THE SEED OF TIME House-Museum 2013-15 ALTAMURA (IT)
I wish that the memories of our family will remain forever vivid throughout the skin of the house where they were generated. Visible to this and future generations. Dedicated to my family and King Crimson
THE SEED OF TIME The Father of the Kingdom Loos has led with radiant crown While horse sets free and flies serene he spreads around his bless The stones are red and placed in pairs the castle rises strong Not all are fair and one is there to put on him its spell The King has fallen down the stairs of golden sycamore He sleeps and fails to face himself inside perpetual dream The gate is sealed and keys are lost locked eyes for evermore None would dare none could help the tune is dark and keen The queen has shown her hope and shared her will to take the lead She wants his King to rise again so prays her son to search The spell grows strong the horseman wrong to look outside the walls No man can find the poison tree the march of fall has set The mighty heart from stone is made and heavy on his chest He carries all the pain and fear of all the kingdom Loos The prince has cleared his father’s plan and runs to find the truth His hand he plunges flaming heart explodes and fades his soul The prince is gone has lost his form as dust reveals himself He’s saved his King and protects him with all his strong embrace The stones are red the fortress shines the king be proud again The spirit scares whom heart is fierce the spirit spreads and gently cares Giacomo Garziano

THE SEED OF TIME According to C.G. Jung an important theme of alchemy is “ The renewal of the King”. It describes the conversion of the king from an imperfect state, to heal and become a perfect, whole and incorruptible being. Psychologically the King was a symbol of awareness and of the dominant spiritual and religious notion in a culture. The union of Rex (Sol = Sun ) and Regina (Luna = Moon) signifies the union of the day principle, symbol of the light-filled consciousness with the night light, symbol of the unconscious. On an individual level, it initially leads to a resolution of ego consciousness and thus disorientation, but then to a new birth, a renewed awareness. The renewed consciousness does not contain the unconscious, but forms with it a wholeness that is symbolized by the Son. The design process for my family’s house started following an intuition, that developed over time taking the form we can see now. During the evolution of the project a transformation, like the renewal of the king, has occurred in me. One of the major catalysts has been the album “In the Court of the Crimson King” by King Crimson, inhabiting my subconsciousness unravelling itself through catharsis in this project. This refurbishment project is composed by two parts: an exterior one called Gentle Genius, an interior one called the Infection. These two parts correspond to two different movements: the observation enabling protection from the outside, the action enabling the curing potential from inside. Together they form The Seed of Time, the union of conscious and unconscious. The foundations of the current edifice are built on large stones that according to ancient maps could belong to the bottom of a tower from the time of Turkish domination. At the beginning I imagined to restore the building giving it a coherent fortress-like look again. Whilst the tower took shape in my imagination, a castle emerged in which the King had trapped himself, overwhelmed by his fears, his dark side, prone to decay and death, the Nigredo. The court where tension, resignation and sacrifice evolved into hope, rebirth, the project itself. The walls of the tower are built out of prismatic stones, each of them representing an event of the family inhabiting the tower. In some parts the surface appears flat, more
calm, representing the quietness and the joy the family has experienced. In others the surface is more chaotic, revealing the intensity of some specific dramatic moments. The sequence of extreme joy and deep sadness which belongs to the album. The sequence of the diverse states of the characters inhabiting the court of the Crimson King. The shiny finishing of the facade reflects the sky appearing blue as one approaches the building and looks at it from below. The red and the blue are the dominant colors of the album cover, as much as the musical content of it: red as feeling of rage, madness and passion, and blue as feeling of loneliness, quietness and sadness. The King and the Queen, the red and the blue merge within the surface. The multifaceted facade replicates this effect, manifesting itself in a range of forms and states based on its interaction with light and the emotional condition of the viewer. Like the album evokes and augments the current state of mind of the listener. The exterior carries the story of the king and serves as protective shield allowing a generative action to take place on the inside, to purify and heal the interior of the tower where he resides, to nullify the echoes in the void inner spaces. New life enters the wounds, to restore, to create a new positive condition and cure the king. The growing white plant gives birth to stars that form the constellations of a new sky. The frozen image of a starry night acts like a clock, a landmark of a new age. Colorful branches of the tree are planets orbiting in this new universe and, like magic fruits, feed the positive emotions of the inhabitants. The experience of the sentiments contained in the king’s journey, the reflection upon them, the process of acceptance of the past, have made space for something new. They have generated a sentiment of hope, a willingness to change, they have prepared the soil to heal. The Seed of Time was always present, it has been unveiled during the catharsis of the creation of Gentle Genius and the curative actions of the Infection. The son out of the union of king and queen is born, the moonchild. It manifests itself showing the constellations of a new era, revealing a new bright Hyperuranion.

