFit physique represents the body at its peak exercising ability. It is made up of toned muscles, ripped biceps, rock-hard abs and an aura of strength and confidence. Picture Arnold Schwarzenegger in any movie where he has his shirt off. Not at all interested yet? CrossFit athletes can do daily activities with ease like carrying all the groceries into the house in one trip or climbing every flight of stairs in Bibb Graves at UNA without breaking a sweat (#realsuccess). Now you know you want to try it. I spoke with a few CrossFit enthusiasts at the Relentless Fitness box in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. “CrossFit allows your Lee Collier, a student at the University of body to be worked Tennessee, said he loves his passion for the activity and enjoys it more than any hobby. and conditioned in the “To me, the CrossFit bod represents a right places,” said Noah seasoned athlete,” said Collier. “I am most proud of bulking up in my arms and hope to continue Richardson, a Relentless getting stronger.” Fitness member. “ It CrossFit is known for its levels of high intensity. The best part is knowing I’m in shape and doing a good thing for my body.”

THE DAD BOD When you hear the word ‘dad,’ you probably think of your father or the father figure in your life. When you think of things associated with dads, what comes to mind? For me, it’s white, chunky New Balances, grills and bad jokes. Your mind probably doesn’t jump immediately to ‘dad bods,’ because, honestly, who wants to think about their dad’s body? (Dad, if you’re reading this, ya look great. Ya look real good. Kloveyoubye.)

THE DAD BOD IS A REBELLION AGAINST THE CHISELED WASHBOARD ABS. IT SAYS, “IT’S OKAY TO HAVE A LITTLE PUDGE.” INSTEAD OF GUYS SPENDING HOURS IN THE GYM AND WATCHING EVERYTHING THEY EAT, THE DAD BOD SAYS, ‘HEY, YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU GO AHEAD AND EAT THAT FIFTH SLICE OF PIZZA. NO BIGGIE.’ You may think that based on the initial description, the dad bod refers to someone who is strictly out of shape or never exercises. This is absolutely not the case. Dads, after all, should be spending time coaching little league baseball, playing catch, mowing the lawn and doing whatever else it is that dads do. If you’re in college, you should still be playing your intramural sports to stay in shape. But you shouldn’t be stressing or obsessing over it. It’s just a healthy — well — semi-healthy balance between staying active and not feeling bad about sitting on your couch all day binge-watching Netflix with a sack of Krystals by your side. So, what is the dad bod and do I already have it? I’ve been sporting the dad bod since high school (this is Samuel talking!), so I’m not new to the scene. As a self-proclaimed dad bod expert, I’m here to help. “The Odyssey” recently released an article by Mackenzie Pearson explaining why girls love dad bods. She said some girls are drawn to dad bods because it makes the guy more “human, natural and attractive.” “Unlike a guy who’s built like a Greek god, guys with a dad bod don’t intimidate girls. In addition, guys with a dad bod are better for cuddles and will definitely be down for good eats,” she wrote. Florence resident Dylan Schrader has a dad bod, and he’s dang proud of it. “Any tool can go to the gym for two hours a day,” he said. “It takes dedication to care this little.” And UNA graduate Bryan Baker tells the ladies his dad bod is what they really want. “All this time it’s been hard abs and tight butts,” he said. “Dad bods can keep you warm in the winter and shade you in the summer. Ladies, step up to the plate.” Dads have been sporting dad bods for years (obviously…), but many may be wondering what prompted the dad bod to become such a sensation among college students. I believe it has to do with the big movement toward accepting the skin you’re in. Dove launched its “Real Beauty” campaign in 2004. This campaign replaced skeletal models with real-life women to advocate for the idea that all women are beautiful no matter their shape or color. Well, come on, Dove. It’s the guys’ turn! People have begun to realize that not all guys are going to fit into the “perfect” guy stereotype and are now accepting guys as they are … gut and all. So whether you have a CrossFit bod, dad bod or something in between, be proud of your body. Love it or not, your body works hard Instead of guys spending for you everyday. It allows you to enjoy and live your life. So keep on hours in the gym and rockin’ and lovin’ your bod, because watching everything they it’s yours.

eat, the dad bod says, ‘Hey, you know what? You go ahead and eat that fifth slice of pizza. No biggie.’

The smell of cinnamon can help boost brain function.

DIY FALL SPICED CANDLE TIS’ THE SEASON FOR ALL THAT IS PUMPKIN It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Yes, forget Santa because the best season, fall, is just around the corner. Nothing makes me happier than the crisp, cool air, pumpkin everything, (especially pumpkin patches, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pie) cute boots, falling leaves, crackling fires, apple cider, sweaters, wrapping your hands around a warm mug, football...you get my point. This doit-yourself candle captures some of the most loved scents of fall wrapped into a cute, pint-sized Mason jar. This DIY is perfect for college students and young adults because it’s cheap and easy to make. Doubleboilers and other candle-making contraptions aren’t necessary. This project is conjured in a microwave. Many students already have basic spices in their cupboards and a spare Mason jar sitting around (I mean, come on...we live in the South.) And the smokeless candle wicks and flaked soy wax can be purchased at Hobby Lobby locations for those of you in Florence, Cullman and Columbia, Tennessee. What you will need: Pint-sized Mason jar Smokeless candle wicks Flaked soy wax 1 tbsp ground cinnamon *½ tbsp pumpkin pie spice ½ tbsp ground clove 1 tbsp pure vanilla extract *If pumpkin just isn’t your thing, (blasphemy) you can substitute with apple pie spice OR add a ½ tablespoon to the rest of the spices. Estimated time: 15 minutes, total, then 4-5 hours for the wax to completely harden.

