Myanmar

01 Thousand Pagoda Myanmar, Inle lake Vernacular Deviation Academic INDA A freshwater lake located in the Nyaungshwe Township of Taunggyi District of Shan State, part of Shan Hills in Myanmar. It is the second-largest lake in Myanmar. The watershed area for the lake lies to a large extent to the north and west of the lake. The lake drains through the Nam Pilu or Balu Chaung on its southern end. There is also a hot spring on its northwestern shore. Ironically, the way of living can be an answer for most of the people who live in the city, Myanmar has such a poor water drainage system. The unique idea of this place and community is their vernacular and the whole system of how they live within such a landscape. The whole town was literally on the waterbody and yet agriculture transportation, basic elements of the town is exist with this second largest lake natural. The resolve they have is not to use so much of the innovation sort of an idea but to live within nature so the answer is nature itself. The core idea behind the whole town is mostly the water plant, water hyacinth. It is very troublesome for the other area of the world but in this place, everything comes from the potential of this plant.

It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but one most responsive to chsange. - Charles Darwin, 1809

Characteristics of components and elements of vernacular architecture make the unique that deal with the current condition of atmosphere and habit of people. The surface of the wall made of a weaving system make the wall become breathable, make the wall dry faster after the rain, and allow the light in a comfortable amount come in during the day time.t

The original form of the house is entirely made of bamboo which is imported from Nyaungshwe Township the only connection between the people and the outside world; trade and tourist which make the community contaminate with the modern world and apply to the house. Bring more of the standard material and design approach from the city.

Myanmar facing the flooding problem every single year and continue to getting worst. Mon State, Myanmar is a very good example of such a problem. The area surround is mostly a water body that does not even talk about raining the flooding can occur just the water level rising in the time. As a thought of flooding problem the address of flooding strategy and a key to ‘completely resistance’ consider of the flooding time. To improve life quality and also a fast exit for the condition that deals with the output of bad management in many things. Floating is a good idea to deal with flooding to avoid every single problem at once. The dynamic of floating garden apply to space and become an extra room which allows people to have a dry and livable space during a flooding season. The flooding problem is one of the major concerns in Myanmar and becomes even harder to deal with when the source of the problem is a root in the management of the city plan to the bad sewage system, green area, people’s behavior. Anyway, the highlighted area shows how serious each facing the flooding problem.

With only two ways of income, Intha people lack sufficient money to build a proper house in terms of interior space. Most of the houses have free space inside and use a cabinet and shelf as a wall element to divide the free and use specific furniture to identify each. But still some of the houses really small so they can’t have a sub-division of space inside so the whole house is one single space and furniture hang or place at the surrounding when to change the room just take the furniture to make a specific identity of the room.

For floating room to being able to reflect the town’s visual identities or to blend in to localize the piece of architecture. The room adapts in-term of construction, design, materiality, space usage which is set as a rule of approach as a connection from the house, fixed structure, room or floating part, and infrastructure that should support living during flooding. The floating room uses the strategy from the floating garden in Inle lake, the floating element as a base keeps everything in need floating above the water level, and at the same time, the fixed structure keeps the floating part follow the dynamic of the rising water level. Infrastructure as clean water, alternative electric, storage can be applied along the main column which works as a fixed structure to keep floating room connect directly to the house.

As a township that close to a lot of the natural water resources combine with bad sewage system management make the town hit the top chart of the flooding town. However, the situation takes place from the beginning of July to late September. Condition of climate leads to the prediction that every related-aspect with the flooding is rising up and can get worst in the future. The idea of moving to the high ground might not be an answer for the next ten years.

As an escape from the major problem in most areas of Myanmar instead of the stop has a place or space to use during such time is important. Not living on the roof nor move to the other place. Aspect from the place that settles on top of the water body in the first place and use those aspects to make an available place during flooding seasons.

Application form floating strategy on a bigger scale with more relevant to the town of mon state, the worst area for flooding problem in Myanmar, yet become routine in every single year between July to September. As the same escape plan during the mentioned period into one block of the building shall provide a more coherent compound. As an image reflection in Myanmar, most of the house approaches are being adapted flexibly according to the sufficient material and design. As some of the houses in the town still remain very local and primitive such as bamboo of timber and even stilt. On the other hand, some the house has an approach follow from the colonization from others but still have some element like a corrugated metal sheet which the result of the adaptation of said keep what they have and doing what they like.

02 Totem and Taboo Thailand, Kadhichin Religious Awareness Academic INDA How can religion affect a whole community? Can we feel belonging to religion as well outside of temples, abbeys, churches or mosques? What trigger a sense of believing? Kadichin’s community is slowly losing identity through the contemporary times, this is due because of the new generation of people not giving enough attention to rituals and daily religious routines. For the people to say proudly that we are a community of three religious nd four believes’ they cannot simply rely on their history. The project is about making a place where become a gathering space, serve the mental shelter from their guilt and religious notion related. The idea that separate them from each other is irony enough to be the same idea that people in cimmunity share in common so-called ‘strongly believe nd strictly practical of daily religion rituals’. Two programs will be mentioned in this project, cooking and meditation. As a practical routine people trend to have a cooking in common. And the idea of meditation comes when the place is going to provide an atmosphere of peace. To make an awareness of their difference and unity for the whole community. Karl Marx once said religion is the sign of the oppressed creature. Heart of a heartless world and the soul of soulless conditions, it is the opium of the people. But to Marx I argue is it religion or love? - Karl Marx, 1879

How different cultures with different beliefs live together peacefully like they say ‘difference but not dissent’ this diversity of belief is not the problem, they are one, friend and family.

