We want to embark on a broader restructuring of the electricity sector and strive to achieve a more systematic development of power market design especially for the renewable energy. To do that, we need a framework that brings together all stakeholders towards ensuring that renewable energy becomes a real engine of growth for the Nigerian economy.

The world is on the move and the issue of climate change is not something of guess work. It is a reality and nations are moving at very fast pace; let us not allow ourselves and our nation to be outpaced. Let's take appropriate and immediate measures to ensure we are moving along with time because while we talk about the devastations caused by climate change we should also know there are opportunities that abound. These opportunities have the potentials to create jobs for increased economic activities and to increase how long we live on earth.

There is no gainsaying, there will be some changes in climate that cannot be avoided due to past and inevitable future global emissions, but the detrimental effects can be avoided if we can reduce greenhouse gases emission to an acceptable level. Therefore, we must move beyond thinking about climate change and global warming, to take action as a nation.

This is a platform for both public and private sector to engage in global green economy while simultaneously communicating to the entire nation and the world, Nigeria's preparedness to take Nigeria Climate Change Investment Initiative leadership of green economy in Africa.
W
ith climate change and fast depleting global environment, nations all over the world are courageously engaging sustainable solutions to address this greatly demanding world. The need to build a harmonious relationship between mankind and the environment, vis-à-vis the new global climate change challenges has never been so urgent. Climate Change Action agenda therefore becomes a theme that redefines the world: our economy, our relationships, - our lives. The landmark 2015 Paris Conference of the Parties 21 (COP 21) on climate change instigated new direction to global Climate Change Action. Incentivizing action for climate change activities and integrating sustainable development for developing country Parties is a major pathway for this new direction. A year after in 2016, at Morocco Conference (COP 22), the mandate for actioning the provisions of the Paris Agreement was unleased; transforming the Intended Nationally Determined Contributions to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).
The Paris Agreement emphasized the principle of equity and common but differentiated responsibilities and respective capabilities in light of climate change; providing the platform for developing country Parties to access funding and technology support for climate change mitig atio n an d ad ap tatio n . Tw o majo r commitments in the Agreement are instructive for climate change investment: Paragraph 115 “ … developed country Parties are required to scale up their level of financial support to raise USD 100 billion annually to 2020 for mitigation and adaptation, and to further significantly increase adaptation finance from current levels and provide appropriate technology and capacity-building support” Integrated, holistic non-market approaches to assist INDC (now NDC) in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, mitigation, adaptation, finance, technology and capacity building (Article 6) What does this mean to Nigeria as a developing country Party to the Agreement? NIGERIA CLIMATE CHANGE INITIATIVE (NCCII) is a deliberate effort at addressing this inquiry.

Nigeria Climate Change Investment Initiative NCCII aims at addressing the information and capacity gap in accessing global climate change funding and technology support. It would facilitate actions leading to innovative approaches to sustainable development through environmental and economic strategy integration. By facilitating a blend of the implementation strategies of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Economic Recovery & Growth Plan (ERGP), NCCII projects for multiple deliverables: Nigeria's economic recovery and growth agenda; emission reduction targets; and climate change mitigation and adaptation. Nigeria Climate Change Investment Forum 2017 (NCCIF 2017) is the launch pad for Nigeria Climate Change Investment Initiative. Paragraphs 118, 124 and 135 of the Paris Agreement provides policy support for this initiative. The Agreement directs for engagement of international cooperation and international organizations for facilitation of regular and meaningful opportunities for climate change initiatives, as well as engaging civil societies, private sectors, financial institutions, cities and subnational authorities to contribute, scale-up efforts and support for Climate Change. The theme: “Accessing Funding and Foreign Direct Investment in Green Economy: Processes, Partnerships and Projects” communicates the objective of the forum as a platform for exploring the processes for
attracting and accessing climate change investment and for developing partnerships leading to actionable projects in green economy. This is a platform for both public and private sector to engage in global green economy while simultaneously communicating to the entire nation and the world, Nigeria's preparedness to take leadership of green economy in Africa.
Let’s come together and ensure that NCCIF 2017 is a win-win cooperation for a better future through financing for climate change human-centred development, scientific and technological innovation and development diversity.