LET’S GET STARTED:

Begin by preparing your workspace. Cover your area with a garbage bag to protect your table or countertops from potential spills and gather the ingredients and tools you will need. You have to act fast when dealing with fast-drying wax, so it’s good to have all ingredients handy. Step 1: Prepare and set your candle wick. Wrap the end of the wick around a wood pencil and balance the pencil on the top of the jar –– this holds the wick in place while your candle sets. Make sure the metal end of the wick rests all the way at the bottom of the jar. Once you have the correct length and position, take it out and set it aside. *Optional Step 1B: This step is not completely necessary, but hear me out before you skip to the next step. This extra step keeps the wick in place when pouring in the hot wax, saving you much anxiety later. You have two options: 1) Melt 2 tablespoons of wax, pour in the bottom of the jar, then put

PUMPKIN SPICE AND EVERYTHING NICE. your wick back into place or 2) using a hot glue gun, put a dab of hot glue on the metal bottom of the candle wick and then place back in the jar. Step 2: Now it’s time to melt the wax. You will need 2 cups of melted wax (more or less, depending on where you want the wax to reach the top of the jar) for a pint-sized Mason jar. Start by microwaving 1 cup of flaked soy wax for 2 minutes. Add another cup of wax to the container and microwave in 1 minute intervals until it is all melted. Using the wooden spoon or skewer, stir every so often to help the wax melt evenly. When the wax is completely melted, add the spices and vanilla extract, mixing well with your wooden spoon or skewer. Microwave for one minute or until everything is melted and spices are beginning to blend together nicely.

Step 3: Slowly pour the wax mixture into the jar, adjusting your wick if it moves during the pouring (it should not move much if you secured it earlier with the extra step.) Allow the candle to set for 4-5 hours. I enjoyed seeing the specks of spice in the wax settling in different ways as the wax dried. All that’s left to do is light the candle and enjoy. Or keep the southern motif and gift it to a fellow fall-loving friend. For an added pop of color, tie a cute ribbon around the rim to finish the look. *Bonus idea: Pour wax into empty Scentsy wax containers to create cubes for your favorite burner.

Prior to 2015, Columbia had virtually no live music scene.

Columbia, TN is the mule capital of the world.

MUSICFEST RISING GET YOUR KICKS AT THE INAUGURAL MULETOWN MUSICFEST When you think of music festivals, the big events like Bonnaroo, Burning Man and Coachella are often the first to come to mind. It’s very easy to overlook the equally unique, smaller festivals springing up all over the country. One such festival is kicking off its first year this fall in Columbia, Tennessee. The Muletown Musicfest will be held Oct. 2-3 with free and ticketed events occurring across downtown. This festival was born out of a desire by local business owners to celebrate Maury County and bring attention to the wide range of restaurants, shops and venues in Columbia’s downtown. Local music producer Rick Clark initially pitched the event as a replacement for the city’s Southern Fried Festival and said he had no trouble finding support. He felt putting the festival’s emphasis on music would not only draw in locals, but tourists as well. Instead of temporary, outdoor stages typically associated with music festivals, this event is taking a different approach by making use of the three existing music venues downtown: Westbury House, Puckett’s Upstairs and Venue Tenn Upstairs. Local business owner Joel Friddell, who has helped organize the festival, feels putting on this event will benefit Columbia’s downtown in the long run.

HUMMING HOUSE “If we have done the job right, the streets will be filled with music, people and excitement,” he said. “I hope that it will add to the growing sense of pride for Maury County and perhaps act as a catalyst for more creative, collaborative events to come. We all see this as year one and are looking to see the Muletown Musicfest to continue for many more.” From 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 3 there will be more than 30 musical acts playing in downtown. A majority of the events will be free to hear inside various local businesses and outside on the street as well. Seeing headlining acts Saturday will require buying a $30 wristband that gets you into all three of downtown’s music venues. There’s also a special VIP performance by Tim Akers & The Smoking Section the night of Oct. 2. Many of the headlining acts mix several genres, and most band members reside in Tennessee. The self-described “southern roots” band 18 South even takes its name from

