Dwarfing Other Deer Moose are the deer family’s largest species. These enormous animals can weigh as much as 1,300 pounds (590 kilograms). Males are usually heavier than females. On average, a moose is about 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3 meters) long, and it stands about 7 feet (2 m) tall at the shoulder. Adult moose usually have dark fur, ranging from grayish brown to almost black. They have slightly lighter coloring on their legs and muzzle. On rare occasions, a moose might be covered in white fur. All moose have large heads with long faces. Most also have a loose flap of skin called a bell that hangs down from their neck. Like other deer species, male moose grow bony structures called antlers from the top of their head. A moose’s antlers are larger than those of any other animal. They are mostly wide and flat, with pointed tips.

Male moose 7 ft. (2 m) tall at shoulder

Adult male 6 ft. (1.8 m)

10 ft. (3 m) long

A moose’s bell and wide, flat antlers set it apart from other deer. 8

MAKING THE JOURNEY

H

igh-speed trains come in many shapes and sizes. Some cover routes that are hundreds of miles long, and others travel only a short distance before reaching their destination. Some travel at a speed of several hundred miles per hour, while others zip along at 150 miles (241 km) per hour or less. But the people who work on these trains all share some things in common: attention to safety and efficiency, thorough maintenance of their trains, and care for the needs of the millions of passengers who travel on their trains every year. The trains themselves may be in a hurry to get you where you need to go, but the many workers who operate and serve on them take their time making sure every journey is safe, comfortable, and efficient. Let’s take a ride on a high-speed train. All aboard!

What If We Didn’t Have Soap?

I

magine a world without soap. We would have to wash ourselves with water alone, and water is not that efficient at cleaning. We would have to learn to live with a lot more dirt in our lives. Germs would spread more easily from person to person, and from our hands to the food we eat, causing more sickness. Harmful bacteria would find a home in our clothing, towels, sheets, blankets, and on our less-than-clean kitchen surfaces, dishes, mugs, and chopping boards. In short, without soap we’d be a lot less healthy. Yet soap hasn’t always existed. And even after soap was invented, not all civilizations used it. People found other ways to keep clean.

Strigil

GRUBBY GREEKS. The ancient Greeks bathed but did not use soap. They cleaned their bodies with blocks of clay, sand, pumice, and ashes, then covered themselves with perfumed oil. They scraped off the oil and dirt with a metal implement called a strigil.

• You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Clocks and Calendars!: The idea of a seven-day week came about from Jewish tradition: the Bible tells us how God created the world in six days and then rested on the Sabbath (seventh day).

I keep thinking about what we’re stomping in.

• You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Money!: In his later years, the great English scientist Sir Isaac Newton became obsessed with tracking down counterfeiters. The penalty for counterfeiting was death by hanging.

• You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Plastic!: One of the strangest plastics is shellac. It comes from an insect called a lac bug.

CLEANING WITH URINE. The Romans cleaned clothing by soaking it in a mixture of urine and water (above). Ammonia in the urine lifted the dirt off the clothing. Urinals were placed on street corners so that urine could be collected for this purpose.

VICTORIAN HAIR WASH. In the 19th century, before the invention of shampoo, people washed their hair in many unusual substances, including lemon juice, black tea, rosemary, and egg yolks.

• You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Soap!: The ancient Romans really appreciated sparkling white clothes. To get them nice and clean, they used human urine, donated by passersby.

SMOKE CLEANING. The Himba people of Namibia don’t wash with water, because it’s so scarce there. Instead, they sit in a room filled with incense smoke until they sweat, then rub themselves with butterfat and scented ocher to give their bodies a reddish glow.

• You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without Writing!: Ancient Egyptian scribes were seen as very important people and often paid very well, because most ancient Egyptians could not read and write.

THE DRAMA CONTINUES President Kennedy died almost immediately after being shot on November 22, 1963. But in many ways, the shooting itself was only the beginning of the saga. As a grieving public struggled with the shock of the president’s death, new events transpired that were so dramatic as to defy believability.

Jack Ruby (center) was among the crowd at the Dallas police station on November 22, after President Kennedy’s assassination. Newspapers across the country announced the president’s death.

A Man Named Ruby Following the assassination, schools and businesses were closed, flags were flown at half-staff, and religious services were held. Even Kennedy’s biggest critics were taken by a sense of loss and regret. One Texas man who had voted for Richard Nixon, Kennedy’s opponent in the 1960 presidential election, said, “I wanted him out of office, but not this way.”1 As for Kennedy’s supporters and admirers, most were struck with feelings of confusion, despair, and, in some cases, rage. One example of the latter was a Dallas businessman named Jack Ruby.