N
iger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) was incorporated with a mandate to address the challenges of insuďŹƒcient power in Nigeria by building independent power stations across the nation. NDPHC did not stop at building independent power stations to grid connection but expanded its portfolio to provide power through solar to rural communities. Mr. Chiedu Ugbo, NDPHC Managing Director /CEO noted that about 70 million Nigerians in rural communities are not connected to the grid and so are unable to access electricity. This informed the decision to extend power to the rural communities which would in the process stimulate social and economic activities in the communities not located on the grid.
NDPHC adopted a community-based approach that will allow the rural low-income dwellers an opportunity to participate in this project. This approach allows a monthly payment for energy and also acquisition of the SHS unit after a certain period of time. Nigeria Climate Change Investment Forum

XINFIN Foundation is a non-profit organization which liaises with different international governments in order to reduce the existing gap in global infrastructure. The lack of government sponsored financing hinders the possibility of many infrastructure projects around the globe. The Africa Community Manager, Afrikanus Kofi Akosah Adusei was quoted in the releases stating, “Infrastructure deficit in Africa is over 90 Billion dollars annually, and it has a lot to do with inefficiencies in trade and finance practices. Also, the fact that global trade and financing is still a loosely connected process tied to several risks. XinFin’s XDC token is a community driven digital asset designed to hedge risks in global trade and finance. Our upcoming TradeFinex platform will see a great participation from businesses in Africa.”

T
he word "crisis" is composed of two characters, one representing danger and the other, opportunity. Climate change in the midst of the environmental crisis presented through its impact also offer huge opportunities that should be grasped to attract vast capital flows into low-carbon investments, create jobs and spur economic growth. According to Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, “Climate change provides one of the biggest opportunities in the history of the world”. Putting a price on carbon is a cost-effective way of getting investments in the direction towards a green economy pathway.
With the adoption of the Paris Agreement, The world is committed to limit global warming to 2°C above pre-industrial levels, with a stretch target of 1.5°C. This global consensus to combat climate change includes ensuring that financial flows are consistent with the 2-degree target. Meeting this target requires a global effort to shift capital from carbon-intensive to low-carbon investments. This now establishes a new set of global development goals to meet the immense challenges of creating jobs, sustaining growth and eradicating poverty in a carbonconstrained world that demands a restructuring of several emission activity systems and a deeper appreciation of the boundaries of our ecological systems.

One of Nigeria's engagements in climate change is inextricably linked to her pressing energy needs. In Nigeria, unequal access to energy has reinforced the wider inequalities linked to poverty, gender and the rural-urban divide that have accompanied her economic growth past years. Nigeria is experiencing severe and damaging impacts from climate change. So great are the energy challenges and so severe the climate risks that it is easy to lose sight of the opportunities. And these opportunities are considerable. They are part of a fundamentally different narrative that is emerging in Nigeria. Climate change imperative therefore poses an opportunity for Nigeria to fastforward use of clean energy, avoiding decades of inefficient spending on polluting energy sources. The climate opportunity provides for Nigeria to raise her level of ambition, revisit energy policies and create an environment for dynamic energy entrepreneurs to thrive.
Whilst acknowledging that Nigeria will still need fossil fuels for some time, it is important to recognise that the country's huge potential to develop renewable energy sources could allow her leapfrog over dependence on high-carbon fuels. Climate opportunities attracts innovative ways to access private finance and more investment in Nigeria's infrastructure, banking competition, mobile technology and financial products that could help the Nigerian government fund critical infrastructure including new capacity for generating power. By harnessing these climate opportunities, Nigeria will be ushered into a new energy era with climate narrative as clearly articulated within her national policies, bi-lateral and multilateral agreements. When this happens, Nigeria will be well placed to chart her transition to cleaner energy and her counterparts in the global green energy revolution.