Each of these is one fragment of the whole map which also contains some clues along with some architectural aspects.

It started in the Ayutthaya era in 1350 when Ayutthaya was the capital city of Siam or Thailand. It was prosperous in terms of trading and exchange goods. This route of trading allows people from different sides of the world to come and stay together. Muslim and Chinese merchants were first present in history. Followed by Portuguese diplomat, that is when Christianity started first in Thailand in 1570.

This totem is another example of a literal translation of their quote of love in their community and being proud of which put an architectural element of ornamentation in combine together as ‘literal’ co-exist to just provoke an awareness of their own words not against themselves but to support of the other side of the world, an outside world out of this community that we heard we acknowledge your statement but then show us enlighten us of what this community capable of. As an idea of co-existing in believes for community and keep repeat themselves “We are the community of three religions and four believes.” and a lot of love in their community but yet nothing seems to reflect this idea among them. They have a lot of their own life individually but then the people can view the architecture as a literal translation of those quotes which is raise a question “Do they believe what they said or it is just some heritage idea that passes from generation to another which is damage over time due to the cause of ignorance?” Yet another experiment on this is to project footage of activity that have unique characteristic onto the totem which is represented as a canvas of the community, it has a form but empty inside wait to be fulfilled with some idea of proudness.

As a medium to connect between the project of design and religion, psychology was chosen in order to connect of ‘what to build?’, ‘what to represent?’ and most important ‘what do they really think?’. If this turns out to be some idea as my statement ‘ The whole love of community in co-exist idea is nothing but just a heritage which going to be gone before we realize the core of it.” In this statement, Freud makes it clear that most of the ideas are not come from an individual-self but as a collective which is also pass through time to the next set of collective so this movement cannot be forced. Prohibition of community is not written and stated but it just appears to be some sort of reminder and common knowledge for them that they connect just only surface. Religion can forge and shape people’s life-style than the so-called ‘co-exist community ‘ is not actually exist there is NO co-exist but becomes a new entity of their own just a new typology of this community, Kadichian becomes a new entity among a false belief.

As such limited space compared to the number of population, more than half of the space was spent for the center of each neighborhood which is a religion-related edifice. As for religion that shapes their living cooking is one of the strong aspects of the Thai community which come to the result of unique cuisine. The space target to make new management in the neighborhood and as a resolvent for the limited space comes the common space that held the activity that happens most inside. Decorated with the architectural element of religion that reminds the proudest quote of the neighborhood.

07 JW Lauching the new brand world Thailand Rebranding and installation Organization Tito Tito creative agency & consultancy

We’re curious and restless with an entrepreneurial spirit fueled from a fire in our belly that’s kept us moving for 200 years. Experimentation is in our blood and our thirst for life is unquenchable. We’re not aged for years and waiting patiently to be uncorked. But strong, pent-up and dying to get out of the cask. We don’t believe in the promise of tomorrow. That’s why we wring every last drop out of today like there may not be a tomorrow. Because we believe life is not meant to be sipped. It’s meant to be tasted, experienced, explored, lived. That’s why we have the best stories (some of which are probably best kept under our cap).

Due to radical shifts from wet to dry periods the building harvests water by funnelling it through its two central cores and into basins which are drained by two channels and into a 2000 litre filtration and dual storage tank system where it is reserved for later use. The unused and derelict exercise equipment on the school grounds are also gathered, refurbished, connected to the water tanks via pumps and hoses, and scattered around the garden area; linking the act of exercising to the watering of the garden in what is referred to here as ‘gardenasium’.

08 Pylonesque Uthai Thani, Thailand Canteen Academic, Practical INDA

Pylonesque combines climatic context and vernacular typologies into a semi-enclosed multi-purpose space for a primary and middle school in the Thai province of Uthai Thani; a region that experiences heavy rain seasons followed by extensive hot dry periods—where water holds cultural and practical significance as it is linked to agriculture, tradition, and festivities. The project responds architecturally and ecologically as a water harvesting system, which throughout its development it sought to address three primary criteria: (1) Construction techniques and industrial materials that are standard but executed in an artisanal manner, (2) Flexibility in the program to provide functionality, play, and aesthetics, (3) Climatic sensitivity to the annual monsoons and droughts.

Finally, intended as a new beacon on school grounds, the colours allow for the building to fit in while standing out, complementing the geometry, materials, artisanal applications, and performance that nod to their surroundings of vast and dense green scenery dotted with electrical pylons and water harvesting towers, creating a new kind of ‘industrial vernacular’.