GENTLE GENIUS The city and its various parts can be seen as a music score, the edifices acting as notes played by different instruments simultaneously. A melody is created by, what the Romans used to call Genius Loci, the spirit of the place, the conductor of the city. Historic centres usually have a clear, harmonious melody, but oftentimes the soundscapes of the outer layers of a city are disrupted, lacking a conductor able to integrate architectonic interventions throughout space and time. Notes follow each other without a scheme, unbalanced, creating feelings of abandon and indifference. Gentle Genius is born in such environment, aiming to generate awareness of the critical current condition. It sets a new key in the urban music score, recovering a deep note lost in time, reinventing local instruments to manifest as a sound from the future, allowing the Genius Loci to compose new music again. The Genius Loci of the area, after decades of abandon, has finally arisen from its sleep. The facade starts to vibrate and due to its structure creates an ever moving surface. The red represents the strength of the genius. Red has the longest wave length of the visible spectrum and can be associated with the longest sound-waves that rather than touching our ears are felt in the torso. Hence it touches the instincts of the viewer, it is not linear, it is multifaceted perception that reaches out from the walls, transforming a residential building into a sculpture. The dormant feelings in the subconscious of the viewer are awakened and stirred augmenting the intensity of the predominant emotion, acting like a mirror. The spirit has found a place to emerge again, he shakes and touches those that are outside and protects and shelters those that have welcomed him.

THE INFECTION When a body is sick it changes equilibrium, any method applied to cure it is actually perceived by the body as causing an imbalance initially, as an infection itself. This project seeks to generate new life, recreate a positive equilibrium, in a long abandoned space. Based on the Voronoi diagram, the furniture spreads its cells along the walls of the apartment embracing and purifying the entire space. This 2 rooms apartment is the first floor of a old complex built in the 50’s, made of typical local tuff stone. The young owners wanted to improve the quality of the space exploiting the beautiful 4 meters high vaulted ceiling by adding a mezzanine for the more private space of their bedroom. The idea was to make the space as neat as possible, improving technologically installations and energy saving and add character by creating a complex system of furniture embedded in the apartment. A generative pattern made out of cells grows along the wall as a new plant, embracing the space. This system contains all the functions (storage, bookshelves, pantry, closet, wardrobe) of the house and improves acoustic performances.

THE SEED OF TIME
Date | october 2015 Program | opening event - immersive performance Location | Altamura (IT) Organizer | Elephants & Volcanoes

THE SEED OF TIME A seed, as it grows, impacts and alters the environment around it. It begins a process of growth that, through the very nature of the seed, bridges the past and the future. The metaphor of the seed serves as the point of departure for an event that emerges out of a building that has been healed and protected by architectonic interventions; a building that holds within itself its past and future iterations simultaneously; a building that wants to alter and affect its enviornment. Just as seeds disperse themselves on the wind, The Seed of Time spreads the concepts inherent to the design process on an urban scale and extends them out to other artistic disciplines and movements. Taking the form of an immersive experience, the event, through the use of different media, aims to stimulate all the senses. Visitors will be guided through the sculptural space, moving from the exterior of the building into the interior. Culinary interventions, dance performances, light and sound effects, video projections, and costumes will transport the visitor into a parallel reality where the past, present, and future are merged to alter perception and open new pathways of perspective. Following the event, there will be an exhibition which will include information about the results of the project, access to the performance space, and documentation of the event itself. This interdisciplinary and multi-sensorial intervention aims for a change in consciousness through the act of creating and presenting novel forms of experience. Through a range of sensorial stimulations, the project as a whole aspires to generate awareness of our surroundings and the body on both macro and micro levels; reconnecting the visitors and participants with their own sense of self, with their own innate equilibrium. The project starts from the point of architecture, but through the participatory performance it provides different ways of seeing, extending ideas of other concepts; of ways of being, of ways of living, of ways of thinking.

“
I CALL ARCHITECTURE FROZEN MUSIC
“
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Architecture and music have always been my main interests. During my personal investigation of design approaches I came to realize how close these two forms of expression are. Main concepts in one field, assume significant meaning within the other: form, structure, rhythm, tone and so on. Music, as sequences of sound and silence, embodies my vision of Architecture: harmonic sequences of full and empty, closed volumes and open spaces, light and shadow, evolving in a continuous loop. Both fields have the capacity to stimulate all five senses in a Copernican way, the human being the center point. Giacomo Garziano
GG-loop is an architectural practice established 2014 in Amsterdam by Giacomo Garziano. The offices works within an international network, deriving its strength from an interdisciplinary approach. We work on different scales, ranging from urban planning to industrial design. GG-loop is also involved in art projects, such as video installations, digital sculpture and music performances, embracing various creative fields. We believe that architecture, as answer to a spatial demand, cannot be merely functional. Every space needs to tell a story. This story acts as filter between functional request and creative intuition. Our main goal in the design process is to create a unique question, based on the analysis of context, necessities, possibilities and constraints. This question will create a unique answer, that will create another unique question, that will create another unique answer, a loop. Creativity, technical solutions and financial facts are fed into this loop, to finally obtain an answer that equally satisfies all the questions coherently, producing noble architecture. A good architect for us is a scientist, able to arrange components in harmonious proportions creating a totally new element, a composer enabling the orchestra to perform his piece in the best way.