a neighboring, northern city street – Nashville. Their performance will include a special guest appearance by John Oates (of the famous musical duo Hall & Oates). The five piece group Humming House is also from Nashville, and they create a catchy blend of folk, pop, and bluegrass that evokes the old as well as the new. Interested in the lineup so far? It gets better. Musician and producer Phil Madeira has made a career of playing with a multitude of famous artists including The Civil Wars, Garth Brooks and Old Crow Medicine Show. His “Mercyland” project gives him a chance to showcase his own talents and bring a touch of gospel flavor to the festival. The event will also include special guests of its own including acclaimed Christian songwriter Cindy Morgan and David Mansfield, whose extensive resume includes numerous film soundtracks along with participation in Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Other performers you shouldn’t

miss include singer-songwriters Parker Millsap, Casey Wasner, Peter Cooper, and Dillon Hodges with his band, firekid. With so much planned for Muletown’s inaugural festival, it’s going to be exciting to see how it’s received by both locals and visitors. If this year is a success, there’s no telling how big it could become. Friddell said he is very excited about the town coming together and is very hopeful for the future. “Now, rather than a sort of “circus comes to town event”, we have an event where you can come back to Columbia a couple of weeks later and still hear music at those same venues, enjoy local food and have a similar experience even without a festival,” he said.

The best banjoist alive is Fred van Eps.

The banjo was developed by African slaves in America.

PICKIN’ AND GRINNIN’ THOU SHALL NOT JUDGE, UNLESS IT’S AT THE FIDDLER’S CONVENTION Leaves will soon be changing and the hot, humid conditions of a typical Alabama summer will be a thing of the past as cooler temperatures begin to take over. For those who enjoy the toe-tapping, bluegrass acoustics of a fiddle and banjo, the change is a sign the annual Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention in historic Athens, Alabama is near. Weston Stewart, an Anderson resident, can’t wait to pick those thin, high-pitched strings during the event. After all, it’s where he found his love for music and banjos. Stewart, 25, has been a regular at the two-day event for over a decade. At the age of 10, he encountered his first banjo picker at the festival, spawning a hobby and hopeful lifelong interest he never imagined. “When I saw the banjos and heard them I told my parents that’s what I wanted to play,” he said. “It’s what got me started.” After much begging and persuasion, Stewart’s mother finally gave in and purchased her son his first banjo at age 13. Since then, he’s made quite the name for himself, winning 18 state titles, including being crowned the banjo champion of the 2010 and 2011 Old Time Fiddlers Convention. In addition, he is a two-time Bobby Thompson Bluegrass Champion at Uncle Dave Macon Days in Mufreesboro, Tennessee. He, too, holds a title from the Merlfest Banjo Contest in Wilkesboro, North Carolina and a National Bluegrass Banjo Championship title from the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas. In all, Stewart has won more than 50 banjo competitions since he began

competing. He credits Scooter Muse, a wellknown Tennessee Valley musician for his success. “Shortly after I got my banjo I started taking lessons from Scooter,” Stewart said. “After two years, he told me he had nothing else to show me and told my mom that I had a special talent with music. He’s the one that encouraged me to start entering competitions.” In 2009, Stewart began a new musical endeavor, becoming a member of The South Pickers — a bluegrass group on Tom T. and Dixie Hall’s Blue Circle Label. He now performs with the Ricky Reece Band based out of Nashville. While nowadays he doesn’t compete as often as he used to, Stewart still stays involved in the various festivals throughout the year as a judge. This will be his first time to do so at the Fiddlers Convention. “It will be different and a bit of a change for me, but I’m definitely looking forward to it,” he said. “It’s an honor to be able to do it. I’ve worked hard at playing music from the time I’ve started, so I feel I have enough experience participating in contests to judge appropriately.” Stewart added his favorite part of attending the well-known event on the campus of Athens State University is its atmosphere. “I always loved playing as a contestant, but I think I’ll love it more now that I can relax and enjoy being there to hear all the musicians,” he said. “It’s great to see old friends and getting to jam with others, too.” The 49th annual event, which is known as the “Granddaddy of Midsouth Fiddlers Conventions”,

WESTON STEWART SHOWS HIS SKILLS IN A BANJO COMPETITION. kicks off Friday, Oct. 2 with old-time music jams and contests, impromptu clogging sessions, fried festival foods, and an arts-and-crafts fair. The event will continue through Saturday, Oct. 3 when a Fiddle Champion is crowned later that night. Historically, the convention has attracted more than 15,000 people for the two-day event, with more than 200 musicians participating for top prize money in 18 of the different categories of the musical competition. Last year, the convention became home to the Alabama State Fiddle Champion competition. In 2013 it became the home the home to the Alabama State Champion categories including harmonica, bluegrass banjo,

dulcimer, old-time banjo, classic oldtime fiddler, buck dancing, mandolin, dobro, old-time singing, guitar-finger picking, guitar-flat picking, bluegrass band, and bluegrass old-time band. The Fiddlers Convention is the largest fundraising event of the year by the Athens State University Foundation, and is also one of the largest tourism events in north Alabama. Admission to the event is $8 for Friday, $10 for Saturday, and $15 for both days. Children ages 12-andunder are admitted free with a parent.
