UNDER THE FLOORBOARDS 12 local artist profiles

WINTER 2014

From the Executive Director Each year in our annual report we tell you all about our year; what we have done and what we are trying to do. We are really speaking about ourselves. This year, we have decided to add something different. This year, we have decided to let others contribute to our story. It has been made possible by the Under the Floorboards project. Over the year, 12 artists have each spent a month working in a different part of the agency. They have then each depicted their experience through works of art. We have had photographers, filmmakers, painters, sculptors, ceramicists and even a playwright. The idea of the project is not only to tell our story, but the stories of the people for whom we exist. During the Under the Floorboards project, the artists have had a good look at most of the things we do. The opportunity arose then to tell our story through their eyes. I hope you like what we have done.

As usual it has been an eventful year. At a Board level we said farewell to Marie Harris after 9 years and our Treasurer Robert Short after 3. Our Welfare manager Maree Drennan left in her 15th year. A special thanks to all of them, they will be sadly missed. For myself, I spent three months of the year traveling through Europe with my family on long service leave. After 15 years it was about time the agency had a break from me. A special thanks to our Deputy Director Sue Adam who filled in during my absence. The agency has continued to receive strong community support and during the year we received significant bequests from both William Patching and Gladys May Brown. UnitingCare Ballarat has a lot on its plate and such support makes an enormous difference to what we can achieve. We ask all of you to at least think about setting aside a small portion of your estate in your wills to enable us to help others.

After struggling to find a solution at Sunways, we have developed a plan to turn the 34 bed sit units into 18 one bedroom units for older people. This will enable the facility to operate on a viable basis as well as providing 18 older people with much needed affordable accommodation. We have been looking at how we better respond to our many clients that come to us suffering with mental illness. Many of these have been victims of early childhood trauma and so the entire agency has been undergoing training in Trauma Informed Care to enable us to better respond in these situations. We have also trialled Equine Therapy at Tabor House and look to develop these types of responses further. We also had a major reshuffle of our management team. Each year it seems there are greater demands on the administration of our organisation. There are increasing demands on quality, risk management, financial reporting and contract compliance. The

managers and I got together and shuffled around all the roles, better matching the skills and gifts of each manager to the tasks at hand. We think we have come up with a better structure to face the challenges before us. The year ahead bristles with challenges. For the first time all our Drug and Alcohol services and most of our homelessness services will be up for tender in a major re-commissioning of government services. They are big challenges but I am sure we will respond to them. A special thanks to our Brian and the Board for their diligence and care. Thanks also to our wonderful staff, volunteers and managers who make everything possible, and thanks also to Susan my assistant who even manages to keep me on track.
